Our "favorite CCM albums of 1985-95" episode series launched with a bang last time as we discussed some of our "honorable mentions" -- albums that barely missed making it onto our main lists. Now it is time to dive into the albums that didmake our individual lists, beginning with numbers 100 through 91. We kept our lists super private and none of us had any idea what the others had listed prior to recording. Get ready for wacky fun and crazy hijinks.

Mon, 26 Apr 2021 - 55min - 33 - 100 Favorite CCM Albums of 1985-95: Honorable Mentions (Episode 32)
Just like everyone, the 3Ds are suckers for lists. So we got together and compiled our own personal lists of our favorite CCM albums from 1985-95. On this week's episode we list our "honorable mentions," the albums that just barely missed making it onto our lists. Interesting times ahead.

Amy Grant wasn't the only CCM artist to release a "female singer wearing a red dress on the album cover" album in 1991. Margaret Becker's Simple House was also released that year. This week, the 3D's look back at what they consider to be Maggie's finest moment. And bonus! This is the last episode of CCM in 3D to be recorded in a less-than-ideal acoustic environment. Better audio days are coming soon.

Mon, 05 Apr 2021 - 37min - 31 - Deep Dive: Charlie Peacock's *Love Life* (Episode 30)
This is an episode that the 3Ds have been anticipating for a long time. When Charlie Peacock's Love Life dropped, it made a deep and lasting impression on all three of us. It was an album with a lot on its mind and deep wisdom to impart. In addition, Love Life was a dizzying musical cornucopia of exceeding goodness.
We still adore every musical highlight and lyrical turn of phrase on this classic album. Hopefully that comes through in this episode. Grab a glass of your favorite beverage and find an easy chair as this is going to be a longand winding deep dive into one of the finest recordings in the CCM genre, circa 1985-95.

Mon, 22 Mar 2021 - 1h 03min - 30 - Three for the Show -- Allies, Geoff Moore, and Matthew Ward (Episode 29)
Believe it or not, the 3Ds don't all have the same musical tastes. There are many albums and artists that one of us loves that (for whatever reason) passed right by the other two. So we decided to record the first of what will surely be a recurring series where one D gives the others three songs from an album that we love that the other two don't know. The other two do the same for the rest of us. Then we get together and talk about what we heard. Confused? Don't be. It's a little things we like to call "Three for the Show."

The year 1991 was a great one for CCM, with many benchmark albums released that year. One of the finest was the debut album by Susan Ashton, entitled Wakened by the Wind. Aided by the songs and production talents of Wayne Kirkpatrick and a bevy of Nashville's finest session musicians, Wakened by the Windis one of the finest debut albums in CCM history and a signature statement by one of CCM's premiere vocalists. The 3Ds are giddy with excitement to deep dive into this bona fide CCM classic.

Mon, 25 Jan 2021 - 44min - 26 - CCM "greatest hits" albums (Episode 25)
In an age of digital streaming and drag-and drop, self-curated playlists, the idea of an artist releasing a "greatest hits" album seems rather quaint. But in the heyday of CCM, the greatest hits album was a bigdeal. Most artists only got one greatest hits collection, others had a couple, while a few bands had scads of them (White Heart and Petra, call your respective offices). On this, the 16th episode of CCM in 3D, the D's discuss their favorite greatest hits albums, ca. 1985-1995.

Mon, 11 Jan 2021 - 47min - 25 - Year in Review -- 1985 (Episode 24)
This week the 3D's take a look back and review the year 1985. What was going on in the world? What was hot on non-Christian radio. And, of interest to listeners of this podcast, what was happening in CCM that year?
The year 1985 was a year of transition. New albums from Amy Grant and Russ Taff broke ground sonically and in terms of dealing with tough topics. In addition, a brand new technology called the Compact Disc was beginning to assert itself in the marketplace.
Join the 3D's as they go back in time to the year 1985.

Mon, 04 Jan 2021 - 48min - 24 - Deep Dive: Steven Curtis Chapman's *More To This Life* (Episode 23)
This week's podcast is part of an entire month of "deep dives," a little something that we are calling "Deep Dive December with the 3D's."
These days, the name Steven Curtis Chapman is associated with multiple Grammy and Dove awards, huge concert tours, and even an autobiography. Ernie Johnson Jr., the studio host of Inside the NBA on TNT once called Steven Curtis Chapman the "Michael Jordan of Christian music."
But before all of the accolades and worldwide acclaim that launched him into a great adventure, Chapman was a simple singer/songwriter hailing from Paducah, Kentucky. After two moderately successful on the Sparrow label, Chapman released his third album, More To This Life, in 1989. The album would generate a great deal of radio airplay, produce one of the most iconic songs for Christian weddings, and pave the way for bigger things to come.
Join the 3D's as they deep dive into Steven Curtis Chapman's More To This Life.
Show note:Toward the end of this podcast, Dan mentions an official CCM in 3D playlist on Spotify. That playlist can be found here.

Mon, 28 Dec 2020 - 42min - 23 - Deep Dive: Phil Keaggy's *Find Me in These Fields* (Episode 22)
This week's podcast is part of an entire month of "deep dives," a little something that we are calling "Deep Dive December with the 3D's."
Phil Keaggy released his first CCM album (What a Day) in 1973, right at the beginning of the so-called "Jesus Music" movement. Keaggy continued to record consistently throughout the 1970s and 80s. In 1988, Keaggy recorded the finest Beatles album not recorded by the Fab Four--the critically acclaimed Phil Keaggy and Sunday's Child. Surely the pressure to follow up Sunday's Child with "Phil Sings the Beatles, part deux" was high. But Phil Keaggy has always zigged when others would zag. This week the 3D's consider Keaggy's follow up to Sunday's Child as they deep dive into the now 30-year-old classic, Find Me in These Fields.

Mon, 21 Dec 2020 - 45min - 22 - Deep Dive: Russ Taff's *Medals* (Episode 21)
This week's podcast is part of an entire month of "deep dives," a little something that we are calling "Deep Dive December with the 3D's."
Here is the recipe. Start off with a heaping helping of great songs written by Chris Eaton, Roby Duke, Chris Eaton, Crissie Grossman Puig, Pam Mark Hall, and Russ & Tori Taff. Season to taste with the finest L.A. session players of the 1980s: Paul Leim, Nathan East, Neil Stubenhaus, James Newton Howard, Robbie Buchanan, Larry Williams, Dann Huff, Michael Landau, Paul Jackson, Jr., Bill Champlin, Tamara Champlin, Tommy Funderburk, Tata Vega, and Lenny Castro. What do you get? You get the album Medals, arguably Russ Taff's finest moment as a solo artist.
Medals also found Taff reinventing himself for the record. As Lucas W. Hendrickson writes in the 2001 book CCM Presents: The 100 Greatest Albums in Christian Music, "Medals...falls squarely between the 'former lead singer of the Imperials' vide found on his solo debut Walls of Glass and the troubled, introspective nature of his 1987 self-titled project."
As far as the 3D's are concerned, no album better personifies 1980s L.A. smooth/West Coast AOR CCM quite like Medals.

Mon, 14 Dec 2020 - 55min - 21 - Deep Dive: The Imperials *...This Year's Model* (Episode 20)
This week's podcast kicks off an entire month of "deep dives," a little something that we are calling "Deep Dive December with the 3D's."
In 1985, The Imperials brought super-producer Brown Bannister into the fold to produce their album Let the Wind Blow. The high-tech (at the time) 8-bit graphics screamed "Cutting Edge™" but the resulting album was a relatively safe effort firmly ensconced in the prevailing smooth, West Coast AOR ethos of that time.
By the time 1987 rolled around, lead singer Paul Smith and long-time Imp Jim Murray were gone from the band and were replaced by Jimmie Lee Sloas and Ron Hemby. The two newcomers provided the band with an infusion of youthful energy and Bannister steered the band into uncharted waters as they released ...This Year's Model.
The 3D's had big, big fun revisiting this classic album (as you will hear).

Mon, 07 Dec 2020 - 43min - 20 - Mastedon...remastered! (Episode 19)
On this week's podcast, the 3D's look back at two of their favorite hard rock albums from the late 80s and early 90s--Mastedon's It's a Jungle Out There!and Lofcaudio. Recently the folks at Girder Music sent us their remasters of both of these classic albums. Since Derek already owned original copies of both recordings, it was interesting to compare the sound and packaging of the new releases verses their older counterparts.
What did we think? Listen to the podcast to find out.
Show notes:Once again, a big thank you Greg at Girder Music for hooking us up with the remasters of It's a Jungle Out There! and Lofcaudio. We received the discs as a kind gesture from Girder in exchange for an honest, unbiased review. Head on over to Girder's website on the day this episode drops (November 30, 2020) and take advantage of their "cyber Monday" sale.

We haven't even celebrated American thanksgiving week--let alone gotten through the season of Advent--but the 3D's have jumped the gun and started thinking about their favorite CCM Christmas albums released during the years 1985-95. On this episode, you'll hear about Dave's trip with some college buddies to a shopping mall (what are those?), a CCM Christmas album named after a secondary color, and which one of the 3D's really, really doesn't like the song "The Little Drummer Boy."

Mon, 23 Nov 2020 - 48min - 18 - Deep Dive: White Heart's *Freedom* (Episode 17)
On this week's podcast, the 3D's do their best to remain (somewhat) objective as they dive deep into an album that would make all three of their "desert island" discs list--the 1989 album Freedomby White Heart. Producer Brown Bannister wrote about this album, "If you haven't heard this record, you haven't heard White Heart. Of course I'm not discrediting any of their previous projects in the past, but I believe this album takes major leaps forward in tapping the true potential of this band. This is truly a 'collective' expression of six very talented guys." Yes and amen!

Christian metal was practically unknown until the arrival of Stryper on the scene in 1983. Soldiers Under Command was the band's first full-length studio album and it achieved gold status. The album established the band as a force in Christian music and opened doors for other Christians metal bands.
Buckle in as the 3D's (who may or may not have been wearing yellow and black at the time of recording) go track-by-track through this classic recording. Then stay tuned as Dave Wilson interviews Michael Sweet about Soldiersand what the band is up to these days.

There are "classic albums" and then there are "genre defining albums." Amy Grant's Lead Me On fits easily into the latter category. Although not a great performer on the radio in terms of hit singles, Lead Me On became a favorite with fans and critics alike, even becoming the top-ranked album in the 2001 book CCM Presents: The Top 100 Greatest Albums in Christian Music. It is an album that rewards repeated listens and holds up remarkably well some 32 years after its release.
Come along for the ride as the 3D's take a deep dive into one of the finest albums of the CCM genre.

Mon, 26 Oct 2020 - 57min - 14 - Deep Dive: DeGarmo and Key's *Streetlight* (Episode 13)
Childhood friends Eddie DeGarmo and Dana Key (they met in first grade) went on to become one of the best-known duos in contemporary Christian music. One of their albums (This Ain't Hollywood from 1980) was nominated for a Grammy and their video for the song ""Six, Six, Six" found its way into rotation at MTV.
In 1986, the duo released their seventh studio album entitled Streetlight. The album marked a move away from the synthesizers that had marked their previous 80s albums and back toward a more guitar-based, organic feel. Join the 3D's as they travel back to 1986 and do a deep dive into this CCM rock classic.

Mon, 19 Oct 2020 - 47min - 13 - CCM Out of Bounds, vol. 1 (Episode 12)
As a rule, the 3D's focus on the so-called "golden age" of Christian hit radio CCM: 1985-1995. However, our own private enjoyment of CCM regularly stretches beyond those years. This week we acknowledge those years outside of 1985-95 with a new series are calling "out of bounds." This recurring, occasional series will explore our favorite artists, albums, and songs that fall just outside of the 1985-95 time frame. If your favorite CCM came along prior to Amy's Unguarded or after DC Talk's Jesus Freak, then this new series is for you.

Mon, 12 Oct 2020 - 42min - 12 - CCM live albums (Episode 11)
As a genre, contemporary Christian music has never much focused on live albums. However, there have been a few notable live recordings along the way and the 3Ds are excited to explore them on this week's episode.

Mon, 05 Oct 2020 - 56min - 11 - Deep Dive: Russ Taff's self-titled album (Episode 10)
When an artist self-titles their debut album, the message is usually along the lines of, "Hello there. This is who we are. Nice to meet you." When an artist self-titles their third, fourth, fifth, or later album, the message is much different: "Hello again. This album will contain big changes from who we were previously." So it was in 1987 when CCM vocalist Russ Taff released his self-titled third solo album. Whereas the previous album (Medals, 1985) had been full of anthems about not bowing to idols and the artist being "rock solid," the viewpoint had shifted radically on the third album. Taff had clearly plummeted "down in the lowlands" and a "dark night of the soul" album was the result.
The 3D's were excited to revisit an album that meant so much to each of them back in 1987. Would the songs still hold up today? Would the message carry the same gravitasas before? Would the production undermine the seriousness of the lyrics? Push play and find out for yourself.

Mon, 28 Sep 2020 - 1h 03min - 10 - Deep Dive: Rich Mullins' self-titled album (Episode 9)
This past Saturday (September 19, 2020) marked the 23rd anniversary of the passing of singer/songwriter Rich Mullins. The release of this Rich Mullins themed episode on September 21, 2020 is purposely meant to coincide with and commemorate that sad anniversary. Rich, may you rest in peace and rise in glory.
And I heard a voice from heaven saying, “Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.” “Blessed indeed,” says the Spirit, “that they may rest from their labors, for their deeds follow them!” (Rev. 14:13)
---
Prior to 1986, Rich Mullins was known primarily as a songwriter who had penned songs covered by a handful of CCM artists, most notably two songs recorded by Amy Grant ("Sing Your Praise to the Lord" and "Doubly Good to You"). With the release of his self-titled 1986 album, Mullins became a recording artist in his own right.
Joining Dan and Derek on this deep dive episode into Mullins' first album is his long-time friend Kathy Sprinkle. Sprinkle shares her recollections of their Cincinnati Bible College days, Mullins being signed to Reunion Records, his friendship with Amy Grant, and thoughts on each of the debut album's ten tracks. Fans of Rich Mullins will find much to love in this episode.---
Kathy Sprinkle is a counselor at Charis Counseling and Training in Mason, Ohio. With this episode we begin a short, recurring series called "The Charlie Sound." Similar to a series we began earlier entitled "The Brown Sound," episodes of "The Charlie Sound" will focus on musician-turned-producer Charlie Peacock and the unique sonic perspective he brings to the producer's chair. On this first episode, the 3D's take a look back at 3 1/2 albums by Margaret Becker (Immigrant's Daughter, Simple House, Soul, and half of the album Grace).

Mon, 14 Sep 2020 - 54min - 8 - Deep Dive: AD's *Art of the State* (Episode 7)
The year 1985 was a watershed one for contemporary Christian music. Classic albums like Beat the System and Unguarded made huge marks on the CCM landscape. That year was also a banner year for lesser-known CCM gems. Among the finest "hidden gems" of 1985 was Art of the State by the band AD. AD was formed when former Kansas guitarist/keyboardist/songwriter Kerry Livgren surrounded himself with a stable band consisting of former Kansas bassist Dave Hope, drummer Dennis Holt, vocalist/keyboardist Michael Gleason, and Warren Ham on vocals and woodwinds. Art of the State was the second album under the AD name and it remains the band's finest hour in their brief career. Sit back and relax as the 3D's explore this unsung CCM album track-by-track.

Mon, 07 Sep 2020 - 39min - 7 - The Brown Sound: Brown Bannister and Kim Hill (Episode 6)
With this episode we introduce a recurring series called "The Brown Sound." These episodes will focus on super-producer Brown Bannister and how he manages to get the best of out the artists he produces and why so many CCM artists produce the finest albums of their careers with Brown at the helm. On this first episode, the 3D's take a look back at the first three albums by Kim Hill, all of which were produced by Brown Bannister.
Show notes: During the episode, Derek mentions a video where White Heart's Mark Gersmehl speaks about Brown. Apparently that video no longer exists on YouTube. Also, there is a bit of noise that creeps onto the end of this podcast, for which we apologize.
As mentioned on this episode, Pastor Derek has created a playlist on Spotify focusing on all of the session bass work done by Tommy Sims. You can access that playlist by clicking here: https://tinyurl.com/y4f2rh78

Michael W. Smith's first two albums--Project (1983) and Michael W. Smith 2 (1984), respectively--were fine works, if a bit tentative. With the release of his 1986 album The Big Picture, Smitty tore down the sonic walls and released an album aimed directly at young people and their concerns. Hop aboard the nostalgia train as the 3D's embark on a track-by-track excursion through a classic album that introduced a generation of youth group kids to Lamu, Rocketown, and a girl named Rebecca who was old enough to know.

Mon, 24 Aug 2020 - 55min - 5 - Deep Dive: Amy Grant's *Unguarded* (Episode 4)
The peak of Amy Grant's pop success came in 1991 with the release of her album Heart in Motion. Her initial moves toward that later pop success began in 1985 with the release of her album Unguarded (an album that is celebrating its 35 year anniversary this year). On this episode of CCM in 3D, the 3D's continue their "deep dive" series by going track-by-track into one of the definitive albums of early contemporary Christian music. An album that was left out of the 2001 book CCM Presents: The 100 Greatest Albums in Christian Music. In fact, Unguarded didn't even make any of the various "honorable mention" lists at the end of the book. Really, CCM Magazine?!? Y'all need to wise up.

Mon, 27 Jul 2020 - 28min - 1 - CCM in 3D - Teaser
Most genres of music do a fine job of celebrating and remembering their history. Sadly, contemporary Christian music does not. When “classic CCM” is remembered, it is with more than a little embarrassment--like looking at one’s high school yearbook photos (“Ewww, look my awful hair!”).
We are hoping to change that. Welcome to the "teaser" for our podcast: "CCM in 3D."
