Eating for menopause is exactly the same as eating for bodybuilding. (Say what?) One of the most common complaints I hear from women in menopause is that they didn’t change a thing, yet they suddenly started gaining fat at an uncontrollable pace! And that’s exactly the problem. What happens in our body on a cellular level once we move towards menopause and beyond is far different from what happens in our younger years. So what used to work to keep us relatively lean back then, will no longer work. (But don’t despair. The changes you need to make are not as drastic as you may think.) Bodybuilders are notorious for hacking their bodies to get to absurdly low levels of body fat. Although most menopausal women don’t care about getting quite that lean, the principles are actually the same! (And don’t worry, the answer is not a zero-carb diet.) Do you seek out discomfort? Or are you perfectly fine playing it safe and not taking risks or doing anything remotely uncomfortable? How you do one thing is how you do everything. Most people prefer to stay within their comfort zone because it’s familiar. This makes sense, right? Who the hell would purposely chase discomfort and unfamiliarity? Well, I’ll tell you who—successful people. People who are successful (or are on the path to success) have this in common. They aren’t afraid to take risks. They aren’t afraid to push themselves. They wake up earlier than everyone else. They show up, do the work, and don’t complain about it. They are this way in the gym. They are this way in their career or business life. And, if they were lucky enough in their childhood, this was taught to them by their parents so that it felt natural to them well into adulthood. The problem is, most people are not this way. And for most people, that’s okay! I’m not saying these are necessary qualities for every human to have. But if you desire something bigger, something better, something more meaningful in any area of your life, you need to learn the skill of chasing discomfort and pushing yourself outside your comfort zone consistently so that you can make it happen. Nobody is coming to save you. Build what you want yourself — whether that’s your body, business, family, or literally anything else. It never fails. With every new program launch, there is an aura of stress, worry, and fear amongst the participants. Of course, this is exacerbated if it’s attached to a competition with a huge cash prize, but it got me thinking about how common it is to stress over minutiae when something substantial is on the line (like, oh, I don't know, $20,000). The most epic shred I’ve ever created, Buns & Guns, has just launched, and the competition begins in a couple of days (May 24th, 2021). The cash prizes total $41, 500 which is the biggest cash fund I’ve ever offered. Naturally, this makes people lose their marbles. They all hyperfocus on manipulating as many external (and irrelevant) variables as possible so that their results are good enough to win: are we using UK or US cups? What exact time should I have my protein shake if I’m at work and can only take one break per shift? Can I use a different brand of protein powder? What if I can’t do deadlifts because of a back injury? Will my results suffer? How many ml in a US cup, and what if I can’t find US cups to measure with for this recipe?” etc... And let me be the first to say I get it. I truly do because I’m the same damn way. I love to control many aspects of my environment because I’m a control freak. But here’s a secret: it’s not at all realistic, and these little details don’t matter. The more we try to control these variables, the more stress we place on ourselves and the worse off we are. And another secret? The winners of my programs are the ones who DO NOT do this. In fact, they do the opposite of this. My whole life, I’ve always been fascinated by huge muscles. It’s also taken me YEARS of intense determination, drive, and ass-busting to get them. As a former skinny yoga teacher, I dreamed of the day I’d have a round, juicy butt and huge legs. But yoga was definitely not the way to do it. So when I decided to get my ass in the gym and start training with my first personal trainer, Curtis, I was on a mission to grow the biggest glutes and legs I could possibly grow. Except I was doing it ALL wrong. I would position myself under the free bar week after week, month after month, trying my hardest to increase the load and increase my size. But my back couldn’t handle it. It hurt like a b*tch to squat under that free bar! All my years of yoga left me with very weak glute muscles because the types of squats you do in yoga don’t require much glute activation. Because of this, my lower back would pick up the slack of what my glutes should have been doing when I would break parallel and go deep (though I didn’t realize this at the time). My efforts were not matching my results. I wasn’t getting bigger! Instead, I was just constantly in pain, and my weak glutes were making it impossible to increase my load in the gym. After loads of researching, I realized what was causing my back pain. I became obsessed with building my glutes so that I could alleviate the pain and push some heavier weight so I could grow. As you’ll hear in this week’s episode, a strange turn of events happened with my friend Emma that changed the course of my entire bodybuilding career. Most people just want to be right. If you’ve ever paid close attention to how people talk to each other, nobody is actually listening. It’s just a game of right vs. wrong where the “listener” is just waiting for the other person to stop talking so they can talk again. This is not listening. It’s not even effective communication. Listening and communication are skills that need to be developed—skills that many adults don’t ever end up mastering. This gets compounded when we become parents. If we haven’t learned how to effectively communicate by the time we have children, we then make it damn near impossible for our children to learn and master these skills. It becomes a vicious cycle that makes relationships exhausting and hard. You’ve heard me discuss how many of our issues actually stem from our childhood. This is no different. As a child, I grew up in a very authoritarian household. My parents were my parents, not my friends. We were spanked, shouted at, and punished — we even had a naughty step and went to a boarding school. I never felt understood or listened to. I spent much of my childhood rebelling and doing whatever I could to be the exact opposite of my parents (which is actually what most children do when their parents aren’t effective communicators). I craved acceptance and individuality but didn’t receive those things from my parents. But I vowed to be the total opposite of them and have spent my entire adult life seeking and learning how to do better, especially for my own kids. I have never punished my children. They’ve never been shamed, shouted at, talked down to, or suppressed. I ask them questions and nurture their individuality. I teach them how to seek answers for themselves. And most importantly? I accept them for who they are, and they know and feel that every single day. If every parent can learn these important skills, we will witness a massive transformation in future generations. In this podcast, I will teach you exactly how to listen so your kids will talk and talk so your kids will listen. And in turn, your kids will have the healthiest, most fulfilling relationships at every level. Listen closely as I share the following strategies (and examples) that you can implement immediately in all of your relationships.
