You and I are creatures of habit, good and bad. We don't always do things because they 'work', we do them because we did them Yesterday. Last week. Month. Year. We do them because, we're sleepwalking through (parts of our) life. We do them because they're familiar, not effective. Because our parents did them, so now we do. We do them because they are habits we unconsciously adopted, not actions we consciously chose. And then one day, we find ourselves trapped in a psychological, emotional and behavioural operating system that keeps us in holding pattern of... blah. Not optimising our time, talent, creativity, intellect or genetic potential. This is a chat about waking up.

So I just met Dr. Jeffrey Gross on the podcast and I loved him so much that I asked him to be a regular on the show and he said yes. Giddy-up. I love my job and the fact that I get to 'hang out' with people who, in any other situation, l'd never even meet, let-alone become friends with. So good. In broad terms, we chatted about the evolution, attitudes, cults, limitations, pros and cons relating to the world of allopathic (Western) medicine, alternative treatments, biohacking, regenerative medicine and lots more (as it stands in 2024). **About the Doc.. Dr. Jeffrey Gross graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a degree in biochemistry and molecular cell biology. He earned his Doctor of Medicine in 1992 from the George Washington University School of Medicine. He contributed to virology research during his studies. After graduating, he undertook a residency in neurological surgery at the University of California, Irvine Medical Centre until 1997. He then pursued a Fellowship and Chief Residency in Spinal Biomechanics at the University of New Mexico until 1999. Licensed in California and Nevada, Dr. Gross has SPINE practices in Orange County and Henderson, Nevada. A trained neurological surgeon, he specializes in athletic injuries and spine procedures, and offers longevity and biohacking consultations.

In this episode, Dr. Bill Sullivan (our favourite award-winning professor, author and science superstar from the Indiana University School of Medicine), tells us about being evolutionarily equipped for predators and dangers that no longer exist, and what impact that kind of hypervigilance can have on our mind, body, emotions and in general terms, our health. We also chat about status hierarchy (it's been around for millennia) and our need to feel superior, important and valued. We learn that stoics and philosophers were talking (and teaching) about the human condition thousands of years before psychology was a thing. We discuss the concept of wealth being about much more than money and the connect (or disconnect) between the states of our external (physical) and internal (non-physical) worlds. And in one of my proudest TYP achievements, after dropping the F bomb around the very moral and articulate Dr. Bill a thousand times over numerous episodes, today he walked through the swearing door for the first time. I should be ashamed. I'm not.

Interpersonal intelligence is the ability to understand, interact, and communicate effectively with others in a range of settings and situations. It's about being able to 'read the room'. Know what to say and not say. And how. And when. And how much. And to whom. It's about knowing what's 'being said' when nobody's talking. It's about understanding someone else's reality in the moment. That your intention is probably not their experience. That your 'funny' is their offensive. Your clear concept, their confusing idea. It involves recognising and interpreting other people's emotions, motivations, desires, and intentions, and responding in ways that foster connection, collaboration, and mutual understanding. I believe this kind of intelligence is an interpersonal superpower.

At 43, Nicole Liddell had never been to University, didn't know the difference between an undergraduate and post-graduate degree, was a single mum of three (still is), was living below the poverty line and struggling to feed her kids, was navigating numerous psychological, emotional and physiological issues, was a victim of domestic violence, had very little self-esteem, self-worth, self-belief or confidence, and to say that her future wasn't looking bright, would have been a massive understatement. Well, now she's completing her PhD in Psychology, she's not broke, she's lost 35kgs, life is very different, she's very different and this was a conversation that many of you will find encouraging and uplifting.

In case you don't know, Renae was one of the world's best netballers for more than a decade, having won international player of the year twice, world championships, Commonwealth Games gold, multiple premierships in the national league, way too many awards and she represented Australia 67 times. No, he was a highly-intelligent, deep-thinking pracademic who challenged convention (if he thought it was stupid or ineffective) and asked questions that some people didn’t want asked. Between 2001 and 2014 she made 59 senior appearances for Australia, was a member of the Australian teams that won the gold medals at the 2007 World Netball Championships and the 2014 Commonwealth Games. During a thirteen year playing career she also played in six premiership winning teams - four with the Melbourne Phoenix and two with the Melbourne Vixens. She captained the Vixens for eight seasons, including when they won the 2009 and 2014 ANZ Championships.

Just ask the marketing people and they'll tell you what sells. Quick fixes. Magic pills. All-things 'reward-without-work' and of course, the ever-popular 'hack'. But in our quest for painless success, who are we becoming? Is our obsession with the easy path making us more resilient or less? More capable under pressure or less? Stronger or weaker? Healthier or unhealthier? More productive or less? Happier or sadder? In simple terms, is our endeavour to avoid all-things hard, working or not? In many ways, our obsession with avoiding things that are physically, mentally and emotionally challenging is a self-created prison. A prison where we are becoming weaker, less resilient, more afraid, more anxious and less capable of dealing with the mess, mayhem and madness that life brings.

Sure they might live for eighty years (for example) but for some, the last twenty years (25% of their life) will be savaged by medical issues, pain, immobility, sarcopenia (muscle wasting), loss of strength, balance and coordination, cognitive decline and understandably, depression and anxiety. We now know that health span (the percentage of our life lived in a healthy state) is largely determined (70-80%) by our lifestyle, exercise, daily habits, diet and in general terms, our choices and behaviours. For the most part, failure is a subjective interpretation of an objective outcome. For example... you run 10km in fifty-two minutes and interpret it as a failure because your goal was to run sub fifty minutes and you didn't. Your story is "I failed" and accordingly you ‘feel' like a failure. Your feeling is real and as a result, your literal experience is disappointment, sadness, frustration and maybe even, anger. Conversely, I run the exact same time (52 minutes) and I feel like an absolute rockstar because it's my best ever time. And while I'm feeling great, you're feeling rubbish, despite our identical result. We each have different stories and subsequently, we each have a different emotional, psychological and experiential outcome. Me, positive. You, negative. Same time, different thinking. Same time, different story. Same time, different self-created experiences. Failure. Winner. When it gets super interesting is when I tell you about the girl who also ran fifty-two minutes while aiming for sub fifty, but didn't feel like a failure because she learned a lot through the experience, and subsequently saw the outcome as a valuable lesson, which would serve her well in future events.

The title of this episode is the name of Ben Shewry's new book. It doesn't really represent the chat but I just loved the title because, over the years I've masterfully (and clumsily) turned my obsession (human behaviour) into a job, a business, a PhD Project, multiple books, a podcast and conveniently, a way to pay a few bills. If you don't know who Ben is, he is one of the most respected Chefs in the world and owner of the internationally renowned restaurant, Attica (it's been in the "World's 50 Best Restaurants' list for over a decade). Ben was my surprise interview of the last six months. I'm not sure what I expected going in to our conversation but coming out the other side, he was (is) an inspiration and revelation; deep-thinking, fiercely intelligent, creative, kind and as the title suggests, just a little obsessed. Like it or not, want it or not, you've been programmed. By life. Family. Friends. School. Culture. Religion. Society. Media. Social media. Experiences. Interactions. Relationships. In many ways, you weren't taught how to think but rather, told what to think. If you're like most, then many of your beliefs were not consciously chosen (by you) but rather, unconsciously adopted. In other words, their beliefs became your beliefs and you had very little say or awareness in it, or of it. Without knowing or choosing, you became a version of them. And when you pushed back against the group think, you were quickly corrected, chastised and coerced back into conformity and compliance, because that was the price of 'membership'. And no, not all programming and conditioning is bad (of course) but now that we're grown-ups, the challenge for us is to find the place where our programming finishes, and we start. Unconscious. Conscious.

And while I've had thousands of Sundays, I've never had this one. This one is unique because, in the history of humanity, there will only ever be one August 25, 2024. And this is the one. This is my one. We commonly say that every day is a gift (and it is) but in the proximity and familiarity of so many days, gratitude (for a single day) and awareness (that every day is precious) are typically absent. If you could magically have a billion dollars right now but only 365 more 'todays'.. or you could live into old age with your potential and possibilities intact (but no additional money), l'm pretty sure what you'd choose.

He writes a great blog called Experimental History, is a stand-up comic, a Harvard Graduate and I think even he'd admit that he's kind of a quirky academic-comedian-philosopher hybrid. Okay, so I might have been somewhat lazy and negligent when it comes to looking after my skin and having regular checks. I may have also just got off the phone with the Skin Doc who told me that I'm an idiot for waiting, avoiding and being irresponsible. The pathology just came back from two biopsies (forehead, elbow) and one surgery (chin) and let's just say none of it was great news (basal cell carcinomas) but it could have been worse. I'll be fine but it was heading towards… not fine. Two more surgeries next week and five more biopsies on remaining 'concerns' So, what's my long-winded point? Well, this episode revolves around the idea of paying attention to the ever-present signs, symptoms and messages (in all areas of our lives) and not waiting for sh*t to break.
