Last night, I went to see Sepultura. The first openers were all bands I knew and somewhat liked. Most of them played tight, well-rehearsed, energetic and interesting sets. But when Sepultura came on, it took about a minute to realize that they were working on a completely different level than the openers. They were tight, well-rehearsed, energetic and interesting but they had something else that I can't describe. It was just electric. I'd chalk it up to liking the band and knowing their material - and I sure there's some of that - but I'm really not THAT big of a Sepultura fan.”Random Musical Thought: from Psalm 33:3, “Play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts.”Rachel Barton Pine’s appearance on the national radio show St. Paul Sunday, recorded on October 19, 2004. It made me think that perhaps there’s your demographic for a concert of works by Webern and Berg and Stockhausen: dudes who dress in black, listen to Metallica, and rent the Saw series. Worth a shot…”

I have lived a lot of places like Chicago, Milwaukee, Boston, Houston, L.A. and Philly. Do you have a favorite other than Chicago?” Random Musical Thoughts: "I would vote for Bach, all of Bach, streamed out into space, over and over again. We would be bragging, of course, but it is surely excusable to put the best possible face on at the beginning of such an acquaintance." (Lewis Thomas) "Mozart tells us what it's like to be human, Beethoven tells us what it's like to be Beethoven, and Bach tells us what it's like to be the universe." (Douglas Adams)A conversation with multi-instrumentalist and early music specialist David Douglass about his groundbreaking research and performances on the early arm-held violin. I have looked and looked, but I have not been able to locate the violin sheet music. Inquiries from my Inbox: Christopher asks, “My school is holding auditions for its annual Bach festival, and the conductor gave us the entire B Minor Mass to practice. However, practicing the entire thing front to back is incredibly time consuming, and I'm hoping there's a better, more efficient way to get this done.” Heather writes, “I am having my solo debut with orchestra coming up in March and am playing the Mendelssohn. I am a professional player, though not a soloist. How do you handle the endurance that it takes to get through a piece like this? I am exhausted for sure after playing a symphony concert, but playing solo is a whole different thing, which obviously you are well aware. I have been playing it for people to have the experience of playing it as much as possible though I don't have it memorized yet. My left hand gets so tense and tired and this only occurs when I am playing solo! I am hoping you have some helpful hints or insights. Also, on a fun note, where do you purchase your awesome gowns?”

Jesus Florido, Asturias by Albeniz arr. Rachel Barton Pine
Inquiries from my Inbox: Penelope asks, "How many concerts a year do you play? Just wondering..."
Random Musical Thought: Teaching artist Eric Booth writes: "Entertainment happens within what you already know. Underneath its many features that inspire, delight, frighten, sadden us, it confirms our sense of the way the world is. That's the whole point of entertainment- to stimulate and affirm- and it's often done brilliantly. The artistic experience had better not be opposed to this, or we are in big trouble. Art also stimulates and affirms, but it happens outside of what we already know; art enlarges our sense of the works- it expands our sense of the possible."

However, I cannot find any information about the piece itself, only a biography of Saint-Saens. Could you please direct me to a source?" Random Musical Thought: Composer Ned Rorem says, "Arguably, no artist grows up: If he sheds the perceptions of childhood, he ceases being an artist." A conversation about Franz Clement and the classical period with British musicologist Clive Brown, editor of the modern performing edition of the Clement's Violin Concerto in D Major. For a searchable database of summer music programs, visit www.allthingsstrings.com/search/ssg/advancedsearch.aspx. Random Musical Thought: What if violin students brought bows with them to concerts like kids bring baseball gloves to baseball games? Writing your own cadenzas: list musical material from all of the parts of the orchestral score and number each excerpt; study others' cadenzas: count how many measures long they are to find a typical range, write out each cadenza's harmonic scheme to note progressions and how many keys are used, mark which excerpts are used in others' cadenzas and observe how they are altered, note how many bits of musical material are used in each cadenza; brainstorm in your head and improvise on your instrument rather than trying to write the cadenza starting at the beginning, jot down any good ideas you come up with and when you have enough possibilities you can try to put them all together; think about whether the style of your cadenza matches the style of the concerto.

- Inquiries from my Inbox: Bill asks, “Why did you choose to change the tempo between the AC/DC and your own pieces??
- Random Musical Thought: Why weren’t any classical musicians included in the recent internet gossip story about musicians caught picking their noses?
- Tips for the day of a competition or an audition: concentrate on playing your best rather than worrying about what the judges will think, don’t worry about hearing a competitor who sounds amazing in the warm-up room, be sure to arrive early, bring plenty of healthy snacks, don’t ever leave the building, don’t ever leave any of your stuff unguarded especially your instrument or sheet music, bring a portable listening device and some good books or magazines, don’t feel obligated to chat with others if you’re not feeling sociable, bring along a designated buddy to keep you company, don’t wear yourself out in the warm-up room, play an old favorite piece or listen to loud music on your I-Pod to get in a performing mood, if you’re allowed to find your own warm-up spot a bathroom might be a good option, take time to center yourself rather than rushing to start playing after the judges tell you which piece to play, make sure your piano accompanist is ready to play before you give the cue, don’t be fazed if the judges are writing a lot of comments (they might be writing compliments!), don’t draw any conclusions from the judges’ tone of voice, don’t take it as a bad sign if the judges stop you more quickly than you expect, don’t peek at the judges while you’re playing, thank the judges after you finish if that would be appropriate, ask for feedback if you get a chance, be sure to show your comment sheets to your teacher, don’t compare judges’ numerical scores to each other.

Furthermore, they do not have access to instrument repair shops, resulting in their instruments becoming unplayable due to lack of basic maintenance. Global HeartStrings is dedicated to supporting these aspiring classical musicians. Rachel's youngest sister, 20-year-old violinist Hannah Barton, is helping organize supply-gathering drives for Global HeartStrings. For more information, please visit www.rebf.org. Be sure to also join the Global HeartStrings groups on Facebook and MySpace.
