It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! Emma speaks with Mike Prysner of the Empire Files to discuss Tulsi Gabbard's nomination to be U.S. Director of National Intelligence. Then, she speaks with journalist Erin Reed, author of the Erin In The Morning newsletter on SubStack, to discuss Rep. Nancy Mace's recent decision to introduce legislation to bar Rep. Sarah McBride, the only trans legislator in the upcoming Congress, from using the Capitol Hill bathrooms. First, Emma runs through updates on the ICC’s issuing of arrest warrants for the leaders behind Israel’s genocide of Palestinians, Israel’s new one-sided ceasefire pitch for Lebanon, the failure of Bernie’s Israel resolution in the Senate, the passage of the anti-non-profit bill in the House, US military aid to Ukraine, the Gaetz ethics report, Pete Hegseth’s history of sexual assault allegations, and Linda McMahon’s history of hiring people with sexual assault allegations, before watching a little more from the UN as they finally begin to hold Israel to account for their ethnic cleansing of Gaza. Mike Prysner then joins, diving right into Trump’s pick of one Tulsi Gabbard for his Director of National Intelligence, and the oddly underwhelming critique of her in the face of myriad problematic potential appointments, tackling how most of the mainstream criticisms of her focus on her odd foreign policy beliefs (support for dictators, Edward Snowden), leaving her deep ties to a deeply ideological religious organization untouched. Expanding on this latter element, Prysner parses through the history and evolution of the Science of Identity Foundation, a religious organization (or ‘cult’ to some ex-members) founded by former Hare Krishna member Chris Butler, who – claiming to be THE messenger from God – established and grew this community around himself, with explicit, long-term plans to establish and grow their role in American politics, first taking root in Hawaii with the rise of Gabbard’s parents, before she, having been groomed for the role from a young age, became the first elected to Congress. Going even deeper, Mike walks Emma through the central ideological beliefs of the organization, and how they fundamentally shape their education around islamophobia and homophobia, with a near-constant exposure to rampantly and explicitly anti-muslim and anti-LGBTQ sermons from Butler himself, ingraining these beliefs in children, before they step back to examine the community’s history of intimidation and harassment of ex-members and critics. Wrapping up, Prysner unpacks Tulsi’s role as a political chameleon, from her odd foreign policy takes to her Bernie-to-leaving-the-left pipeline, as a reflection of the organization's deep desire to climb the rungs of power – something expressed during her time in the military as well – and paints a picture of the role the Gabbard family play within the Science of Identity Foundation as a whole.

And in the Fun Half, Emma, Matt Binder, Brandon Sutton, and the MR Crew react to the breaking news that former Rep. Matt Gaetz withdrew his nomination to be Trump's incoming Attorney General, and how some new exclusive CNN reporting on his conduct may have contributed to his withdrawal. The crew also strolls down memory lane to remember when Gaetz defended his relationship with his (completely real) adopted son, Nestor. They then look into the grisly allegations outlined in a 2017 police report regarding sexual assault investigation into Trump's Defense Secretary pick, Pete Hegseth. After, they check in on Emma's spicy appearance on "Piers Morgan Uncensored", where Emma made Piers visibly uncomfortable because a woman wouldn't listen to him telling her to be quiet. Sam and Emma speak with Tyler Vasseur, shop steward with the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Branch 9, to discuss the tentative agreement being negotiated between the NALC and the United States Postal Service (USPS). First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Ukraine’s use of US-made missiles in Russia, the Gaetz report, Trump’s cabinet of predators, the DNC, House and Senate politics, US arms to Israel, genocide in Gaza, Musk/Bezos v. NLRB, and the Stop Terror Financing Bill, before watching Senator George Helmy’s emotional plea to the UN. Tyler Vasseur then joins, first outlining the breadth of the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) representation, before walking through the evolution of their ongoing fight for a fair contract, beginning with the expiration of their previous contract on May 20th, 2023 – touching on the major shortcomings of this contract’s Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA), particularly in the wake of the COVID pandemic and rampant inflation – and through over five hundred days of closed-door negotiations with Union Leadership, only for said leadership to announcement a new contract with a wage increase of a meager 1.3%. After diving deeper into the numbers behind this raise, Vasseur parses through the reaction of NALC members to this supposed “victory,” particularly as an anti-union Trump presidency threatens future victories, and how the rank-and-file is organizing to keep the fight for a fair contract going. After touching on the major financial impact the voucher program has had on public education, with a negative impact on its return end, Cowen wraps up by looking to the future of government-run-and-funded education under a Trump presidency, including the likelihood that he will actually dismantle the Department of Education, and why, despite the GOP’s electoral success, the voucher agenda has seen overwhelming backlash from voters. Sam speaks with Astead Herndon, national politics reporter at the New York Times and host of "The Run-Up" podcast, to break down a crazy first week post-election.  First, Sam runs through updates on the developing picture of Trump’s cabinet, the Stop Terror Financing Act, and CFPB and NLRB action, also touching on establishment responses to RFK’s nomination as HHS secretary and his dangerous take on vaccines. Astead Herndon then joins, diving right into the prevalent narrative of two deeply unpopular nominees that dominated the 2024 US presidential election, and why, in refusing to acknowledge their sides’ unpopularity (specifically when it came to the Biden Administration), Democrats and Harris completely failed to address the question of change in the eyes of the voters. Expanding on this, Herndon walks through the evolution of this overwhelming backlash to the Biden Administration, in particular, with his shocking decision to run for reelection in the wake of the 2022 midterms, committing the party to a vision of status-quo that voters had (visibly) been growing less and less content with, and gutting any opportunity – via primary or otherwise – to present or shape a new vision for what Democrats, and the Democratic nominee, were fighting for. After diving a little deeper into his research on the undecided, swing state voters that decided this election and making clear the obvious paths Democrats had to win them over, Astead and Sam explore another level of failed messaging on the part of the Democratic party, with rhetoric seeking to separate Trump from his GOP colleagues alongside ceding ground on the issues of crime and immigration allowed Trump to untether himself from the critiques of the former while claiming victory over the latter. Wrapping up, they tackle the particular arrogance that pushed the Democratic Party to ignore the myriad, obvious signs that a Biden-associated candidacy would be a non-starter for voters, and why they need to go back to the table and work on actually addressing voters’ concerns.

Molly Redden and Andy Kroll then join, diving right into who Russell Vought is in the context of Trump’s first administration (Director of the Office of Management and Budget), current campaign (policy director of the RNC platform committee), and the SUPPOSEDLY unrelated Project 2025 (co-author), before touching on the role he played in the evolution of the Trump team’s knowledge of the administrative state, and – more importantly – how to dismantle it. Craig Gent then joins, diving right into the mass proliferation of AI and algorithmic practices, not as a replacement for physical or technical labor, but as a replacement for management, exploring how the traditional role of human managers of overseeing a workplace has been replaced with automated systems that employ everything from gamification to surveillance and punishment to keep production in line with neoliberal aims of endless growth. Expanding on this, Gent walks through how these systems serve to further atomize and isolate an already alienated workforce, creating a supposedly infallible system that dictates their every move and completely obfuscates the power dynamics at play, resulting in a working environment with little to no space for agency, dignity, or solidarity, before briefly touching on how workers are desperately seeking for any way to leverage agency in these workspaces. Craig also highlights the pressing need for unions to open up their awareness to the threat of this technology, not as a tool that COULD be used to exploit them, but as ones that were explicitly created TO exploit them, working to suppress and pull back the exploitative nature of these systems rather than attempting to “share” in the benefit of this exploitation. Emma also tackles Bill Ackman’s defense of Trump’s appreciation of Adolf Hitler. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they watch Tucker Carlson bring fascism to the TP gooning party, unpack Harris’ unchanging stance on Israel, and talk with Daniel from LA about LA’s city council race between Jurado and De Leon. Happy Monday! Sam speaks with Grace Blakeley, English economics & politics commentator, staff writer at Tribune, to discuss her recent book Vulture Capitalism: Corporate Crimes, Backdoor Bailouts, and the Death of Freedom.

First, Sam runs through updates on the final 14 days before the US presidential election, Israel’s ongoing assault on Palestine and potential pivot to Iran, environmental disaster in Cuba, Elon Musk’s failures and fraud in his work alongside the Trump campaign, National Association of Letter Carriers’ labor news, Tesla’s regulatory problems, and the US economy, before diving a little deeper into the insanity of Elon Musk launching contrasting ad campaigns in Michigan attempting to stoke anti-Semitic and Islamophobic fears in Muslim and Jewish communities. Grace Blakeley then joins, first working to unpack the commonly accepted dichotomy between capitalism and a centrally-planned (socialist) economy, with the dystopia of socialism juxtaposed by liberalism’s vision of free-market democracy, before wading into the problems and inaccuracies of this binary, namely the fact that liberalism’s defining qualities (free-markets and democracy) don’t apply to the existing capitalist societies of today (particularly the largest imperial powers like the US and UK), where wealth and political power are becoming increasingly concentrated in the hands of fewer and fewer elites, translating into what is essentially centrally-planned oligarchy. Blakeley steps back to walk through the evolution of capitalism to this point, tackling neoliberals’ work to publically redefine a libertarian “free market” as a return to natural systems, while elites privately saw it as an explicit vision to protect corporate power amid rising social movements, establishing clear economic norms against anything that could threaten privatization, the free movement of capital, and low tax rates, while creating international institutions (backed by the West) to dole out punishment for any revolutionary states that sought to challenge them abroad, before touching on the contrasting work of a Keynesian vision – backed by the working class – that pushed the idea of a protective state and well-regulated markets, and exploring the major success this ideology had in bolstering the US labor movement of the mid-20th Century. Next, Grace walks Sam through the eventual success of neoliberal theory with the regimes of Pinochet, Thatcher, and Reagan in the late 1970s and early ’80s, and their overwhelming work to crush and fragment the working class and social power that had bolstered the social and economic progress of the century to that point, setting the stage for the solidification of the oligarchies we see today. After briefly touching on the value of a return to a more Keynesian vision for economies, and the central importance of revitalizing working-class power, Berkeley wraps up the interview by exploring a few other visions for strong, democratic, and worker-led economies. And in the Fun Half: Sam unpacks Trump’s most recent insult to workers (and whether that will even translate past the absurdity of it), and Elon Musk’s ongoing fraudulent and stochastic canvassing work for the Trump campaign. Obama walks through Trump’s extensive effort to undermine the US’ capacity to respond to pandemics, and Jim Breuer does… something… but it’s definitely racist. The MR Team also talks with John from TBurg about Ohio’s Issue 1, Matt from Tennessee about the moral monstrosity that is Richie Torres, and Noah from Nashville on Harris and the Left, plus, your calls and IMs!
