On the show this time, it’s the joy and heartbreak R&B of Shannon & the Clams.

Shannon & The Clams formed when bassist Shannon Shaw met guitarist Cody Blanchard at the California College of the Arts. The band is rounded out by Nate Mahan on drums and Will Sprott on Keys, and for this performance Victor Franco on percussion. They play unapologetically weird pop - a sometimes surfy blend of psych-rock, doo wop, and  R&B.  They released their 7th album in 2024, a vivid, intense tribute-to, and celebration-of Joe Haener, Shannon’s fiance, who died in a tragic car accident in 2022. The record is called The Moon is in the Wrong Place and is available on Easy Eye Sound.

Drummer and composer Yussef Dayes makes music that embraces tradition, but then puts on a brand new shirt and walks out into the city, ready for anything.  He’s a band leader - having put together a group of monster players to bring this music into existence. The Lewisham native has been in the midst of the current London community ever since he and his brothers were in a band together.  “United Vibrations” was jamming at the house on weekends, busking in the streets, and later putting on shows - including the infamous nights called “12 Tone.”  His debut solo album “Black Classical Music” is available through Brownswood Recordings and Nonesuch Records.

Drummer and composer Yussef Dayes makes music that embraces tradition, but then puts on a brand new shirt and walks out into the city, ready for anything.  He’s a band leader - having put together a group of monster players to bring this music into existence. The Lewisham native has been in the midst of the current London community ever since he and his brothers were in a band together.  “United Vibrations” was jamming at the house on weekends, busking in the streets, and later putting on shows - including the infamous nights called “12 Tone.”  His debut solo album “Black Classical Music” is available through Brownswood Recordings and Nonesuch Records.

They say the “elephant” refers to their emphasized agile bass guitar, and the “gym” refers to the physical and mental workout that is Math-Rock. Their music is a delicate balance of jazz, funk, and classical elements, unafraid to venture into catchy pop, or the shreddingest of shredding math-rock riffs. Sometimes the members of the band are counting in different time signatures. Simultaneously… YES. It’s surprisingly accessible given its complexity, due to an openness to the arrangements and their gorgeous tonal palette. Their latest albums are 'Dreams' and 'World,' both available through Topshelf Records.

He fell in love with hip-hop, and began to make it however he could. He didn’t know any MCs - so he gravitated to the musical side - sampling and scratching. He released his debut 'Endtroducing' in 1996 and has been changing the game one cool sound at a time ever since. His latest is called 'Action Adventure' and is available through Mass Appeal.

Punk from Suzi Quattro, The Suicide Machines, The Romantics, and the MC5. Pop and R&B and Hip Hop from Was Not Was, J Dilla, and Anita Baker. Sufjan Stevens, Bob Seger, or Eminem. And - from the quiet streets of Woodbridge came the psych-rocking songwriter Sixto Rodriguez. He released 2 studio albums with little success in the US, but he did well in Australia and New Zealand, and South Africa. In fact, he was a huge hit in South Africa. He didn’t know it at the time. He lived a simple life, working hard for very little money. It wasn’t until his daughter discovered a website about him in the late 90s that he realized how many fans he had in other parts of the world. His records were re-issued by Light in the Attic in 2009 and he toured - including to Seattle. He played many packed concerts to adoring fans - finally getting a taste of the success he deserved. He died in 2023 at the age of 81.

She loved his guitar playing and insisted that they be in a band together. That didn’t happen right away, but they kept in touch, and began writing together, and sharing 4 track demos of stuff, from when they were apart. Once her band broke up, Alison moved to London, and the band that would become The Kills formed in 2001, recording as VV and Hotel until they picked the band name. They play hard hitting heavy music, with one foot in bluesy garage rock, the other in epic cinematic noir-pop. It’s glitzy and dirty and always so dang cool. Their latest album is 'God Games' and it is available on Domino.

El Khat is the musical brainchild of Eyal el Wahab, a Yemeni man who grew up in Tel Aviv. He makes his own instruments in the tradition of impoverished people all over the world. The band is named after the drug – Khat – a stimulant chewed like tobacco across the Middle East and in Africa, and you’d better check where you are before partaking. Its legality varies by location, as does the punishment for possession! El Khat’s music is based in the traditional sounds of Yemen, but it is not frozen in amber, this is not anthropology.  This is living modern music for you to listen to now. Their latest is called Albat Alawi Op. 99 and it is available on Glitterbeat.

As she puts it, she “de-exotified” the Sitar. Flamenco, hip hop, jazz, and cinematic scores are all fair game. Her latest record, the first of a trilogy is called 'Chapter 1: FOREVER, FOR NOW.' Featuring production and collaboration from Arooj Aftab and Nils Frahm. It is available through Leiter, and on streaming services.

What started as a one-man-band - Dylan Sizemore on guitar, vocals, and stomping away on a kick drum - has evolved and adapted into a 6-piece prog/post-punk juggernaut - now featuring Nikki “Pickle” Smith from Death Valley Girls and Nick Aguilar, previous touring drummer for Mike Watt of the legendary Minutemen. The new album is called 'Data Doom' and is available on Greenway Records.

The Mountain Goats are a definitive independent band. John Darnielle has been releasing music under that name since 1991. He started out taping straight onto cassette, with a boombox, and over the years has returned to that medium - lo-fi for sure, but oddly high in emotional fidelity. He’s also worked with engineers - in particular with Tiny Telephone’s John Vanderslice, and is now equally comfortable with full-studio productions. The band has changed over the years too, but at the moment is a wonderfully cohesive group - Peter Hughes on bass, Matt Douglas on sax/keys and 2nd guitar, and rockin’ Jon Wurster on drums. His latest is “Jenny From Thebes” - his 22nd full length album, and it’s available on Merge Records.

The Budos Band is now on their 9th release - 6 albums and 3 EP’s - and they are also now on their own label - Diamond West. They were already recording on their own, in their own studio, and they were living a bi-coastal existence with some members in California. So, it really is an organic move, amicably splitting from their origin story label Daptone Records to do their own thing. Continuing their run of epic-sounding cinematic instrumental dramas, their first release on this imprint is the EP 'Frontier’s Edge.'
