- 365 - Episode 274: Helen and Philip Share Their Miscarriage Story & How to Support Loved Ones
Earlier this year, Helen went through a miscarriage, and since then she’s been navigating this devastating loss alongside her husband Philip. From doctor visits to sharing the news, every step along the way has been a difficult one. It’s unfortunate to learn that about 25% of pregnancies end in miscarriage, and expectant parents often have to go through their grief in silence, and alone. For this reason, Helen and Philip want to share their personal story to bring more visibility to the experience of miscarriage and reduce the stigma around talking about it. They also offer some tips for how we as a community can support loved ones going through similar experiences. To anyone who has experienced such loss, we see you, and our hearts go out to you. *Content Warning: This episode deals with the difficult topics of grief and loss, along with some graphic details surrounding the miscarriage experience. __________________________________________ Host: Helen Wu Guest: Philip Wang Editor: Michelle Hsieh __________________________________________ P A R T N E R S • OneSkin: Get started with 15% off your order using code “ABG” at OneSkin.co • McDonald’s: Try the new Grandma McFlurry at a McDonald’s near you, and send your grandma a message at sweetconnections.ai • Pampers: Check out the new Pampers Free and Gentle wipes today! • BetterHelp: Get 10% off your first month with code “ABG” at betterhelp.com/ABG __________________________________________ C O N N E C T W I T H U S • Subscribe and Follow us @asianbossgirl on Apple Podcasts/Spotify/Amazon Music/YouTube/Instagram/Twitter/Facebook • Join our Discord channel: https://discord.com/invite/4HxZgwFbhg • Listener Survey: Let us know your thoughts on the podcast here • Email: hello@asianbossgirl.com __________________________________________ S U P P O R T U S • Merch: asianbossgirl.myshopify.com • Donate: anchor.fm/asianbossgirl/support • More about us at asianbossgirl.com Learn more about your ad choices. Fri, 31 May 2024 - 364 - Spill the Baby Tea with Helen: Living with Grief - Coping and Healing after Miscarriage
Whether you’re a parent or someone who has faced the heavy weight of grief, this episode is dedicated to you. From the initial shock and denial to the eventual steps towards acceptance and hope, I share my journey with grief after my miscarriage, delving into what it means to grieve, how to navigate through grief, and the importance of community and support. I also share what I’ve learned about the seven stages of grief after loss. Writing these words have been both a cathartic and challenging process for me. I recount the moments of despair and the gradual rediscovery of hope, the days when it felt impossible to move forward, and the small victories that reminded me of my inner strength. By sharing my story, I hope to create a space where we can openly discuss our grief, honor our losses, and find comfort in knowing that we are not alone. This journey has taught me that while grief may be a solitary experience, healing is often found in the shared connections we make with others. Thank you for allowing me to share this part of my life with you. Wed, 29 May 2024 - 363 - Episode 273: How to Spot & Help the Narcissists in Your Life - ft. Alyssa “Lia” Mancao
Have you ever wondered if someone you know is a Narcissist? Maybe they have very high self-esteem, but when does self-confidence cross the line into an unhealthy level of self-importance? To help shed some light on this topic, we’re so excited to have Alyssa “Lia” Mancao back on the podcast! Last time, we spoke with Lia about the Importance of Chemistry vs. Compatibility in Relationships, but one of her particular specialties is helping people recover from narcissistic abuse. She walks us through the differences between adaptive and maladaptive narcissism, and why narcissists often employ manipulative techniques like negging and love bombing. We also talk about how mental health symptoms manifest in AANHPI communities and tips for how to bring a parent or family member to therapy. Lia is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and owner of Alyssa Marie Wellness, a group practice that employs a team of licensed psychotherapists. If you have any questions to ask her next time we have her on the show, leave them in the comments below! __________________________________________ Hosts: Janet Wang and Helen Wu Guest: Alyssa “Lia” Mancao Contributing Editor: Haemee Kang __________________________________________ P A R T N E R S • Skims: Find your next go-to t-shirt at Skims.com/abg and let them know ABG sent you! • Clarins: Receive 10% off Multi-Active Day & Night Cream + a free welcome gift + free shipping on your first order using code “ABG” at Clarins.com/ABG • Pampers: Check out the new Pampers Free and Gentle wipes today! • BetterHelp: Get 10% off your first month with code “ABG” at betterhelp.com/ABG __________________________________________ C O N N E C T W I T H U S • Subscribe and Follow us @asianbossgirl on Apple Podcasts/Spotify/Amazon Music/YouTube/Instagram/Twitter/Facebook • Join our Discord channel: https://discord.com/invite/4HxZgwFbhg • Email: hello@asianbossgirl.com __________________________________________ S U P P O R T U S • Merch: asianbossgirl.myshopify.com • Donate: anchor.fm/asianbossgirl/support • More about us at asianbossgirl.com Learn more about your ad choices. Fri, 24 May 2024 - 362 - Living Well with Janet: Food Therapy and Nutrition with Chinese Medicine Food Therapist, Zoey Gong RD
I am a big believer that food is medicine. Growing up in a Chinese household, my mother often told me (and still tells me) to eat certain foods based on Eastern philosophies of health. Once I went to college, I was more exposed to Western ways of thinking about healthy eating, which sometimes conflicted with what I was taught growing up. Through the years, I’ve experimented with vegetarian and vegan diets and now practice a pescetarian/Mediterranean way of eating - which I have found is the most accommodating for Western ideals of health while still being able to share meals with my Chinese family. In this episode, I chat with Zoey, a NY and Shanghai-based registered dietician, nutrition consultant, chef, and Chinese Medicine food therapist, who shares her own experience with American versus Chinese ways of eating and how she's seen it impact her physical and mental health. If you want to learn how to improve your nutrition for healthier living and crave a perspective that incorporates both Eastern and Western ways of thinking, listen in as we chat about fad diets, good food habits, and what she's learned from the older women in her life about maintaining good health and longevity. YouTube launched in 2005, and today’s guest was there right near the start. Weylie Hoang started her channel in 2007, with a video she filmed to teach a friend how to use a tampon. Over the years, we’ve watched her content evolve from beauty and fashion to camping, car maintenance, and traveling. We’re so excited to hear her perspective on how she’s maintained longevity as a content creator without burning out, why she lets the right audience find her rather than trying to tailor her content for specific trends, and what personal happiness really means to her. __________________________________________ Hosts: Melody Cheng and Helen Wu Guest: Weylie Hoang Editor: Michelle Hsieh Contributing Editor: Haemee Kang __________________________________________ P A R T N E R S • OUAI: Receive 15% off any product using code “ABG” at TheOUAI.com • Shopify: Sign up for a $1 per month trial period at shopify.com/abg • ZocDoc: Download the ZocDoc app for FREE at ZocDoc.com/ABG • Pampers: Check out the new Pampers Free and Gentle wipes today! Mel’s settling into New York now, but before that, she sat down with Janet to talk about her expectations for the big move. Frequent listeners will know that Janet’s bounced around a lot, and at one point, NYC was a place she really hoped to live. Unfortunately, though the city is easy to romanticize, setting down roots there has its own unique set of challenges. Mel talks about how she prepared for the move, from creating Excel spreadsheets to researching all the different boroughs. Janet shares several attempts to try and make things work in New York, including a time where she booked a place to stay on Craigslist… but it turned out to be a brick wall! Fri, 10 May 2024 - 358 - Spill the Baby Tea with Helen: How to Support (and Not Support) a Friend through Miscarriage
Today's topic is a tough one, so I want to give a heads-up: we’re diving into the difficult subject of miscarriage. Cue: “Bigger Than the Whole Sky” by Taylor Swift. About a month ago, I went through a miscarriage, and as a hopeful mom of two, it was the single most devastating thing I’ve ever experienced in my life. It's a heavy but necessary conversation, and today, I share my own experience with this heart-wrenching loss aiming to break the silence and stigma surrounding miscarriage. It's crucial to shed light on this topic because, sadly, it's more common than many realize. I offer insights on how to support a friend or loved one navigating a miscarriage. Practical help, like offering to watch their kids or bringing over nourishing meals, can make a world of difference. And if words fail you, simply being present and offering a listening ear can mean everything. I also touch on what not to say, like minimizing their grief with phrases like "at least" or comparing their loss to something else. It's all about being mindful of our words and actions during such a sensitive time. Through sharing my journey and the outpouring of love and support I received, I hope to encourage more open conversations about miscarriage and grief. Together, we can create a space where sharing our pain leads to more healing and understanding. And for those who have experienced or are experiencing a miscarriage, I hope this episode helps you to feel seen. Please know that your pain is valid, your loss is real. And most of all, you are not alone, and you are loved. Wed, 08 May 2024 - 357 - Episode 270: Celebrating Toisanese Roots, Taiwanese History, & the Art of Chinese Knotting #AANHPI Heritage Month
Happy AANHPI Heritage Month! Every year, we love to highlight our personal stories and connections with our heritage. In this episode, we’re taking a deep dive into specific topics we’ve always been curious about: Why did most early immigrants from China to the US come from the Toisan region? What’s the history & symbolism behind the familiar Chinese knot artistry often used to decorate homes & clothing? And why was the Taiwanese language banned for some time? By bringing attention to these topics, we hope to preserve memories of these practices and appreciate parts of our heritage that we sometimes take for granted. What practices & traditions are unique to your heritage? Fri, 03 May 2024 - 356 - Living Well with Janet: Purposeful Living with Essentialist, Sung Yoo
I really love minimal living. Whether it’s from moving around and traveling a lot in my adult years sampling life in different cities, a desire to leave less of a negative footprint on the planet, a real resonance with the Marie Condo mindset, or a combination of all of the above - the less stuff, the better, and the more minimal and efficient the design, the more I’m drawn to it. That’s why I was so impressed when I saw Sung Yoo’s interview on CNBC about her essentialist approach to life. Sung is a designer and entrepreneur who, in 2022 after living in NY for 18 years, moved to Santa Monica into a 140 sq ft home. Listen in on our conversation about how some major life events (including a breakup and the death of a parent) lead her to her current practices of minimal living and essentialism. Find her @sungsation on Instagram and TikTok and @sungyooquietude on YouTube. These moments often felt like they closed so many doors, but now we realize that they only redirected us onto a different, better path. Fri, 12 Apr 2024 - 350 - Living Well with Janet: Turns Out that Play Is a Mindset, Not an Activity
In a previous episode, I talked about the importance of play and how I have been trying to incorporate more of it into my life. *Spoiler alert* In that episode (In My Play Era, I Took a Heels Class) I talked about how scheduling a playful activity like a dance class actually wasn’t the best way to get into a state of play. In this episode I share a moment when I unexpectedly, and without planning, found myself in a state of play. How and doing what? When you go through big life changes, it can frequently feel like you’re unbalanced and losing control of your circumstances, even if the changes are good ones. This year, Mel’s taking big steps by moving cross-country, while Janet is stepping out of her comfort zone into a new era of carefree play. As you navigate the dating world, it’s important to know what you’re looking for and to watch out for those green, beige, and red flags. We’ve had our fair share of red flag experiences that have taught us more about ourselves and what we’re unwilling to compromise on. If a guy isn’t super action-oriented, or if someone doesn’t want to have kids, these could be major red flags, or even deal breakers for a relationship. And what about red flags when it comes to 1st date locations? Zoos and buffets are off the table for us, but what if someone asked us to be their plus-one to a wedding?! In this episode, we delve into the often overlooked yet profoundly transformative journey of self-growth. Recently, I came across a comment that struck a chord. The listener, who has been with us since the beginning, remarked on the noticeable growth they observed in me over the past few years. This observation made me realize that I’ve done a lot of quiet self work the last few years that had benefited me greatly. Fri, 23 Feb 2024 - 336 - No Dumb Questions with Mel: What does Turning 33 Mean to Me?
As I approach my 33rd birthday this week, I find myself reflecting on the significance of this milestone. In many ways, turning 33 is the age that, in my adolescent mind, symbolized "being an adult", a time when I thought I would have life all figured out. It is also the age I thought I'd be married. However, the contrast between childhood expectations and the realities of adulthood has become abundantly clear. As I sit down to reflect, I can't escape the feeling that 33 is a new chapter in my life. It's a year brimming with opportunities to confront the fears that both intimidate and exhilarate me. It's a year to break down the barriers of procrastination and finally take action on aspirations. This is the year I want to truly LIVE again! Join me as I reflect on the past year, blow out the candles on the birthday cake, and share what I hope to feel when turning 33. __________________________________________ Host: Melody Cheng Editor: Victoria Cheng __________________________________________ P A R T N E R S • BetterHelp: Get 10% off your first month with code “ABG” at betterhelp.com/ABG __________________________________________ C O N N E C T W I T H U S • Subscribe and Follow us @asianbossgirl on Apple Podcasts/Spotify/Amazon Music/YouTube/Instagram/Twitter/Facebook • Listener Survey: Let us know your thoughts on the podcast here • Shoutouts: Give a shoutout on the podcast here • Email: hello@asianbossgirl.com __________________________________________ S U P P O R T U S • Merch: asianbossgirl.myshopify.com • Donate: anchor.fm/asianbossgirl/support • More about us at asianbossgirl.com Learn more about your ad choices. Fri, 09 Feb 2024 - 332 - Living Well with Janet: Dating Tips with Elite Matchmaker, Cassindy Chao
On a recent episode of ABG, I shared that I had a conversation with a matchmaker who offered me the tip to practice flirting more in 2024. Given we are about a week away from Valentine’s day, I’ve invited her to the pod for an extensive chat about dating. We talk about what makes two people compatible, common hang-ups that I (and probably other Asian American people) struggle with in dating, managing shifting gender role expectations, romancing versus womanizing, how a man’s relationship with his mother can impact his relationship with you and how to manage boundaries from both the child and parent perspective. Cassindy Chao is a matchmaker who comes from a family of Matchmakers. She is a former Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan Equities research analyst and happily married Mother of 3 but caught the matchmaking bug in college - matching dozens of couples at the “Wellesley College Asian Association Blind Date Semi-Formal”. Today we’ll share what led us to therapy, tips for finding a therapist that will work with you & challenge you, and how therapy taught us that vulnerability is not a weakness, but a sign of courage. __________________________________________ Hosts: Melody Cheng, Janet Wang, Helen Wu Contributing Editor: Haemee Kang Editor: Michelle Hsieh __________________________________________ P A R T N E R S • Pampers: For trusted protection, trust Pampers, the #1 pediatrician recommended brand. • ZocDoc: Download the ZocDoc app for FREE at ZocDoc.com/ABG • BetterHelp: Get 10% off your first month with code “ABG” at betterhelp.com/ABG __________________________________________ C O N N E C T W I T H U S • Subscribe and Follow us @asianbossgirl on Apple Podcasts/Spotify/Amazon Music/YouTube/Instagram/Twitter/Facebook • Listener Survey: Let us know your thoughts on the podcast here • Shoutouts: Give a shoutout on the podcast here • Email: hello@asianbossgirl.com __________________________________________ S U P P O R T U S • Merch: asianbossgirl.myshopify.com • Donate: anchor.fm/asianbossgirl/support • More about us at asianbossgirl.com Learn more about your ad choices. Fri, 02 Feb 2024 - 330 - No Dumb Questions with Mel: How Do I Maintain Independence in a Relationship?
Today's topic is one I received a lot of votes on for a poll on Instagram. How does one maintain their independence or identity while in a romantic relationship? I've been with my partner for almost 2 years now, and while we are still learning a lot about our preferences, one thing we both learned quickly is that we both highly value our own independence. I share through the WHY aspect of this (*hint hint we both were single for a couple of years & that solo time taught us a lot) & talk through actionable items we take to create that space for ourselves. Wed, 31 Jan 2024 - 329 - Episode 256: Celebrating & Adapting Lunar New Year Traditions from Generation to Generation
For the Asian diaspora, Lunar New Year is the best time of year to reconnect with our family heritage and cultural traditions, while also creating new traditions that are unique to our experiences. Today, we’re focusing on the intersection between American and Chinese & Taiwanese cultures, drawing from our parents’ stories of how Lunar New Year was celebrated in the Motherlands. What did celebrations look like when they were growing up? Which traditions did they choose to pass to the next generation, or adapt to fit American culture so they could “do as the locals do”? And what are new traditions that we want to implement into our own Lunar New Year celebrations? Fri, 26 Jan 2024 - 328 - Spill the Baby Tea with Helen: The Art of Saying 'No': A Journey to 'Less' in 2024
Pause for a moment and ask yourself, what is your one word for 2024? Today, Helen shares her chosen word of the year. Reflecting on the challenges of juggling work, family, and personal aspirations, she candidly discusses societal pressure to achieve and fulfill checkboxes, realizing the need for a shift towards a more intentional and focused life. Her word for 2024 is "LESS," symbolizing a desire to prioritize meaningful experiences, creative projects, and connections over a hectic and busy lifestyle (which, to be honest, is all we’ve known). The episode concludes with Helen sharing words of wisdom from her audience about their words for 2024, promoting themes like resilience, self-love, balance, and more. Wed, 24 Jan 2024 - 327 - Episode 255: How We Spent the Holidays - Balancing Travel, Birthdays, & Reality TV
This January has been busy at ABG, both in our work and personal lives, so we actually haven’t had a chance to really catch up since the Holidays! Mel spent time in the Bay Area with a packed social calendar along with her partner; Helen enjoyed celebrating her son’s 2nd birthday and seeing him get into the Christmas spirit. But in between these busy schedules, they still found time to catch up on some TV shows. In particular, they got heavily invested in Squid Game: The Challenge. Who were their favorite/least favorite contestants? What were their thoughts on the finale? And would either of them want to be on the show?? Spoiler Alert: We’ll be discussing the outcomes/ending of Squid Game: The Challenge, so if you haven’t finished the show yet, come back to this episode later! __________________________________________ Hosts: Melody Cheng and Helen Wu Editor: Michelle Hsieh __________________________________________ P A R T N E R S • ZocDoc: Download the ZocDoc app for FREE at ZocDoc.com/ABG • Shopify: Sign up for a $1 per month trial period at shopify.com/abg • Pampers: For trusted protection, trust Pampers, the #1 pediatrician recommended brand. • Factor: Use code “abg50” to get 50% off at factormeals.com/abg50 • BetterHelp: Get 10% off your first month with code “ABG” at betterhelp.com/ABG __________________________________________ C O N N E C T W I T H U S • Subscribe and Follow us @asianbossgirl on Apple Podcasts/Spotify/Amazon Music/YouTube/Instagram/Twitter/Facebook • Listener Survey: Let us know your thoughts on the podcast here • Shoutouts: Give a shoutout on the podcast here • Email: hello@asianbossgirl.com __________________________________________ S U P P O R T U S • Merch: asianbossgirl.myshopify.com • Donate: anchor.fm/asianbossgirl/support • More about us at asianbossgirl.com Learn more about your ad choices. Fri, 19 Jan 2024 - 326 - Living Well with Janet: In My Play Era, I Took a Heels Class
Play is the act of doing something purely for enjoyment. More often than not, we prioritize the practical. Our adult lives are filled with responsibilities to people at work, to our partners, to kids, parents, extended family, etc. And when it comes to ourselves, there is no shortage of tasks, activities, and engagements that we stack onto our to-do lists for personal and professional development. But play, the act of doing something purely for enjoyment, is so beneficial - essential even - to a well-lived life. This year, I'm on a mission to play more. In this episode, I share that I take a heels class. Listen in as I share my experience - why I chose this as my activity of play, what I learned, and tips for anyone who is also interested in taking a heels class. Fri, 12 Jan 2024 - 324 - No Dumb Questions with Mel: What are My Mom's 2024 Goals?
The topic of reflection and goal setting is pretty popular amongst our generation. Around this time, whether you're looking through some self help podcasts or books, "setting intentions" and "goals" are everywhere. We actually did an episode recently on the main show (ep 252) talking through these topics. After preparing for that episode & being back at home, it made me think about my mom. I wondered “what are her goals for the new year?” and it sparked an interesting dinner conversation with her. I thought it would be insightful to dive into this question on today's episode of NDQWM! Happy Holidays from AsianBossGirl! Whether it was an effort for assimilation, or a convenient way to gather extended family together, the unique combination of Eastern and Western cultures & traditions is something we now appreciate more than ever. Wed, 20 Dec 2023 - 317 - Episode 250: How Green Juice Hangover Cures Led to a Lifelong Friendship for Helen & Janet
In the final round of our 1-on-1 conversation series, Janet and Helen share how they went from meeting each other as “a friend of a friend” to the close, protective sisterhood they now share. Their friendship dynamic holds many similarities (they’re always down for a night out or new adventure), but also many differences (having traditional vs. non-conventional life paths, or being extroverted vs. introverted). It’s these differences in particular that make their friendship so meaningful - Helen may be a social bee who buzzes around the room but Janet is the flower who embraces the bee for a deep conversation. __________________________________________ Hosts: Janet Wang and Helen Wu Editor: Michelle Hsieh __________________________________________ P A R T N E R S • Odd Pieces: Check out oddpieces.com/abg and get 15% off your puzzle with code “ABG” • Pampers: For trusted protection, trust Pampers, the #1 pediatrician recommended brand. • BetterHelp: Get 10% off your first month with code “ABG” at betterhelp.com/ABG __________________________________________ C O N N E C T W I T H U S • Subscribe and Follow us @asianbossgirl on Apple Podcasts/Spotify/Amazon Music/YouTube/Instagram/Twitter/Facebook • Listener Survey: Let us know your thoughts on the podcast here • Shoutouts: Give a shoutout on the podcast here • Email: hello@asianbossgirl.com __________________________________________ S U P P O R T U S • Merch: asianbossgirl.myshopify.com • Donate: anchor.fm/asianbossgirl/support • More about us at asianbossgirl.com Learn more about your ad choices. Fri, 08 Dec 2023 - 314 - Living Well with Janet: The Thing with Grief Is…
When a loss happens (a death, a job, a breakup, whatever) some people experience emotions right away. For me, I usually cry a bit but then soldier on and attend to the To Dos. Only when things calm down do the feelings come. So when I went through a pretty big breakup back in August, while I cried when it initially happened, I became focused on the logistics of moving out, finding a new living situation, and taking care of my car incident (check out Living Well with Janet: How to Keep a Positive Mindset When Everything Feels Like it’s Going to for the bitter tea ). Now, months and months later, I've had more time to process and really think about and feel all the things this past relationship and breakup meant for me. So I want to share a story of how I found myself bawling, alone in my car on the traffic-lined streets of LA, to a Taylor Swift song blasting in the background. What about you? Are you someone who feels grief immediately or does it take time to hit you? __________________________________________ Host: Janet Wang Editor: Victoria Cheng __________________________________________ P A R T N E R S • Pampers: For trusted protection, trust Pampers, the #1 pediatrician recommended brand. This season of holiday gatherings with friends and family is a great time to remind yourself of what you’re thankful for. However, with busy lives and so much going on, gratitude doesn’t always come easily. After all, we are built for survival, not happiness. So this week, we wanted to remind ourselves to slow down and reflect on what we’re grateful for, with a replay of one of our favorite episodes. Practicing gratitude is shown to improve physical and mental health, build your self-esteem, and benefit your ability to share love with others. This episode is one we go back to often, so we hope it can help you feel peaceful and grounded during this time. __________________________________________ Hosts: Melody Cheng, Janet Wang, Helen Wu Editor: Michelle Hsieh __________________________________________ P A R T N E R S • Rakuten: Start all your shopping at rakuten.com or get the free Rakuten app to start saving today • Pampers: For trusted protection, trust Pampers, the #1 pediatrician recommended brand. Fri, 24 Nov 2023 - 310 - Spill the Baby Tea with Helen: How to Show Up for Your Mom Friend feat. Cathy Nguyen
As Helen's world expands with her now-toddler, her relationships with her mommy friends have grown deeper and more significant. Cathy Nguyen is one of those friends! When Helen was pregnant, Cathy thoughtfully dropped off her pregnancy pillow, pack and play, and breast friend and said - “Take this, you’ll need it.” For Helen, it made a world of a difference to feel that level of unasked-for support. In this episode, they talk about how friends have supported them as they go through one of the biggest transitions of their lives, how child-free friends have shown up for them, and how we as mommy friends can best show up for each other. Wed, 22 Nov 2023 - 309 - Episode 246: The Last Time We Were Truly Happy (ABG Q&A)
We’ve done many Q&A episodes with listener-submitted questions, but on today’s episode, we’re going to be asking questions for each other! These are Q’s that listeners might be curious about (How do we feel about being called influencers?), things we’ve always wanted to ask (When was the last time you were truly happy?), and questions about ABG specifically (What new team members do we need?) - all “anonymously” submitted and picked randomly from a bowl. __________________________________________ Hosts: Melody Cheng, Janet Wang, Helen Wu Editor: Michelle Hsieh __________________________________________ P A R T N E R S • Pampers: For trusted protection, trust Pampers, the #1 pediatrician recommended brand. Fri, 17 Nov 2023 - 308 - Living Well with Janet: EMDR, Trauma, and Mental Wellbeing with Dr. Monica Band
What is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and who can benefit from it? Is trauma limited to single-event experiences? How does Gen Z approach mental health versus previous generations? To help me answer these questions is Dr. Monica Band, an award-winning practicing mental health therapist and educator, specializing in providing trauma-informed care for Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC), with an emphasis on Asian American Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) and LGBTQIA+ communities. She is also the host of a new podcast called I Need to Ask You Something from Lemonada Media and the Jed Foundation, a timely series featuring stories about mental health, told directly from teens across the country. No matter your circumstance, I believe almost everyone can benefit from better understanding the role that trauma plays in one’s well-being and learn about methods for better coping in today’s chaotic world. __________________________________________ Host: Janet Wang Editor: Victoria Cheng __________________________________________ P A R T N E R S • Pampers: For trusted protection, trust Pampers, the #1 pediatrician recommended brand. Wed, 15 Nov 2023 - 307 - Episode 245: Talking About Death & Aging with Our Parents
Today’s topic of aging is more somber than usual. Walking through many stages of life with our parents is a blessing for us, but it’s still difficult to come to terms with the passage of time. As physical changes become more apparent, aging is not an avoidable subject. How do we navigate these conversations with our parents and siblings, particularly if it’s taboo to talk about? How will we address life’s natural processes with our own kids in the future? Though it may be challenging to bring up, we believe that normalizing discussions around aging can be healthy for everyone involved, and make difficult future events a bit easier. __________________________________________ Hosts: Melody Cheng, Janet Wang, Helen Wu Contributing Editor: Haemee Kang Editor: Michelle Hsieh __________________________________________ P A R T N E R S • Rakuten: Start all your shopping at rakuten.com or get the free Rakuten app to start saving today • Pampers: For trusted protection, trust Pampers, the #1 pediatrician recommended brand. October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Month in the United States. Although research suggests that over 30% of pregnancies end in miscarriage, this experience can feel extremely isolating and lonely for families. It certainly did for our guest today, Anne Phung Nguyen Guzman, who experienced 2 miscarriages before giving birth to her beautiful baby boy last summer. Lack of support and empathy from her medical team, as well as toxic positivity from people around her, only made this process even more difficult. Anne has since shared her experiences on social media with vulnerability and honesty, in hopes that others who are going through their TTC (Trying to Conceive) journey can feel less alone. Everyone’s TTC journey is unique and deeply personal, so we hope this episode can provide some comfort and insight if you or a loved one are going through this process. __________________________________________ Hosts: Janet Wang and Helen Wu Contributing Editor: Haemee Kang __________________________________________ P A R T N E R S • Pampers: For trusted protection, trust Pampers, the #1 pediatrician recommended brand. Fri, 29 Sep 2023 - 294 - No Dumb Questions with Mel: My Journey with my Body Image Pt. 1
I've been avoiding this topic for 2 years now. My relationship with my body image is something I try to protect, because it's one that has brought me a lot of pain. There was a time that I blamed my body for my unhappiness and the demon of comparison was a very large figure that took over. It's a relationship that I'd consider a "work in progress" despite being in a better mental place. After getting to a place of contentment, I wanted to share my journey with my body image. This journey is one I never thought I'd go through and one I'm still nervous to share for many reasons. I feel like when people think of "body image issues", it looks a certain way to them. However, I learned that it's a spectrum and to not discredit any of these unsettling feelings. Everybody is different and everyone has their own relationship with their physical self. If you choose to listen to this episode, I hope you listen with an open heart and mind. Hopefully, this episode connects with some of you. *Content Warning: There will be talk about weight gain, nutrition, and body image. __________________________________________ Host: Melody Cheng Editor: Victoria Cheng __________________________________________ P A R T N E R S • Pampers: For trusted protection, trust Pampers, the #1 pediatrician recommended brand. Fri, 15 Sep 2023 - 290 - Living Well with Janet: My Healing Girl Summer Hits
'Healing girl summer' is the concept of taking a season to focus on tending to yourself, for yourself. It’s all about taking both the time and the space to prioritize your relationship with yourself over anyone else - to introspect, reflect, care for, inspire, and learn how to love yourself before you can love anyone else. In this episode, I share how I relate to this concept in my life right now and a handful of specific 'healing girl summer' practices that I’m doing. Which one do you plan to try? Or what's something else you're doing to heal and feel inspired? Wed, 06 Sep 2023 - 287 - Episode 235: Demystifying the Porn Industry with Leo Vice
The topic of sex, pornography, and sex work is still considered pretty taboo in our society, particularly in Asian communities. This has been a highly requested topic for ABG, not only to promote conversation, but also because many are curious about representation in an industry that still highly favors Western beauty standards. Asian women are often fetishized and Asian men are often emasculated in mainstream media, so what does it look like in adult entertainment? On this episode, we’ve invited Leo Vice to talk about his experience breaking into the porn industry: how he went from working a corporate job, to self-producing his own content, to being one of very few Asian male porn stars in the industry today. __________________________________________ Hosts: Melody Cheng and Janet Wang Contributing Editor: Haemee Kang Editor: Michelle Hsieh __________________________________________ P A R T N E R S • Pampers: For trusted protection, trust Pampers, the #1 pediatrician recommended brand. • Stitch Fix: Get 25% off your purchase at stitchfix.com/ABG __________________________________________ C O N N E C T W I T H U S • Subscribe and Follow us @asianbossgirl on Apple Podcasts/Spotify/Amazon Music/YouTube/Instagram/Twitter/Facebook • Listener Survey: Let us know your thoughts on the podcast here • Shoutouts: Give a shoutout on the podcast here • Email: hello@asianbossgirl.com __________________________________________ S U P P O R T U S • Merch: asianbossgirl.myshopify.com • Donate: anchor.fm/asianbossgirl/support • More about us at asianbossgirl.com Learn more about your ad choices. Fri, 01 Sep 2023 - 286 - Spill the Baby Tea with Helen: My Baby Was AT My WEDDING?!
Never in all the years I've dreamed up my wedding did I think I’d have my baby by my side. Never could I imagine, even now, not having our lil kiwi head right there with us. Our little man reveled in every moment of the day -- calling out to us with his cheerful "mama baba!" during the ceremony, effortlessly floating from one guest to the other, his infectious energy lighting up the dance floor. He definitely had the best time of his tiny little life and became a true highlight of our wedding. This episode is dedicated to how we planned the logistics of having our baby at our wedding, as well as recounting some of the more special moments of how we incorporated him into our wedding. For those who also chose the "non-traditional" path of welcoming a baby before their wedding, we'd love to hear how you artfully integrated your baby into your wedding day. This year in particular, we want to take full advantage of this season by embracing our summer-loving selves with confidence and unleashing our wild side! It’s the perfect time to look back on some of the hilarious (sometimes embarrassing) and unforgettable moments with friends. We even dive into a bit of the hypothetical: What if you and your friend are stranded on a desert island? How do you flirt at a summer pool party? And: If you were a popsicle, what seductive name would you give yourself? Wed, 12 Jul 2023 - 271 - Episode 227: "Joy Ride" Is Unapologetically Raunchy & the First of Its Kind - ft. Sherry Cola
We had the amazing opportunity to watch “Joy Ride” at South by Southwest and attend the premiere in LA. Both times the movie had us laughing the entire time, but also tearing up at the underlying story of identity and female friendships. Joy Ride is the first of its kind – a film where Asian women get to be raunchy, funny, and imperfect on the big screen. It is an honor to have Sherry Cola (aka Lolo in Joy Ride) join us on the podcast today. She’s a stand up comedian and actress with such a magnetic energy and infectious laughter. Sherry shares what it was like to grow up as a fish out of water, and how special it felt to make this movie. Joy Ride is in theaters July 7, 2023! __________________________________________ Hosts: Melody Cheng, Janet Wang, Helen Wu Contributing Editor: Haemee Kang Editor: Michelle Hsieh __________________________________________ P A R T N E R S • ZocDoc: Download the ZocDoc app for FREE at ZocDoc.com/ABG • Issuu: Sign up for FREE or get 50% off a premium account with code ASIANBOSSGIRL at issuu.com/podcast • Open Studio: Get 30 days free at withopen.com/ABG • Pampers: For trusted protection, trust Pampers, the #1 pediatrician recommended brand. Our Significant Others are back with us on the couch (listen here if you missed Part 1!), this time for a little competition to see who knows their partner best. First we play the Newlywed Game, and then we get serious with some questions… about the FUTURE. For those still in the dating stage, what does the timeline for marriage look like? What values are important in the early years of a relationship? Fri, 30 Jun 2023 - 268 - Spill the Baby Tea with Helen: My Mom Spanked Me! Parenting in the 90s vs Now - feat. Momma Wu
Have you ever wondered how your parents raised you versus how you would raise your own children? My mom would tell me these stories about how we were weaned off diapers by the age of 1, that talk about SIDS and safe co-sleeping was not a popular topic of conversation, that we were spanked as a form of discipline, and organic foods? Who needs that! On this episode, I bring my mom, Momma Wu, on to talk about the differences between parenting as an immigrant mother in the 1990s and parenting as a second-generation Asian American, now, in the 21st century. If you resonated with this episode, share in the comments of AsianBossGirl’s latest Instagram post, linked here. I hope you enjoy! #SpillTheBabyTea __________________________________________ Host: Helen Wu Editor: Victoria Cheng __________________________________________ C O N N E C T W I T H U S • Subscribe and Follow us @asianbossgirl on Apple Podcasts/Spotify/Amazon Music/YouTube/Instagram/Twitter/Facebook • Listener Survey: Let us know your thoughts on the podcast here • Shoutouts: Give a shoutout on the podcast here • Email: hello@asianbossgirl.com __________________________________________ S U P P O R T U S • Merch: asianbossgirl.myshopify.com • Donate: anchor.fm/asianbossgirl/support • More about us at asianbossgirl.com Learn more about your ad choices.
