This episode is the first of our Health Justice Partnership Season where we explore the relationship between access to justice and health services, and what it takes to build an effective health justice partnership and better systems for our communities.
Today our guest on the show is Tessa Boyd-Caine, the founding CEO of Health Justice Australia. Tessa was born and grew up on unceded Gadigal lands of what is now known as Sydney, where she lives again after four years living in England, China and India. Originally a criminologist, she has worked in health, criminal justice and human rights organisations in Australia and internationally. She was previously Deputy CEO of the Australian Council of Social Service and was the inaugural Fulbright Professional Scholar in Non-profit Leadership. Tessa’s PhD looked at the detention and release of offenders living with mental disorders. Darwin Director of Northern Territory Working Women's Centre (NTWWC) Nicki Petrou commenced in 2020, bringing extensive experience from the community and private sectors. Nicki's previous appointments include; as Principal Solicitor of a number of community legal centres roles in management, banking/finance, Government policy and strategy. In 2022, Nicki took a hiatus to work with the Disability Royal Commission. Nicki holds a Diploma in Law, Masters of Business Administration and a Masters of Criminology, has held various Governance roles. Nicki has a strong interest in women's issues, and social justice, advocating to protect and promote the human rights of vulnerable members of our community.

In private practice, she specialises in reflective practice supervision, training, consultation, facilitation, and capacity building for those responding to adult victim-survivors and men who use violence. In this episode Ada provides an insight into how we might begin to approach working with men who use violence, and provides context to the work happening in this space in Victoria. Sophie and Christa (?) explore understandings of sexual assault, discuss the barriers to reporting sexual assault and introduce best practice responses to disclosures including engaging with sexual assault services available in Central Australia.
SARC provides a range of services including counselling to both adults and children who may have experienced (recently or many years ago) any form of sexual assault. Sexual assault can range from verbal harassment; unwanted touching or exhibitionism, to a violent attack.
