Under the Minns Labor Government's new housing targets, Western Sydney faces faster population growth compared to other parts of Sydney, according to analysis by the NSW Opposition. 

The Hills Shire, for instance, is required to increase dwellings by 35% in just five years, while other areas like Wollondilly, Camden, Liverpool, and Ryde also face significant increases. 

This contrasts with a Sydney-wide average of 14% growth. Despite talk of re-balancing growth, Western Sydney communities will bear the brunt, with little infrastructure support from the government. 

The Hills Shire Council Mayor criticised the unachievable targets, attributing them to decisions made without consulting local authorities or considering logistical and financial constraints. 

Mr Speakman concludes, “we’re in this position because Chris Minns signed up Canberra’s housing targets that he could never meet, without any advice from his own Planning Department. All the while he’s still refused to call on Anthony Albanese to reduce immigration to ease the affordability and supply pressures on our housing market.”

Firefighters, NRL stars, and top athletes urge households to install working smoke alarms as Fire and Rescue NSW launches its Winter Fire Safety Campaign. Last winter, almost half of the 1080 homes affected by fires lacked functioning smoke alarms.

Canterbury-Bankstown had the most residential fires (243), followed by inner-city Sydney (241), the Central Coast (235), and Blacktown (228), with kitchen fires being the most common. Winter 2022 saw a record 17 deaths and 87 injuries from house fires, with half of the 959 affected homes lacking working smoke alarms.

Clinton is joined by Minister for Emergency Services Jihad Dib, who emphases“having at least 1 working smoke alarm installed in your home will help safeguard your loved ones and provide peace of mind."

“But the alarms must be in working order to be effective, and we are finding this isn’t the case a lot of the time. In their home safety visits, firefighters have been finding outdated and broken smoke alarms, with some even hanging from ceilings by wires."

“I encourage residents to book a fire safety visit from a firefighter, who can install an alarm for free or make sure your alarm is functioning properly.”

This week Sarah whips up Chocolate & Banana Muffins

Ingredients
2 cups of self-raising flour
½ cup of caster sugar
½ cup chocolate chips
½ teaspoon salt
100 grams butter
1 cup milk
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla essence
1 cup in (2 to 3) mashed bananas

Method
With a fork, stir together in large bowl the flower, castor sugar, chocolate chips and
salt.
In another container, melt the butter, remove from the heat, then add milk, egg and
vanilla and beat well.
Mash and measure the bananas and stir them into the liquid. Tip all the liquid
mixture into the bowl with the dry mixture.
Fold everything together carefully until all the flower is dampened, stopping before
the mixture is smooth.
Spray 12 medium muffin pans with nonstick spray. Put about 1/4 cup of mixture into
each cup.
Bake at 220°C for 12 to 15 minutes, until muffin spring back when pressed in the
centre.

A new study from Macquarie University shows that 10% of shark meat sold in Australian fish shops and markets are in fact, endangered species. 

The study used DNA testing to sample 91 fillets of shark and found 57 (80%) were mislabelled. Nine were from three endangered species in Australian waters, and 43 of the 47 samples labelled flake (91%) were the endangered scalloped hammerhead, greeneye purdog, and school shark. 

The study also found that mislabelling was much higher in takeaway shops (68%) than in fish markets (47%). 

Clinton is joined by ACMS Shark Expert, Dr Leonardo Guida, who says, “Australians would be appalled to know that our governments are allowing endangered species to be caught and sold for Aussies to eat, and that we’re not buying what’s written on the label.” 

“This level of mislabelling highlights not only failures in Australia’s labelling laws, but failures in fishing rules, that continue to permit the harvest of endangered species.”

NSW Treasurer Daniel Mookhey joins Clinton to discuss the Minns government's plan to pay Origin Energy up to $450 million to prolong Eraring, Australia’s biggest coal-fired power station.

Mookhey insists it's not corporate welfare, detailing a deal where the government won't pay upfront but will share risk with Origin.

Taxpayers would take a 20% profit share (capped at $40 million) and cover 80% of losses (capped at $225 million annually).

Origin decides on the risk-sharing deal by March 31, 2025, and 2026, for the following fiscal year.

As Australians face mounting financial pressures, recent research has revealed concerning trends in pet healthcare. Over 50% of pet owners are adjusting their approach to their pet’s well-being due to economic constraints, which raises serious concerns about the health and welfare of our beloved companions.

Clinton is joined by Nadia Crighton, spokesperson for Pet Insurance Australia, who emphasises, “The results of the latest survey* underscore the profound impact of financial strain on pet healthcare decisions nationwide.”

The study found that 21.5% of pet guardians are scaling back on regular check-ups and preventive care appointments. Additionally, nearly 13% are forgoing essential treatments for fleas, ticks, and worms. This trend is particularly worrisome given the extended tick season observed recently, which refers to a longer period of the year when ticks are active and can cause health issues in pets.

Ingredients
4 free-range eggs
⅓ cup vegetable oil
1 small red onion, finely diced
1 tsp diced ginger
1 tsp diced garlic
2 tbsp finely sliced coriander roots and stems
2 rindless bacon rashers, finely diced
2 tbsp shao hsing wine, or dry sherry
4 cups steamed rice
⅔ cup finely sliced spring onions
1-2 tbsp light soy sauce
¼ tsp sesame oil coriander leaf to garnish (optional)
Serve with Kylie Kwong's prawn wontons (optional)

Method
1. Break eggs into a bowl and beat lightly. Heat half the oil in a hot wok until surface
seems to shimmer slightly. Pour beaten eggs into the wok and leave to cook on the
base of the wok for 10 seconds before folding egg mixture over onto itself with a
spatula and lightly scrambling for about one minute or until almost cooked through.
Carefully remove omelette from wok with a spatula and drain on paper towel. Set
aside.
2. Heat remaining oil in the hot wok and stir fry onion, ginger, garlic, coriander roots,
stems and bacon for one minute. Pour in wine or sherry and stir fry for one minute.
3. Add rice to the wok with spring onions, soy sauce, sesame oil and reserved
omelette and stir fry for two minutes or until well combined and rice is heated
through. Use a spatula to break up the omelette into smaller pieces while cooking.
Transfer rice to a bowl and serve garnished with coriander.

Serve as a meal for four or as part of a shared meal for four to six. Try serving it with
Kylie Kwong's prawn wontons (optional)

As cost-of-living pressures mount, Australian spending habits are continuing to evolve to face rising costs. However, with a 3.6% increase in essential spending reported nationally, Australians are increasing having to reallocate their budgets to cover rising costs of utilities, insurance, and supermarket spending.

In fact, consumers are clocking up an average of $1,472 per month on essentials, led by increased spend on insurance (+8 per cent), utilities (+6 per cent), pharmacies (+6 per cent) and supermarkets (+5 per cent).

The report has also highlighted a generational spending divide, with Aussies aged 25-29 feeling the largest cost of living pressures, pulling back on spending across essential (-3.1%) and discretionary (-3.8%) categories - the only age group to do so. Comparatively, Aussies over 65 have increased spending across essentials and discretionary items, with insurance and travel witnessing the highest growth in each category.

Clinton and Abul Rizvi, former deputy secretary of Immigration, discuss reports that over 60,000 of 80,000 failed asylum seekers in Australia are allowed to stay, with full work and study rights. 

Government data shows these individuals, who initially arrived on work, study, or tourist visas, had their protection claims rejected but remain in the country. 

Out of those, around 61,525 have work rights on bridging visas, and 61,554 have study rights. Only 17 failed asylum seekers were removed from the country in the last two months.

Clinton is joined by radio veteran Pete Graham to discuss the passing of his friend, Aussie music icon Frank Ifield, who left us on the weekend at the age of 86.

Ifield, renowned for his unique incorporation of yodelling into his songs, achieved remarkable success in the 1960s with four UK number one hits. Notably, he also played a pivotal role in The Beatles' early career by providing them with a platform as a support act in 1962.

With a musical journey spanning seven decades, Ifield recorded an impressive 25 albums and was honored with the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2009.

His passing occurred peacefully in Sydney on Saturday night.

But Ms Jameson, says blanket bans never work. “Where are the parameters?  Who’s going to manage it?   Which social media platforms come under the banner?

So many digital platforms have a ‘social’ element - even primary school programs
like Seesaw do,” she says.

“Kids are smarter than many of us in this space and can circumvent the boundaries already in place by the government and platforms, they can’t even keep under 13s off it, so I’m not sure how they’re going to police this. Instead of banning them, lets teach our kids good digital literacy and how to be good digital citizens.

Let’s promote education over restriction.”

Clinton and Dr. Anne-Marie Laslett, lead researcher at La Trobe University's Centre for Alcohol Policy Research, discuss a new study in Addiction journal revealing that about a fifth of adult Australians experienced harm from excessive drinking by acquaintances.

The study highlights the disproportionate impact on women, especially those living with heavy drinkers.

Dr. Laslett emphasises the need for urgent policy changes to support affected regional women and children. Over two-thirds of participants reported heavy drinkers in their lives, with over 22% reporting negative effects.

Six percent experienced harm from household members' drinking, 15% from non-cohabitating family, seven percent from friends, and three percent from co-workers in the past year.

Ingredients

Pastry
1 3/4 cup plain flour
150 gram (4½ ounces) cold butter, chopped coarsely
1 egg yolk
2 teaspoon lemon juice
1 tablespoon iced water

Filling
2 teaspoons olive oil
1 onion, finely chopped
3 rindless bacon slices (195g), chopped finely
3 eggs 300 millilitres pouring cream
1/2 cup (125ml) milk
3/4 cup (120g) coarsely grated gruyère cheese

Method
1. Make pastry: Sift flour into a medium bowl; rub in butter. Add egg yolk, juice and
enough of the water to make ingredients cling together. Knead gently on a floured
surface until smooth. Cover; refrigerate 30 minutes.
2. Preheat oven to 200°C/400°F.
3. Roll pastry between sheets of baking paper until large enough to line a 25cm (10-
inch) round, 3.5cm (1½-inch) deep, loose-based fluted tart tin. Lift pastry into tin;
gently press pastry into the base and side. Trim edge. Place tin on oven tray. Line
pastry case with baking paper; fill with dried beans or rice. Bake for 10 minutes.
Remove paper and beans; bake for a further 10 minutes or until golden. Cool.
4. Reduce oven to 180°C.
5. Heat oil in a small frying pan over medium heat; cook onion and bacon, stirring,

6. Whisk eggs in a medium bowl; whisk in cream, milk and cheese. Pour mixture
into pastry case.
7. Bake quiche for 35 minutes or until filling is set (see tips). Leave in tin for 5
minutes before removing from tin.

Ingredients
270ml full-fat coconut milk
2 tbsp canola oil
120g green beans, trimmed then halved
120g cherry tomatoes, halved

SATAY CHICKEN
500g chicken thigh fillets, cut into 2.5cm cubes
1 tbsp curry powder (any brand is fine)
1 tsp white sugar
½ tsp cooking salt
2 tsp red curry paste
THAI PEANUT SAUCE
120g (½ cup) natural peanut butter, smooth
1½ tbsp caster sugar
2 tsp curry powder
¾ tsp cooking salt
¼ tsp chilli or cayenne powder, optional
2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
1½ tbsp red curry paste
2 tsp dark soy sauce
1¼ cups water

Method
Step 1
Put satay chicken ingredients in a bowl with ¼ cup of coconut milk. Mix to coat, then
set aside.
Step 2
Place all the peanut sauce ingredients, except water, in a separate bowl and whisk
to combine. Add water and remaining coconut milk. Whisk until combined.
Step 3
Heat oil in a large heavy-based frypan over high heat until very hot. Add chicken and
stir for 2 minutes. Spread chicken in a single layer, leave for 30 seconds, toss,
spread, and leave for another 30 seconds. Do this twice more to get some colour on
the chicken.
Step 4
Pour in the peanut sauce and add the beans. Reduce heat to medium and simmer
for 5 minutes. Add tomatoes and simmer for a further 2 minutes or until the beans
are tender-crisp and the sauce thickens.
Step 5
Serve over jasmine rice with peanuts, coriander, chilli and a wedge of fresh lime.

TO SERVE
Jasmine rice, cooked
¼ cup peanuts, roughly chopped
Coriander leaves
Sliced red chilli (optional)
Lime wedges
