- 8922 - Ours To Protect - Solid Fuel - Colette Moloney
Tipperary County Council in partnership with five other Local Authorities, carried out solid fuel sampling to monitor compliance with the requirements of the Air Pollution Act 1987 (Solid Fuels) Regulations 2022. Of the six samples obtained by Tipperary County Council, five were found to breach the prescribed sulphur limit. Senior Executive Scientist with Tipperary County Council says the public should only purchase solid fuel from reputable fuel merchants. They should also check the product is marked as complying with the Air Pollution Act. The regulations require that retailers only market approved fuels and are urged to check with their suppliers. The burning of high sulphur coal products creates air pollution from (i) sulphur dioxide (SO2) which causes respiratory problems, and (ii) increased levels of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) that can pass through the lungs and enter the blood stream causing cardiopulmonary disorders and strokes. The vast majority of the deaths attributable to air pollution in Ireland are caused by fine particulate matter.

Local communities can qualify for funding through Community Foundation Ireland and the National Parks & Wildlife Service to either develop a new Community Biodiversity Action Plan or support to implement measures from an existing plan. Over the coming years, Local Authorities will also be developing Local Biodiversity Action Plans. Active, informed and engaged communities will help us ensure that policy-making for biodiversity is a two way street: top down and bottom up. The grants connect community groups with scientific expertise, helping them to better understand their local biodiversity. Successful grantees work with ecologists to create a Community Biodiversity Action Plan and can then seek funding to implement it. All of the data they collect is shared with the National Biodiversity Data Centre, making a valuable contribution to citizen science in Ireland. From February 1st anyone purchasing drinks in a plastic bottle or aluminium can will be charged a deposit. This will be 15 cent on a 150ml to 500ml container and 25 cent on containers from 500ml to 3 litres. The deposit can be reclaimed by returning the container to any of the ‘reverse vending machines’ located in stores across the county. Do not crush cans or bottles. Containers must be undamaged to get your refund. Make sure containers are empty and keep the lids on bottles. No dairy product bottles or food cans can be put in machine – only drinks bottles and cans. Look for the Re-Turn logo on the container – otherwise it will be rejected by the machine. - 8912 - Ours To Protect - 100 million Trees
This week Tipp FM looked at: The 100 Million Trees Project to see 100 million Native Irish Trees planted very densely in small areas (from 0.1 to 0.25 acre or 4,356sq ft to 10,890sq ft – equal to one to two basketball courts) all over Ireland within the next 10 years. Between 1,000 and 2,500 native trees in those spaces using the Miyawaki method. They are calling for farmers and homeowners across Tipperary who can offer a site for planting and it’s free for the landowner: All trees will be provided by the project and the planting will be done by professional planters All that’s needed is a minimum of 0.1 acres away from power lines, underground pipes, septic tanks etc that can be rotovated in advance of the planting
Wed, 29 May 2024 - 07min - 8911 - Ours To Protect - Christmas Recycling
Recycling all that Christmas waste Christmas is one of the biggest occasions across the globe for waste generation, with Ireland expected to produce 100,000 tonnes of packaging waste this year. A recent survey by repak.ie of 1,000 people concluded that 92% of respondents said that would make a conscious effort to recycle packaging correctly over the festive period. Natural Christmas trees can be recycled at nine Tipperary County Council sites across the county, and at bring centres that handle green waste, but fake trees must go in general waste if they can no longer be re-rused. Any broken fairy lights and used batteries can be recycled for free as WEEE recycling and should never go into general waste bins. Unfortunately most Christmas decorations and shiny or glittery cards and wrapping paper are not recyclable as they are mixed materials. Here’s a few websites if you want to know more ! https://www.mywaste.ie/green-christmas/ https://clonmelwaste.ie/recycle-centre/ https://repak.ie/news-room/ireland-packaging-christmas/ Sitewide search | Tipperary County Council (tipperarycoco.ie)
Wed, 29 May 2024 - 00min - 8910 - Ours To Protect- Sustainable Christmas
The excesses of Christmas will lead to a huge amount of food waste and additional recycling once again this year. By gifting responsibly you can avoid quite a bit of this waste – give a voucher instead of a physical present Gift an experience Make a list before doing your Christmas shopping - and stick to it. Remember the shops will open again – you don’t need to stock up with a month’s supply of food. Wed, 29 May 2024 - 05min - 8907 - Ours To Protect - Food Waste
In this episode of Ours To Protect Tipp FM looked at food waste in local businesses and an appeal for food and drink businesses in County Tipperary to sign up for the Food Waste Charter to help reduce wastage along the supply chain. One third of all food produced for human consumption is wasted generating up to 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions and up to two thirds of this waste comes from businesses. But reducing food waste in your business can save you money and reduce your carbon emissions. STEP 1: Make a start, gather basic food waste data STEP 2: Review and improve your data STEP 3: Establishing your food waste estimate STEP 4: Refine, update and continue NEXT STEPS: Food waste has significant environmental implications but, for your business, it can have a serious impact on your margins. It has been found that over 60% of food coming out of food service businesses is potentially avoidable and the cost of this to your business is ~€3 per kg (this is purchasing costs only). You can now use your initial food waste figure to estimate the true cost of food waste for your business. Multiply your annual tonnage by €3,000 and this will provide an indicative cost of purchasing the avoidable fraction of your food waste. For more information on food waste from different sectors see the following resources on foodwastecharter.ie
Wed, 29 May 2024 - 07min - 8906 - Ours To Prptect - Clean Air Week
This week Tipp FM looked at: Clean air week and cars idling outside of schools During October and November 2023 Green-Schools Travel Officers and local students conducted vehicle idling surveys (engines running while stationary) with over 100 schools across the country. The aim was to capture the extent of idling outside schools and provide a snapshot of the issue in Ireland. Idling was recorded for all vehicle types, and ranged from one to 25 minutes, with one Tipperary school recording one driver leaving their car idling for 20 minutes while there was no-one in the car.
Wed, 29 May 2024 - 07min - 8905 - Ours To Protect - Carbon Credits - Brendan Guildea
Carbon Credits – What are they and how do they work?... Did you know... A carbon market allows investors and corporations to trade both carbon credits and carbon offsets simultaneously. This mitigates the environmental crisis, while also creating new market opportunities. New challenges nearly always produce new markets, and the ongoing climate crisis and rising global emissions are no exception.

Wed, 29 May 2024 - 08min - 8903 - Ours To Protect - Tom Houlihan - Ash Dieback
This week Tipp FM looked at ash dieback in the country and what we can do to reduce it’s impact Did you know… Ash dieback is a serious disease of ash trees caused by the invasive fungal pathogen Hymenoscyphus fraxineus The pathogen originates in Asia and was brought to Europe in the early 90s. Ash dieback was first detected in the Republic of Ireland in October 2012 on plants imported from continental Europe. The disease is now prevalent throughout most of the island of Ireland and is likely to cause the death of the majority of the ash trees over the next two decades.
