Tue, 02 Apr 2024 - 45min - 562 - Mikhail Bulgakov: the author on the front line of Ukraine's new 'culture war'
Day 765.
Today, in a special episode over Easter Monday, Francis visits the Bulgakov Museum in Kyiv to discuss the life and times of one of the most controversial writers in Ukraine today.
Milkail Bulgakov (1891-1940), author of The Master and Margarita, was a witness to the Ukrainian War of Independence between 1917 and 1921 – resurrecting it in his novel The White Guard – and is therefore a pivotal figure in the literary history of Ukraine, especially given his vivid depiction of Kyiv at war, as it is now.
Francis talks to researcher Maryna Sychenko about the current battle over Bulgakov's legacy, and whether he should be seen as a Russian or Ukrainian writer. Plus, she shares her own memories of the full-scale invasion.

Mon, 05 Feb 2024 - 54min - 516 - 'Russians could destroy my home, but they will not destroy my future': Interview with a Ukrainian student in the US
Today, we’re publishing one of the last interviews conducted by David on our US trip back in September 2023. Listeners may remember David hosted a panel discussion at Georgetown University, which we later shared as a special, two-part episode.
After that recording several of the students stayed to chat to their professors and David.
One of the students was a freshman called Marta. Originally from Kharkiv, she had left Ukraine to study in the US. Her stories were fascinating and moving. We decided to interview her properly and returned to Georgetown a week later.
In this special episode, Marta speaks about her experience growing up in Ukraine, applying for university while the air raid alarm wailed and the emotional challenge of keeping in touch with her father, who is fighting in the war.

Mon, 29 Jan 2024 - 48min - 510 - Inside the bunker with Zelensky: an exclusive interview with Simon Shuster
In his first book, The Showman, Simon relates how he saw firsthand Zelensky conduct this war, from the bunker to the frontlines, and how he used his experience as a communicator to articulate, and inspire, the country’s defiance.
In the book and our interview, Simon examines how the brutal invasion and Ukrainian resistance changed Zelensky, creating a tougher, more serious man than he had first met in 2019 on the eve of his astonishing presidential victory.
It was a privilege to be able to speak to Simon – a longtime listener of the podcast – and understand more about his time in the Presidential bunker during the first year of the war.
Simon's book is available from the following links:
