    It’s easy find ourselves headed off course in life, but when we look to our own GPS and inner knowing, it’s amazing what wisdom and guidance gifts we each possess. Host Holley Kelley invites listeners to consider the advice the older version of “you” might give to “younger you”-- and it is surprising to discover what older you has to say! Each listener is encouraged to put pen to paper or fingers to the keyboard and write a letter – that is, “A Letter to my Younger Self” – and see what amazing wisdom and even sage advice shows up. Not only does she share her letter but she also reinforces that we each hold inside us now the wisdom of our elder self that we can utilize to get the most out of life. It is an extraordinary exercise but also reveals our own insight to help us navigate forward and trust ourselves and what we’ve come to know.

    In this Aging GreatFULLy power-hour we invite you to embrace all things summer with one of our favorite health coaches, founder of Health Coach Academy, podcast host and returning guest, Omar Cumberbatch! We will be talking all things summertime fun, adventure and health as we enjoy this season that seems to come and go all too quickly.

  • 291 - Dementia Prevention with Emily Clionsky, MD and Mitchell Clionsky, PhD

    Join this incredible power-hour as we discover ways to improve our brain’s future! Welcoming special guests, Emily Clionsky, MDandMitchell Clionsky, PhD, authors of the new book DEMENTIA PREVENTION: Using Your Head to Save Your Brain(Hopkins Press, April 4, 2023). And their message is a clear one – dementia is not inevitable! Furthermore, it is preventable in 1 out of 2 people! But that isn’t just their opinion, their work is deeply steeped in research.

    Drs. Clionsky, a physician and neuropsychologist couple have cared for their own parents with dementia, and talk about ways to improve your brain's future, many of which may seem surprising. From vitamins, to your activities, social infrastructure, even mental outlooks, and even how you breathe while you sleep and so much more can play a significant role in how dementia may impact our lives.

    In fact, in Dementia Prevention: Using Your Head to Save Your Brain, they share 20 factors that impact dementia risk, including 17 that are changeable in adulthood as well as proven psychological methods to change your habits and health to alter your brain’s future. They educate us on the various types of dementia and clear up some confusion we may have on this topic. But in this episode, they also offer a cliff-notes and layman’s understanding of what exactly is happening when dementia takes hold, allowing us to better understand how we can utilize our stakeholder opportunity to circumvent its potential onset.

    But this neuropsychologist team also focuses on areas often overlooked such as hearing, vision, and the many health factors such as blood pressure, exercise and sugar levels that are important to be aware of as it relates to dementia. They echo a welcoming sense of empowerment for everyone, even those who may have a genetic predisposition for dementia, to take control and change several risk factors in their favor.

    Together, they have treated more than 25,000 patients with cognitive impairment and are responsible for developing the Memory Orientation Screening Test (MOST), which has been used by hundreds of doctors. It brings together proven science from a wide spectrum of medical specialties -- ones that often do not talk to one another or read the others’ research. Drs.     Emily Clionsky, MD is an internal medicine doctor with 25 years of experience and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. She has treated thousands of patients with memory loss at her private practice. Mitchell Clionsky, PhD is a board-certified clinical neuropsychologist with 45 years of experience evaluating and treating patients with cognitive impairment, dementia, ADHD, and traumatic brain injury. When Terri married her husband, diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease before they met, she brought her confidence and a wealth of knowledge and experience to bear on caring for him. Her professional experience has informed her approach to caregiving and to encouraging Parkinson's caregivers to make self-care real, practical, and possible.

    Terri Pease is on a mission to educate family members, spouses, and caregivers of those with Parkinson's Disease, Alzheimer's, and other progressive illnesses on how to maintain a sense of self, ease loneliness, and ask for help while taking care of their patient/loved one. Her book, Love, Dignity & Parkinsons, serves as a roadmap and a shepherding hand for those who find themselves in the care partner and/or caregiver role and seeking support and guidance. With more and more people caring for loved ones, her book offers practical information to help family carers every step of the way.

    Terri shares how to solicit support from others to thwart the ever-present challenges of loneliness and exhaustion caregivers experience. She shares the difference between self-care and after care, and describes why Parkinson’s is a thief and a two-person condition. She offers important advice for families to support the primary caregiver to help shoulder the burden and prevent caregiver burnout and even discusses the often overlooked conversation of creating caregiver agreements and understandings made with the person carers may find themselves caring for.     A returning guest and author of the book, Say Yes to Life, Elliott Robertson previously joined us to share all the ways we can Say Yes to Life. In this power-hour of enlightYOUment, Robertson extends another invitation to release habits that interfere with heart-centered living, including the habit of dismissing, discounting, or postponing your heart’s desires. Robertson invites us to live in our sovereignty through releasing hold on negative beliefs about ourselves or others and highlights how this can serve as a gateway to cultivate new habits of holding unconditional love for ourselves and allow for a greater capacity to tap into the Inner Knower within each of us.
