- 266 - The Overlap of Christian Stewardship and Environmentalism
Conversations about the environment, climate change, and “going green” quickly become mired in controversy and fierce debate. But what does God say? Are there principles from Scripture that can teach us how to be proper stewards of the world God has made, and how have Anabaptists in the past cared about the creation?

Thu, 14 Nov 2024 - 53min - 265 - Is the King James Version God’s Only Preserved Word?
Some claim that there are variations in the manuscripts that our English Bibles are translated from, and therefore this proves the Bible is false. Others say that the King James Version is the only true Bible. How should we think about these issues? What is a proper understanding of textual variants, and is the KJV a good translation? David Bercot presents a framework for how to think about these issues, and explores the history of some of the texts that English Bible translations are based on.

Thu, 15 Aug 2024 - 33min - 252 - Islam and the Birth of Christian “Just War”
Initially, the early Christians refused to fight. Over time, they adopted a Just War stance, and in time used this to justify the forcible conversion of conquered peoples. With the Crusades, Just War was expanded to include what was called “Holy War,” and Christendom went to war in the Middle East with the Islamic empires. Stephen Russell outlines these critical pieces of the church’s history and explains how the church modified the Islamic concept of jihad to justify attacking their enemies. Russell shows how this was a seismic shift away from the teachings of the New Testament and what the early church had practiced.

Thu, 08 Aug 2024 - 39min - 251 - Building Community Peace Through Personal Peace
Janelle Glick suggests that, as we come to peace with our own lives and the God who is working in us, we are more at peace with others and God who is working in them, which makes unconditional love and peace in community possible.
Janelle also offers that reading through the New Testament and watching closely for the presence of women brings pleasant messages of hope for women. As male and female, we are called by Jesus to serve together in our communities. This involves hearing from each other and having challenging but peaceful conversations together.

Thu, 01 Aug 2024 - 41min - 250 - What Happened to the Church in the Middle East?
For hundreds of years, there was a vibrant, growing church across the Middle East, spreading across places like Iraq and Syria, expanding as far as China, India, and beyond. These Christians have largely been lost to history; what happened to them? What events led to their disappearance, and what does that mean for us today? Lucas Hilty explains this largely forgotten disappearance of a once well-established church network. The tragedy of a region losing Christianity is a sober thing, and there is much for us to consider from this story.

Thu, 27 Jun 2024 - 31min - 245 - Can I Lose My “Ticket to Heaven”?
We should not see salvation as a single event, John Coblentz says, but as God’s ongoing work. Focusing on a time when we “made a decision” or “went forward”in response to an invitation or “prayed the sinners prayer” can trouble believers who should have assurance and confidence while giving false assurance to those not walking with Jesus.
John discusses union with Christ and the Spirit as a stamp and a guarantee of our inheritance.

Roseanne Bauman offers a definition of forgiveness, looks at an example of forgiveness from the Bible, and speaks about her own story of forgiveness. John Coblentz writes, “The church in its current state is not always glorious to us. We are still imperfect - our music is at times off-key, our theology is at times wide of the mark, and our interactions with each other fall short of the love we profess.”John encourages us to see what God wants to do and to work for the broader church, even in the face of difficulty, failed or abusive relationships, and the inherent tendency to shrink our associations to those like us. John talks about appreciating and welcoming believers from varied cultures.

Thu, 23 May 2024 - 31min - 239 - War, Politics, and the Patient Faithfulness of God’s People
We’re seeing growing conflict once again in the Middle East, with America and its allies getting more involved. How should we be thinking about it? How do we avoid the temptation to take sides and think of this in patriotic terms of “our” country beating the “enemy”? Stephen Russell shares how he came to believe in nonresistance, and principles for how the Anabaptist people should be thinking about politics, war, and foreign policy. Instead of trusting in worldly nations, we should be trusting in Jesus and his kingdom, and patiently and faithfully pointing people to Christ instead of a political agenda.

Thu, 04 Jan 2024 - 36min - 227 - Why Care about Apologetics?
Jesus appealed to prophecies and to his “works” do call people to faith in him. Peter and Paul used apologetic methods suited for their audiences. Daniel Yoder thoughtfully introduces a few topics and methods of Christian apologetics (from the Greek apologia,“defense, answer”) and defends the importance of this mode of thinking for strengthening believers and for engaging with unbelievers. While Anabaptists may have invested less in formal apologetics than some other traditions, the early Anabaptists very much cared about proclaiming Jesus as Lord and explaining their beliefs to others. This is an example we should follow.

Thu, 21 Sep 2023 - 18min - 219 - Why the Church Educates
We educate for reading the scripture and for service. Paul Emerson urges us to educate for eternity. Children getting good jobs or going to college is not the central aim (though it is not excluded). Since all wisdom and knowledge come from Christ, education is ultimately Christology. Learning how to read scripture is not just a matter of learning to read words in the early grades. For example, the study of literature and genre in high school or college also provides valuable training. The conversation ranges across the role of postsecondary bible schools as well as K-12 education.

A viewer asks: “Does Jesus really call us as His children to build anything?......an identity, a structure, or a culture or rather to simply align ourselves with what He has already promised us He would build in and through His ekklesia?” This was in response to Melvin Lehman’s previous episode “The New Conservatives”. In this episode Melvin argues that the New Testament calls churches to proactively create culture.

Thu, 13 Jul 2023 - 18min - 214 - Fostering Faith While Honoring Questions
Doubt is not a sin and questions are not always doubt. Questions and doubts should spur us to dig deeper in the appropriate areas, be our struggle factual, philosophical, emotional or volitional. Daniel gives practical encouragement for each dimension of doubt. We should be active in our search for understanding and growth. Even as we wrestle with Christian doctrine we must not give up on prayer and spiritual formation. Beyond our own faith, we should be concerned with helping others come to an understanding of the basis of Christian belief. The body of Christ has a role in preventing doubt as well as walking with others in the midst of honest doubt. The scripture calls us to have mercy on those who doubt.

Thu, 29 Jun 2023 - 17min - 213 - Doubt is not Sin. It is Temptation.
How does a struggling believer find reassurance? Daniel Yoder discusses four categories of doubt: factual, philosophical, emotional and volitional. In dealing with any of these we need to investigate the truth. The power is not in the strength of our faith but in the power of God in whom we have faith. Based on Romans 10, Daniel calls us to reconfirm our confession of Christ as Lord and submission to his Lordship. Whether or not we are bothered by doubt we should be regularly examining ourselves to see if we are in the faith (2 Corinthians 13). How do we examine ourselves? Daniel gives three suggestions for self-examination.
- Do I believe in Jesus? Am I obeying Jesus? Am I learning to know Jesus better?

Thu, 18 May 2023 - 33min - 210 - What is the Anabaptist Vision?
Anabaptists easily outline high ideals. Living them is a continuing challenge which we need to embrace. How can Christians see risks and even failure as beneficial? Kyle Stoltzfus encourages us to embrace paths where we don't know the outcome and leave growth and increase up to God. We should remember that, “There is a God. I'm not him. Thank God for that."

Thu, 06 Apr 2023 - 18min - 207 - Salvation as Participating with God
Salvation is not a ticket to heaven, but the life of God planted in human hearts. The Holy Spirit brings us into God’s life and enables us to do His work in the world. Chester Weaver explains this through various paired ideas. “Truth walks on two legs.”

Thu, 23 Mar 2023 - 48min - 206 - Responding to Abuse: Past and Present
Anabaptists, like most of American society, are much more conscious of abuse than we were a few decades ago. There have been improvements in how we respond. There have also been changes in our response that are not necessarily for the better. Roseanne Bauman describes the way individuals and churches tended to respond in the past and comments on how responses in our communities have shifted.

Someone discloses abuse. How do I respond? Roseanne Bauman urges us to honor their courage in speaking, to listen well and talk little, and to connect them to someone who has appropriate experience to walk with them. This is the first in a series of two episodes where Jaran Miller interviews Roseanne about responding to sexual abuse.

Thu, 23 Feb 2023 - 20min - 204 - Should We Celebrate Anabaptist Beginnings?
Is it unhealthy to celebrate something that lifts up individuals or that marks a division among believers? How do we view Anabaptist history in relation to other Christian traditions? Long-time Mennonite historian John Roth calls us to “right remembering” of history, the good, the bad, and the mixed. There is much to celebrate in Anabaptism past and present, but we do well to recognize the shadow sides of our strengths as well as what we have received from other traditions.

Thu, 09 Feb 2023 - 40min - 203 - Union with Christ or Gospel of Sin Management?
The gospel is about all that God created us to be. Not just managing sin, but living life with God and ruling creation with Him. Without downplaying the barrier of our sin that is overcome in Jesus’ death and resurrection, Kyle Stoltzfus urges us to see the large, rich picture that God has in mind for our living “in Christ.” In light of that, our practical struggle against sinful actions, becomes a fight for our true selves which are found in Christ.
The phrase "gospel of sin management" and the analogy of the barcode come from Dallas Willard’s book, The Divine Conspiracy.

Thu, 26 Jan 2023 - 23min - 202 - Stepping into Scripture’s Stories
“We don’t get to choose what story we are living in, but we can choose what character we will be.” New Testament scholar Paul Lamicela helps us see ourselves in the story of Lot’s family in Sodom and the story of David and Goliath. (Hint, we are not primarily David or Goliath in that story!) Also discussed is how Jesus saw Himself in the story of Israel in the wilderness.

Thu, 12 Jan 2023 - 23min - 201 - War Prayer by Mark Twain
Twain’s biting satire exposes the temptation to think God is on “our side” of a war. Sadly, Mark Twain himself was not a believer, but his insight into Christian hypocrisy and the perversions that come with tying religion to nationalist or imperial causes is well worth listening to. Let’s follow the Lord of peace and flee all attempts to enlist God in human war-mongering.

Thu, 29 Dec 2022 - 14min - 200 - Biblical Interpretation and Church Offense
“There is nothing, nothing harder to do in my life than church.” Dean Taylor responds to audience comments on deep disappointment with Anabaptism and on difficulties in understanding the bible due to textual complications and lack of historical context. We will often be surprised at the results if we are willing to be humbly and honestly up front with our church leaders. Dean also argues for the trustworthiness of what is known as the “Majority Text” or “Byzantine Text” of the New Testament.
These comments came in response to the inaugural episode of Anabaptist Perspectives. https://anabaptistperspectives.org/episodes/the-essence-of-anabaptism

As our board and staff were together recently, we hammered out a vision statement.
“Using digital media to encourage allegiance to Jesus’s sacrificial kingdom.”
We also discussed operation improvements. Until now we have run this podcast by seasons and currently we are in Season 4. Going forward, we will not be using seasons. We will instead release episodes biweekly and avoid extensive season breaks.
With more time between episodes, this is a good chance to check out our other podcast. “Essays for King Jesus” consists of professionally narrated essays from our blog.
Also you can listen to the audiobook we produced last year in partnership with David Bercot. Find In God We Don’t Trust on Apple books or search any major audiobook platform.

[Note: After this episode, we will be shifting to a biweekly release schedule.]
One YouTube commenter wrote: “In the Anabaptist worldview, we value community above almost everything else. We are often even reluctant to discuss controversial Bible passages for fear of disrupting our sense of community. In the academic world, on the other hand, promoting, debating, and defending your own controversial views is an essential skill.” This was only one of the comments left on Vince Beiler’s episode “Does Academia Cause Loss of Faith?”. In this episode, Vince is joined by Roseanne Bauman to discuss questions around study, debate and disagreement, and living in communities where your field of work is an unusual choice.

A listener commented “I love the theology and cannot stand the exclusivity” in reference to John’s episode “The Kingdom of God in Anabaptist Thought.”
John affirms the existence of other Kingdom Christians. His comments also clarify what he means by Kingdom theology. We are to be a city set on a hill, which is a light to the world as a community, not just as individuals. We are to be a society of the redeemed demonstrating what the world should look like.

The church planter is like a rubber tire between the bumpers of two vehicles. Allen Roth describes the challenge of operating with integrity and with respect for both the sending culture and receptor culture while engaged in cross-cultural evangelism.
Allen describes what he sees as Anabaptist core values, noting how we can easily be blind to our own spiritual heritage and to how we are shaped by our own culture. He also points us to key passages for cross cultural ministry such as Acts 3, Acts 10, Acts 15, Acts 20, and Romans 14 and 15.

Thu, 16 Jun 2022 - 19min - 182 - Why We Started Anabaptist Perspectives and What We’ve Learned
Our founders, Reagan and Jaran, tell the story of Anabaptist Perspectives from their perspective. Why they started, humor and encouragement along the way, and what keeps them excited five years in.
As they say in the episode, we are especially grateful for all of you who have sustained this ministry with your gifts.

Thu, 09 Jun 2022 - 33min - 181 - Monks, Nuns and the Church
We should learn from monks and nuns. Monastics were responsible for the revival of agriculture, in addition to schools, libraries, and hospitals. These works of service accompanied their focus on the interior life and recovering personal wholeness. Stephen reminds us of the origins of monasticism in the New Testament (1 Corinthians 7 and 1 Timothy 5:9-12), and highlights the possibility that those who served a celibate calling helped bring the rest of the church back closer to God’s original design for sexuality.

Thu, 02 Jun 2022 - 17min - 180 - The Feminine Cloud of Witnesses
Kristi Mast highlights women, past and present, who have inspired her. As the conversation progresses, she highlights the power of reading scripture congregationally. Then she offers a brief review of egalitarian and complementarian ideologies in contemporary Christianity. Kristi encourages women to see themselves first as disciples, rather than any other identity. She calls all of us to keep coming back to the text of the New Testament as we navigate issues around the roles of men and women in the church.

Thu, 12 May 2022 - 17min - 177 - Our Experience among the Homeless
What did a team of four students learn when they spent several days (and nights) on the streets of Dallas? Their goal was to hear from people experiencing homelessness and get a small taste of that Homelessness directly affects about 580,000 Americans, but most of us don’t encounter these individuals face to face. Our guests in this episode temporarily surrendered their comfort and ease to live among those who have been less fortunate.

Thu, 28 Apr 2022 - 17min - 175 - How Should We Then Money?
It is good to work and to be invested in our work. Distributism fits well with traditional Anabaptist values, even though it has largely been articulated by Catholic thinkers. Stephen Russell urges us to “look at distributism and see how it fits with what we have traditionally tried to do, and learn from it”. These themes include valuing craftsmanship, family businesses, and widespread ownership of the tools and infrastructure needed for business.

“Men always work harder and more readily when they work on that which belongs to them; nay, they learn to love the very soil that yields in response to the labor of their hands, not only food to eat, but an abundance of good things for themselves and those that are dear to them. That such a spirit of willing labor would add to the produce of the earth and to the wealth of the community is self evident.”
Pope Prius XI’s statement on subsidiarity
“Just as it is gravely wrong to take from individuals what they can accomplish by their own initiative and industry and give it to the community, so also it is an injustice and at the same time a grave evil and disturbance of right order to assign to a greater and higher association what lesser and subordinate organizations can do. For every social activity ought of its very nature to furnish help to the members of the body social, and never destroy and absorb them.

Thu, 21 Apr 2022 - 26min - 174 - Usury and the Historic Church
What does Scripture have to say about loaning money at interest? Do Old Testament prohibitions apply to us? How does collecting interest fit with working with our own hands and being productive?
Stephen Russell gives us glimpses into how the church has thought about this over the last two millenia, and how Christian thinking changed as economic systems changed. Stephen calls us to see God’s heart as revealed in the Old Testament year of Jubilee.

Thu, 07 Apr 2022 - 17min - 172 - Money in the Early Anabaptist Movement
Money has rarely been far removed from the biblical narratives or major conversations of the church since the New Testament. Between the close of the New Testament and the protestant reformation, the church had much to say about usury. Stephen Russell, a student of history, orients us to the church’s premodern stance on usury.

Transcript
It’s time for a quick update on the Anabaptist Perspectives
mission and impact as well as our current needs. Over the last 4 years we have
been privileged to release over 140 episodes. Right now things are a bit quiet
on our channels, as we are hard at work behind the scenes
Next spring, we will roll out Season 4. Thanks to generous
donors we were able to upgrade our filming and recording gear.
We have also developed our ability to do high quality remote
interviews—a huge step up from the Zoom calls we have used in the past.
Its been humbling to see how some of our episodes have been
the right thing at the right time for some people. For example Jeff writes from
England:
“I hope
you're not closing down this YouTube channel though. As I have learnt so much
and have been challenged in my faith and walk in Christ. I now consider myself
to be an Anabaptist Kingdom Christian..... I believe that God will do something
huge here in the South East of England where I live as result of the flame
that's been kindled in my heart to see the Lord do something really radical as
a result of the teaching I have received from some of amazing people
that have interviewed here!”
Thanks for the encouragement Jeff! We wish you and your
region God’s blessing.
Back in 2017 when Reagan and I started this channel we
defined two objectives:
1. To describe and defend Anabaptist
theology and biblical elements of contemporary Anabaptist lifestyle.
2. To promote biblical discussions among
Anabaptist people about social and cultural issue while providing non-Anabaptist
people with ways to think about social and cultural issues that differ from the
dominant media and news sources.
While we might say it a bit differently 4 years later, that
vision still undergirds Anabaptist Perspectives. If anything we are reaffirming
and strengthening our commitment to depth and integrity in our conversations on
theology, culture, and lifestyle. We seek to inspire thoughtful, faithful
living.
From day one we have focused on “accessible online media.”
We started with YouTube, Facebook, and a podcast. We knew this was where the
media needed to be for our generation.
Since then, we have added a Telegram and CloudVeil group and
Instagram
We have also developed our own blog called “Essays for King
Jesus”, which has its own Telegram/CloudVeil group and a separate podcast
featuring audio recordings.
As we look forward to 2022 and the coming years, personnel
are key to maximize the many opportunities in front of us. We have gathered a
great team, and would love for them to be able to spend more consistent time
driving these projects forward. To do that we need to extend our financial
support base.
From the beginning we have been supported by those who share
our vision. We are very grateful to all of you who support us with monthly
financial contributions or periodic donations. This organization exists because
of you. Currently we have about 75 monthly partners. For Anabaptist
Perspectives to be continue to grow, we need many more monthly partners.
As a Monthly partner you will have access regular bonus
content, in addition to our normal episodes, as well as our partner exclusive

questions.
