For this special episode, I sifted through hundreds of songs I felt fell into the “rare” category as most are unknown or ultra-rare 7” releases or as I call them,  Rare Reggae Gems. Music left behind in the dust of time but not forgotten.  Part of the fun in discovering these artists becomes, who were they and where’d they go?  For many, these questions go unanswered which makes for an intriguing listen - the mystery of the many who came, recorded and vanished.

Harkening back to that golden-era of second-wave ska launched by The Specials, Jerry Dammers, and his 2-Tone label sparked off a short, but incredible run of what have now become classic ska tunes from bands like The Beat, Madness, Selector, and many more.

For Part Two I’ll be looking at how Studio One regained the crown after losing some of their cache and hitmaking ability to Duke Reid’s Treasure Isle and his rocksteady output by shifting gears, embracing Rasta and the evolving roots reggae style, toasting, rub-a-dub, dub and rockers ushering in the new generation of future icons: Dennis Brown, Burning Spear, Prince Jazzbo, Dillinger, Willi Williams and more.

Every transformation of music in Jamaica from 50s R&B & Mento, Ska to Rocksteady, Roots to Rockers, Dancehall to Digital - Studio One has been one of the driving forces of music.  Hour one, part one ( of a three-part series), looks at the origins of Coxsone Dodd and Studio one beginning with his Downbeat Soundsystem in 1954, to his first release in 1959 up until 1969.

Today we take a trip back in time to the 60s and 70s, re-discovering an engineer turned producer that has his fingers on many classic tracks and worked with legends. This week’s featured artist King Toppa maintains the tradition of classic dancehall with a fresh eye and sound, IRIE’s Track Of The Week brings back Belgium-based Arky Stach alongside Suga Plum for a brand new release. The trinity of Deemas J, Jago & Zen Lewis also has their new single ”That Sound”. The Hip-Hop Throwback delivers a European B-Boy mix of a classic Beastie Boys track bookended by Dr. Octagon his fiery jam. Taking us out are two new tracks from Sam Binga and Breakage to jack the energy up to a solid 174BPM
