Mad Mumzie shares stories and tips on living a mining lifestyle in Australia. As a dump truck operator for over 12 years, she wants you to know what it's really like. How to get in, how to thrive and survive in the mining industry-especially as a woman, how to make the most of your time working long hours, shift work and away from home. Interview style and audio blog episodes in a fun way help to shed light on a mysterious mining lifestyle to many.
- 96 - 96 Mining Job Interview Questions - MM's Daughter's experience
Job interviews can be a nerve-wracking experience, filled with anticipation and uncertainty. In this episode, we delve into the rollercoaster ride of Mad Mumzie’s daughter’s phone interview. We explore the tricky interview questions that threw her off and how she got through them.
The interview kicks off with a seemingly straightforward question: "What does safety mean to you?" This question, though simple, sets the tone for the rest of the interview. It's a reminder that interviewers are not just looking for technical skills, but also for insight into a candidate's values and mindset.
So, did she get the job? You'll have to listen to the full episode to find out. But regardless of the outcome, her story is a powerful reminder that interviews are not just about answering questions correctly. They're about showcasing who you are, how you think, and how you handle challenges.

Come with Mad Mumzie as she goes for a mine dust lung disease check up, including chest Xray. What is involved? What did she do wrong along the way, and what you need to know for your check-ups. Why have one? Mine dust lung diseases (MDLD) are occupational lung disorders that result from prolonged exposure to high concentrations of respirable dust. Mon, 11 Nov 2019 - 1h 02min - 62 - 62 Mackay Mayor and Denmark TV show
Why did they ask Mad Mumzie? What does Mackay's Mayor think about it? Strange going to Mackay Council Headquarters with a camera crew and saying “I'm here to see the Mayor.”
A random Facebook message changed everything, was it legit? Research and a chat with a TV Director in Denmark was the beginning of an epic 2 day adventure… The programme is similar to our ABC’s Foreign Correspondent. I was to speak about how mining affects our country and our town as they share a story about the draught here in Oz. What might be causing it?
In Denmark they have no mining, so they can’t relate to why we keep doing it. Jakob, the Director did 1 year in Townsville and 3 in Brisvegas doing his Journo degree years ago, so he understands our culture. I wouldn’t have agreed if it was another “your killing the reef, anti Adani” perspective. I don’t need that target on my back and they would not be open to absorb my thoughts.
A chat on the phone to meet the Director and find out their why and why me, helped me decide. They didn’t want just people in suits. Were looking for down to earth Aussies, and somehow they came across me. After 30 hours travel and plane delays they arrived in Mackay. They followed me with a video camera for 2 days. Starting with me interviewing the Mackay Mayor for my Beers With a Miner podcast in his office. No pressure! Greg was so passionate about our area and was open and welcoming to our foreign guests. Strange going to Mackay Council Headquarters with a camera crew and saying “Im here to see the Mayor.”

Sat, 22 Jun 2019 - 48min - 56 - Stop Adani Convoy v Go Galilee Basin Rally
Passionate speakers share their thoughts on The "Stop Adani convoy" with Bob Browne leading the charge all the way from Hobart! Coming into our region to voice their opinion on the Carmichael coal mine, and the locals aren’t happy. Why was it on? Why were we there? 80% of the crowd put up their hands when asked if it was their first rally too? It was time to stand up for our region. The convoy drove past dirty brown coal mines and power stations in Vic and NSW to protest against the cleanest coal in the world!
After my free sausage MM interviewed Mackay Mayor Greg Williamson, Federal member for Dawson George Christensen and the MC for the event, RIN Director and rally virgin himself Mick Crowe. They all spoke of their pride in how many peeps came out to show support for our industry.
In the distance I could see red flags blowing as the stop Adani Convoy prepared to leave. Interesting time to be on the Peak Downs Highway! Will they get fuel? Many hoped not.

Sat, 04 May 2019 - 1h 13min - 55 - 55 Next of Kin or Social Media ?
We lost yet another beloved miner recently which spurred me to share these thoughts with you. Firstly, I want to send love and angels to family, friends and work mates of all those involved.
News travels fast when a serious incident occurs at one of our mine sites. Someone close to me was immediately affected so I knew quickly. Wanting to learn more I went to social media. Local groups had not yet picked up on it, or perhaps-wisely-chosen not to share just yet?
I was tagged in a post on a tv channel’s page that had chosen to share the as yet vague details. Initially incorrect news was spread. Many people were panicked and trying to find out the facts. Comment threads were horrifying me.
One lady shared how worried she was as her partner worked there and advice was pouring in. Yes, she had already contacted site to learn more, but they could not release anything. They were right in the middle of dealing with it all. Can you imagine? Workforce safety and communication, helicopters, police, ambulance, media and family members are all part of the initial responses with much more to follow.
Another told her if she was next of kin and had not heard anything, her partner was ok, and she should stop being so dramatic! This is when the memories of Big T’s death onsite came back to me.

Mon, 01 Jan 2018 - 42min - 41 - 41: My Dad is A FIFO Dad author Jo Emery
After having to do a “tuck and roll” drop off at the airport, Steve and Jo Emery's 3 kids were devastated. They didn’t get to say a proper goodbye-not even a trip to Maccas helped!
That night Jo sat in bed with a glass of wine and wrote the "My Dad Is A FIFO Dad" book. Her daughter cried when she read it the next day. "That’s about me and Dad."
But where does Dad go when he gets on the plane? This popular, well illustrated book and optional activity cards help many families across Australia and the world who experience separation because of FIFO/DIDO work. The aim of the story is to encourage an "I'm OK when Dad's away" mindset in children.
Listen in to find out if author Jo Emery and the kids ever took her husband Steve back to the airport! How do they cope with him being away for 3 weeks at a time, and how can we help any kids understand that the “away” parent still loves them, and will be coming home again soon.

Wed, 08 Jun 2016 - 24min - 9 - 009 Real Miners
I am a miner, but am I a Real Miner? My partner is a "Real Miner." Just ask him, he will tell you! I thought we were all real miners, what is the difference? You work in a mine, you’re a real miner, right? The Oxford Dictionary describes a miner as anyone who works in a mine. There is no definition for a "Real Miner." When I met my partner, an underground miner, he started calling me a Gravel Scratcher. I am a miner, but am I a real miner? In my view we are all real miners, working long hours away from family and friends, in dangerous conditions with uncertain times ahead. It doesn’t matter who does what or what we call each other, but not everyone agrees!
