- 939 - Speaking on Business: Ballet West - Nutcracker
This is Derek Miller Speaking on Business. Ballet West is the ninth largest professional ballet company in the country and is the second-largest performing arts organization in Utah with an international reputation for artistic excellence since its founding in 1963. Executive Director Michael Scolamiero joins us with more. Michael Scolamiero: Ballet West is home to America’s first Nutcracker, which all started when our founder, Willam Christensen, choreographed the first full-length version of The Nutcracker in the United States in 1944. This year, we are celebrating 80 years of The Nutcracker, which has become officially known as a Living Historic Landmark by the state of Utah, the first such designation of its kind in the country. We are the only company that presents this version in the United States, which Christensen first created for the San Francisco Ballet during the height of WWII to provide family entertainment to audiences during a difficult time in the world. It was ideal because of the vast number of children used in the production, when so many able-bodied dancers were enlisted in the military. Thanks to Christensen, The Nutcracker has become synonymous with the holiday tradition and has become a major revenue stream for ballet companies around the world. Derek Miller: For over 60 years, Ballet West has expanded its footprint in our community through innovative performances and preeminent training in dance. Thu, 14 Nov 2024 - 01min - 938 - Speaking on Business: Kinect Capital
This is Derek Miller, Speaking on Business. Kinect Capital’s mission is to empower emerging and diverse entrepreneurs in creating sustainable companies that bring high-quality jobs and new economic opportunities in under-served regions of the United States. Here with more is Board Member Matt Warnock. Matt Warnock: Utah’s tech scene is red hot — but starting a company is hard. Most startups fail, often because they lack experience, capital, or both. At Kinect Capital, we help founders put both experience and capital in their corner. Founded in 1983, Kinect Capital is the world’s oldest and most successful nonprofit venture accelerator. Our alumni include Ancestry dot com, Myriad Genetics, and over a thousand others. We pair promising startups with a multidisciplinary team of experienced volunteers, helping them attract capital from smart investors. Over 60 percent of our alumni raise capital, and 80 percent are still in business 10 years later. Unlike many accelerators, we don’t move our startups to Silicon Valley or other places — we’ve been bringing capital to local communities right here in Utah for over 40 years! At Kinect Capital, we help founders start right, raise capital, and change the world. We're building the future, one startup at a time. Derek Miller: Kinect Capital believes that diversity brings better connections and better returns. This thriving community of entrepreneurs, mentors, and capital sources extends beyond tech, adding value and creating unexpected connections across many industries. This means that we, as individuals, have the power to make a real difference in the quality of the air we breathe. Through simple actions such as reducing idling, taking public transit, trip-chaining, walking or biking, and more, we contribute to the health, economic prosperity, and well-being of the communities in which we live. Derek Miller: UCAIR knows that even the smallest actions can spark bigger movement—leading to cleaner air, healthier communities, a stronger economy, and a better quality of life for everyone. General Manager Bryan Hill shares more. Thu, 05 Sep 2024 - 01min - 812 - Speaking on Business: Chanshare Farms Bermudagrass
This is Derek Miller, Speaking on Business. Water is a precious natural resource and how we manage it today will impact nearly every aspect of our future. One way we can protect our water supply is through water wise landscaping. Eric Marble from Chanshare Farms joins us with more. Eric Marble: In Utah, water conservation is not a request, but a necessity. This is why, Chanshare Farms spent the last three years working with researchers from Brigham Young University, Utah State University, as well as other industry leaders, to delist Triploid Hybrid Bermudagrass from the Noxious Weeds List. While common Bermudagrass is aggressive and remains prohibited due to its highly invasive nature, Triploid Hybrid Bermudagrass is a less invasive and an excellent water-saving alternative to Bluegrass in Northern Utah. Triploid Hybrid Bermudagrass does not grow from seed, which is inert, and it has several substantial benefits, including: It requires 50 percent less water than Bluegrass; It’s softer, and needs less mowing, fertilizing and maintenance; and, It’s cold tolerant to our frigid winter temperatures. Ultimately, Triploid Hybrid Bermudagrass will improve our parks, sports fields, golf courses, residential landscapes dramatically. This is a win for Utah, and a win for Chanshare Farms and our efforts to preserve green space while conserving water. Derek Miller: We can all do our part when it comes to water conservation and stewardship. If you’re interested in learning more about Triploid Hybrid Bermudagrass, contact Chanshare Farms today. We started PACS because we felt there was a better way to provide quality care in the post-acute health care sector. And as we execute on our mission, we are making a tremendous difference in the lives of the most vulnerable population in our country. We’ve taken decades of hands-on experience in post-acute care and translated that into a model that greatly reduces administrative burdens for our leadership teams; we do the heavy lifting on the business side, which gives our local teams more time to focus on the care, well-being, and quality of life of their patients and their employees. PACS elevates the delivery of local health care by providing technological and human resources, tools, and guidance, and empowering facility leaders and their teams to make local decisions based on patient needs. It’s a simple philosophy that healthcare is local, and the focus on care is our top priority. DEREK MILLER: Utah is a leader in healthcare services and technology. Since 2005, Caspian Agency has been assisting select, purpose-driven organizations with creating top-tier events that promote both the bottom line and social impact. Founder Heather Mason joins us with more. HEATHER MASON: Events are critical to business success. Covid highlighted this importance when live meetings stopped, which is why the event industry has not only recovered but it’s thriving. Yet, many businesses still lack strategic planning for events which can waste money and staff time. At Caspian Agency, we help companies develop long-term event strategies. We ask where an event or an event series will be in 2-3 years and then we create a business plan accordingly. We also assess the event value, not its budget, to enable better resource allocation. This ensures that every dime spent yields a multiple return and we also analyze staff time to free them up. We’ve produced events for the Rockefeller Foundation, Hewlett Foundation, Ford Foundation and others around the country and around the world. We want every event to deliver meaningful business value, and we’re thrilled to bring our services to Utah. Find out more at CaspianAgency.com. Tue, 02 Apr 2024 - 01min - 771 - Speaking on Business: Make-A-Wish Utah
This is Derek Miller, Speaking on Business. Make-A-Wish Utah is on a mission to spread the life-changing power of hope to children battling critical illnesses — replacing fear with confidence, sadness with joy and anxiety with optimism. President & CEO Daniel Dudley joins us with more. Daniel Dudley: Make-A-Wish was born, fittingly, because of the wish of a child. On April 29th, 1980, 7-year-old Chris, who’d been diagnosed with leukemia, decided his wish was to be a police officer. Volunteers in his community made his wish a reality. After witnessing the impact the wish had on Chris, a global movement was created. Since then, Make-A-Wish Utah has granted over 4,500 wishes for Utah children battling critical illnesses. Through the power of a wish, children can be anything they want, meet anyone they choose, or go anywhere they dream of. Research shows children who have wishes granted can build the physical and emotional strength they need to fight a critical illness. Of course, wishes do not come true by chance — wishes happen because community members choose to make them possible. Learn how you can help at wish.org/utah. Derek Miller: Whether you’re a small donor or a large corporation, you have the power to make a wish come true. Visit the Make-A-Wish website to help them achieve their goal of reaching every eligible child in Utah. I’m Derek Miller with the Salt Lake Chamber, Speaking on Business. Originally aired 4/1/24

CEO Preston Cochrane of The Other Side Village shares further details. Preston Cochrane: Since 2015, The Other Side Academy has been aiding individuals with long histories of criminal behavior and addiction. Situated at 1850 West Indiana Avenue in Salt Lake City, the Village will offer deeply affordable housing for over 500 residents. Phase one, slated to open later this year, will introduce cottage style homes, including unique AirBnB-style nightly rentals, fostering job opportunities and revenue generation. The Other Side Village emphasizes community, accountability, and self-reliance. Wed, 21 Feb 2024 - 01min - 751 - Speaking on Business: Wasatch Security Awareness
This is Derek Miller, Speaking on Business. According to Verizon’s 2023 Data Breach Investigations Report, 74 percent of all security breaches include a human element. That’s why Wasatch Security Awareness was created — to provide cybersecurity training to businesses and their employees. Founder Matt Groves joins us with more. Matt Groves: Your company’s employees are both the biggest target and the best defense against a cyber attack. At Wasatch Security Awareness, we are determined to educate your end users to become smarter than the digital threats they will inevitably face. When we work with businesses, we use a simple training process to ensure each organization gets the personalized education they need. First, we collaborate with management to create a human intelligence training plan. We then test employees with a customized “spear phishing” email that mimics techniques used by cybercriminals. Based on the test’s results, Wasatch Security Awareness provides customized training to help businesses become more secure. On average, 24 percent of employees click a link inside their first spear fishing test, and 19 percent enter a username and password. But with training and practice, we can help your employees be your company’s first defense against cybercriminals. Derek Miller: Whether you’re a small, local business or a large corporation, your employees can benefit from cybersecurity training. Visit the Wasatch Security Awareness website for more information.
