Do you take accents in movies for granted? Dialect coaching is a whole career, and I get to talk to William Conacher about his 28 years of experience, including coaching the idiolects of real people. Actors he has coached to recreate specific people's voices include: 4 separate Princess Dianas, Rami Malek in Bohemian Rhapsody, and now Cillian Murphy for J. Robert Oppenheimer.

The real Oppenheimer had a privileged education in New York City and spoke with an accent known as Mid-Atlantic (somewhere between British and American accents). That accent has less R coloring (less pronunciation of Rs) more T pronunciation, particular words that marked the accent.

Besides that, specific words can mark an accent, or an idiolect. Oppeneimer always said 'nuclear' with a Y (like my grandmother)

You can hear how William's process has been formed over many years. And having known Cillian Murphy for over 20 years, it's even difficult for William to describe his process, because once you're close with someone, there are so many shortcuts to remind them, even when he wasn't allowed to be on set with Cillian.

Irina is interested in studying voice quality and intonation scientifically to understand the physical aspects involved in accents.

Daniel and I first met in Hadar's Teacher's group a few years ago, and now we both live in Mexico. He actually went through her Accent Makeover course and decided to continue on the path!

Listen to Felippe's first live coaching session.

He knew he had a problem, but couldn't hear exactly what it was, so he came to me.

Felippe came with 2 words in mind, 'world' and 'favorited', and added a third, 'throughout'.

Felippe was having trouble with his consonant clusters. His tongue had a hard time transitioning from the American R, to the dark L, to the D sound quickly and accurately.

We work on a variety of consonant clusters that can be tricky.

You have to coordinate your tongue, teeth, lips, jaw, and vocal folds!

We also worked on voicing sounds and getting an explosive amount of air out.

/n/ vs /ŋ/

Lip rounding sabotaging some sounds.

Maybe it's not Felippe, but it's just English that's difficult!

I review a list of other words for Feilppe to pay attention to, like 'virtual', and 'software'.

I teach Felippe a simple and effective technique called 'rebracketing', which helps with connected speech in English!

-ED and -S endings on words are common AND tricky! Repetition and drilling these words is key, and I have a resource for you that will make life easier!

Filippe slows down and gets control of what he's saying and knows exactly what he's supposed to do.

He also thought about the most impactful words for him, as opposed to the most frequent words in all of English.

I ask 'what?' all the time, but by the time they answer, I've actually pieced it together. It's not a problem with my ear, but how I process (or don't) what I'm hearing!

It's almost like I have dyslexia of the ears, but I'm hyper focused on what people are saying and how they say it. I guess it made me a better accent coach in a way!

In honor of Michelle Yeoh's 2023 Oscar for Best Actress (the first time it has been won by an Asian), I want to share with you how I listen to people's individual speech patters, or idiolects.

Specifically, I point out pronunciation or articulation differences between how Michelle Yeoh and I speak.

I show you how to listen and notice differences in your jaw, tongue, and lips when producing vowels, voicing using your vocal folds, Rs in different accents in English, Regular Ls vs Dark Ls, how much air comes out in your plosive sounds (P, T, and K), syllable stress, linking sounds together, and how some consonants blend together or might form something new.

There are two other things that aren't related to pronunciation that we can notice in Michelle Yeoh if we listen for them: her placement (head voice) and her oral posture.

You're probably aware of the accent bias that snuck into the face recognition software. It wasn't that the AI was racist, it merely exposed that humans are. I think of the Hollywood language bias and accent discrimination much the same. Hollywood has biases, and we the audience have been affected by it.

The Oscars are almost here for 2023, and I really think Michele Yeoh deserves to win. And I love that her natural, authentic accent has been accepted and used since at least 2017 when she played a starship captain on Star Trek: Discovery.

Unless you're already a Sci-Fi fan, or a 'Trekkie', you'll learn a few facts about a show I grew up on as well.

In this special episode, I talk about the Hollywood language bias, analyze 2 features of Michele Yeoh's idiolect (individual accent), and express our hopes for the future.

These are 4 mistakes you might be making when you link your words in Connected Speech.

It may be because the sound is difficult to articulate because it isn't in your first language.

Or perhaps it is, but it's made differently.

Or perhaps it is, but how we spell things and how we say things can be different.

Or perhaps it is, but you might be hearing a reduced form of the word.

If you want to link your NGs, THs, Rs, or final Ss (orfen a Z sound) better, listen to this episode!

But don't take my word for it... in this episode you'll hear movie clips to represent each of the 4 mistakes in linking.

Linking is a very common way to Connect your Speech in English!

It's more difficult than Assimilating or Gliding because now we're going from a consonant to a vowel!

Even though some people confuse the term Linking with Connected Speech, Linking is a TYPE of Connected Speech that we'll review here. We define and review the differences between Connected Speech and Linking, specifically.

I break down and practice 3 examples of basic linking and go back to our sample sentence about breakfast to example it for instances of linking in this episode.

In the next episode, we'll discuss 4 Common Mistakes made in Linking.

Assimilation is the easiest (yet rarest) of the 4 forms of Connected Speech!

Connected speech has evolved in English, and by rebracketing our words, we can connect our speech.

I demonstrate how assimilation works using 3 consonant examples at the ends and beginnings of words, then a full normal sentence talking about breakfast.

I mention some things to watch out for, especially -S and -ED endings in English because the spelling in English isn't transparent to pronunciation.

In fact, I have put together a training resource for you to know how to know which -S and -ED endings you should say to make your connected speech better!

Vowels are much more difficult, and we will review them in the next episode about Gliding in Connected Speech!

Here are 2 example groups where a change in syllable stress DOES equal a change in the language.

Sometimes stressing a different syllable tells us the part of speech the word is. For instance, OBject and obJECT have different grammatical functions. The first pattern is the noun, and the second signifies the verb form.

Other times, stressing a different syllable actually makes it a different word. For example, CONtest is 'a race, conflict, or other competition between rivals, as for a prize.' However, to conTEST something means 'to argue against; or dispute'. Here, there is also a change in grammar, but the words have very different meanings.

I don't have to tell you how effective it is to have the RIGHT training materials! I spent hours looking online and I couldn't find the right ones to teach with. So, I did the research and I made my own accent training materials!

Get great syllable stress immediately by drilling these top 200+ words to practice syllable stress, broken into 8 patterns.

Plus, there are 2 pages of BONUS words illustrating what to watch out for- syllable stress that DOESN'T follow those patterns!

Do you ever hear the same word two different ways, with different numbers of syllables? For example, some people say 'different' with 3 syllables, and others with only 2. What's going on here? Language is always changing, and when you have a center syllable with schwa, they are dropping out of people's speech these days. So, both ways are correct.

Not only that, but when we think about variations in how we speak, our different accents in English can also sometimes produce the same word with the same number of syllables, but we might stress a different syllable. For example, the word 'research' can be stressed on the first OR second syllable! Again, both are correct.

In both of these, it's a choice, and that choice doesn't impact the grammar of the word or its meaning!
