- 132 - CT114 – 😭 End of the Road! 😭 | **FINAL EPISODE** | Lessons Learned | Listener Statistics | Words of “Wisdom” | Farewell from Andrew & Eli
Well, “all good things must come to an end,” as they say. (Even though this isn’t actually true.) It has been our singular privilege and joy to bring you CaucasTalk for the last 4+ years, and we are struck to the heart to say goodbye. Our life situations have made it such that a) we are no longer both in the North Caucasus, and b) we are therefore no longer recording in-person. We feel it is time to move on as much as it grieves us. We want to say THANK YOU to our wonderful listeners, who have honored, encouraged, and buoyed us up along the way; to our faithful Patreon supporters who have literally made this all possible; and most of all to our North Caucasus friends who, even as guests on our podcasts, have really been hosts to us and our families for several wonderful years living in their midst. Each one of you has made us feel welcome. We have cherished coming to know you, your families, and your cultures better. We consider it an honor to have represented you in some small way to the wider world. We hope earnestly to have left a positive legacy in our short tenure and that others will carry on, in their own ways, the important work of sharing positive news from the North Caucasus.
All episodes will remain available as far as we are able, in perpetuity at: www.caucastalk.com

After three years of hanging in the wings just listening to CaucasTalk, Abdurahman finally steps up to the mic to represent his beautiful Dagestani people group, the Aghuls. (Thanks to some arm-twisting from Andrew 🙂 The Aghuls hail from the southern midlands of Dagestan and, like many people groups, they lack strong resources for their language. Abdurahman became convicted of this fact and has set out to be an advocate and voice for his people and language. As we so often find with guests, his manor is disarming, and love for homeland inspiring.

Matt Johnson tells us today, not only of his several and often hair-raising ascents of Mt. Elbrus one many of the six routes—including lightning storms, crevasses, and a mountain rescue—but much more about his love for the local culture, and especially a remote valley on the northwest side of the mountain. In the last year he has founded the Elbrus Alpine Project “to partner with the valley’s clans to build, from the ground up, a tourism and climbing economy” that foregrounds the desires and wellness of the local culture and economy.

If there’s one topic that gets the blood stirring of the today’s young folk, it’s old age! Or… not. Actually, the fact that’s funny tells us in the West a whole lot about our own cultural views on this very important topic. And would you believe there are places in the world where this topic actually DOES garner interest and esteem from all ages? That’s right: the North Caucasus. Springboarding off of our recent episode on retirement in the North Caucasus (Ep. 105 – http://caucastalk.com/epsiode105), we explore the wider issue of aging. Not only are the Caucasus globally renowned for their high density of centenarians (people over 100), but the reasons for a preponderance of old age are fascinating, if not ultimately speculative. One thing is sure: North Caucasus cultures love their old folks. We hope at the end of today’s episode you will, too!

Education is a deeply-held value embedded in families and throughout the North Caucasus. From early childhood through the university years, high levels of academic achievement are considered “normal,” according to our guest today. Madina from Ingushetia shares about her personal experience growing up as a student, and now as a top English tutor in Ingushetia. As always, pride for the region, deep connection to history, and a warm welcome for visitors shines out. But we also hear about the real need of good education in today’s competitive global environment.

The Dargin people inhabit mainly the middle latitudes of Dagestan, from the foothills up into the mountains. As our knowledgeable and articulate guest today, Saida, shares with us, the word “Dargin” means “inside,” as in deep in the mountains, and that is where this people can be found. Their traditions range and vary from embroidery to armory, and even include an amazing ancient practice of sharing children among families. Possibly the most winsome part of this interview is how Saida’s own heart has been captured by her homeland, even as a local. She shares her hope of someday living in the rarefied air of mountain life. It’s a pleasure and privilege today to hear from yet one more North Caucasus people in their own words!

And yes, for those of you wondering (like Andrew), the word “Lezginka” refers not only to the Caucasus-wide national dance, but actually is the term for female members of the Lezgin nation. Louisa hails from the ancient and venerable city of Derbent and gives us wonderful insights about famous Lezgins from history, handicrafts, unique aspects of geography, and a flavor for who Lezgins are. We even got her to sing a snippet of a Lezgin folk song! The act of dining out in the North Caucasus brings with it a whole host of quirks, habits, and cultural expectations that may be every bit as unfamiliar as the food. Join us as we “dig in” in a different sense and discover yet again gems of culture, people, and history hidden in plain sight—even on the plate right in front of you.

When you hear the word “retirement,” what comes to mind? Collecting shells on a beach? Sitting with an armload of grandkids? To some it means a life of independence facilitated through professional care. For others, it’s receiving with honor the support of children and family. Whatever the vision, our care for the elderly in our communities says a lot about our values and culture. Today we share some of what we have learned about retirement practices in the North Caucasus and how they contrasts—sometimes radically—from ideas in the West.

How to Live to Be 100, by Sula BenetNYTimes Review of BenetTue, 06 Jul 2021 - 55min - 118 - CT101 – Tabasaran: In Their Own Words! | World’s Most Complex Language | Multilingualism | Carpet making
Without a doubt, our most popular series has been “In Their Own Words,” in which we give you our listeners a chance to hear from the peoples of the North Caucasus directly. Not long ago we decided to try for one interview with every one of the 34 official languages of Dagestan—and some say there are more. Today we are privileged to meet Marat of the Tabasaran nation. Situated in southern Dagestan, the Tabasaran boast not a growing population, but they are also recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as possessing the most complex grammar in the world. This is no joke… but have a listen to learn details about that and much more unique to the Tabasaran!
Notes
In this interview our guest makes several citations about Tabasaran grammar. We want to acknowledge that various sorts of numerical tallies of languages are interesting and popular, but not undisputed. An even-handed treatment of the subject can be found here: scholar.harvard.edu/files/mpolinsky/files/DaghCaseHoax.pdf?m=1360038984Tue, 29 Jun 2021 - 57min - 117 - CT100 – Business Accelerator IARD in Dagestan: Interview with Vali | Community Investment Funds | Lak Nation | Village Trash Clean-Up

Wed, 16 Jun 2021 - 1h 03min - 116 - CT99 – Kaitag: In Their Own Words | Endangered Languages | Dargwa Dialects of Dagestan | Achieving International Recognition of a Language
A young man of only 20 years, Magomed is already making lasting change for his minority Dagestani language group, the Kaitag. Most people have never heard of the 20,000 speakers of Kaitag, and yet Magomed is advocating on the international stage to get his language officially recognized. Possibly most instructive is the way Magomed has approached his involvement: he simply asked, What can I do for my people? Without any professional training in linguistics, he has created a translation and transliteration website just for Caucasus languages. If you’re needing a little inspiration for how one person can make a difference, welcome to today’s interview.

“Every time a language dies, it’s like someone just dropped a bomb on the Louvre.” The treasures contained in a human language cannot be overestimated, according to Dr. Daniel Wilson, linguist and language technology pioneer. A research fellow at the University of the Free State, South Africa, and Moscow resident, Daniel has been living in Russia on invitation from the Academy of Sciences to research on of the smallest language groups in Dagestan, the Tsez (also known as Didoi)—and a possible new language group related to them, the Sagada. Daniel’s appreciation for language and the communities they represent is palpable and contagious. We also don’t mind how he’s able to bring linguistic jargon down to street level for us.

Enjoy!
Culture: What Is It?
Culture may be one of the most overused words in the English language. It can describe everything, or nothing. Today we tackle this unruly term and take on an even more bodacious question: What is culture in the North Caucasus?
Of course this could take a lifetime to answer. That’s why today’s episode is so long. No, actually, it’s long because today we conduct our very first CaucasTalk interview ever! And is it ever juicy. We invite you meet Khalid, our well-spoken, English-speaking Karachay friend from our university. Guided by Andrew’s steady questions and interrupted by Eli’s unhelpful interjections, Khalid shares eloquently about key features of North Caucasus culture as he sees it.
We’d love your feed back! Write and tell us what you think at podcast@caucastalk.com.

Tourism in the North Caucasus, Part 2
We’re jumping right back into our fly-by of the NC region where we left off last time. Having grazed the surface of Dagestan, Chechnya, and Ingushetia, we today continue westward into Ossetia, Kabardino-Balkaria, Karachay-Cherkessia, and Adygheya—with a brief stop off in our fair region, the lovely, the bubbly KMV, “Kavkaz Mineralnye Vody”/Caucasus Mineral Waters region.
ERRATA:
For those of you who listened to Episode 2 in the early days of its release, first of all kudos to you. But secondly, our apologies—there was a wee gaff. The early release included both parts 1 and 2 in a single release, rather than in two, as it should have been and now is. That means that if you heard all of the first Episode 2 (the 40 minute version), you’ve heard the bulk of Episode 3. But it also means you’ve missed the new ending to the freshly uploaded, shorter Episode 2 (the 23 minute version) which includes a thrilling Tourism Tip.
So, first off, our apologies! We are learning, and it’s definitely on a curve. (But everyday we are getting better and better. . .) Second, our advice: go back to Episode 2, hop in around minute 18:07 and catch the revised ending and said Tourism Tip. It’s a great little nugget. Thanks for hanging in there with us!Tue, 01 Aug 2017 - 27min - 108 - CT2 – Tourism in the North Caucasus, Part 1

Was it Bill Cosby who said that kids say the darndest things? This has always been true, and as it is our goal to give our listeners the most unfiltered view of the North Caucasus, what could be better, we thought, than hearing from our own children? Rather than sick all eight of them on you at once, today we interview each of our oldest (and most articulate) offspring. You will hear from their perspective a bit of what life is like in the Caucasus. Of course we think they’re cute, but we’re also pretty sure you’ll agree.Wed, 16 Dec 2020 - 32min - 100 - CT88 – Driving in the North Caucasus | “The Circles of Stress” | Bukhankas | Leaning on Local Friends
Allow us to take you for a ride today—literally. As of the last month, both your CaucasTalk hosts have become proud car owners. This means we have gained first-hand driving experience in the North Caucasus. And this is no small thing. In fact, it’s incredible. We both feel extremely awesome and are loving the freedom of the road and the wind blowing through our hair. But the road to driving success was a tortuous one. Today we regale you with tales from our crazy adventures first buying, then driving cars in the North Caucasus. If you think buying a car is tricky in your home culture, just wait till you hear this.

If you’ve only learned about Chechnya through media outlets, you may be surprised at what you hear! History was made yet again last Saturday night when Khabib Nurmagomedov defended his undefeated record as the undisputed UFC lightweight champion of the world. He choked out American interim UFC champion Justin Gaethje in the second round to bring his record to 29-0. What followed the fight was as stunning as the fight itself as Khabib fell to his face weeping, and then announced his retirement from UFC fighting right there on the mat in the octagon. We cover all this and more in depth, from his relationship to his parents to analysis of his final words. The fight was made even more spectacular in light of aspects of the cultural context of the North Caucasus which we unfold for you. Congratulations Khabib Nurmagomedov on an honorable and historic career!

Tue, 03 Nov 2020 - 45min - 97 - CT85 – Music in the North Caucasus | Local Instruments | Rasul Gamzatov | EPIC REVEAL: Andrew Sings!
We give to you one of our most popular episodes ever – Music in the North Caucasus (Episode 13, December 15, 2017). It’s got some of the most listens of any of our shows. Check out the original shownotes:
This episode is the proverbial tip of the iceberg. It’s a lump on the tip of the iceberg. It’s snow dusting the lump the tip of the iceberg. You get our point: the topic of “Music in the Caucasus” is deep and wide and, much like the iceberg, much of it remains obscured to us outsiders looking in.
Today Eli takes us on a brief audio tour of some of local instruments from Dagestan using ethnographic recordings he took during his summer travels. We reflect on what marks out “folk” music from other kinds, such as classical and pop. And, most special, Andrew sings. Just a bit. But it’s inspirational.

While religion may be a tender subject to bring up in mixed company in some parts of the world, in the North Caucasus, it’s unavoidable. Hardly a day goes by that we don’t talk religion with one friend or another. To understand the Caucasus, then, is to talk—and listen, and hear, and think—about religion. Over the next three episodes we will air an extended conversation between the two of us about the many colorful facets of religion in this region. As always, much is based on our experience with our many friends from many backgrounds. We want to acknowledge up front that even though we are not endorsing one thing or another, some listeners will likely feel misrepresented. Please know that is not our purpose at all. If you know us, you know that we are open to learning more! So let this serve as an invitation for more discovery about this rich, deep, and pervasive part of life in the North Caucasus. Today’s conversation dwells on the multiplicity of religious influences that entered Dagestan through the ancient city of Derbent, as well as through the Western Caucasus. Judaism, Christianity, and Islam all had established presences here at various times and much architecture remains to show it.

***SEE VIDEOS ON CAUCASTALK WEBSITE***Summer is nearly here, and in the North Caucasus one thing that means is weddings. (Well, usually it does. Not so much these days.) Lines of white cars decked with flowers and ribbons careening through the city, horns blaring. Massive gatherings around massive piles of food. Fiery Lezginka dancing, tons of toasts, sometimes guns fired in the air, always much merriment. Today we comb through our collective experiences of local wedding to compare and contrast a traditional Western wedding with its North Caucasus counterpart. What is similar? Where are they different? We discover that core values and community life are always reinforced and also renegotiated through weddings.

Next month marks 75 years since the end of WWII. Its devastating effects touched every corner of Europe, but many are surprised to learn that the North Caucasus are no exception. Nazi forces aimed as far as oil fields in Chechnya in the east to fuel their forces as well as the ports of the Black Sea to the west to land their ships from Crimea. Neither campaign succeeded. Today we remember some of the heroic efforts of Caucasus peoples in defending their fatherland and turning Nazis back from these lands.

We often find ourselves explaining to people that we are not the only foreigners living here in the North Caucasus, or in Russia, for that matter. Since last year we’ve been corresponding with our now friend, Felix, a writer, traveler, and scholar from the UK who, like may others, has been won over by the Caucasus. Felix has traveled into many regions of the North Caucasus. Plus he has published three articles on his experiences. He’s a wonderful advocate, a culture-crosser, and a jolly good bloke to talk with (that’s American for trying to sound British). We’re sure you’ll enjoy the conversation as much as we did! Oh… and please forgive the drill. Concrete buildings + hammer-drills + midday interviews and presto: NOISE. But it’s bearable (at least in the recording).

Heart of Chechnya Mosque | Lake Kezenoi-Am | Chepulgash
Interest in Chechnya is at an all-time high. It is an ancient, fascinating, complex, and little understood place. Our good friend Abdula, local tour guide and couch surfing host, takes us on a virtual tour of his homeland. He delivers expert tips on where to stay, what to eat, and places not to miss. Many of the foods may be practically impossible to pronounce (see the episode tags), but they’re much easier to eat. We can assure from experience that the flavors—and the perhaps surprisingly warm memories—of a trip to Chechnya will linger with all who visit.

We continue our Trans-Caucasus tour with another visit “south of the border,” this time to Georgia. (The country.) Our guest Giorgi actually takes his name from his motherland. An aspiring ethnologist, Giorgi skillfully traces many historical and cultural lines that have given rise to the character of this fascinating country today. Georgia stands out as particularly distinct among the family of Caucasus cultures with markedly different food, dress, a wholly unique language, and predominately Orthodox Christian population. Yet as you will hear Georgia feels right at home with its sister Caucasus nationalities.
Outro clip: A fun mashup of Georgian polyphonic vocal singing with an old French folk song! by Ensemble Adilei. A recent cover of the same song from the 1972 Georgian film The Fourth Bridegroom (Чари-рама or Четвёртый жених).

“In Russia, walking is exalted and extraordinary. It is not mundane. I’m not talking about the word ‘to walk’ (khodit), a verb that merely signifies moving from place to place by foot. This is about the holy of holies in Russian which is to gulyat . . .” Yes, in today’s episode we dip into that deep well of Russian culture and psyche: taking a walk. But as you’ll hear it is so much more than that. The topic os so vast and expansive that we truly need an entire episode just to scratch the surface.
