Join us on this episode of The Psychology Talk Podcast as we delve into the extraordinary realm of entheogens and the wisdom they hold. Once confined to counterculture circles, the use of psychedelics is now inching closer to the mainstream, with millions of Americans having experienced their transformative effects.
Our guest, acclaimed author and researcher Rachel Harris, PhD, sheds light on the evolving landscape of psychedelic exploration and the potential loss of invaluable knowledge as legal and medical institutions embrace these powerful medicines.
In her latest book, "Swimming in the Sacred: Wisdom from the Psychedelic Underground," released on May 9, 2023, Harris presents an illuminating retrospective of psychedelics' last fifty years. Drawing from in-depth interviews with female elders who have served as guides in the underground psychedelic community, Harris uncovers the hidden insights, healing potential, and spiritual growth cultivated through sacred entheogenic journeys.
While current psychedelic research focuses on therapeutic applications involving limited counseling sessions, Harris emphasizes the need to honor the hard-earned knowledge amassed by seasoned guides. She highlights the disparity between research protocols and the best practices developed over decades of underground work, urging us not to overlook the invaluable wisdom gained through these experiences.
Dr. Rachel Harris brings a wealth of expertise to the conversation. With a Ph.D. in psychology and over four decades of private practice, she also spent ten years in an academic research department, publishing numerous scientific studies and receiving recognition such as the National Institutes of Health New Investigator's Award.
Splitting her time between a serene island in Maine and the vibrant San Francisco Bay Area, Harris has become a prominent voice in the field of psychedelics.

Their novel decentralized clinic model provides member psychotherapists with unprecedented access to a KAP-trained medical team, as well as a robust care management platform designed to deliver personalized treatment plans for enhanced clinical outcomes. Over 1M+ licensed mental health professionals in the U.S. now have access to transformative psychedelic therapies to augment their practice and significantly improve patient outcomes.
Jonathan Sabbagh is the Co-Founder and CEO of Journey Clinical, the leading telehealth platform for licensed psychotherapists in the US to expand their practice with transformative psychedelic therapies. A serial entrepreneur, Jonathan built his career in finance, spending over two decades working for hedge funds in Switzerland and NYC. After receiving a difficult diagnosis of PTSD and extreme burnout, Jonathan left the world of finance to focus on his mental health. During this period, he experienced firsthand the transformative benefits of psychedelic therapies, particularly plant medicine and Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP), which transformed his condition and inspired him to begin formal studies to become a clinical psychotherapist. Jonathan’s personal breakthroughs with psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy, as well as his research studies at The New School motivated Jonathan to expand access to safe, effective psychedelic therapy for all. The result was the founding of Journey Clinical in 2020, a novel decentralized clinic mode for clinical psychotherapists that provides unprecedented access to KAP for their patients, giving over 1M+ licensed mental health professionals in the U.S. access to transformative psychedelic therapies to augment their practice and significantly improve patient lives.
Jonathan and Dr. Hoye discusses his journey from the work of finance to the world of mental health and psychedelically assisted psychotherapy. This is an interesting voyage of transformation and healing, and we trust you will enjoy the conversation.

On this encore episode of the Psychology Talk Podcast Dr. Hoye interviews Dr. Jia Gottlieb, M.D. about his new book, "Aah…The Pleasure Book."
Dr. Hoye and Dr. Jia discuss the concept of pleasure from an Epicurean perspective. They dive deep into the issue of pleasure having been placed on the back burner, so to speak, culturally for 1600 years. Dr. Jia spells out how pleasure drives us towards curiosity in life and discovery of the mysteries of the universe. They discuss the neurology of pleasure in the three basic structures of the brain, and how they can be mapped into a four-stage model of pleasure.
The control of pleasure is all around us: our reward systems of our brains these having been relegated to the click of a mouse of a “like” on social media platforms, and by hierarchical structures misleading us to only find pleasure in endless consumption, monolithic, homogenous cultures, and dogmatic religious structues. How can we salvage and orient ourselves to the practical, Epicurean philosophy of pleasure, and better control our minds and lives through freedom? Listen in to find out.
Dr. Jia was born to an Austrian Jewish father and Chinese mother and grew up in a white, middle-class suburb outside of Chicago. After graduating from college, he backpacked around the world for a year. During a 12-day trek in the Himalayas, he found his calling as a doctor. He received his MD from Northwestern University, completed his residency in family medicine at the Community Hospital of Sonoma County, California, and then traveled to China, Japan, and India to study acupuncture, martial arts, yoga, and other ancient practices. Shortly after returning to the States, Dr. Gottlieb established Still Mountain Clinic in Boulder, Colorado, where he provided patients a unique therapeutic approach based on his extensive training in both Western medicine and Eastern healing art

I read a lot of self help books. I admit it, I'm a bit of a self-help junkie. It helps me to keep up on trends in the pop-psychology world, and better understand what some folks talk about with me in session. It also helps me to sort out what works and what doesn't, and find recommendations for my psychology patients.
Matthew Dicks has written a very good, no, an excellent self-help book, "Someday Is Today: 22 Simple, Actionable Ways to Propel Your Creative Life." Matt has distilled a lot of social and cognitive psychology hacks into some wonderful stories (he's a stand up comedian, writer, and storyteller, as well as a minister, so he ought to be good at it!).
Matthew and I sit down in this episode of the Psychology Talk Podcast to talk about, you guessed it, his book. Along the way I point out his research as quite good and digestible for your unconscious minds, and just a really inspirational, enjoyable format. I hope you enjoy our chat, and I hope you pick up the book for your summer reading list. Or fallow winter, or spring, or whenever you are reading this paragraph.

The mystery of consciousness has confounded the western scientific paradigm for centuries. Often considered an epiphenomenon of matter, new information has been accumulating that pushes us beyond that paradigm, and suggests that matter is the floor, or basis of all physical phenomena in the universe. These ideas and perspectives echo older, indigenous religious and philosophical ideas.
On this episode Dr. Thomas R. Verny is our guest. Dr. Verny is a psychiatrist, writer and academic. He has previously taught at Harvard University, University of Toronto, York University, Toronto, St. Mary’s University, Minneapolis, Minnesota and the Santa Barbara Graduate Institute.
Today he will be discussing his new book, The Embodied Mind: Understanding the Mysteries of Cellular Memory, Consciousness, and Our Bodies. We delve into the mystery of consciousness and the conversation between our hearts and minds, well as the manifold aspects of memory and newer, quantum theories of mind.

Journey Clinical is on a mission to address the growing mental health crisis by unlocking access to legal, evidence-based Psychedelic-Assisted Psychotherapies (PAP) across the United States. Journey Clinical has built a turnkey telehealth platform that enables licensed mental health professionals to expand their practice, starting with Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP).

Guided, twice-daily (17-minute) treatments use a sensor sampling the patient’s exhaled air (to measure CO2 levels and respiration rates). These physiological markers are displayed in real-time on a tablet as visual feedback along with rising and falling audio tones to teach patients how to normalize respiration rate and expired CO2 levels.

On this episode of the Psychology Talk Podcast Dr. Hoye is joined by Dr. Jeremy Narby, PhD. Dr. Narby is a Canadian anthropologist and author. In his books, Narby examines shamanism and molecular biology, and shamans' knowledge of botanics and biology through the use of entheogens across many cultures. He grew up in Canada and Switzerland, studied history at the University of Kent at Canterbury, and received his doctorate in anthropology from Stanford University. He works as Amazonian projects director for the Swiss NGO Nouvelle Planète.He is the author of several books, including “The cosmic serpent: DNA and the origins of knowledge” (New York: Penguin/Tarcher, 1998).
Dr. Narby discusses his book, Plant Teachers: Ayahuasca, Tobacco, and the pursuit of Knowledge, which he coauthored with Rafael Chanchari Pizuri, an elder of the indigenous Shawi people of Peru. Dr. Narby goes into great detail about the cultural aspects of plant medicines in indigenous cultures. In particular, the South American, Shamanic uses of both tobacco and ayahuasca. Tobacco as it has been adulterer by European-based framing and industrial practices is nothing like the plant as used in South American, indigenous healing and spiritual practices. Overall, Dr. Narby advocates and hopes for a blending of Western approaches to science and medicine with that of the wisdom traditions of indigenous elders.

Dr. Narby discusses his new book, Plant Teachers: Ayahuasca, Tobacco, and the pursuit of Knowledge, which he coauthored with Rafael Chanchari Pizuri, an elder of the indigenous Shawi people of Peru.

On this episode of the Psycholopgy Talk Podcast Dr.
