This week Ryan and Jordan sit down in studio to discuss the career rise of Kelsea Ballerini. From her roots in Knoxville, TN, to just up the road in Nashville, she is putting the industry on notice. She has always been a great singer with a pretty face, but now she has used her life experiences to write and produce thoroughly entertaining music. These new style of songs have spread like wildfire. Kelsea has been on a media tour talking with people from all walks of life, now it’s CMC’s turn. We also discuss the complaints that Morgan Wallen fans sent in to cry about the fact that not everyone loves him as much as them. Ryan and Jordan meet in studio this week to shine a light on songwriting legend, John Prine. When you think of iconic storytellers, a few names come to mind: Dylan, Dolly, Cash… Prine, in our opinion, belongs in that conversation! Born in Illinois, Kentucky has claimed him as one of our own. One of the most impressive aspects of Prine’s career was his influence! So many artists today mention John Prine as a hero, mentor, or goal. The once mailman, wrote and sang his way into every hall of fame that had an open door. We hope y’all enjoy our tribute to this legend! Thank you all for your support! This episode we take a walk through Tammy’s career apex and George’s attempt to climb back into country music’s good graces. With success, comes opportunistic leaches, like George Richey. Though they stayed married throughout the rest of their lives, they began their relationship due to a few convenience factors. Richey took advantage of Tammy’s vulnerability and weaseled his way into her bed, later took her as his wife. We discuss the episode scene by scene and take a few trips down rabbit holes as they come up. What did you think of the episode? Did you know Tammy was dealing with the addiction? This episode we get to witness the birth of their child, Tammy’s introduction to pain killers, George’s alcohol relapse, as well as, their huge show in Las Vegas. Most of the major occurrences in the episode revolve around that Vegas show. Thu, 22 Dec 2022 - 22min - 71 - The Greatest Vocalist in Country Music History: Chris Stapleton
This week, by request, we finally get back in the studio to put a spotlight on the best voice in the country music industry; Chris Stapleton. Chris’ voice has all the sound and soul of a blues crooner with all of the texture of a country dynamo. Personally, I would put him up against any other voice to battle it out. We discuss the recent problems with concert tickets prices and other recent topics. We go through Chris’ career, as well as, his early life, and his personal life. He has definitely earned every ounce of success he has! Since 2001, he has dedicated his life to this musical journey. After his bluegrass band, his southern rock band, and after meeting his beautiful wife, Morgane, his career finally started to reach the pinnacles that are all too obvious now. His performances are always crowd pleasing, but(Jordan’s opinion) if you truly want to hear that special sound that can never be duplicated by a mortal man, a duet with his wife Morgane… that is worth the price of admission. As the Valedictorian of his graduating class, it seems he was always destined for great things. He is only getting started if you ask me! Thanks, as always for supporting us! Please remember to like, share, rate, review, follow, etc. join us on our Facebook group page! That’s actually the place where Stapleton was requested, by friend of the show, James Blevins. Wed, 21 Dec 2022 - 1h 08min - 70 - "Stand By Your Man" George & Tammy Review of EP 2
After the second installment of “George and Tammy”, the guys get together to share their initial reactions. We learned ALOT about Tammy this week, deservedly so. The prettier half of this power couple sure did overcome a ton of adversity on her way to the top. Tammy dealt with the glass ceiling that still keeps women from the top today, but finessed the situation as well as one possibly could. The guys discuss the hurdles that female artists have to go through, as well as, the state of present day country music. “Stand By Your Man” was realized, rearranged, and released all within the time period of this episode. The show did a fantastic job tying in all of the true aspects of this dynamic duo and in doing that, they birthed the song, “Stand By Your Man.” Thank you all for listening/ watching. Tue, 13 Dec 2022 - 30min - 69 - George & Tammy EP1 “The Race Is On” review
Buckle up folks! “George and Tammy” kicked off their six part series with a bang! Ryan and Jordan, from the Country Music Critic, have decided to do reaction videos to each episode of the limited series. Episode 1 came in with a long rumored story and went out the same way. George Jones was one of the most prolific stars in country music history. When you have stardom to his magnitude you get a long list of folklore that trickles down through history. The couple that was seemingly “whispered” about the most, finally gets their story told and the record gets straightened. We break it down, scene by scene, and give our honest reactions and thought. We also go through the main castings, with a few of their past works so you can familiarize yourself with them. Remember to tune in to SHOWTIME on Sunday for episode 2, then look for our reaction next Monday. Check out our weekly podcast wherever you get your podcasts. Like, Share, Rate, Review, and Follow us. Lainey, coming off of being the darling of the CMAs, continues her steady climb into superstardom. Her speaking voice is just as authentic as her singing voice and her effort:talent ratio has set her up as a fan favorite. Fri, 02 Dec 2022 - 54min - 67 - Billy Strings; String game is so strong it’s his last name…
This week Ryan and Jordan sit down to discuss a different type of artist than normal. Bluegrass is packed with top of the line musicians, none better than this week’s spotlighted artist(in Jordan’s opinion) Billy Apostal, AKA Billy Strings. Billy left his Michigan roots and has exploded onto the country, folk, and bluegrass scene. Taught by his step-dad, he took to stringed instruments like a fish to water. To watch him play is like watching poetry in motion. We go through his young career up to present day. As always, we go off the rails about many things, including but not limited to Thanksgiving. Barely over 30 years old, Strings has a lifetime ahead of him in the industry. He is only going to gain momentum as he broadens his fanbase. Thanks for listening and supporting us! Sun, 27 Nov 2022 - 1h 00min - 66 - Paint Me a Tracy Lawrence
One of the most underrated artists in country music history, Tracy Lawrence, is this week’s spotlighted artist. Before diving into all things Tracy Lawrence, we daydream about winning the Powerball. After starting a dream of his own in 1990, Lawrence solidified his place in country music lore one album/song at a time. As time marches on, we are constantly reminded of the influence and direct impact his chart toppers made on the genre’s history. His trademark hair and mustache drove the women crazy in his hay day and his unique voice delighted country music fans for years on the airwaves. Lawrence battled turmoil and strife his entire career but somehow is still today performing and drawing crowds. This legend will live on forever in his art and should find his way into the hallowed Country Music Hall of Fame one of these days(in our opinion). Fri, 11 Nov 2022 - 1h 19min - 64 - 2022 CMA Awards Recap: Turns out, we are psychic!
Fresh off of last nights CMA awards, we met up to go over the night’s happenings. After sweeping last years awards show prediction competition, Jordan looked to continue his dominance. Ryan, however, had other things in mind! As a show, we killed it! We would venture to guess that no other show was as successful in their predictions as us. We go through each performance and award as they happened just to recap for those not able to catch it or those looking to relive last night’s show. Luke Combs’ couldn’t have said it better… “it was the most country the show has been in a long time.” And folks….. we are here for it! What a night! As always, like, share, rate, review, and follow. Also, join us on Facebook to interact with us and the other supporters. Thank you! God Bless! Hasta Mañana. P.S. there is a family that could use your prayers if you can, they need all the prayers you can give. Thu, 10 Nov 2022 - 41min - 63 - Tyler Childers, Yes you can take your hounds to Heaven!
Ryan and Jordan sit down this time to go over and through Childers’ latest album “Can I Take My Hounds to Heaven?” We guide you through each song and describe the way the songs hit us. Through the episode we go down a few rabbit holes that are off the wall and off topic. This new album features covers, old songs reworked, a few instrumentals, and a few new songs that quench our musical thirst. This album is unlike any other we have experienced and in a style that only Tyler could pull off. Let us know what you think of the album! Find our Facebook group and possibly our new Sub-Reddit page. Thanks, as always, for supporting us and listening! Reach out to us and let us know what you want to hear next! Stay safe! God Bless! Sun, 30 Oct 2022 - 1h 11min - 62 - The Scariest moments in Country Music
With Halloween approaching, we decided we wanted to address “scary” moments in country music history. What is the scariest thing to most adults outside of crimes? Getting arrested!!! We just go through a list of country music stars that have either been in cuffs or showered in a “community“ setting. Here’s a hint… alcohol is almost always involved. We hope you enjoy this change of pace episode. Please remember to like, share, rate, review, and follow us. We appreciate all of you more than you know! Reach out to us on our Facebook page and let us know what is on your mind, who you want to hear an episode about. Thank you! Mon, 24 Oct 2022 - 33min - 61 - Remembering the First Lady of Country Music, Loretta Lynn
This week we decided the best thing to do to honor fellow Kentuckian Loretta Lynn following her peaceful passing. Lynn came from the humblest of beginnings and after marrying “Doo” her legacy began to come to fruition. We go through her life’s timeline. We share details about her days in the limelight, her autobiography, her children, her influence, and her tendency to shake things up in her prime. Loretta was/is an absolute legend. She means a lot to country music and the state of Kentucky, and always will! Always remember, LIKE, SHARE, RATE, REVIEW, COMMENT, etc. tell a friend about us! Wed, 28 Sep 2022 - 29min - 58 - Koe Wetzel gives us the Creeps!
After a short hiatus, Ryan and Jordan hit the studio again to discuss another East Texas musical force. Koe Wetzel may not be country but he is impressive. He is more up Jordan’s alley with his combination of grunge, southern rock, and country stylings. More than 4 albums in, Wetzel has amassed quite the following. He has enough moxie to allow a goldfish to do an 8 count on a bull named Hurricane Earthquake and enough talent to power a 10 year old to win a PGA U.S. Open tournament. If you didn’t know of him, now you do! Please Follow, Like, Rate, Review, Share, and tell all of your friends to do all of those things! We appreciate your support and would love to hear your feedback! Join us on Facebook. Tue, 20 Sep 2022 - 1h 00min - 57 - Zach Bryan; Is it something in the Orange?
Ryan and Jordan place the spotlight on Zach Bryan this week. The military veteran has climbed his way to an extremely impressive spot in a very short period of time. In a span of 3 albums, he has managed to amass a gigantic following that seem to salivate in anticipation for his work. And… if his new songs are anything like his massive hit, “Something In the Orange,” I’m waiting with baited breath! If you are unfamiliar with Zach, you will learn a few things: he’s a great story teller, comes from a military family, dedicated an album to his mother, and the list goes on…. Wed, 31 Aug 2022 - 19min - 54 - John Anderson-Something Borrowed album review
Ryan and Jordan sit down this week and react to the tribute album headlined by a star-studded lineup. We go song by song giving our honest opinion. We were fans of a few, others didn’t hit the mark for us. One major takeaway is the fact that we believe John Anderson should’ve just performed them and called it a greatest hits. It’s hard to beat the original, especially when the original is John Anderson! Let us know what you think! As always, Like, Share, Rate, and Review. We can’t make the dream a reality without you! And, we can’t improve much without your feedback. We know you are listening, tell us why, where, how, and what you want more of. Contact us on our Facebook page! This week Ryan and Jordan discuss the legend, Hank Williams Sr. Although his life was cut short at the age of 29, he influenced country music in a way that other legends can’t come close to. His list of written songs is extremely long for his short life span. Hank overcame so many obstacles to solidify his legend status. We go through his portfolio, personal life, career path, and we go into detail about his death. Alcohol claimed his life but his music will live forever. We hope you enjoy! Ryan and Jordan take a stroll down Cody Jinks Lane this week. From his heavy metal beginning to his outlaw country present, Jinks has amassed one of the largest fanbases in the industry. This independent (by choice) artist is pulling off feats that only a handful of artists could muster. Another Texas based artist with his own type of flare, Jinks uses his clever/ dark writing styles to pull out all of the emotions. We hope you enjoy getting to know Cody as much as we did. Sun, 07 Aug 2022 - 56min - 51 - Keith Whitley- “Don’t Close Your Eyes” on this episode!
This week Ryan and Jordan unpack the life and career of a Legend. From deep in the Eastern Kentucky mountains, Whitley exploded onto the scene packing his one of a kind gorgeous voice. Keith was one of the only dudes with a perm that could make it to legend status. 34 years wasn’t enough, but that’s all we got. Alcoholism took his life WAY too early! Still to this day, we hear the music that he graced our ears with. This haunted man showed you just how sad and devoted he was in every verse he wrote and sang. With wife, Lorrie Morgan, he found a love that he feared losing. Keith Whitley is the artist that other artists look up to. There will never be another quite like him. Taken far too soon but just late enough for him to solidify his place at the top of the industry. Thanks folks! Please remember to like, rate, review, share, follow, and tell your friends and family. God Bless! Also, please say a prayer for the flooding victims in Eastern Kentucky. Hasta Mañana --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/countrymusiccritic/support
