COP29 – False Solutions Souparna Lahiri COP29 – False Solutions On today’s show, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change – Conference Of Parties 29 started this week. I’ll speak to Souparna Lahiri, Senior Climate and Biodiversity Policy Advisor for Global Forest Coalition about the false solutions being presented. From the Global Forest Coalition Press Release: “At UNFCCC COP29 in Baku, the Global Forest Coalition (GFC) is urging immediate action to end the financing of false solutions to climate change, such as carbon trading and offsetting, REDD+, monoculture plantations, bioenergy, and geoengineering. These projects, often carried out using bilateral and multilateral climate finance, avoid real emission reductions while displacing communities, damaging ecosystems, and exacerbating inequalities. GFC is calling for redirecting public funding to support genuine community-driven, rights-based, and gender-just, climate solutions. GFC is also spotlighting the urgent need to transform global food and agriculture systems to foster climate resilience and justice. With industrial food systems contributing a third of global greenhouse gas emissions and heavily relying on fossil fuels, GFC is advocating for a shift from intensive, corporate-driven agriculture to agroecological systems that prioritize the rights of local communities, food sovereignty, and climate resilience.” Description of REDD+: Reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries. The ‘+’ stands for additional forest-related activities that protect the climate, namely sustainable management of forests and the conservation and enhancement of forest carbon stocks. Fri, 15 Nov 2024 - 59min - 849 - Standing Above the Clouds
Standing Above the Clouds – Picture of Activists On today’s show, I’ll speak to filmmaker Jalena Keane-Lee about her documentary “Standing Above the Clouds”. This is the ongoing story about the fight against the construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope on Mauna Kea in Hawai’i. “Standing Above the Clouds was created through a collaborative process with our film protagonists. Through making this film, our team aimed to re-imagine the documentary form to be a healing process that returned agency to the community featured in our film through a trauma informed practice of affirmative consent. We worked closely with our onscreen collaborators at every step of the process and have taken great care to mitigate any legal, emotional, or cultural harm that releasing a film might cause. It is our team’s great privilege and honor to have been invited into the Mauna Kea protector community and into the lives and homes of the families you see in our film.” ~ Jalena Keane-Lee (director, cinematographer, producer) The film is an intimate journey through the women’s lives both on and off the mountain. It explores the physical and emotional toll of sustaining a grassroots movement. After nine months of living on the mountain, it gifts each woman with hope, strength and the understanding that victory is in standing in unity for sacred places where healing occurs through the sisterhood they have created along the way. Sun, 06 Oct 2024 - 0min - 843 - Fools’ Paradise (lost?) – A Love Letter To Our Wild
Poster for “Fools’ Paradise (lost?) – A Love Letter to Our Wild” On today’s show, I speak to documentary filmmaker Alexandra Lexton about her latest film entitled, “Fools’ Paradise (lost?) – A Love Letter To The Wild”. Opening at the Mill Valley Film Festival on October 12th, Fool’s Paradise (lost?) poses the questions to her subjects: How do we heal ourselves through reconnecting to the natural world? How do we heal what is left of the wild – our own inner wild and the outer wild? Alexandra Lexton: “In a time when climate change and environmental degradation pose dire consequences for both humanity and the planet, we hope that by revealing pathways for healing through our reconnection to the natural world, we will learn to care for it – and if the earth benefits, we will all benefit.” We switch gears and speak to The Climate Center’s Chief Operating Officer Barry Vesser on the Polluters Pay Package that was signed by Governor Gavin Newsom. These bills consist of: AB 3233 – the Local Environmental Choice and Safety Act, AB 1866 – the Idle Oil Wells Clean Up Bill, and AB 2176 – the Low Producing Wells Accountability Act. AB 3233 affirms the rights of local governments to protect their residents from oil and gas pollution. AB 1866 requires oil companies to plug their idle wells more quickly or pay increased fees, protecting public health and creating thousands of new jobs. AB 2716 imposes fines on low-production wells that are putting communities at risk in the largest urban oil field in the country. The Governor also signed SB 59, the electric vehicles (EV) bill. This piece of legislation aims to unlock the potential for California’s millions of electric vehicles to shore up the electric grid, power homes during outages, and lower energy bills for Californians. The bill would authorize the California Energy Commission (CEC) to require that EVs sold in California have bidirectional capability. Fri, 02 Aug 2024 - 59min - 833 - PLANETWALKER: The Inner Magic of Dr. John Francis
Planetwalker screenshot On today’s show: In 1971, John Francis, known the world over as ‘Planetwalker,’ witnessed an oil tanker collision in the San Francisco Bay. The sight of oiled birds on the shoreline caused him to give up motorized transport and rely solely on his own two feet. Months after that he took a vow of silence convinced that listening rather than adding fuel to any fire was the way ahead. Dr. John Francis from the documentary “Planetwalker: The Inner Magic of Dr. John Francis” The documentary PLANETWALKER: The Inner Magic of Dr. John Francis focuses on the period of John’s life from the oil spill through his meandering 20-year journey across the States where he resumes speaking to work on oil spill legislation with the US Coast Guard. During this time, it seemed like the whole world, every creed and color, saw John pass by and interacted with him if only fleetingly. By tracking some of these people down, the film explores the weblike and sometimes deeply personal consequences of John’s decades of pilgrimage. About the filmmakers: Dominic Gill is a former biologist turned filmmaker. He began his filmmaking career by selling his house, buying a bicycle, and riding 20,000 miles from Alaska to Argentina. His film on the subject, TAKE A SEAT, was released in 2011 on ITV4 to critical acclaim. It was distributed to over 45 countries, winning the Special Jury Prize at Banff Film Festival. Nadia Gill has been creating content in the outdoor space since 2011. Formerly an attorney, she decided to pursue a career in filmmaking after meeting her directing partner Dominic Gill. Together they formed Encompass Films and produced two seasons of a travel adventure series titled “Take A Seat: Sharing a Ride Across America”. It was distributed by NBCUniversal. Over the next few years under her direction, Encompass Films built a branded clientele including Red Bull, Timbuk2, Black Diamond Equipment, and more. Fri, 26 Jul 2024 - 59min - 832 - Are The Bees OK Or Not? USDA Bee Colony Numbers Disputed
Are the Bees OK? Pic of honey bees On today’s show, I’ll speak to award winning, investigative journalist Rebecca Raney. Her her latest article in U. S. Right To Know (usrtk.org) discusses the fudged numbers surrounding the nationwide bee population. In her article entitled, “Are the Bees Okay or Not. USDA Bee Colony Numbers Disputed”, Rebecca Raney states: Award-winning Investigative Journalist Rebecca Raney “Beekeepers and honey producers are disputing a federal honeybee census estimate of 3.8 million colonies in the United States in 2022 – a record number for the nationwide count. That estimate showed a 35 percent increase from the estimate of 2.8 million colonies in 2017. The report drove headlines claiming that U.S. bee farms are “buzzing” and that bees are “flourishing again.” To beekeeping advocates, inflated numbers of bee colonies – a prominent statistic on bee health – can undermine efforts to get funding to improve colony health. To conservationists, high-profile reports of record numbers of bee colonies in the face of a well-documented trend of insect extinctions complicate the job of maintaining public awareness about food security and the effects of pesticides.” Additional Articles by Rebecca Raney: “Anatomy of a science meeting: How controversial pesticide research all but vanished from a major conference” The post Are The Bees OK Or Not? A new analysis from Media Matters’ Climate and Energy Program found that coverage of environmental justice stories on morning and nightly news shows on ABC, CBS, and NBC suffered a decrease in the total number of segments in 2023, airing just 9 segments about environmental impacts, regulations, or health hazards that included a mention of a socially marginalized community. This is down from 12 segments in 2022 and 19 segments in 2021. We’ll switch gears and get an education on the double hatching of cicadas from University of Connecticut professor Dr. Chris Simon.
