On October 21, 2021 a small crew took their places on the set of a low-budget movie titled “Rust,” starring veteran actor Alec Baldwin. When it came time for the scene to be played out, Baldwin pulled out a revolver and a shot rang out. Confusion reigned as the frightened group looked in all directions. Then their eyes fixed on a single point …42-year-old cinematographer Halyna Hutchins gripping her chest. She took three small steps backwards then slumped to the floor. She’d been shot. A frantic call to 911 sent first responders cascading onto the rural movie set outside Santa Fe, New Mexico. A helicopter rushed Halyna to University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque. By the time she arrived, there was little for doctors to do. Within minutes, Halyna Hutchins was pronounced dead.  The questions were starkly obvious. Why was there live ammunition on a movie set? Just seven days after a quadruple homicide in Wichita, Kansas, a second would take place. This crime, known as The Wichita Massacre, would become one of the most famous crimes in the history of Kansas, along with those committed by infamous serial killer, Dennis Rader (known as BTK). At 5:24 am on Sunday, May 22, 2016, a 9-9-9 operator responded to a call from someone reporting a person who wasn’t breathing. The caller told the 9-9-9 operator that her daughter’s partner had collapsed. When emergency medical personnel reached the home, they found Lyndsey Vaux unresponsive and not breathing. Lyndsey Vaux died not long after the 9-9-9 call. Investigators could have never been prepared for the information they would learn about the events leading up to Lyndsey’s death. Lyndsey’s story involves domestic violence and coercive control in their most extreme forms. Listener discretion is strongly advised. Tristan Jensen was a young teenager who had his whole life ahead of him. He and his family lived in Redlands California. Unfortunately, he crossed paths with another boy who would end his life much too soon. After police caught up to Tristan’s murderer, JP Remsen, they discovered just how cold, and callous the boy was. 19-year-old Noah Presgrove left a house party in the early morning hours of September 4, 2023 in Terral, Oklahoma. The teenager had been drinking and partying at the house for two days, along with many of his friends. A big rig driver spotted Noah’s nude and battered body on the side of Highway 81, and immediately called 911. Nearly everyone assumed Noah had been killed by a hit and run driver, however, details surrounding his death and evidence found at the scene make many believe Noah was murdered. The high-profile trial of Massachusetts finance professor Karen Read ended without resolution last month. In the year’s most closely watched legal proceedings, the jury, composed of six men and six women, failed to agree on whether Read was guilty of murdering her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O’Keefe, or on the two other charges against her. O’Keefe, 46, was found battered, freezing and unconscious outside a Canton, Massachusetts home on the morning of January 29th, 2022, and later pronounced dead at the hospital. At trial, the commonwealth argued Karen, drunk and upset, struck John with her SUV and abandoned him in a snowstorm. Karen’s defense maintained her innocence, alleging that John was killed by fellow law enforcement officers during a house party and that Karen Read was framed by those officers. The live-streamed trial was a rollercoaster with all the drama of a Hollywood script: a police cover-up, misconduct, misogynistic and highly unprofessional text messages from the lead detective, a potential love triangle, lies, and betrayal. Millions were glued to the story, especially in New England, where papers referred to it as “Boston’s trial of the century.” What happens next is anyone’s guess as the story is far from over. On February 12, 1971 19-year-old Jesse McBane headed out to surprise his fiance, 20-year-old Patricia Mann. He was taking her to a Valentine’s Dance in Durham, North Carolina. The two lovebirds had to be back at Patricia's dormitory by 1:00 AM curfew. Only …she never returned. Durham police officers found Jesse’s Ford Cortina the next evening parked in a cul-de-sac. 12 days later, a land surveyor came upon what he thought was a mannequin’s leg sticking out from a pile of leaves. When he poked the extremity with a stick …he saw skin move. It was the missing students. Details from the crime scene suggested the couple had been tortured and murdered by hanging. Word of the heinous crime shocked the Tarheel State. The next day’s page 1 headline in the Durham Sun read: ‘Strangulation by Rope Killed Couple.” Over 50 years later, the double homicide remains North Carolina’s most notorious unsolved murder. Soon, Anna develops feelings for Derrick and begins what she calls a “relationship” with him. Derrick’s family reported Anna to the authorities and she eventually got charged with serious sex crimes. In the Summer of 1992, the scorching temperatures in Manhattan were of little concern to Marsha P. Johnson. Her days didn’t truly start until long after the sun had gone down. Fresh from the Pride Parade, Marsha made plans the evening of July 4th, 1992 to meet her friend Miss Kitty at The Anvil, one of the many gay bars lining Christopher Street in Greenwich Village. They were supposed to rendezvous at midnight. Only …Marsha never showed. Two days later, on July 6th, a passerby spotted something floating just off the Hudson River Pier shortly after sunrise. It was Marsha. The LGBTQ rights activist was dead at 46. Given Marsha’s notoriety as an outspoken supporter of gay and trans rights, friends immediately suspected foul play. The NYPD and medical examiner saw things differently, quickly declaring Marsha’s death a suicide by drowning. Those who knew the transgender pioneer well dismissed the notion that Johnson took her own life. Her history of substance abuse and depression notwithstanding, Marsha had never given any indication she was suicidal. Over 30 years have passed and still, Marsha P. There are two sides to every story. Somewhere in between varying accounts of a shared experience lies the truth, but the deceased can’t share their version of events. On January 29, 2022, Karen Read dropped off her boyfriend, John O’Keefe, at a house party in Canton, Massachusetts. When she awoke the next morning and found John not in bed, Karen became concerned. She drove around looking for him and eventually made her way to 34 Fairview Rd., the location of the house-party where she’d taken him earlier that morning. Karen screamed upon seeing John’s body lying in the front yard of the home, unconscious and covered in snow. John O’Keefe was dead. A murder investigation ensued, with Karen Read being the primary target. Karen’s defense, however, had a different theory. When two people meet, it’s exciting when there’s a mutual, instant affection for one another. It doesn’t always happen but when it does, it’s special. On rare occasions, however, a seemingly special human connection can actually be a bad thing, and in even more rare instances, it can lead to deadly consequences. The case we’re examining in this episode begs the question …would someone have died if two people had not had the opportunity to meet? A 1954 murder case out of New Zealand shocked the world due, in part, to the highly unlikely perpetrators. Honora Parker was savagely murdered on June 22, 1954. On September 29, 2020, the Iskander family of six went out for an evening stroll in their Westlake Village neighborhood having no idea of the tragedy that lay ahead. On that same evening, wealthy socialite Rebecca Grossman was having drinks at a local Westlake Village restaurant with Royce Clayton and Scott Erickson, two former major league baseball players. After downing margaritas, Grossman and Erickson got into their expensive cars and headed toward Grossman’s nearby condo to hang out. At some point, the two decided to race each other through the residential neighborhood. At that exact moment, Nancy Iskander and her three sons were crossing the street. Before they could respond, Rebecca Grossman and Scott Erickson came racing toward them in their vehicles fueled by bravado tequila. One of the vehicles struck two of the Iskander boys, Mark and Jacob, killing them. In 1987, 25-year-old Oregon native Jennifer Smith was viciously murdered in a Denny’s parking lot. She had no idea how important her death would end up being. Sheer terror arrived in a suburban Pennsylvania town on March 12, 1976. For the Abt family, it started out like any other weekday. Margaret and John Abt went to their respective jobs while the children attended school. The family never could’ve predicted it would be their last morning together. Twenty-four year old postal worker David Berkowitz, an admitted Satanist, would later claim his neighbors dog was possessed by a demon that was ordering him to kill. In this episode of Serial Streamers, Jami recaps the Netflix docuseries American Nightmare. In 2015, a 9-1-1 call came in to the Vallejo PD. It was a man claiming that his girlfriend, Denise Huskins, had been abducted from his home by perpetrators wearing wet suits. The man, Aaron Quinn, laid out an elaborate story for detectives who did not believe him. The media dubbed it the “Gone Girl” case due to the similarities it had to the movie. Law enforcement accused Aaron and Denise of perpetrating a “Kidnapping Hoax” which may have caused them not to properly investigate the alleged crime. As it turned out, the stranger-than-fiction story was true and a suspect was identified. Within moments of opening the Bank of America branch on Laurel Canyon Boulevard in North Hollywood, California on the morning of February 28th, 1997, the staff’s worst fears were realized. Two men, later identified as Larry Phillips Jr. and Emil Matasareanu, entered the bank wearing highly customized body armor. Grady Stiles Jr. came from a long line of sideshow performers who had a genetic condition known as ectrodactyly. When this defect occurs in the womb, the middle digits of the hand and foot are missing and the remaining ones fuse into two parts. Grady was born with two-fingered hands that resembled lobster claws, and footless legs ending just below the knee.  Like many of his relatives, Grady capitalized on his physical defects by appearing in traveling carnivals. It’s easy to imagine that a lifetime spent as a public spectacle could be emotionally taxing. But Grady had a coping mechanism: alcohol. For Grady, drinking heavily blurred out the pain of ridicule and rejection. Unfortunately, alcohol also made him incredibly mean and violent. This tendency toward violence would manifest into murder, with Grady being the perpetrator. Later, the man known as “Lobster Boy” would find himself on the other side of murder …falling victim to two bullets in the back of his head. In reality, the Twin Flames Universe guarantee is a twin FLOP because nobody seems to get what they were promised by alleged relationship scammers, Jeff and Shaleia Ayan (not their real names, of course). The TFU leaders also allegedly pressure members into certain gender-affirming surgeries that they may not have chosen for themselves.  Jami shares all of her hot takes on this disturbing, cult-like organization and doesn’t hold back on her feelings about its leaders. Ashley Ellerin bid farewell to her father at Los Angeles International Airport in February 2001. That evening, the eye-catching 22-year-old fashion student had plans with handsome young Hollywood actor, Ashton Kutcher. The pair were headed to a Grammy Awards after-party at a popular nightclub on the Sunset Strip in LA. Kutcher, then 23, pulled up to Ashley’s bungalow behind Grauman’s Chinese Theater around 10:45 PM on February 21, 2001 nearly three hours behind schedule. He knocked on Ashley’s front door. When she didn’t appear, Ashton knocked again. A call to Ashley’s phone went to voicemail. He tried the door handle, but found it locked. Guessing she might be punishing him for being so late, the former Calvin Klein model peered through the window. The lights were on but there was no sign of Ashley, only what he believed to be the remnants of a spilt glass of red wine from a party she’d hosted the night before. Only later would Ashton learn the red streak wasn’t wine …it was Ashley Ellerin’s blood. Confused and disappointed, Kutcher retreated to his car and headed out under the glow of the Hollywood sign. Not long before Ashton arrived to pick up his date, a serial killer, later dubbed the Hollywood Ripper, had also arrived at Ashley’s home. A series of three calls came into Walker County 9-1-1 the afternoon of October 3, 2016. The caller said a man shot himself and they needed an ambulance. A woman can be heard wailing and screaming in the background …she’s hysterical. An officer arrives on scene shortly after the third call was finished, and an investigation ensued. However, according to the victim’s family, a bungled investigation, misinformation in official reports, lying witnesses and the fact that all witnesses, and the victim, were drug users …led to an incorrect determination of the manner of death. September 4th, 2019 was a beautiful morning in the desert city of Victorville, California. For most residents in the neighborhood of the 13,000 block of Cabazon Court it was just another morning: quiet and uneventful. Inside one residence, however, chaos was brewing, and it would soon spill out onto the street, shattering the peace and quiet with screams and gunfire. By 8:35 that morning, 26-year-old Meagan McCarthy, a San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputy, would be brutally beaten and shot at with her own gun. And the man who attacked her, 21-year-old Ari Young, would be shot six times by responding deputies. Surprisingly, Ari survived and went on to defend his actions in court. In 2015, 17-year-old Michelle Carter was indicted on charges connected to the suicide of her 18-year-old boyfriend, Conrad Roy Jr III. In a controversial 2017 trial, a Taunton, Massachusetts jury found her guilty of involuntary manslaughter. A similar case occurred in May 2019, though it received much less publicity. Boston College students Inyoung You and her boyfriend Alexander Urtula had been dating for 18 months when he died by suicide. An investigation would uncover an abundance of abusive text messages from Inyoung in the months leading up to Alexander’s death. The Carter and You cases involved problematic text messages that many argue are what drove both victims in these cases to end their lives. But where does free will end and the power of suggestion take over? Is it possible to brainwash someone into ending their own life? When an alternative medicine doctor was found bludgeoned to death in her Bonita Springs, Florida home in the summer of 2015, friends and neighbors worried a burglar was on the loose, looking for his next random victim. Detectives with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office told the public that Dr. Teresa Sievers had been bashed in the back of the head after returning home early from a trip with her husband and two daughters. An online sleuth group wondered if Dr. Sievers’s death was connected to that of several other alternative medicine doctors throughout the country who had also died under mysterious circumstances in recent months. Convicted in 1989 of the brutal murder of 65-year-old Everett Carr in New Milford, Connecticut, Ricky Birch and Shawn Henning were sentenced to 50 years behind bars without any physical evidence tying them to the crime scene. At trial, prosecutors had to explain to a jury how the two men, then only in their teens, managed to beat and stab their victim over 25 times without getting a single drop of his blood onto their clothing. To do so, the district attorney’s office relied on the testimony of the state’s top pathologist ..a man very well known to true crime content enthusiasts. A man by the name of Dr. Henry Lee. Today, Dr. Lee is considered one of the country’s foremost experts on forensic science. Birch and Henning spent decades in prison substantially based on Dr. Henry Lee’s testimony at their trial. More than 30 years after they were convicted, new information came to light and eventually led to their convictions being vacated in 2020. Subsequent to that, Dr. Henry Lee’s reputation would come under intense scrutiny and he found himself in legal trouble.   The question now rests in the court of public opinion: Did Dr. Henry Lee make a devastating error on the witness stand? It would take years for the students to realize they had been scammed and abused by a man they had always believed was helping them. Late in the evening on Friday, January 8, 1993, the employees in one particular restaurant in Palatine Chicago didn’t know at the time that they would not be going home that night. Hours after these workers began their closing routine, all seven of their bodies would be discovered inside of Brown’s Chicken, a popular restaurant chain. Upon entering the bloody scene, officer Ron Conley dispatched backup saying “Five in the cooler.” This tragedy was the worst mass murder in the Chicago area since 1966 when Richard Speck murdered eight student nurses in their dorm. It would take nine long years for authorities to receive a break in the horrendous case widely known as the Brown’s Chicken Massacre. On a Summer day in 1997, Lance Butler and a friend drove into the Rockies west of Denver. The pair pulled over to dip their feet into the stream below. A glance toward the water’s edge revealed a horrific sight. There, wedged between two rocks, was the lifeless body of a female dressed only in blue jeans. It was 14-year-old, Brandy DuVall, who’d been reported missing by her mother the day prior. Her injuries told the tale of a merciless crime. Months later, a tip led investigators to several suspects who’d go on trial for her murder. On October 27, 1988, McLean County Coroner William Anderson had just come from the Central Catholic vs. University High School football game. Afterward, he was due to meet with members of his re-election campaign to go over strategies. Before the meeting, Anderson was volunteered by the others to get beer for the meeting. He went to the closest store, S&S Liquor Store, located at 703 N. Clinton Street in Bloomington-Normal Illinois. Anderson grabbed a six-pack and headed home for the strategy session. Just two to three minutes later, after having made it only a few blocks, Anderson’s pager went off, alerting him to go back to S&S Liquor Store. In June 2018, Tristan Beaudette and his brother-in-law Scott McCurdy had left their wives in Orange County to embark on a final camping trip together before Tristan and his wife Erica relocated to the Bay Area. Their home for the night …Malibu Creek State Park, near beautiful Malibu Beach. After a night by the campfire, Beaudette and McCurdy went to their respective tents and settled in for bed. Already asleep inside the separate tents were their most treasured possessions: Scott’s two boys, ages 3 and 5 and Tristan’s daughters, 2 and 4. Sometime after 1 in the morning on June 22, 2018, Scott was awakened by what he thought were fireworks. Then he heard Tristan’s daughters crying. Scott told his boys to stay put while he went to Tristan’s tent to investigate. There, he saw Tristan lying face down in the center of the tent and his daughters huddled together, crying. Tristan’s face was covered in blood.  Given Malibu’s reputation as a safe beach town, nobody believed Tristan’s murder was a random act of violence. On July 12, 2014 the body of 18-year-old Conrad Roy was discovered inside of his pickup truck. The teenager, who had a history of depression, died by suicide. At first, detectives had no reason to suspect foul play in Conrad's death, but they confiscated his cell phone anyway. After extracting data, detectives found thousands of text messages between Conrad and his girlfriend, 17-year-old Michelle Carter. The problem was that Michelle had been encouraging Conrad to kill himself in the weeks, days and minutes leading up to his death. The tragic incident then turned into a homicide investigation with Michelle Carter as the primary target. The Commonwealth v. Michelle Carter case was the first of its kind in that the defendant was being charged with manslaughter due to the virtual presence she had during Conrad's death. The 42-year-old carpenter was hired by Lloyd Lawrence, who happened to be a kingpin in a local methamphetamine ring. Instead of considering the danger he might face, Mease was blinded by dollar signs. This chance encounter set Mease’s life on a deeply violent trajectory. The triple homicide, known as the “Halloween Massacre,” occurred in Pasadena, California in 1993. As rare as violent crimes are in Pasadena, the Halloween Massacre was the second triple homicide in the City in less than a three-year time span. On Friday, March 22, 1991, at about 2:30 in the morning, Pasadena police received a call asking them to do a welfare check at a posh home located on the 1300th block of Fairlawn Way. Officers arrived about 18 minutes later to find three deceased teenage girls. The brutal crime scene would haunt the lead detective until his dying day.
