Roscoe and Willie had a big crowd down to the Memorial Day blues 57 festival.  Roscoe and Willie had everyone dancing and singing the blues. Some of the most famous blues singers were there.

Willie:  This is what we always wanted to do and talked about doing, Rosco. Having a union of blues entertainers.

Rosco:  Yeah, it should help radio business.

Willie:  And we shouldn't have to worry about those old so-called promoters and managers and people in the record business.

Rosco:  We ain't the record business, but we can help the musicians get work and get paid performing.

Willie:  That's right  bossman.

 But Rosco and Willie ran into some problems with the memorial day blues festival. One of their greatest entertainers on the list didn't show up. A big fight broke out indoors and Rosco and Willie got written up for owing money. All kinds of things were happening, but in the end Rosco and Willie managed to keep the music going and they entertaind the crowd themselves. They were able to pull off a successful festival that left everyone feeling happy and satisfied. The experience taught them to always be prepared for the unexpected in the world of event planning.

 Soon the festival was over.

Rosco: It was all your idea! You almost got us shut down tonight.

Willie:  You mean we, Rosco. We!  You see, that's how lies get out. Our number one entertainer didn't show up.

Rosco: But we took care of that.

Willie: There you go! We!

Little Milton was expressing pain. He was talking about a flow of tears if his lover ever left him. It's bad to hurt like that over someone.

Little Milton’s single Cry Me a River was released in 1972. The style of the song is sold on the Stax label. Little Milton’s records are still being sold because he's that soulful kind of blues we don't hear today. Little Milton’s single Cry Me a River is found on the very best of little Milton compilation album released in 2007. It's a great soul blues.

Cry Me a Riverwas produced by Donald Davis, a Detroit base-producer, label owner, songwriter, and guitarist. So if you're looking for some good old soul blues, check out Little Milton’s Cry Me a ariver.

Good evening everyone. Today I'm going to talk about Ed “Nassau Daddy” Cook. Ed Cook was a beloved DJ for WVON-one of Chicago's first major black radio stations. Ed Cook played rhythm and blues. He played Sonny Boy Williamson's Bring It On Home. Sometimes he was a little upset while doing his job because things weren't quite turning out the way he wanted. I can truly understand.

Ed:Hold it man! Hold it! Shoot! Messing up already!

Ed Cook switched the record to Sonny Boy Williamson because the wrong record was playing. He wasn't in a good mood. Cook had things to say about the weather.

Yes, I can truly understand Ed Cook. When it turns cold in the winter, things start happening, and it's aggravating.

Ed Cook played B.B. Kingand mentioned that king used to be a DJ, and said that he was smart to quit and become a musician.

Welcome again to Podcast and Blues. I am your host Gail Nobles. I want to talk about the sound of B.B. King from the 1950s. A much different sounding style of blues than when he was singing The Thrill Is Gone from the 1970s. Alan Freed would play BB King’s music.

B.B. King song Lonely and Blue reminds me of a song that Fats Domino would sing. Lonely and Blue is a song that you would call a blues ballad.

There's a whole album and collection of B.B. King singing blues ballads titled B.B.-King Heart and Soul. There's a song on the album that makes me think of the Platters.


The Platters, Fats Domino, and B.B. King were singing in the 1950s. They were all in the rock 'n' roll era in the genres of rhythm and blues.

Hello! You’re listening to Podcast and Blues. Today's topic is Bobby Bland Ain't No Love In The Heart Of The City.

Ain't No Love in the Heart of the City" is a 1974 R&B song written by Michael Price and Dan Walsh, and first recorded by Bobby "Blue" Bland for the album Dreamer.

While it is ostensibly a love song, some critics and fans have also heard it as a lament on urban poverty and hopelessness, also as a lament upon the struggle to achieve one’s goals in life in the absence of enternal support.

Well, I've heard Bobby Bland sing it, and I felt urban poverty and hopelessness and struggle to achieve. I see struggle today happening around me and on the news. It could be a love song too if you've lost someone that you love. Losing someone is just like losing everything.
Aint No Love In The Heart Of The City. It is a great song of feeling. It makes you think about the things that are going on in the world.

In the US, Bland scored a top ten hit on the Hot Soul Singles chart, where it peaked at #9, as well as peaking at #91 on the Hot 100.

Rowdy Blues by Kid Bailey

Kid Bailey was a Mississippi delta bluesman. His one known recording session occurred on September 25, 1929 in Memphis Tennessee. He collaborated with Charley Patton and a circle of Delta blues musicians who swapped melodies, riffs, and lyrics during the late 1920s and early 30s such as Son House and Tommy Johnson just to name a few.

Little is known about Bailey. His voice had a distinctly course yet youthful quality. Two of his recordings have survived: Rowdy Blues and Mississippi Bottom Blues in most digital releases. The tracks are attributed to Willie Brown yet one evidently the same artist created as Kid Bailey on the original 78-RPM recordings.

Christone Kingfish Ingram has a live album titled Live In London. Kingfish is a great vocalist and guitar player. He sounds like a legend at the age of 24. Kingfish has what blues listeners want to hear.

I couldn't wait to hear his first song on his album titled She Calls Me Kingfish.
He sings: She’s flipping out on me
She calls me king fish
Got me on the hook
If I don't quit that woman
I believe my fish is cooked.

I love the lyrics. If you are really wondering how Christone got the nickname Kingfish, according to Rolling Stone, one of his teachers gave him that name because he reminded him of the character Kingfish from the old sitcom Amos and Andy. I love that show.

Kingfish has a right good many songs on his album. Another song that I like from his album is Hard Times. He’s singing about what we see and what he sees, Hard Times. Kingfish sings real songs and plays real guitar music. That’s what I love about him and makes us continue to listen to the blues. Walter "Wolfman" Washington was a singer and guitarist based in New Orleans, Louisiana. While his roots were in blues music, he blended funk and R&B to create his own unique sound. He passed away at the age of 79. Washington had a band called the Roadmasters. He had a soulful voice his trademark was a wolf howl sound. Why was he called the Wolfman? It is said that he earned that nickname challenging other guitarist.

When you listen to Washington, you can hear the funk in his music. Check out his 1988 album Out Of The Dark, his 1998 album Funk Is In The House, his 2018 album My Future Is My Past, and his 2008 album Doing The Funky Thing.

Washington appears in performance footage in the 2005 documentary film Make It Funky which presents a history of New Orleans music and its influence on rhythm and blues, rock 'n' roll, funk and jazz . In the film he performs Barefootin with the house band.

When I listen to Walter “Wolfman” Washington, I hear the funk, blues, and some jazz.

I just happened to see him pop up in my feed on my Facebook page called “Blues Music”. Then I found Captain Jack on Spotify. He’s Da Captain. John Németh said in his lyrics this may be the last time we sing together.


John Németh is an electric blues and soul harmonicist, singer, and songwriter. And his music proves it. He has received five Blues Music Awards for Soul Blues Male Artist, Soul Blues Album, Traditional Blues Album of the year, Instrumentalist - Vocals and Instrumentalist - Harmonica.

I love his Song May Be the Last Time from his album May Be the Last Time. The album was recorded before his surgery according to John and he said hopefully- it won’t be his last time. Hopefully it won’t.

When you listen to the song “May Be The Last Time” it has a gospel blues style sound. John Németh has a great band and backup singers. They really sound soulful. The album “May Be The Last Time” was released in Sept. of 2022. Hopefully we’ll hear more from John Németh.

Hi! I'm Gail Nobles. Welcome to Podcast and Blues. Today’s topic is Albert White. A blues guitarist, singer, and songwriter. He has released two albums in his own name, although his musical career started in the late 1950s, when he played in Piano Red's then ensemble, later known as Dr. Feelgood & the Interns.

Albert White was born in Atlanta, Georgia.His was a musical family, having Piano Red as an uncle. He began learning to play the guitar from an early age with Piano Red noting that, by the age of nine, White was playing self-made chords on a ukulele. Red then sent White to learn further from his own guitarist, Wesley Jackson. White progressed to the stage that he joined Piano Red's band as guitarist in the late 1950s, becoming bandleader of Dr. Feelgood & the Interns in early 1962.

Albert White also had his own ensemble named the Rockers. By 2000, White joined the Music Maker family, benefiting from financial assistance, new equipment and help in recording his 2007 album, Soul of the Blues. He has songs such as, Hold on to Your Hiney, A Rose for My Lady, Bring it on Home to Me, Soul of a Man, Stranded in St. Louis, and more. So check out Albert White’s album, Soul of the Blues. Stan Mosley was born in Chicago, IL. He has performed over 46 years for crowds around the world. Stan Mosley is a legend in the music industry of soul according to his bio Mosley began singing in 1969.

According to Malaco, Shirley Brown took him on as a backup singer. In 1997, he came to Malaco to audition as a songwriter; instead, he found himself hired as a recording artist.
Today Stan Mosley has new music. His latest album release is titled “No Soul No Blues Stan Mosley”. It is great music, and the songs are sung by one of the best soul-blues singers which is Stan Mosley.

Tower of Power R&B and funk based band and horn section, originating in Oakland, California, that has been performing since 1968.[1] There have been a number of lead vocalists, the best-known being Lenny Williams, who fronted the band between early 1973 and late 1974, the period of their greatest commercial success. They have had eight songs on the Billboard Hot 100. Today’s topic is Johnny Rawls on Podcast and Blues. I’m Gail Nobles.

Johnny Rawls is a soul blues singer, guitarist, arranger, songwriter, and record producer. He was influenced by the deep soul and gospel music of the 1960’s as performed by James Carr and Z.Z. Hill.

To 2022, Rawls has realeased more than twenty albums under his name. He has been nominated many times for a Blues Music Award, and at the 40th Blues Music Award Ceremony, Rawls album, “I’m Still Around”, was named as the Soul Blues Album of the year.
Johnny Rawls has deep Mississippi Roots. He has an album title, “Going Back to Mississippi”. Rawls is singing songs such as Midnight Train, Reap What You Sew, Going Back To Mississippi, and If You Ever Get Lonely just to name a few.

Today I’m thinking of Benny Turner. Benny Turner is a blues musician. The younger brother of Freddie King and was the bass guitarist for the Freddie King Band. After many years as a sideman, Turner started his solo career.

Christmas is coming & Benny has a Christmas song titled, “I Want Some Christmas Cheer. The song is written by Benny Turner. It’s on Nola Blue Records. The song is online everywhere.

You can tell by the way Benny Turner sings & writes that he knows something about Christmas. “I Want Some Christmas Cheer” Throughout the song, while he tells a story, he keeps singing that line. Finally he’ll say, “ Well it’s Christmas. There goes my Christmas cheer.” Benny let’s you know that Christmas is not always the way we want it to be.

Albert King played a Gibson Flying V guitar. Lucy is the name given to the Gibson Flying V and a series of copies owned by guitarist Albert King.

Albert King could really play the guitar. I couldn’t copy the way he played. I’m not a guitarist. So I had to find my own way. It’s fun trying to play the guitar. I just put my own thing into it. Albert King had done the same thing when he heard other guitarist. When he couldn’t play exactly the way the other guitarist he heard, he would mix things altogether and do his own thing. But I’m no ways like Albert King. I just hit a few strings. I don’t play the guitar.

King signed with the Stax record label. Produced by Al Jackson Jr., King with Booker J. & the MGs recorded dozens of influential sides, such as “crosscut saw” and “ As the Years Go Passing By. In 1967, Stax released the album, Born Under a Bad Sign, a collection of the singles King recorded at Stax. The title track of that album ( written by Booker T. Jones and William Bell) became King’s best-known song and has been covered by several artists.

Today’s topic: Irma Thomas on Podcast & Blues.

Irma Thomas is a singer from New Orleans. She is known as the “Soul Queen of New Orleans”.

Thomas is a contemporary of Aretha Franklin and Etta James, but never experienced their level of commercial success.[2] In 2007, she won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album for After the Rain, her first Grammy in a career spanning over 50 years.

I love Irma’s song “ Anyone Who Knows What Love is (Will Understand). " It is a 1964 R&B song written by Jeannie Seely and Randy Newman. The song is about a woman who stays in a relationship with a man despite his bad behavior. while "Anyone Who Knows What Love Is (Will Understand)" peaked at number 52 in the Billboard Top 100 chart.

Irma Thomas is 81 years of age. According to New York Times, she began singing professionally in her teens, while already raising four children and by the mid-1960s, her career was taking off.

When he sings about getting up, it can make you want to get up & start the day and feel alright. Ra’Shad has a girl & he feels like he’s on top of the world. The Bluesman is a great guitarist. Hi! I’m Gail Nobles, and today’s topic is Gospel Blues. What is gospel blues? Gospel Blues is a form of blues-based gospel music that has been around since the inception of blues music. It combines evangelistic lyrics with blues instrumentation, often blues guitar accompaniment.

An example of Gospel Blues music is Blind Willie McTell. He would say, I’m gonna cross the River of Jordan.

Lord I’ve got cross that for myself
Says, nobody here can cross that for me
Lord I’ve got to cross that for myself

I’m not a guitarist. My way off playing is not like McTell’s but the tune of the song went that way. Blind Willie McTell was a Piedmont Blues and Ragtime singer and guitarist. He played with a fluid, syncopated fingerstyle guitar technique. He was also an adept slide guitarist, unusual among ragtime bluesmen. His vocal style, a smooth and often laid-back tenor. McTell performed in various musical styles including religious music. He played what we call Gospel Blues. He left us a fine collection of gospel blues songs like “I’ve Got To Cross the River of Jordan.

WHAT’S INSIDE TODAY’S BLUES

What are the top albums, singers, and blues singers today? Well, we have blues singers today like Toronzo Cannon. Bluesman Toronzo Cannon and his band The Chicago Way will perform live at Mojo’s Boneyard in Evansville on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2022.

Toronzo Cannon, an electric blues guitarist. He’s a vocalist and songwriter. He grew up on the South side of Chicago near the Robert Taylor Homes and Theresa’s Lounge where he heard blues artists including Buddy Guy and Junior Wells.

Cannon has performed at the Chicago Blues Festival nine times. He headlined in 2015.

The Chicago Tribune said, "Chicago-based Toronzo Cannon, who performed for the first time as a festival headliner, made the most of this opportunity to win over a new audience. His extroverted guitar style sounded especially compelling when he closely engaged with keyboardist Ronnie Hicks' sturdy chord changes. Cannon also has a forceful singing voice, whether narrating an original murder ballad or on his upbeat "Sweet Sweet Sweet."

Today’s topic is Shaun Murphy on Podcast and Blues - Be Good to Yourself.

Shaun Murphy is a blues and R&B singer songwriter, best known for her powerhouse singing style. Sometimes credited as Stoney, her recording career started in 1971 with Motown Records.

Murphy’s career in vocals has been both as band lead singer and session singer. She has sung, toured, and recorded with such acts as the Moody Blues, Bob Seger, Herbie Hancock, Phil Collins, and more.

I love to hear her sing the song, Be Good To yourself. I love the way the band plays. The song was also performed by Frankie Miller. It was first released by Andy Fraser in 1975.

According to Blues Magazine, Joanne Shaw Taylor has a new album titled, “Nobody’s Fool”. She has a new single titled, “Just No Getting Over You”.

Hi, I’m Gail Nobles & You’re listening to Podcast and Blues. Today’s topic is Joanne Shaw Taylor. Joanne is an English singer and guitarist. She was discovered by Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics at the age of 16.

Taylor's albums via Ruf Records, White Sugar (2009) and Diamonds in the Dirt (2010), peaked at No. 8 in the US on the Billboard Top Blues Albums chart. Her No. 1 album, The Blues Album (2021), was released via Joe Bonamassa's Keeping the Blues Alive Records.

In 2010, Taylor won Best Female Vocalist at the British Blues Awards. She won the same award at the 2011 British Blues Awards, and the Songwriter of the Year award for "Same as It Never Was", from Diamonds in the Dirt.

Now Taylor has a new album titled Nobody’s Fool. The first single from the album is Just No Getting Over You ( Dream Cruise). So check it out today.

Good evening ladies and gentlemen. We still have blues artists with us today playing that old guy blues. That old Cheatin and lying blues. That old down home blues.

Today’s topic is Keb’ Mo’. Kevin Roosevelt Moore. He’s a blues musician and five - time Grammy Award winner. He is a singer, guitarist, and songwriter, living in Nashville, Tennessee. His Genres are Delta Blues, Country Blues, and Americana.

An example of one of his songs go like this: “I ain’t got no woman, but I don’t feel sad.” And he’s playing the guitar. The name of Keb Mo’s song is titled, Dirty Low Down and Bad.

It is said that Keb Mo has been a star for decades, but achieved little recognition until he was in his forties. Today he’s in his 70’s. He has an album out called “Good to Be”.

So if you’re wondering if there are any blues artists today, check out Keb Mo. He sings the kind of blues you’re looking for.

Singing about the good old days. How everybody gets together to have those Summertime cookouts. Remembering the old time religion. Wishing he could go back - throw back.

JR Blue!
Singer, Songwriter, and record producer. According to his artist’s bio, he has helped to shape the sound called NEW OLD SCHOOL. He’s often compared to some of the greats, like Smokey Robinson. JR Blue is that rare instance of a rhythm and blues yet soul talent sharpening over time.

One of the songs that caught my ear from him is titled Throw Back. JR is wishing he could go back - throw back to a simpler day. To a simpler time. I wish that too. It’s a song that certainly made me think back while JR was singing, remembering, and wishing.

Keisa Brown was in the blues house. She said she never thought she’d miss him so. She said every time she met somebody, saw somebody, greeted somebody, (sing) they remind me of you.

They Remind Me of you. Keisa Brown. That’s today’s topic.

You might remember Keisa Brown by her song, Some Bridges Need Burning. (Sing) She was born in Jackson, Mississippi in 1947. As a young girl, she and her family moved to Chicago, where she got her start singing in school and church choirs according to Malaco Records. She had a powerful voice and it caught the ear of a music producer at a talent show. After that, she relocated to Los Angeles to further her career.

Keisa Brown sang backing vocals for singers like Tina Turner and Patti Labelle just to name a few. In 1999, Brown joined the Malaco Records roster where she collaborated with Fredrick Knight on The Keisa Brown Collection.

Brown has several songs on her collection album that I like.

Today’s Topic: Mr. Sipp and his song, “Too Much Water”

Castro Coleman aka Mr. Sipp. The Mississippi Blues Child. He’s a blues and gospel singer. Also a musician, songwriter, and guitarist. Mr. Sipp was the 2014 International Blues Challenge winner. His name Mr. Sipp is short for Mississippi. That’s where he’s from carrying on the legacies like Muddy Waters, BB King, and Howlin’ Wolf. They were also from Mississippi.

Mr. Sipp’s song “Too Much Water” is about him moving on and no more fussing and fighting with his woman. She wants to give their relationship another shot, but he thinks they are better off if they were just friends, and he couldn’t get over what she did. Too much water under the bridge.

The song “Too Much Water” comes from Mr. Sipps 2015 album. The Mississippi Blues Child. The Mississippi Blues Child is himself. Mr. Sipp is a great blues man with a passion of playing the guitar along with his friend Dexter Allen.

Mr. Sipp believes that Blues and gospel are like cousins; that they are similar. His friend Dexter Allen explains that in the gospel you’re speaking about a deliverer, and in the blues you just want to be delivered.

Dexter and Sipp both have gospel backgrounds. It’s not hard to feel what Mr. Sipp is singing about when he sings , “Too Much Water”. That’s what we want and need in music. You can feel the sound of what is being played.

Today’s topic is Cocaine Annie by GaryB.B. Coleman (Singing)

And that’s what Gary B. B. Coleman’s story was about. It went something like that. Cocaine Annie is the final studio album by Coleman. He issued Cocaine Annie on his own imprint called Boole Boo. The album was re-released in 1994 by Icehouse Records. The album includes two covers by Albert King, “Personal Manager” and “Answer to the Laundromat Blues”.

Coleman was born in Paris, Texas. He was working alongside Freddie King by the age of 15. He later supported Lightning’ Hopkins in concert and went on to form his own group.In 1985, he created his own independent record label, Mr. B’s Records, and issued a single, “ One Eyed Woman”, and his debut album, Nothing but the Blues, the following year. The album proved to be popular.

Coleman wrote material for others and sometimes played guitar and keyboards on their records.

Coleman’s song, Cocaine Annie is a song that keeps you listening. It’s telling you - you have got to beware of someone like Cocaine Annie or you’ll have nothing. Someone like Cocaine Annie is nothing but trouble.

Otis was asked what his reaction was when songs he did were covered by other artists.

He said, “I think it was some form of flattery.”

Bob Seger sang Otis Clay’s biggest hit and Bob’s version was the most successful version of the song. It was the song titled, “Tryin’ to Live My Life Without You”. The song was popularized by Otis Clay. It is said that he never hit as big as Ottis Redding, Wilson Pickett, or even Al Green.

Clay was an R&B and soul singer, who started in gospel music. In 2013, Clay was inducted to the Blues Hall of Fame.

Clay’s song, I Die a Little Each Day” is the song I like. It is a song that was released in 1972. It was written by Don Bryant and on the HI Records label. A legendary Memphis rockabilly and soul label founded by Ray Harris in 1957.

Otis may not have been as big as some of the other artists like Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, and Al Green, but he was great. His songs were awesome, and he was a great singer who lived to get 73. Otis Clay passed away in 2016. He was born in Waxhaw, Mississippi.

Tryin’ to Love Two was a hit song by R&B singer William Bell in 1977. Released from his album, Coming Back for More, it would become his biggest hit, reaching number one on the R&B charts and crossing over to the pop charts, reaching number ten on the Billboard Hot 100.[1] It would eventually sell over a million singles. The single was written and produced by William Bell and Paul Mitchell.

William Bell has a down home Southern soul style. He had real talent. “Trying to Love two” probably tells the story of what’s going on in some lives today. It’s a true song. I remember hearing the song when I was a little girl. Something about the music would put you in a certain mood. It’s just something about it. The music and words are both speaking I guess you could say. The song,“Trying to Love Two is a classic. It’s what you call good old school music, and people are still listening to this song today. It may be an old-fashioned song, but the truth in it still stands. People are still standing with it singing, Trying to love two ain’t easy to do.

The Chokin’ Kind by Joe Simon. It’s a 1967 song, written by Harlan Howard. The original version of the tune was released by Waylon Jennings.

The song was recorded by Joe Simon in 1969 and was his first number one on the US R&B chart, where it stayed for three weeks. It was also Joe Simon’s first top twenty entry on the pop singles chart. Simon received the 1970 Grammy Award for Best R&B Vocal Performance, Male for this song.

His version is the soulful version. The Chockin Kind became the song’s best version & biggest chart success. It sold over a million copies. On the US Pop Charts it reached #13 and #17 in Canada. Though he had two other #1 songs, this would be Joe’s biggest hit.

I enjoy listening to Joe Simmons version of the song, Chockin’ Kind. He left us in 2021 at age 85. In 2021, he was one of the 60 nominees for the National Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame.

Bobby “Blue” Bland put my feelings in a song. He explains how it feels when you loose someone. The blues is alright because you can sing how you feel. It’s about feelings. You’ve Got To Hurt Before You Heal.

Bland developed a sound that mixed gospel with the blues and R&B. He was described as "among the great storytellers of blues and soul music. He was sometimes referred to as the "Lion of the Blues" and as the "Sinatra of the Blues".[3] His music was also influenced by Nat King Cole.

Bland was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 1981, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992, and the Memphis Music Hall of Fame in 2012.

The Lion of Blues song “Hurt Before You Heal” is a song that can fit the mood sometimes that I’m in. The song has a lot of meaning. I appreciate the message & the many songs that Bobby Blue Bland has left us. Bland left us in 2013 at the age of 83. His birth name was Robert Calvin Brooks.

Hello! I’m Gail Nobles on Podcast and Blues. There was an announcement that Wendell Pierce best known for his work on “The Wire” will play as blues legend B.B. King in a biopic.

Pierce said according to Rolling Stone, “ We are official. Preparation has begun on a film where I will be honored to play the great B.B. King. Humbled. I promised B.B. King before he died, I will honor him and his creative genius. An American Icon.

I remember Pierce from the Ray Charles movie starring Jamie Foxx. Pierce is a very good actor, and I would love to see him play as B.B. King. He has the look and personality, and I believe he can portray him well.

Pierce has been in over 30 films, appeared in nearly 50 television shows, and has performed in dozens of stage productions. He worked on the HBO dramas The Wire and Treme.

Who knows? When Pierce is finished with the B.B. King biopic, it might become the greatest film he has ever made.

According to Rolling Stone, the project was first announced in 2011, but went dark following a legal dispute. The name of the movie is “The Thrill Is On”.
It is a dramatized version of a real-life friendship story.

Pierce said: The friendship of 2 musicians, one being the king of the blues.

It is said that King’s estate has clarified that there are two separate projects in the works concerning king. “The Thrill Is On” which is not associated with the estate, and an upcoming biopic of King’s life, which is produced by the estate.

Todays topic on Podcast and Blues is Johnny Adams.

Johnny Adams is a blues, jazz, and gospel singer, known as “ The Tan Canary”. for the multi-active range of his singing voice, his swooping vocal mannerisms and falsetto. His biggest hits were his versions of “Release Me” and “Reconsider Me” in the late 1960s. When I heard Johnny sing Release Me, in my book, he’s a country singer too. The song came from his album “Heart and Soul” on side one. It was released in 1969 by SSS International. The record was produced by Shelby Singleton and contains much of Adams’ 1960s output. SSS stands for Shelby Sumpter Singleton.

In 1968, Singleton signed Johnny Adams. He is a soul singer with a remarkable voice. The song Release Me had little success until Johnny signed with Singleton and reissued it on the SSS International label. This time, it reached #34 R&B and #82 pop when issued at the end of 1968. For a follow up, he tried another country song “Reconsider Me” with Shelby Singleton producing and Adams going through an amazing vocal workout which reached #8 R&B & #28 Pop.

Today’s topic: Son House, Father of the Delta Blues. He would sing songs like … “Grinnin’ In Your Face”.

Son House was a delta blues singer and guitarist, and he didn’t have a lot of music like singers today. That’s kind of what Delta Blues is. It’s one of the earliest - known styles of blues. It originated in the Mississippi Delta, and is regarded as a regional variant of country blues. Guitar and harmonica are its dominant instruments. Vocal styles in Delta blues range from introspective and soulful to passionate and fiery.

After years of hostility to secular music, as a preacher and for a few years also working as a church pastor, House turned to blues performance at the age of 25. He developed his musicianship to the point that Charley Patton, the foremost blues artist of the Mississippi Delta region, invited him to share engagements and to accompany him to a 1930 recording session for Paramount Records.

Issued at the start of the Great Depression, the records did not sell and did not lead to national recognition.

In 1964, a group of young record collectors discovered House, whom they knew of from his records issued by Paramount and by the Library of Congress. With their encouragement he relearned his repertoire and established a career as an entertainer, performing for young, mostly white audiences in coffeehouses, at folk festivals and on concert tours during the American folk music revival,billed as a “folk blues” singer. He recorded several albums, and some informally taped concerts have also been issued as albums. House died in 1988. In 2017, his single “Preachin’ the Blues” was inducted in to the Blues Hall of Fame.

Today’s topic is Terrence Davis. R&B Soul! Step Out!

Terrence Davis is a music artist producer who has been in the music over 25 years. He has a single titled, Step Out. When I listen to the song, I love what I hear. The song is a party song. It makes you want to get up and dance. I love the voices. Oh Oh Oh Oh! And I love how Terrence Davis comes in to sing: I got cha movin’. I gotcha Groovin’. There is some rap lyrics to the song too. The song is well put together.

Terrence I believe is a party man. He’s got another song called Red Cup. That’s a party song too. Terrence sings his songs like he actually lived them and makes you visualize the stories that he tells with his music. Before you know it, you’re up and dancing. That’s the kind of songs I like.

Terrence has a lot of soul in his R&B. Contemporary R&B I think. He’s got rhythm and blues with a hip hop mixture. There’s nothing wrong with that. People like to dance, and Terrence’s song “Step Out” is perfect for a dance song.

Johnnie Taylor was a recording artist and songwriter who performed a wide variety of genres, from blues, rhythm and blues, soul, and gospel to pop, doo-wop, and disco.

I want to talk about Johnnie’s song, Everything Is Out In the Open. The song was on the label Malaco Records. It was released in 1988. When I hear the song, I hear blues, rhythm and blues, and soul. It’s a beautiful song.

It was sampled by a rapper named BonSoul and another rapper named PMM. I’m not familiar with them but they must have thought that it was a great song too.

The song is about two people that were together in love but there were disappointments and it got all out in the open. The two lovers that were joined together before a judge were taken apart. According to the lyrics, it sounds like a married couple.

The song, “Everything’s Out In The Open” is a great song for blues. It can reach someone that is going through divorce and lovers that are not married too. When everything gets out in the open, everybody’s whispering and everybody knows.

Etta’s deep and earthy voice bridged the gap between rhythm and blues and rock and roll. She won six Grammy Awards and 17 Blues Music Awards. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999, and the Blues Hall of Fame in 2001.

Roy Roberts is like the BB King of our time. He knows about the early style of blues like the music of BB King and Muddy Waters. You can hear it when he sings and plays guitar. If you want to learn how to sing and play the blues, Roy Roberts is the man to learn from.

In my opinion, he’s the best when it comes to the early style of blues. The kind of songs I’ve heard Roberts sing is what I think of when I think of blues. The true blues. Blues that you sing when you’re down and out. Blues that you sing with feeling. Roy is that rhythm and blues entertainer. I don’t know too many singers today like him. Roy Roberts is the Bluesman. The soulful bluesman and can play a guitar with soul. He hasn’t won numerous awards for nothing.

Sometimes you might get a little bit tired of hearing the same Christmas songs every year. If you want to hear some soul blues Christmas songs,, check out the original Santa Clause song by Albert King on Spotify. Santa Claus Wants Some Loving.

Albert was a blues guitarist and singer. It is said that he stated in interviews that he was half-brother of BB King but documentation suggest otherwise. He also used the same nickname as BB king “ Blues Boy” and he named his guitar Lucy ( BB king’s guitar was named Lucille). BB was bothered by Albert saying he was his brother until he got to know him and realized he was right. He wasn’t his brother in blood but in blues.

Albert sure did remind me of BB King a lot when I first saw him. I often wondered if they were related. I’ve seen them perform once together on an award show singing, Let The Good Times Roll. They certainly did look and sound alike.

Albert King’s record Santa Claus Wants Some Loving is on the Stax record label. It was released in 1974. The Genre is funk/soul. It’s a very good Christmas song. It puts you in a happy mood. Robert Hicks better known as Barbecue Bob. A cookin man! A musician man! Born Sept. 11, 1902. Died young at age 29 on Oct. 21, 1931. But he was born in Walnut Grove, Georgia. His parents, Charlie and Mary Hicks, were farmers. He and his brother, Charlie Hicks, together with Curley Weaver, were taught how to play the guitar by Curley's mother, Savannah "Dip" Weaver. Bob began playing the 6-string guitar but picked up the 12-string guitar after moving to Atlanta, Georgia, in 1924. He became one of the prominent performers of the newly developing Atlanta blues style.

In Atlanta, Hicks worked at various jobs, playing music on the side. While working at Tidwells' Barbecue in a north Atlanta suburb, he came to the attention of Columbia Records talent scout Dan Hornsby. Hornsby recorded him and used Hicks's job to publicize his records, having Hicks pose in chef's whites and hat for publicity photos and dubbing him "Barbecue Bob".Before his death in 1931, he married a woman named Claudine and lived off Hillard Street in Atlanta.

Today on Podcast and Blues, I’ll be talking about Eric Gales, a blues rock guitarist.

Gales picked up the guitar at age four. He was taught songs and licks when he was young, in the style of Jim Hindrex, Albert King, B.B. King and others. In 1985, Gates began to play at blues competitions with his brother Eugene backing him on bass. Although Gales plays a right-handed guitar “upside-down” ( with the bass E string on the bottom), he was taught by his brother, who is left-handed, and never second-guessed the untraditional technique.

In late 1990, Eric and Eugene Gales signed with Elektra Records. Eric has done a lot in his career. One of his songs say …

“All I want to do is play my guitar. I come a long way.”

But Eric’s grandfather played with Howlin’ Wolfe. He has a musical family, and he’s also musical.

Eric said, “Things are going really good.”

I was looking at the years and all the albums Eric made. He has been busy in his music through the years, and looks like he has an album out now titled Crown. The album cover looks awesome, and his song, I Want My Crown sounds nice.

Betty Jean Champion known as Bettye Swann is a retired singer. Betty added an E to her first name to be different some say, and her last name was changed to Swann. When I hear Bettye sing, I hear soul blues. She took beautiful pictures, and her image made beautiful record covers. Bettye’s voice made beautiful records. I couldn’t find a picture of Bettye that I could use for the podcast. So I made up an image pertaining to her name using free images.

Bettye is best known for her 1967 hit song “Make Me Yours”. But I love “Sweet Dreams”. Make Me Yours topped the Billboard R&B charts. Bettye sang a lot of great songs, but some songs didn’t make it. Some failed the charts. It is said that it was because of lack of support. Swann left three record companies. Money Records, Capital Records, & Atlantic Records. She retired, changed her name to Betty Barton, and became a Jehovah’sWitness.

I’m glad that Bettye’s songs can still be heard. I’m glad she sang them. All of them. Every one of them. Bettye had a great gift. When you get into the music business with that gift, the business can be tough and unfair. But a singer can still be a singer.

Bettye Swann is a great singer. It is her gift from God. I don’t know if she had thought to make a business of her own in singing, but she was blessed to get as far as she did, and I’m glad. Her voice and music on record teaches what real songs and singing is all about like the record Sweet Dreams. She’s singing about someone she can’t forget, and the one she’s in love with doesn’t feel the same. He’s someone she should hate, but instead she’s always having sweet dreams of him.

Roy Gaines! You know what he said?

Roy: I’ll be a blues man for life.

Now Roy is saying that he can be badder than bad. Treat him right. Just look for Roy Gaines Badder Than Bad (Live) on Spotify.

Gaines is a renowned legendary Blues Artist born in Watson, Texas. He is the younger brother of the blues musician Grady Gaines.

Gaines can really play a guitar. He was moved to playing the guitar in his adolescence. In his teens he was aquatinted with the guitarist Johnny Copeland. By the age of 14, Roy had performed onstage backing his hero, T-Tone Walker, and played in Houston nightclubs. He later moved to Los Angeles California. Gaines played as a backing musician on recordings by other well known artists like Bobby Bland and Big Mama Thornton.

Roy has the old time blues sound. (Singing) ….

You can’t help but listen to him sing. It’s like hearing somebody warning somebody that’s it’s gonna be a show down if they don’t do right.

Jaybird Coleman was a country blues harmonica player, vocalist, and guitarist. He was a popular musical attraction throughout Alabama and recorded several sides in the late 1920s and 1930’s.

Coleman was born to a family of sharecroppers in Gainesville, Alabama. While he and his three brothers endured hard physical labor, he was exposed to musical influences from his fellow sharecroppers in singing and discovering traditional folk songs. At age 12, he was introduced to the harmonica.

In 1914 upon the outbreak of the First World War, Coleman joined the United States Army.

In 1922, Jaybird Coleman teamed up with the singer and guitarist Big Joe Williams in tours across Alabama.

In 1926, Coleman began recording. His records were met with commercial success. By the end of the 1940’s, Jaybird Coleman disappeared from the music scene. He died of cancer on Jan. 28, 1950 in Tuskegee Alabama.

Coleman’s Recordings like “No More Good Water” was unlike the kind of blues that you hear today. It didn’t have a whole lot of music. Just singing and harmonica, and the song was filled with words of feeling and experience. Things that probably actually happened.

Good evening! This Sunday evening I’m here to talk about a blues musician whose name is Taj Mahal. He plays the guitar, piano, banjo, harmonica, and many other instruments. This Sunday evening, you may be listening for the gospel but Taj Mahal knows about that too. There is one song that I have seen his name on as an arranger titled Will the Circle Be Unbroken. The song is by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band featuring Taj Mahal.

Mahal has done much to reshape the definition and scope of blues music over the course of his more than 50 year career by fusing it with nontraditional forms, including sounds from the Caribbean, Africa, India, Hawaii, and the South Pacific.

Mahal was born Henry Saint Claire Fredericks, Jr. on May 17, 1942, in Harlem, Manhattan, New York City, New York. Growing up in Springfield, Massachusetts, he was raised in a musical environment: his mother was a member of a local gospel choir and his father, Henry Saint Claire Fredericks Sr., was an Afro-Caribbean jazz arranger and piano player. His family owned a shortwave radio which received music broadcasts from around the world, exposing him at an early age to world music. Today Taj Mahal is a blues musician, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, actor, and film composer.

Sonny Green. Found! One Soul Singer. Those are the big bold words I see written on his album. It is believed that he is one of the best soul singers alive. Sonny is Modern Day Soul Blues and he’s in his 70’s. He’s got to know a lot about the blues. It is said that he’s been singing since his teens in Louisiana. Sonny recorded a handful of sought after killer 45’s during the late 60’s and early 70’s. You should hear him now and hear what’s new. Sonny can tell a story and sing with a soulful voice.

I’m taking you back to the old blues. LaVern Baker was an R&B singer who had several hit records on the pop chart in the 1950s and early 1960s. Her most successful records were "Tweedle Dee" (1955), "Jim Dandy" (1956), and "I Cried a Tear" (1958).

Now lets talk about Jim Dandy sometimes known as (Jim Dandy to the Rescue) It’s a song written by Lincoln Chase, and was first recorded by LaVern Baker in 1956. It reached the top of the R&B chart and #17 on the pop charts in the United States. It was named one of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll and was ranked #352 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

The song is about a man name (Jim Dandy) who rescues women from improbable or impossible predicaments. It proved popular enough that Chase wrote a second song for Baker entitled "Jim Dandy Got Married.”

And you know what Jim Dandy means. It means a fine, outstanding, excellent person. I must say LaVern Baker was a beautiful, outstanding, and excellent singer on the label of Atlantic Records. Baker was born Delores Evans in Chicago.

In the old days, the blues was sorrow. It meant being down and out. In music, we have heard the sad songs about being in love having so much trouble. Today, I can hardly tell what blues is in music. There are so many styles of music when it comes to the blues. When I think of the blues, I think of - of corse the blues musician and singer like BB King. And then I think of Otis Redding, Motown, and Star. Blues music has changed a lot over the years from the time of someone like BB King.

The Blues is feeling. The blues is how you feel. It doesn’t always mean sorrow and crying about a man or a woman. There’s happy blues and swinging blues too. (Singing)

Today’s topic is Calvin Richardson. In 2009, he was chosen to record a tribute album to Bobby Womack. (Singing)

Calvin Richardson sings Bobby Womack’s song Harry Hippie. He has the right voice for Bobby Womack’s songs. As I was saying in 2009, he was chosen to record a tribute album to Womack, which was coincided with Womack being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The Grammy nominated album was entitled, Facts of Life: The Soul of Bobby Womack.

Calvin released his debut solo album Country Boy in 1999. He is also known by the nickname “Prince of Soul”. Richardson released a 2nd and 3rd album after that. He’s he guy to listen to if you appreciate real deep soul blues.

It was old-school artists that influenced Calvin like Al Green, Marvin Gaye, Same Cooke, and of course Bobby Womack. Old-school artists can really bring out the best in a singer, and I think that’s what happened to Calvin. You can learn from old-school. The old-school teaches what is missing today. When Calvin was chosen to make a tribute album to Bobby Womack, they chose the right guy. He has a lot of soul. We need more talent like Calvin Richardson. Intro

Today’s topic is Christone “Kingfish” Ingram.
We always dig back through records and think of artist such as BB King, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, and Howlin’ Wolfe when we think of the blues. We have the blues soul artist of yesterday, but we also have some modern blues soul artists of today like Kingfish.

Christone “Kingfish” Ingram was born Jan. 19, 1999. He is 22 years old today. He is a blues guitarist and singer from Clarksdale, Mississippi who became a well - known performer as a teenager. Kingfish has recorded with other artist such as Buddy Guy, Eric Gales, and Keb Mo.

When I saw Kingfish video “Fresh Out” (featuring Buddy Guy), I was blown away. Impressed. If you haven’t heard or seen Kingfish perform, you’ve got to hear him.

Kingfish became interested in the blues around age 5 when his father showed him a PBS documentary about Muddy Waters. He was taught how to play by Bill Howl-N-Madd Perry and Richard “Daddy Rich” Crisman at the arts and education program of the museum. Those two Gus taught him well.

Kingfish plays like a blues man that’s been playing the blues for years. If somebody would have blindfolded me from seeing his face, I would have thought he was at least fifty years of age singing and playing guitar. But he’s only 22.

I think about all of the old legends that have passed and gone. Music is not the same without them. They wrote and sang and played music from the heart. Otis Redding told us what to do.

Otis lived his words and was able to record them and put them into songs. Today it's all about throwing words together. It's like there's no life behind the words. There's no real pain and heartache to be able to add feeling. When you've actually lived something, it's easier to write and express it. Songs aren't always easy to write. I think the more you love and learn about life, the more great songs can be written. The more singers can sing. But you know, that's just may opinion. It can be fact. The legends did not become legends for nothing. They had charisma.

Hi, I'm Gail Nobles, and today's topic is Michael Burks. Michael Burks was an electric blues and soul blues guitarist, singer, and songwriter. He is best known for his tracks, "Everybody's Got Their Hand Out", "I Smell Smoke", and "Hard Come, Easy Go". ... (singing)

Michael worked with Johnnie Taylor. Burks was known as "Iron Man" for his energetic and passion filled performances on stage. He was nominated five times for a Blues Music Award, and in 2004, Living Blues presented him with the Critics' Award for Best Guitarist.

Burks was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and had a musical heritage. His father played the bass guitar, and performed with Sonny Boy Williamson II, and his grandfather played in a delta blues style.

Like Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, Peggy Scott Adams and Jo Jo Benson were a great singing duo in soul blues. In the 60's, Peggy Scott teamed with Jo Jo Benson to record 3 million selling songs.

One of my favorite songs from the duo is Magic Fingers. It's an uplifting song with a story. I like the song because it makes you listen to a story about coming trouble, and then things take a turn for the better. The song Magic Fingers doesn't explain who the magic fingers are. The words are left to the listeners to determine what magic fingers may mean to them.

Bigg Robb started in the music industry as a teenager disc jockey at a small radio station in Cincinnati, Ohio, in the late 70's. Through the early 80's he stayed in radio, focusing on soul and funk artists such as Bootsy Collins, Midnight Star, Zapp, and other greats of the era, often interviewing them on his shows. Robb would hang out with the soul and funk stars in recording studios. A man by the name of Roger Troutman, a member of his band Zapp encouraged Robb to record his own music.

Today, Bigg Robb is recording his own music. He has recorded some great Southern Soul music. Robb has recorded a lot of music. He's available on Spotify. It all started with two guys named Rosco and Willie. They brought back real music into their community. There wasn't much going on and times were tough. People were trying to make it. Rosco and Willie had just got out of the military. They were like brothers. Rosco was short and Willie was tall. Rosco and Willie started a radio show called Blues 57.

Willie: Rosco! What you got in that shed? It looks like a big old barn house back there. Got an upstairs too. What's in there!

Rosco: Ain't nothing in there man but a lot of old 45's and albums. It's where I hang out when I get the blues.

Willie: Is that right? 45's and albums? The blues? Wait a minute now Rosco! What have we been trying to do?

Rosco: We've been trying to start our own business.

Willie: Well that old shed you got could be our start. We could make it our own radio station.

Rosco: I don't know about that Willie.

Willie: C'mon now man! Think about our community. Ain't a lot going on for the African Americans right now. Think about it. Think about our culture. And music has died! We could be the outlet to reach our community. We could have big entertainers on our show. Little ones too. We got people right here in the community with talent.

Rosco: Yea, we could have something for the church. We could play Spirituals and Rhythm and Blues. I've got all kinds of records in that shed. People still love the old music too.

Willie: Well, let's get started man. All we need is some radio equipment. And we can call our show Blues 57 because anyone that's trying to be heard is gonna fly high.

Rosco: And we can call the radio WRBS.

Willie: What that stand for Rosco?

Rosco: Willi Rosco Blues Station. Now where we gonna get that equipment from?

Willie and Rosco got their radio equipment little bit by little bit. They kept working on their dream and soon they were on the air.

Willie: Rosco, I think we're on the air.

Rosco: We can't have no static now Willie.

Willie: This is Willie and Rosco on WRBS.

Good evening. Today's topic is prison blues. Work songs that the chain gang sang.

A chain gang is a group of prisoners chained together to perform menial or physically challenging work as a form of punishment. Such punishment might include repairing buildings, building roads, or clearing land.

The song I'm about to play is a negro prison song from The Mississippi State Penitentiary called "Old Alabama". This is a historical recording from Parchman Farm 1947 Recorded by Dr. Harry Oster

Hello Everyone! I'm Gail Nobles and I hope you're enjoying Podcast and Blues. Before I get started, I would like to say that there are different categories of blues. There is Country Blues, Chicago Blues, Soul Blues, and all types of blues.

I remember when I first heard the music artist Sheryl Crow singing, "All I Wanna Do Is Have Some Fun". When I first heard that song, it sounded like a country and blues song to me. The way she plays her guitar and the way she tells her story in a a song.

Here's a blues song by a music artist named Snowflake. Her song is titled, "A Foolish Game". It's a timeless blues classic featuring Admiral Bob. ....

Cassie CJ Fox is so lucky. She can play all those great soul blues songs. I'm not allowed to play the songs. So I have to make bells and whistle sounds, and sing a little bit so you can know the tune. That's one difference between podcasting and radio. I don't believe that either one of them is easy to do.

Today I heard Cassie playing a song I've never heard. It's a song by an artist name Marie Queenie Lyons. The title of the song is, "Daddy's House. Marie is the Queen of Ashtabula soul and funk. Ashtabula is a city in Ashtabula County, Ohio. Marie started performing as a teen in local clubs. James Brown got her connected with King Records. After just one album (Soul Fever), Marie Queenie Lyons vanished. I'm hoping she's somewhere enjoying her life and doing well.

I'm glad Cassie CJ Fox played Marie's song today. The song Stay Away From Daddy's House is a song about somebody's life out there. Cassie plays real music. From 3 to 6 PM, you can hear Cassie CJ Fox on ourgenerationradio.com. Soul of the Blues on Sundays.

Today on Podcast and Blues, I'm going to play a musical movie titled "Crossroads Blues". It is based on the legends of the black guitarist Robert Johnson who died mysteriously in 1938. Its a pact with the devil there. One night, at the crossroads, a man forces the fate and sells his soul to the devil in exchange for glory. The fame arrives fast, but it contains a curse. Robert Johnson dies after the recording of 29 songs. The legend says that there would be a thirtieth place. Whoever will find it will become immensely rich and will release Johnson of his pact. Peter died on October 5th 2019. He left us with interviews with musicians like Muddy Waters.

Some legends are living through their children like Muddy Waters. You can hear him in his son's singing voice who's name is Mud Morganfield. Mr. Morganfield said that when he's up on stage, he always feels his pops is there with him.

Mud Morganfield made an album performing several Muddy Water Songs. The name of the album is titled, For Pops: A Tribute to Muddy Waters. In May 2015, his album won a Blues Music Award in the Traditional Blues Album Category.

Mr. Morganfield carries on, and not only does he keep his father's music alive, but he keeps the blues music alive as himself. He's Mud Morganfield. You've heard his father Muddy Waters, and now you can hear the son. For those of you that do not know the father can know the son and what real blues music is all about.

Like Mud Morganfield, you can keep on living this life that teaches a song. A song about ups and a song about downs. Stick around with Mud Morganfield. The waters won't always be unclear. Keep on moving. Don't let the puddles of life get you down. As you walk through, keep singing the Blues with Mud Morganfield.

Billy "Big Daddy" Cade played all over the country at festivals and concerts. He is a BB King Tribute Artist and sounds a lot like the king. Mr. Cade has performed as himself and as B.B. King playing the blues. He's a great guitarist.

Cade has a wife name Bootsy because she owns so many boots, and she performs with Cade according to the news. Big Daddy Cade has his own name, but he has the looks, voice, and guitar style like BB King. If you watch him on stage, you may forget that he's Daddy Cade while you are reminded of BB King.
