- 123 - 122. The Latino Mindset
We’re diving into the toxic mindset that stops so many of my Latino friends from learning to speak English proficiently. I’m going to talk about cultural stigmas, mental rigidity, self-esteem, and how all of these things have a major influence on your ability to learn and grow as an English speaker (and a human being). If you can make the corrections that I suggest in this episode, you’ll be putting yourself on the path to proficiency in this language. You’ll realize that no matter what goal you’re trying to achieve, it all starts with having the proper mindset!

In this episode, we’re talking about the profound impact of habits on the course of one's life. The results we experience in various aspects of life, such as finance and fitness, are often delayed reflections of our habits. But the thought of forming new and healthier habits is often very daunting because we typically imagine the herculean effort we're going to have to make in order to form those habits. — However, with the help of James Clear (author of the book ‘Atomic Habits’), I'm going to expose you to a concept that might change the way you think about forming simple habits that will have a massive impact on your future.

Wed, 07 Aug 2024 - 30min - 108 - 107. Americans Should Pay More
If you’ve ever traveled to a foreign country, then you may have experienced the manipulative pricing schemes that many people use to take advantage of customers who aren’t familiar with the way things work in that country. In many places, it’s common practice to charge tourists up to 10 times the price that a local would pay for the same products or services, especially if the tourists come from North American or European countries. — In this episode, I’ll speak about the practicality and morality of such pricing schemes, and why I think they’re a bad idea.

Sun, 04 Aug 2024 - 36min - 107 - 106. Over-functioning Parents
Being a parent is one of the many things in life that doesn’t come with an instruction manual. So naturally anyone who decides to become a parent is bound to make mistakes with the kids at some point. I don't have kids, but I have to imagine that as a parent, you're making mistakes all the time. — I mean, as a human, we're making mistakes all the time so I'm sure there's no difference.
One of the most detrimental mistakes that I've seen countless times and also experienced myself is what some people might call over-functioning for one’s children.
Over-functioning is basically doing things for your children that they can do for themselves. Some people say they do it out of love, others do it out of fear, but at the end of the day, constantly doing things for people that they can do for themselves isn't always a simple act of kindness. Sometimes you can train those people to be so dependent on you that they can't do anything for themselves. And that's not good for anyone.
So in today's episode, we're going to listen to a short clip from a conversation about this topic and I'll be here to explain all the nouns, verbs, and adjectives and then I’ll leave you with something to think about.

Wed, 03 Jul 2024 - 11min - 98 - 97. Your Teacher Is Lying to You
There are many great English teachers out there, but the sad truth is that some are just looking to profit off your ignorance and insecurity. Instead of providing the tools you need to reach your goal, they sell you the dream of English fluency without effort. All you have to do is keep watching their videos and buy their overpriced courses.
It’s troubling that many language teachers spend little to no time talking about what languages are actually used for: communication. As a result, many English learners obsess over grammar, accents, and unnatural vocabulary, believing these are the keys to becoming great communicators. They've been misled into thinking that staying in their comfort zones and avoiding the truth is the most effective path to fluency. This couldn't be further from the truth.
In this episode, I want to simplify things for all English learners seeking practical solutions that won't waste their time or break the bank. With the help of Cristiano Ronaldo and Jimmy Carr, I'm going to show you the only thing you need to be fluent in English.

Mon, 01 Jul 2024 - 15min - 97 - 96. American Comedians You Should Know
If you know me, then you know that I have an extremely dark sense of humor and I love stand up comedy.
As a language learner, being able to understand jokes and cultural humor is a sign that you’ve reached a relatively advanced level because stand up comedy is heavily influenced by culture. So if you can understand not only the words being said, but also the reason that people find it funny, then you’ve got a pretty good understanding of both the language and the culture.
So this episode is for all of my stand up comedy lovers who want to put their English to the test and get more familiar with American culture. This list of comedians is in no particular order, by the way. You can also check the description of this episode for a link to a YouTube playlist with some of the comedy specials I’ll be mentioning today.

Mon, 10 Jun 2024 - 36min - 93 - 92. Modern Women's Dilemma
In her article titled "A Partial Explanation of Zoomer Girl Derangement,” writer Zinnia, talks about the changes girls go through as they become women, focusing on how society views them. She explains the mixed feelings girls have about getting attention from men, feeling both powerful and vulnerable. Zinnia also criticizes how social media and modern culture affect young women, making it hard for them to understand their worth. She suggests that girls need honest advice to balance their desires and the pressures they face as they grow up. In today’s episode, I’ll be reading the article to you and leaving you with something to think about.

Mon, 11 Dec 2023 - 12min - 66 - #66 - Why Are We Still Working?
The world we live in is very different from the world that Gen X-ers and Baby Boomers grew up in, and thus, the things we value and work for have changed substantially. In the past, people worked hard in the pursuit of owning their own homes, raising families, and retiring with enough money to enjoy their old age. But these days, the desire to own a home and raise children is lower than ever before. People don't want to dedicate 45 years of their life to a corporation, and they don't want to commit to 30-year mortgages or 18 years of childcare. So the question is... what exactly are we working for then?

Mon, 20 Nov 2023 - 52min - 63 - #63 - The Lost Art of Conversation
When was the last time you had a genuine conversation? Not a text chat or an email, but a real face-to-face, heart-to-heart conversation? It’s something that rarely happens these days, isn’t it?
People are busier, more immersed in the digital world, and more individualistic than ever before. Most of our interactions have been reduced to superficial, tweet-like sentences, emojis that display artificial emotions and reactions, and conversations that feel more like transactions than actual human connections.
In this episode, I’m going to explain how getting back to our roots and learning to communicate with others will make life better for all of us.

Mon, 13 Nov 2023 - 40min - 62 - #62 - "Gen Z is Lazy and Weak"
Gen Z are living through a major societal change, and it seems that most of them simply aren’t prepared for it. But who’s fault is that? Is this generation really just a bunch of lazy, weak, and entitled kids who think they deserve the world for free? Or is it possible that Millennials, Gen X-ers, and Baby Boomers have something to do with this?
In this episode, you’re going to hear Jonathan Haidt’s thoughts on how Gen Z came to be so relatively weak in comparison to their predecessors, as well as clip of a young lady who’s struggling to cope with the reality of being an adult nowadays.
This is such an important topic that’s relevant to all of us, and I hope this episode will spark interesting conversations about how we can support the future of our society.

Have you ever wondered why so many content creators who had built massive followings on YouTube and Instagram suddenly rushed to TikTok back in 2020?
Have you ever wondered why your experience on all of these platforms somehow gets worse and worse overtime?
You might say that too many old people started using Facebook so all of the young people left.
You might say that Amazon is just more convenient than any other online retailer.
You might say that TikTok’s algorithms are simply better and more effective than the ones on YouTube and Instagram.
And you might say that your online experience gets worse because there are too many ads and too many creators making the same trash content.
But is it really that simple? What if there was a predictable pattern that almost every online platform followed in the search for higher profits market control? What if you could take a look behind the curtain and see how these online platforms systematically kill competition and creativity… while forcing buyers and sellers, creators and consumers to participate in their little game of monopoly?
Well, in this episode, I’m going to read a brilliant article written by the author and journalist Cory Doctorow about the predictable ways that every online platform we know of eventually turns to shit.

The concept of the "looking glass self" is central to the field of sociology, particularly symbolic interactionism. Coined by Charles Horton Cooley in his work "Human Nature and the Social Order" (1902), the term captures the idea that our self-concept and self-worth are heavily influenced by how we perceive others to perceive us. There have been many discussions about modern laziness and short attention spans in the modern world. Many of us struggle with a lack of motivation and we’re more distracted than ever. Mon, 18 Sep 2023 - 1h 14min - 50 - #50 - The Harsh Reality of Making Life Decisions
I don’t know about you, but I’ve never taken a class on decision-making. My parents never sat me down and taught me how to think deeply about the consequences of my actions.
When it comes to making life choices, the only teacher I’ve ever had was life itself. I’ve made decisions, those decisions have had consequences, and then I’ve analyzed those consequences with the hopes that I’ll be able to make even better decisions in the future.
But I’m a human being… and naturally, I want to feel a sense of certainty that the decisions I make will lead to the outcomes I desire. — And I’m sure you’re no different.
How do I know if I’m making the right decision? How do I know if I should be persistent and keep moving toward my goal, or just quit and find something else to do?How do I know if I’m using my time in the best way possible? These are questions that all of us have asked or will ask ourselves at some point in life. And the harsh reality is that in most cases, the only person who can answer these question for us is the person we see in the mirror every morning.
But still, we continue to look to others for guidance, advice, and answers. — And in today’s episode, I’m gonna play a clip of a young lady looking for advice on how to know if she’s on the right path in life. — And the entrepreneur and content creator, Gary Vaynerchuk is going to share a perspective that I believe could help you to find some direction in your life as well.

Thu, 03 Aug 2023 - 35min - 43 - #43 - The Biggest Lie about Relationships
From a very young age we are told countless lies about the purpose of committed relationships, how those relationships are developed, and what it takes to maintain them overtime. It's only as we get older and start trying to develop our own relationships that we actually realize relationships are not what we read about in fairytales, or see in movies or on social media.
Unfortunately, many of us never had anyone to teach us about how committed relationships work and so we were forced to learn through sheer observation. However, many of us we never taught to observe properly so we end up misinterpreting many other things that we see and hear.
What's the biggest misconception about committed relationships today? What is it that so many of us get wrong when it comes to choosing a partner, developing a relationship, and setting expectations of that relationship?
In today's episode of real English radio, we’re gonna listen to a clip from a conversation between Brené Brown and Tim Ferris about what Brené believes to be the biggest lie we’re told about relationships and the change in thinking we all need to make if we want to sustain a healthy partnership with someone.

Wed, 12 Jul 2023 - 36min - 39 - #39 - Quiet People Have It Rough
A lot of people have a hard time dealing with silence, especially in the presence of another person. In many cultures, silence is viewed as a problem, a breakdown in communication, or a void that must be filled with some kind of noise. If the person we’re speaking with is silent too often or for too long, we tend to associate negative feelings with them such as boredom, awkwardness, and rejection. This episode will give you a different way to think about silence and help you to understand quiet people just a little bit better.

Many of us have a really hard time talking to women (or people in general). And although all of us struggle at different times and for different reasons, I think there are two main things that keep us from improving this crucial skill.
- A self-defeating mindsetA level of pride that keeps us from exiting our comfort zone and experiencing failure
So with the help of Charlie Houpert from Charisma on Command and the late, great Kevin Samuels, I'm going to share some ideas with you that will help you to develop the right mindset for communicating more effectively and find the source of motivation you need to step out of your comfort zone and learn a new skill.

Sun, 09 Jul 2023 - 46min - 37 - #37 - The Benefit of the Doubt
From the day we are born to the day we die, we’re faced with countless ambiguous situations that require us to use our logic rather than our emotions to interpret things properly and avoid unnecessary misunderstandings and conflicts.
Unfortunately, most of us have little knowledge about human psychology and how our brains tend to function and or malfunction. This lack of understanding often leads us to misinterpret many situations and develop negative feelings or opinions about the various people we come into contact with on a daily basis.
So today, we're going to dive deeper into this topic and discuss the power that your perception has over the way you experience life. — If you are at all interested in psychology, communication, or interpersonal relationships, then this episode is definitely for you!

When you can’t afford to pay for private English lessons, language exchanges are the next best way to learn a foreign language. Why? Because we learn a language to communicate with real people. So by practicing with real people every day, you’ll be learning both the language and the culture in one of the most authentic ways possible.
The problem is that finding (and keeping) a good language exchange partner online is one of the hardest things for an English learner to do. Now, I’m not an expert on the subject, but I do have some tips that will make the process a bit easier for you.
