Fri, 9 Aug 2024 - 22min - 222 - Greatest Hits Vol. 20 - Freedom to Change Your Mind
This week we talk about why we feel obligated to finish everything we start - even if we’re miserable in it. Careers, relationships, even small things like movies and a bad meal. Often it’s because we think changing our minds equals failure or some sort, but there are many others I’ll cover in this episode. I also share how we can make every choice worth it... even when that means walking away from something we’ve put a lot of time, money, and energy into. You will learn: // Why we force ourselves to complete something we’ve started – even if we hate it // How to decide whether to stick with it something // Whether the “right” decision exists (hint: no) // How to make every choice worth it – even if that choice is to walk away Resources: // Episode 8: How to Get Clear About What You Want // Episode 66: How to Fail Perfectly // Episode 121: Clarity Is a Decision // I’d love to hear from you! Fri, 2 Aug 2024 - 19min - 221 - Our True Self vs Our Self-Like Parts
This week we dive into the concept of Self-like parts - those parts of us that SEEM like well-intentioned, wise, compassionate parts of us, but that ultimately still feed the immature ego and false sense of self. We also explore the concept of Self in Internal Family Systems and how Buddhist philosophy can help us know when we’re driven by our True Self vs our Self-like parts. You will learn: // What the Self is and how it relates to the theory of Internal Family Systems… and our core essence // How self-like parts affect our Manager and Firefighter parts, and why they never actually help us as a result // The difference between self-like parts and our true Self and how to identify our self-like parts // Why true healing and development can only come from our true Self // How to build a mindful, compassionate relationship with our true Self AND our self-like parts. In this episode, we talk about our (very) human need to have healing move quickly… and how any person who has suffered and made a lot of progress can tell you that it takes patience and time. We’ll talk about how to hold realistic expectations for any “quick-fix” approaches you may try and the dangers of a quick-fix mindset. I’ll also give you some great ways we can all work to cultivate that necessary patience! You will learn: // Why it’s important to not give up hope if our old patterns recur // The dangers of a quick-fix mindset (they’re sneakier than you think) // Common misunderstandings about the speed at which psychedelic-assisted therapy and other therapeutic approaches can work // Why advanced methods of therapy or psychedelic substances alone won’t make the difference // How integration needs to happen beyond a few online sessions of group sharing // Why true lasting progress requires time and patience (and often, the help of a skilled professional or wise mentor) // How to cultivate patience on the path Resources: // Episode 63: Being Human Is Hard - The First Noble Truth // Episode 107: Equanimity in Everyday Life // Episode 161: Healing vs Curing // Episode 209: Ripening and the Inevitability of Our Awakening // I’d love to hear from you! Fri, 12 Jul 2024 - 15min - 218 - Wishlessness and Your Dreams
In this week’s episode, we talk about the culture of BIG manifestation, and how it can turn toxic. We’ll look at the importance of finding and accepting our own “enough” and how to sit in the moment and be present with the preciousness of life, exactly as it is right now. Plus, I’ll reveal an essential step to taking effective, healing action in these times - for ourselves AND our more-than-human world (hint - it’s not hustling or burning out on activism). You will learn: // How the culture of BIG manifestation can turn toxic // How to find and accept your “enough” // Why sitting in the moment can be WAY harder than daydreaming about what if… // The concept of wishlessness and how it can help us be present with the preciousness of life exactly as it is // How we can balance our goals and dreams… and what happens when we don’t // The key to taking effective, healing action - for ourselves AND our society Resources: // Episode 40: Desire and Attachment // Episode 69: Having Enough - Finding Your Balance // Episode 98: How to Stop Hustling // I’d love to hear from you! Fri, 5 Jul 2024 - 21min - 217 - True Elderhood No Matter Your Age
First, know that this episode is for people of all ages, because we are all elders to someone (there are always people younger than us!) and we are constantly having opportunities for growth in our spiritual maturity throughout our entire life. The concepts I introduce in this episode help shape how we age and the choices we make at all stages of life. Too often we believe that as we age, we should try to look, feel, and act as young as possible. But the truth is, that’s not the freaking point. We discuss a world where elders are seen as wisdom keepers, guides, and mentors for the community. Where they possess a deep knowledge and understanding that is invaluable to younger generations. This won’t just happen. We need to see this as our role to our people, and make our life decisions from that place. Instead of just sitting around and saving money to retire and travel, we can make our spiritual growth and maturity more intentional. We’ll jam on how we can continue to challenge the idea that aging is a period of decline, and talk about a few of the elders that I personally look up to and respect. You will learn: // Why thinking of true elderhood and spiritual maturity matters at ALL ages // How we often view elderhood vs what’s possible // Why taking responsibility for our spiritual maturity is crucial for playing an essential role in our communities // Why modern industrialized society doesn’t hold reverence or wisdom the possibilities in aging // Some examples of elders I deeply respect and look up to and the lessons they taught me // How we can continue to challenge the idea that aging is a period of decline // How spiritual maturity allows us to make our spiritual growth intentional AND still leaves plenty of room for fun and relaxation Resources: // Joanna Macy & her work // Dipa Ma & her work // Nature and the Human Soul, by Bill Plotkin // Episode 154: Off the Cushion - Activism + Spirituality // Episode 191: Soulcentric Adulthood // I’d love to hear from you! This week is a very special episode to help us continue to reduce the unnecessary suffering in our own lives - and in the lives of those we love. We’re going to talk about something we all find difficult in our relationships: the radical acceptance of other people’s shit. I’m going to share my own personal struggles with this and give you some ways that you can learn to accept how others act in a way that will bring you more compassion, love, and alignment. You will learn: // Why our loved ones often end up doing something that hurts us over and over (hint: it’s not because they’re being cruel) // Why we often get so upset and activated when dealing with the unreliability of others // How to deal with the disappointment of others that doesn’t create more suffering - for us or them Resources: // Episode 16: How to Improve Any Relationship // Episode 74: How to Set Healthy Boundaries // I’d love to hear from you! Fri, 21 Jun 2024 - 18min - 215 - Pau Hana - How to Detach From Work
This week we learn from Native Hawaiian wisdom in the concept of “pau kahana,” which means “the work is done” (most people simply say, “pau hana”). The concept of pau kahana is more than just stating a fact, like “I’m off work now.” I’ve noticed that my kanaka - Indigenous Hawaiian - friends create a very distinct separation between work and personal life. So it’s not just about stopping work, but also engaging in practices that help us release the day’s burdens and shift gears. It’s a holistic mental, physical, and spiritual detachment from work after the workday ends that also allows us to shed the day’s burdens and shift gears. We’ll explore how this Indigenous wisdom is so important in today’s modern society, where it’s so hard to unplug from the demands of a world where work is only a smartphone away. I’ll share lots of helpful ideas to start your own pau kahana practice, including clear boundaries, connection to nature, people, and play. You will learn: // How to counteract the pressures of modern industrialized society as work is increasingly enmeshed in our personal lives // What pau kahana means in Native Hawaiian culture… and how this Indigenous wisdom helps us release the day’s burdens // The physical and mental benefits of detaching from work at the end of each day // The key elements for creating our own ritual to help disengage from work Resources: // Episode 96: Unplugging in an Uncertain World // Episode 194: Work - Survival Dance or Sacred Offering // Episode 212: Privilege on the Spiritual Path // Donate to the Hawai’i People’s Fund - an excellent organization supporting Hawai’i based grassroots organizations and fighting systems of oppression // I’d love to hear from you! Fri, 14 Jun 2024 - 20min - 214 - Privilege on the Spiritual Path
This week we talk about how privilege allows us to take risks when pursuing our spiritual path and enlightenment, and how to mitigate that when we don’t have a lot of it. We also explore why privilege is not a guarantee of enlightenment - nor the lack of privilege an insurmountable barrier. I open up about my own privilege and hardships, and give some tips on how those who lack privilege can still proceed on their path with mindful, calculated risks. You will learn: // How privilege influences our journey toward enlightenment // The types of risk we can take when we have less privilege // Why privilege is not a guarantee of enlightenment - nor the lack of privilege an insurmountable barrier // The privilege to take risks - and how we can mitigate that when we have less available to us // Ways that a lack of privilege can be a catalyst for growth // How to maximize the privilege we do have Resources: // Episode 43: Jealousy and Sympathetic Joy // I’d love to hear from you! We’ll also share some tips to help navigate our edges when we come across them… and why it’s 100% worth it to get close to them in the first place. Plus we’ll jam on the importance of letting go of those who no longer nourish you and your practice… and how to do it. Fri, 24 May 2024 - 19min - 211 - Ripening and the Inevitability of Our Awakening
In this week’s episode, we talk about why we’re often left feeling impatient, judging that we aren’t doing “enough” on our spiritual path; needing to do things better; more quickly; more intensely. It can be hard to let go of a striving mentality so that we can actually move at the pace we’re meant to. But the reality is that with our practice, we will naturally ripen. Our awakening is INEVITABLE. You will learn: // Why your awakening is inevitable (isn’t that great news?!) // The downside of impatience and striving for a quick-fix approach // How to stop grasping for growth on our spiritual path and allow it to naturally “ripen” // The importance of being led by trust vs control // Signs we’re trying to force our awakening instead of letting it take the time it needs // The Four Dharma Seals Resources: // Episode 126: How to Know if You’re Making Spiritual Progress // Episode 204: What if This Is as Good as it Gets. // Episode 208: The Sit Spot Practice - When It’s Hard to Meditate // I’d love to hear from you! Fri, 19 Apr 2024 - 17min - 206 - What if This is as Good as it Gets?
In this episode we take the question of, “What if this is as good as it gets?” and explore why we are having the reactions we do to that question, and what if we allow acceptance of the way things are in order to feel more ease and joy in the present? (and explore our resistance to the concept of acceptance of reality as it is). This is not about tolerating violations of our fundamental rights and safety or basic quality of life, but rather addressing the fact that when we are constantly waiting for things to be different and striving for that because we think THAT is what will make us happy, we are ironically setting ourselves up for a lot of discontent. Striving for an external factor - a change in circumstances for happiness. Fri, 12 Apr 2024 - 20min - 205 - Cool Boredom - Why It's Necessary for Our Practice
This week is all about “cool boredom,” and why it’s an important part of our meditation practice. It can open us up to the many skills needed on our path, including learning to not need constant ego-affirming stimuli, and the capacity to allow inner peace and self-inquiry. We’ll jam on the difference between cool and hot boredom and how each can serve its own purpose as we find a healthy balance between ecstatic experiences and simply being. The goal isn’t to live a life of cool boredom - it’s a middle way between that and ecstasy. In this episode, we talk about how understanding the emptiness and interdependent nature of our emotions and felt experience of energy can help us heal from shame, anxiety, rage, and more. I’ll talk about why we all struggle to see our energy as neither good nor bad, and the importance of finding community and support when we’re unable to see the potential for change in our own situation. We also dive into some practices to help us protect ourselves and also cleanse from heavier energy when it’s harder for us to see the emptiness of a situation, and how we can more effectively hold space for one another. In this episode, you will learn: // Why energy is neither inherently good or bad - and why we can still use protection and cleansing practices // How we can learn to view our own felt experience with emptiness and potential // How we can help others see their energy in this way, while protecting ourselves // Why we can’t do this work alone Resources: // Episode 24: How to Be With Any Emotion // Episode 28: Practical Emptiness // Episode 46: Letting Emotions Be Your Guide // I’d love to hear from you! Plus, I’ll talk about how we can begin to explore our Core Wound without retraumatizing ourselves all over again. Fri, 23 Feb 2024 - 21min - 198 - What it Means to be in Reciprocal Relationship
This week’s episode is all about our relationship with the more-than-human world, and the importance of not just taking from it, but also giving back. Today’s modern industrialized society encourages us to take and extract, but in doing so, we are left empty and disconnected, and the more-than-human world suffers as well. We can find a way to heal ourselves, and help restore balance, love, and respect to the world we all hold a unique and important place in. This plays out in our relationships with other people, too! You will learn: // How reciprocal relationship matters not just in our human relationships, but also with the more-than-human world // How modern industrialized society encourages humans to take and dominate… and how that’s starving the world and our spirits // Practices that help us give back // What it means when we are not experiencing reciprocity in our human relationships (hint: potentially toxic!) Fri, 16 Feb 2024 - 28min - 197 - Going Beyond Our 5 Senses
In this Episode of the Rebel Buddhist Podcast, we’re diving into our 5 senses… and beyond. The way we connect with the more-than-human world can heal ourselves and the world around us, but using only our 5 senses just scratches the surface of ways we can begin to be more present to nature - and ourselves - on a daily basis. I talk about the more subtle and energetic ways of knowing that we can cultivate to develop an authentic relationship with the natural world, and even learn to communicate with more-than-human others. As usual, I’ll be giving you some great tips to help you get started! You Will Learn: // Exercises to practice having authentic relationships and connections with more-than-human others. // How tapping into our deeper ways of knowing - more subtle than the 5 senses - can heal us and the world around us // How we can drop into our five senses in a deeper and more meaningful way to help us be more present // Ways we can connect with our more esoteric senses in nature on a daily basis // Plus… more evidence to support you haven’t totally lost it if you sense messages from the world around you Resources: // Learn more about Amos Clifford’s Nature & Forest Therapy // The Adventure Mastermind is FULL! Fri, 9 Feb 2024 - 26min - 196 - Work - Survival Dance or Sacred Offering
This week’s episode is all about our work - and what to do when it’s more of a Survival Dance than a Sacred Offering. I’ll share my own journey as I stepped into my Soul Purpose of soul midwifery and how I chose to reframe my job to keep from resenting it. Plus I’ll talk about the first step we can all take to help us begin our sacred dance: cultivating ziji - our radiant inner confidence. You will learn: // Why the survival dance is necessary for each of us, and how it helps us begin exploring our sacred dance // How self-reliance and ziji can help us power through moments of doubt and perceived failure on our journeys // Why it’s become so hard for us to find and follow our Soul Purpose in a sustainable way // Ways we can connect our survival dance to our sacred dance as we continue to explore our Soul Purpose Resources: // Episode 64: Cultivating Radiant Inner Confidence - Ziji // Episode 134: What You’re Meant to BE // Episode 178: The Gift of Wandering - Exploring Our Purpose // The Adventure Mastermind is FULL! . Fri, 2 Feb 2024 - 25min - 195 - Lessons in Trust and Interdependence - Crossing the Street in Hanoi
This week I reflect on a recent visit to Hanoi, Vietnam, and how a simple experience of crossing the street turned into a very healing and eye-opening lesson in trust and interdependence. We’ll talk about how in the US, when it comes to navigating traffic and driving, we are taught to assume we are invisible. Drive defensively. Cross streets assuming no one sees you. In Hanoi, it was the opposite. If you wanted to do something as basic as cross the street, you have to assume you would be seen, and that people cared and would take care. I was able to literally walk into oncoming traffic amongst strangers - something we can’t do in many industrialized growth societies like the US. We explore the vulnerability and beauty of how humans can move through chaos together when we come from a place of interdependence and interbeing. You will learn: // What is possible when we embrace interdependence and the fact that we are connected to everything // The gifts that taking risks by being vulnerable and trusting others can bring to us (while using discernment, of course!) // How we can find healing in interdependence and trust in one another // Why so many industrialized growth societies are so far from interdependent interbeing, and how we can offset that Resources: // We just had our bonus virtual retreat for the AMM early birds, so be sure to apply if you haven't yet, because it’s recorded and you can watch it in your pajamas AND still get the amazing January bonuses we have going on. Fri, 26 Jan 2024 - 17min - 194 - Letting Go of Your Former Identity - Dissolution
This week we’re continuing our conversation about soulcentric adulthood by diving into the topic of soul initiation. We’ll jam on what the heck that even means and why we must first undergo a transformation and death of our old self before we can discover and step into our Soul Purpose. Fri, 19 Jan 2024 - 26min - 193 - Soulcentric Adulthood
In this Episode of the Rebel Buddhist podcast, we talk about what it means to be a true grown-ass adult…in a soul centric way. Many theories of human development focus on stages that are reached in certain age ranges. But you and I both know that turning 18 doesn’t mean you’re a grown-ass adult, and it certainly doesn’t guarantee that we are psychospiritually mature. Listen to find out what true adolescence and adulthood mean, and why reaching true adulthood is so important for ourselves and the world around us. You will learn: // The difference between Eco-Soulcentric and Ego-centric Development // Why so many people can live their entire lives without ever discovering true adulthood // What true adolescence and adulthood are // The 9 transitions or passages between the 8 stages of Bill Plotkins’ Eco-Soulcentric Wheel // The importance of reaching true adulthood - for ourselves, our community, and the world References: // Wild Mind Series: North South East West // Episode 105: Soul vs Spirit // Episode 139: Nature & Reconnecting // Episode 187: Leaving Home // Episode 129: How to reparent ourselves // Episode 116: Rites of Passage // If you're up for a journey that involves soul-searching, mind-expanding wisdom at a level most people don’t even explore, and taking on the honorable role of a true adult in your community, and eventually even as a respected elder which we really need more of (because remember - we have to complete these other stages first!), check out the Adventure Mastermind - we start with a virtual retreat later this month, and our first retreat is on the Big Island of Hawaii in February. Fri, 12 Jan 2024 - 32min - 192 - Islands of Sanctuary - Being a Refuge for Your People
In these times it can be easy to feel powerless to have any significant impact on the future, especially as we cross the threshold of being able to reverse things already set in motion, like climate change. We need to move beyond the concept of “changing the world” - which is often overwhelming and leads to apathy. Indeed, in many ways, we can’t change the world. AND this does not mean we do nothing. When I was an activist against nuclear weapons in my teens and also advocating for environmental changes, this was the mentality - to change the world. And back then, in some ways, it was easier to do that. But with some of the crises we are facing today, there are many things that are irreversible, and we can easily fall into despair. An Island of Sanctuary is a place of refuge and community. As Margaret Wheatley says, “We can’t keep swimming alone in these toxic seas.” In this week’s Episode, we’ll talk about how we can do our part to build islands of sanctuary in a more manageable way - within our own families and communities. You will learn: // Why “saving the world” might not be as noble as it sounds // The dangers of not having discernment about what we can and cannot change // The importance of helping those within our reach // What Islands of Sanctuary are and why they’re so necessary for effective changemakers // Why we can’t skip the chaos and collapse, no matter how much we want to - and how we can prepare for it // Qualities of an Island of Sanctuary for yourself AND your community Resources: // Episode 188: Connected in Our Grief and Wonder // Episode 179: Medicine for These Times // OK my friends, as we arrive in a brand new year, If you’re looking for your own Island of Sanctuary to do this deeper work, to open to truth and most importantly to the truth of your own soul, come join me in the Adventure Mastermind. Fri, 15 Dec 2023 - 39min - 188 - Breakups + Heartache
This episode is all about a highly requested topic: breakups and heartache. We’ll talk about the difference between “clean pain” vs “dirty pain,” as well as the importance of fully metabolizing the pain and sadness that comes from the end of any relationship (and what happens when we don’t). We also dive into the role history and societal expectations play in how we validate or judge relationships, and why using the length of a relationship to legitimize it isn’t helpful - at all. We explore relationships being there for a reason, season, or lifetime, and how resisting reality (the relationship has run its course; the other person feeling it’s done, even if we don’t agree; facing that we really aren’t satisfied in the relationship) really screws us in the end. And of course, we talk about how we can cause ourselves way less unnecessary suffering, and instead move towards transformation and growth. You will learn: // What clean and dirty pain are, and how to tell the difference // How to go from dirty to clean pain and help ourselves heal // How to steer clear of shame and blame // The role societal expectations play in how we validate or judge relationships // The benefits of “conscious uncoupling” Resources: // Episode 2: How to Not Care What Other People Think About You // Episode 16: How to Improve Any Relationship // Episode 18: How to Coach Yourself // Episode 24: How to Be With Any Emotion // Episode 36: How to Let People Be Wrong About You // Registration is officially open for the Adventure Mastermind and we’re already halfway full! Thu, 22 Jun 2023 - 19min - 163 - Healing vs Curing
Often my mental health patients or Adventure Mastermind clients will ask me if they can be cured of their depression, anxiety, or complex emotional experiences. I’ve also noticed that many of us use “healing” and “curing” interchangeably, which doesn’t really work since they’re actually quite different. Remember, not everyone has the option to cure whatever dis-ease or ailment they have. So, it’s important to not just live for a future cure, but to also be fully present with the healing that’s possible right now in the present moment. If there is no cure immediately available to us, if we accept what is, what does healing look for us? For you? Do you find resistance there? Why? What beliefs could be holding us back from healing while we also look for new possibilities for cures as well? You will learn: // The difference between healing and curing // How healing and curing can be used together // Why defining healing or curing is difficult with mental health conditions // How to be present with the healing that’s possible right now Resources: // Episode 82: How to Live in Polarity // If you’re new to the squad, grab the Rebel Buddhist Toolkit I created at RebelBuddhist.com. Thu, 16 Feb 2023 - 48min - 145 - Your Wild Mind - The South + Wounded Children
In this episode, we’re continuing our Wild Mind series and diving into the sensuous, embodied, and emotive energy of the South. I explore how the South helps us tap into our authentic, wild, animal knowing of who we are and why we are here, and the deep knowing of our belonging on this planet. I also introduce the subpersonalities of the South - our Wounded Children, which often have us in a place of emotional reactivity, fear of being abandoned, and disconnected from our authentic self. I’ll also give you some practical ways we can integrate the qualities of the South through simple practices and reflections. Thu, 12 Jan 2023 - 31min - 140 - Greatest Hits Vol. 8 - How to Stop Hustling Towards Our Goals
This week is all about how to not hurry towards our goals… because especially when it comes to the new year, we get so much BS pressure to “be better versions of ourselves” and we forget that beautiful truth that hey, actually, you’re perfect just as you already are. Goals that we intentionally set are not supposed to take the joy out of life. They are to invigorate us and keep us inspired... ...But not in the way a corporation wants to make more and more and more profits each year. Rather, in the way a gardener tends their plots to produce more because the plants are happier and healthier. Deep down we know that none of that sh*t really matters, and you are actually whole and worthy right here right now, even if you didn’t accomplish one single f*cking thing more. What’s crazy – and delightful - is as we detach our worthiness from our goals, we have more freedom and creativity available to us…and often more success as a result. This is why decreasing attachment to our goals is the best way to enter into the new year. WTF?? Yes, it’s true! A lot of clients ask me, “Isn't the point of goals to be attached to the outcome, so getting there sooner is better than later?” Nope. Listen to this week’s Greatest Hits episode to learn how to apply this concept and ENJOY your dreams and aspirations (+ goals)! Resources: Follow these influencers for not hustling as you hit your goals: Business coaches: // Rachel Rodgers // Susan Hyatt // Melanie Childers Instagram account: // The Nap Ministry Books: // Rest by Alex Soojung-Kim Pang // Burnout by Amelia & Emily Nagoski // If you want to deeply dive into this work immersed in nature on retreats and with a small group of like-minded seekers connecting regularly throughout your journey, apply for the next cohort of the Adventure Mastermind at AdventureMastermind.com It’s unlike any program you will ever do in your life.
