- 176 - Steven Barnes: Author of THE CESTUS DECEPTION and MACE WINDU: THE GLASS ABYSS
Today is an interview with the closest I have ever gotten to a real life Jedi: best-selling author Steven Barnes.
In addition to an incredible amount of science fiction books and stories, Star Wars fans will know Mr. Barnes best as the author of 2004’s Star Wars: The Cestus Deception novel and now, 20 years later, this week’s Mace Windu: The Glass Abyss.
Thank you so much again to Mr. Barnes for taking the time to impart such passion, wisdom, and inspiration in such a short time. Really just mind-boggling stuff.
His latest novel, The Glass Abyss came out yesterday, and I highly recommend it. Thank you to Meghan at Random House Worlds for setting all of this up. You can buy the book here.
In other news … I co-wrote an official Star Wars book. I cannot believe it. Star Wars Encyclopedia from DK Books is coming out next month and can be pre-ordered now. More info to come, believe me.

He changed movie-making forever, and is currently working to change the rest of the world too.
This was recorded live at this summer’s Rebel Scum Con and was a true dream come true.
Thank you so much to Mr. Best for taking the time to impart such passion, wisdom, and inspiration in such a short time. Thank you as well to manager Zach Avino and Alliance Appearance Agency for making this happen. Their next appearance together will be at SpaceCon San Antonio.

This summer, I was honored to spend the day with her in Austin, Texas, as we went around to different museums and sculpture gardens that had inspired her while growing up, including the Elizabet Ney Museum and the Umlauf Sculpture Garden (where the works of her professor, Charles Umlauf, are on display). We also visited the gorgeous Littlefield Fountain on the University of Texas campus, that especially inspired her and her creature designing.

Wed, 27 Oct 2021 - 24min - 117 - Rest in Peace: Gerald Home (1950 - 2021)
Hey everyone, it's Brandon. It was announced yesterday that Gerald Home, who portrayed Tessek ("Squid Head") and a Mon Calamari Officer in Return of the Jedi, passed away.
I am very lucky to have gotten to know Gerald ... interviewed him three times, gone to dinner with him, emailed back and forth for years, and played Cards Against Humanity late into the night.
He was a good man and an incredible part of the Star Wars community. And he is intrinsic to this show, always recommending his friends and being such a supporter. He called this "the best interview he had ever done" and it might have been because I heavily edited it, but I am grateful for it and for him.
Rest in peace.
Fri, 08 Oct 2021 - 32min - 116 - Rest in Peace: J.W. Rinzler (1962 - 2021)
Hey everyone, it’s Brandon. It was announced yesterday that the incredible Jonathan Rinzler (J.W. Rinzler) had passed away late last month.
It is no secret that him and his books were a direct inspiration for this show … and he was actually one of the first people I ever reached out to, asking to appear on it. He was incredibly gracious with his time and came onto a podcast that did not even have a published episode yet.
I wanted to put this interview, our 6th episode ever, back into the feed, unedited, complete with the sounds of doing dishes and cats in the background, and me being vocally very nervous and very new at this interviewing thing, and just everything else, because I just so thankful I got the chance to talk with him and thank him, even for just these 40 minutes.
If you haven’t already, pick up some of his non-Star Wars pieces, including his Making of Planet of the Apes, Making of Alien, and his book about the space race, All-Up. His biography of Star Wars producer Howard Kazanjian comes out this fall, and has been my most anticipated book of the year. He will be missed.
Rest in peace, thank you for everything, and may the Force be with you.
Thu, 05 Aug 2021 - 43min - 115 - Pierre Bohanna: Prop Maker and Costume Effects for a Galaxy Far, Far Away
Pierre Bohanna's earliest work on Star Wars began actually as a prop maker for The Phantom Menace. From there, he has worked on every Harry Potter movie, returning to the saga as Supervising Costume Effects Modeler for all of the recent Disney Star Wars movies.
Fascinating and incredibly talented, Pierre has some wonderful tales about things like rebuilding C-3PO, redesigning stormtroopers, and lessons learned along the way of nearly 30 years of world building.
Check out some wonderful behind the scenes photos that I had never seen before at his website: www.pierrebohanna.com
We actually will be taking a short break in July … I’m getting married this weekend, so I’m about to be a bit pre-occupied haha.

Michael McCormick was one of the original puppeteers and sculptors of Salacious Crumb, Sy Snootles and Ephant Mon, who then left Return of the Jedi’s Creature Shop early into production, because of injuries.
This is a short, live, interesting interview, and I believe it’s his first Star Wars-related one ever. We touch on many subjects, some fun and some not-so-fun, but I hope you get a better understanding of Mr. McCormick from this, as well as of his life and his incredible talent.

Today I’m talking to one of the biggest inspirations for this show: Mick Garris.
Yes, you may know Mick as one of the most influential genre writers and directors of all time, or you may know him from his incredible podcast, Post Mortem with Mick Garris … but you may not know that his first job in film was as the receptionist at “The Star Wars Company” in 1977, where he answered phone calls and operated R2-D2 for the Chinese Theatre, the Oscars and, yes, even The Holiday Special.
This is such a special interview and it is a real honor to get to talk to a real Master of Horror.
If I didn’t say it enough, and you like horror and filmmaking even in the slightest … definitely check out Post Mortem with Mick Garris, on the Dread Podcast Network, as well as his vintage interviews on Mick’s personal website: mickgarrisinterviews.com

And, whether it is his Rogue One novelization or his most recent book, Victory’s Price, an Alexander Freed Star Wars story is always one to be celebrated.
If this episode does not convince you to check out the Alphabet Squadron trilogy, I really don’t know what else would.
Thank you as well to Lauren and the PR team at Del Rey for helping set all of this up.
Head to AlexanderFreed.com for more updates on what is coming up.

Wed, 24 Mar 2021 - 41min - 103 - Lauren Mary Kim: The Stunts Behind The Armorer and Ahsoka
Stunt woman, martial artist and actor, Lauren Mary Kim has helped bring to life such beloved characters like Ahsoka Tano (The Clone Wars, Season 7) and The Armorer (The Mandalorian, Season 1).
Whether motion capture with Ray Park for The Siege of Mandalore or being on set with Jon Favreau in The Volume for The Mandalorian, Lauren’s hard work and incredible talent has made her an integral part of some of the most iconic and badass moments in Star Wars.
Make sure you’re following her on Instagram, @LaurenMaryKim, to keep up with all of the incredible things she is doing.
Next week is my really fascinating conversation with author Alexander Freed, so you still have a few days to finish up Alphabet Squadron: Victory’s Price.

Wed, 17 Mar 2021 - 17min - 102 - Ray Hassett: Acting in Echo Base, as Lt. Tigran Jamiro
Ray Hassett played Lt. Tigran Jamiro on Echo Base, in The Empire Strikes Back. Of course, he is best known for his iconic barb to Han Solo: "Your Tauntaun will freeze before you reach the first marker!"
Truly one of the more unique interviews we’ve had on this show, we delve into his early improvisational work, pairing with John Ratzenberger, becoming a fire eater on the streets of London, acting in James Bond and Superman, as well as the work that he does now tying all of his skills together.
As mentioned, you can visit RayHassett.com for more information on his current work.
Thank you also to Derek Maki and Coolwaters Productions, friends of the show, who made this interview possible. To meet Mr. Hassett at an upcoming show, or purchase any autograph right now: https://coolwatersprods.com/

Wed, 10 Mar 2021 - 23min - 101 - Tony McVey: Sculpting Salacious, Sy Snootles, Jar Jar, The Child, and More
Today is our 100th episode of Talking Bay 94, and I’m talking to the legendary Tony McVey: model maker, sculptor and character designer, who has worked on three generations of Star Wars.
The designer of Salacious Crumb and sculptor of Sy Snootles, the Rancor and Gamorrean Guards for Return of the Jedi, Mr. McVey returned to bring Jar Jar, Geonosians, and Yoda to three dimensions for the prequels, and then once more to The Mandalorian, to help design already-iconic creatures like The Child and Kuiil.
I can think of no better person to be our 100th interview.
For a more in-depth look at his process and creations, definitely go to his Facebook page, which is jam packed with incredible models and sculptures: https://www.facebook.com/tony.mcvey.777
And so yeah, that is our 100th episode. I cannot believe that we’ve gotten to this point and to this milestone.
I want to take this time to thank so many people: our guests, who have been so generous and gracious, our partners, who have helped make a lot of these interviews possible, and, of course, all of you, our fans, for supporting the show, listening every week, telling friends, reviewing us on Apple, and buying the merch.
I, Brandon, want to especially thank Jason, the producer of this show, who tirelessly works behind the scenes with recordings and video call set ups and all the incredible graphics you see every week. He was the first person I texted with this idea, way back in 2017, and I am so grateful that he’s been on this journey with me ever since.
It has meant much to hear from you all and to be welcomed into the Star Wars community with such open arms, over the past 3 years. And really, I just can’t wait to see what happens next.

Wed, 03 Mar 2021 - 32min - 100 - Dave Carson: Crafting STAR WARS Storyboards, Creature Shops and STAR TOURS
Dave Carson is an extremely talented man of many different roles thorughout the Star Wars saga: whether working as a storyboard artist, a Creature Shop sculptor, or visual effects supervisor, his work left a lasting mark on so many of the movies we love.
From his start on The Empire Strikes Back to bringing the Gamorrean Guards to life in Return of the Jedi, he also has some incredible stories from his work on Star Tours and the Special Editions.
Of course, we also dive in to his monumental non-Star Wars work, including Young Sherlock Holmes (the stained glass man), Willow (and his idea for the morphing technology) and Jurassic Park. Incredible.
In this lead up to Episode #100 (which is crazy to even say) I would really appreciate some new reviews on Apple. If you can leave a 5-star review of the show right here on your favorite podcast app, or on Podchaser: podchaser.com/TalkingBay94

Wed, 24 Feb 2021 - 49min - 99 - Don Bies Returns: An Inside Look at the Lucasfilm Archives and the Special Editions
Don Bies came on this podcast way back on Episode #5 (!). If you haven’t listened to our previous conversation, definitely give it a download first, to hear all about his incredible career … because this episode is me asking all the questions I wish I had asked him 3 years ago.
Japanese Panasonic commercials (and adventures with Peter Mayhew + previous guest Niki Botelho)… the 1988 Marin County Fair … the Special Editions … and so, so much more.
I think I broke my mic (sorry) from laughing so hard.
It truly means the world that Mr. Bies came back on the show, and that he took a chance on this podcast 3 years ago … and, of course, his stories are just the best, if you can’t tell by my reactions.

Wed, 17 Feb 2021 - 1h 18min - 98 - Paul Davids: Author of THE GLOVE OF DARTH VADER, Creator of Trioculus and Zorba the Hutt
Paul Davids co-wrote the Jedi Prince series of books, best known for The Glove of Darth Vader, as well as characters like Trioculus, Zorba the Hutt … and, of course, the grandchild of Emperor Palpatine. And that was 30 years ago!
I grew up reading these books and so getting to talk about their creation was such a blast. (Mr. Davids sure knows how to tell a story.)
It's such a fun interview. And, as mentioned, if you’re interested in checking out any of his latest projects you can visit the following links:

Wed, 20 Jan 2021 - 34min - 97 - Richard Stride: Motion Capture of Poggle the Lesser (and Hundreds of Clones)
The prequel renaissance continues! Richard Stride played Separatist leader Poggle the Lesser in Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, as well as numerous other roles, including Clone Troopers and … Obi-Wan Kenobi (in more scenes than you would believe).
It’s a great, quick inside look at what it was like to be on set while they were filming the prequels, and I hope you all enjoy it!
As mentioned, you can check out his website, richardstride.co.uk, for more information, as well as upcoming roles and appearances.
Next week is my long-awaited interview with the author of the Glove of Darth Vader series, Paul Davids. It’s a wild one, so hang on.

Wed, 13 Jan 2021 - 24min - 96 - Paul Duncan: On the Creation of THE STAR WARS ARCHIVES and Interviewing George Lucas
Paul Duncan is a writer, historian, and the author of the two volumes of Taschen's Star Wars Archives.
Mr. Duncan’s research, insights, and his exclusive multi-day interviews with George Lucas, himself, make these books a must-have for any Star Wars fan ... and this interview, if I do say so myself, a must-listen.
Listening back on this interview while editing, I was again just so impressed (and obviously so inspired) by Mr. Duncan, and I hope to one day be half the interviewer, researcher and writer that he is.

Wed, 06 Jan 2021 - 1h 23min - 95 - The Book of Boba Fett: An Oral History of the Bounty Hunter
Today is Talking Bay 94 … Episode 94.
So I wanted to do something special, especially after the announcement of The Book of Boba Fett series, as well as the very sad news of Jeremy Bulloch’s passing last week.
Over the past few years of this show, we’ve been able to interview a lot of cast and crew members, who have put on the Mandalorian armor, who have helped design it, or who have brought it to life in other ways. What follows is a brief, chronological look at bringing Boba Fett to the screen for the Original Trilogy, from 1978 to the 1997 Special Editions, using clips from our past 94 episodes to do so.
I’ll be introducing the people who will be talking beforehand, and there will also be some select archival clips from people we may not have been able to interview. If any of these seem interesting, definitely go back through our episode library to hear these full stories.
Let’s all just buckle up, then, and listen to these talented people talk about their experience with everyone’s favorite Bucket Head.

Wed, 16 Dec 2020 - 55min - 93 - Dan Perri: Designer of STAR WARS' Opening Crawl
Dan Perri is an iconic title designer, who, well, created the opening crawl of the original Star Wars.
You know, the crawl.
His work spans decades and directors, and I try to tackle as many as I can: from William Friedkin (The Exorcist) and Martin Scorcese (Taxi Driver, Gangs of New York) to Steven Spielberg (Close Encounters) and, of course, George Lucas.
We dive deep into his process and his experiences, from his early years being inspired by Saul Bass to designing the titles for the Suspiria remake. To be the first to find out when his book is coming out, head to www.danperri.com.

David Dozoretz spearheaded the pre-visualization work on the Special Editions and the first two Star Wars prequels, as pre-vis effects supervisor. He is such an immense talent and has such incredible passion for his work, so it was a real honor.
This is such a fun episode, a deep dive into what it was like to be working at Skywalker Ranch ... while they were literally changing how movies we being made forever. (Also stick around for a John Knoll egg toss picnic story.)

Wed, 02 Dec 2020 - 1h 02min - 91 - Chris Bartlett: On Portraying Protocol Droids, Bounty Hunters and a Flute-Playing Kubaz
Chris Bartlett is not only is the official "Media C-3PO", but also has had numerous roles in these first two seasons of The Mandalorian, including bounty hunter Q9-0 and the flute-playing Kubaz from the very first episode.
His story of turning his cosplaying and costume-building hobby into a profession is super inspiring, and his stories of working with people like Anthony Daniels, Carl Weathers, Werner Herzog …and Barack Obama, are such a delight. You’re going to love this one.
On Black Friday, we'll be dropping our newest line of merch, featuring restocks of old shirts, as well as new items I’m really excited about (including an “Edited by Marcia Lucas” credits shirt and a reproduction of an Empire Strikes Back sound crew shirt that you’re not going to believe). Wed, 25 Nov 2020 - 49min - 90 - Todd Vaziri: Putting the "Magic" in Industrial Light & Magic
Industrial Light & Magic digital artist and compositing supervisor Todd Vaziri has worked on every Star Wars movie since 2002, beginning with Attack of the Clones.
Whether for the prequels (including the final duel on Mustafar), the sequels (figuring out the feel of a modern Star Wars movie), the spin-offs (helping to bring Tarkin and the Kessel Run to life), theme park rides (including Star Tours and Rise of the Resistance), or Stephen Colbert’s Green Screen Challenge, Mr. Vaziri’s passion for movie-making is evident in his every shot, and in his every answer on this episode.
I’ve wanted him to be a guest on Talking Bay 94 for such a long time, and man, it was so worth the wait.
Make sure you are following him on Twitter: @TVaziri … he is truly one of the best people to follow, period, on that app.

Joining me is Delilah S. Dawson, also the author of Phasma and Galaxy’s Edge: Black Spire, John Jackson Miller, who previously wrote Kenobi and A New Dawn, and Tracy Deonn, who might be a newcomer to writing for Star Wars, but whose story about the Dagobah Cave in this book blew me away.

Wed, 11 Nov 2020 - 1h 04min - 87 - Dave Dorman: Iconic STAR WARS Artist of Comics and Covers
Dave Dorman is one of the greatest Star Wars artists of all time.
Since the early days of the Expanded Universe, Mr. Dorman’s art has been some of the most iconic images of a galaxy far far away. From Dark Empire to Tales of the Jedi, Dark Forces and beyond, it was a real treat getting to dive in a little bit more into his process.
As you know, we don’t typically release episodes on Saturdays ... but this is a special episode, brought to you by our friends at Coolwaters Productions, who are currently doing an autograph signing with Harrison Ford. After the interview, we are then joined by Coolwaters President Derek Maki for about 15 minutes worth of a Ford Signing Q&A.
(And there probably won’t be an episode this Wednesday, just knowing what Tuesday night has in store and my mental headspace, so I wanted to make sure this at least was published now!)
Here's a direct link to the exclusive Indiana Jones print we were talking about, as well as a ton of other options for the Harrison Ford signing: https://coolwatersprods.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=9&products_id=2158

Sat, 31 Oct 2020 - 42min - 86 - Andrew Booth (BLIND LTD): Designing How STAR WARS "Feels"
BLIND LTD's work as a London-based creative studio designing user interfaces for movies, whether it is for James Bond or The Dark Knight Trilogy (or, especially, Star Wars) is simply incredible.
What makes Star Wars feel like Star Wars? This episode dives deep into that question and I enjoyed it so, so much.
Thank you again to Mr. Booth, as well as Helen Baker from BLIND LTD for the time, the patience and the coordination it took to come on the show. For more examples of the incredible work, just open one of your Phil Szostak art books, or head to www.blindltd.com

SHE has spoken: Misty Rosas, performance artist for Kuiil the Ugnaught, from The Mandalorian, is on the show today.
Misty’s story is incredible and her talent is unmatched, so I hope you enjoy her stories about getting the role, working on set, and listening to Nick Nolte’s lines every night, as much as I did. More topics include:

Wed, 21 Oct 2020 - 41min - 84 - John Celestri: THE STAR WARS HOLIDAY SPECIAL Animator of Boba Fett
The first time anyone caught a glimpse of the now infamous bounty hunter was in the 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special.
Yep. That one.
We talk to Boba Fett's animator, the great John Celestri all about it: how Lucas got involved, what their inspirations were, and just a ton of great stories. Some other topics include:
- Growing up wanting to be an animator (and being self-taught)
- Getting involved with Nelvana (known for Ewoks and Droids), as well as how George Lucas first heard about the studio through Cosmic Christmas
- Inspirations for the short ranging from Heavy Metal magazine and Moebius to Clint Eastwood
You have a week, as of this publishing, to help with Mr. Celestri’s Kickstarter and get that Boba Fett sketch for yourself: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/johncelestri/john-the-animator-comicx

Wed, 14 Oct 2020 - 23min - 83 - Emily Swallow: Who is THE MANDALORIAN's Armorer?
The Armorer herself, the great Emily Swallow, from The Mandalorian, is on the show today. "This is the way."
It was so great to be able to dive deep into her instantly iconic performance. We talk all about what it was like to work in The Volume, be directed by Dave Filoni, Deborah Chow and Taika Waititi, and the influences and experiences she brought to her portrayal. More topics include:
- Bringing the Armorer to life with previous mask work / mime work experience
- Kurosawa's influence on both her character and the Mando set
- Breaking the news to her about the Armorer's Black Series toy
- The (surprise) Season 2 trailer voiceover
- And what exactly a blacksmith advisor was doing on on set!

Wed, 07 Oct 2020 - 23min - 82 - Gavin Bocquet: Prequel Production Designer, Star Wars Legend
The incredible work that Gavin Bocquet did with his team to bring worlds like Naboo, Coruscant and Geonosis to life in The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, cannot go unsaid.
This is a really rare interview with someone who made an indelible mark on the saga, as well as things like Young Indiana Jones, Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance and so many more … and I don’t think he’s talked in-depth about Star Wars in nearly a decade.
It was a huge honor and a really great conversation. Some topics discussed:
- His early mentorship with Stuart Craig (Saturn 3, Harry Potter) as well as working of Return of the Jedi with Norman Reynolds, as a Draftsman (Speeder bikes and Greeblies)
- Working with Steven Soderbergh on Kafka, his second ever film
- Walking over to his neighbor's house, Rick McCallum, on Christmas Eve to inquire about working on Young Indiana Jones (later with David Tattersall and Trisha Biggar)
- Of course, the Prequels: collaborating with Doug Chiang and John Knoll, location scouting with McCallum (who wanted to shoot in the Vatican), the Pink / Yellow highlighters
- And wrapping with some serious Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance talk that no Henson fan will want to miss.

Thank you all for making September the most-listened-to month we’ve ever had.

Wed, 30 Sep 2020 - 52min - 81 - Niki Botelho: Teek in Ewoks - The Battle for Endor
We're LIVE and talking to Teek herself, Niki Botelho from The Battle for Endor.
This is a pretty short, fairly rare look inside making the second Ewok film, as well as Niki’s return as an Offworld Jawa in The Mandalorian ... and if that was her as Teek in the Star Tours boarding video. (And, of course, since this was recorded live, some of our audio is not as crisp as other episodes, but you’ll get over it.)
If you want even more Teek stories, head on over to the most recent episode of Blast Points, where there is almost 5 extra minutes of this interview, which I recorded to help celebrate their Ewok Movie Month.
And, of course, this episode would not be possible without our friends at Galactic Productions. Head to their website for future appearances, as well as a really great stock of online autographs: galacticproductionsevents.com
Next week: my very rare conversation with prequel production designer Gavin Bouquet, who I don’t think has talked about Star Wars in nearly 20 years. Wild stuff.

Wed, 23 Sep 2020 - 13min - 80 - Bruce Nicholson: Two-Time Academy Award Winner for Star Wars and Indiana Jones
With his groundbreaking work on The Empire Strikes Back and Raiders of the Lost Ark as optical photography supervisor, Bruce Nicholson is an Industrial Light and Magic Legend.
If you don’t know what optical photography and compositing is, this episode is a crash course in all of that, including what is was like working alongside the Dykstraflex, mistakes in the end scene of Raiders and … the time he was the first person to suit up in the finished Boba Fett costume.
Next week: Ewok Movie Month Madness, with our friends at Blast Points.

Wed, 16 Sep 2020 - 21min - 79 - Rena Owen: Bringing Taun We to Life in Star Wars: Attack of the Clones
Star Wars fans will know Ms. Owen best as the Kaminoan Taun We in Attack of the Clones, but she has done so much (including a return in Revenge of the Sith as Senator Nee Alavar).
From humble beginnings growing up in New Zealand, to first working with Temuera Morrison on Once Were Warriors, we went through so much of her incredible career (whether The Orville or Siren, and beyond).
And, listen on to find out what role she was initially cast to play in Episode 2.

Wed, 09 Sep 2020 - 52min - 78 - Aaron McBride: Designing Maw Monsters, Fathiers and Maul's Robotic Legs
His work has spanned the prequels, the sequels, the spin-offs, Star Wars Insider covers and even the introduction of Darth Maul’s robotic legs, so it was a real thrill to be able to dive into the career of Aaron McBride, as well as his process and his inspirations.
Some topics discussed: Blade Runner and Ridley Scott, interning on The Phantom Menace, working with Steven Spielberg on A.I. and Minority Report and what organic beef jerkey has to do with the skeleton pirates from Pirates of the Caribbean.
With Star Wars, we dive further into his work on Revenge of the Sith (ballet dancers, the model shop making lava for Mustafar), Rogue One (working with John Knoll, designing K-2SO), The Last Jedi (Canto Bight, Fathiers), Solo (Maw Monster) and ILMxLAB (Vader Immortal).
