- 166 - The Grant Williams Podcast Ep. 83 - David Murrin
In the latest episode of The Grant Williams podcast, I’m joined by Global Forecaster, David Murrin who offers us some valuable insight into his background before we dive into a riveting discussion about lateral versus linear thinking, the cycles of empires, and the geopolitical tensions between the West and China. David argues that the West is in decline while China is an ascendant power seeking global dominance and predicts an escalating series of conflicts, potentially leading to a third world war in the coming decade as China seeks to displace the US as the global hegemon. David’s detailed analysis of China’s strategic approach and the West’s vulnerabilities make a compelling case that the world is heading towards a major confrontation with grave consequences. Some of the issues discussed may prove challenging for listeners, but engaging with these difficult topics and considering their implications for the future are, without doubt, an important use of your time. Jeff Sarti of Morton Wealth in Calabasas, CA joins me for a discussion around the ever-evolving dynamic between investor and manager the difficulties inherent in navigating changing economic circumstances through a more unconventional, more resilient approach to investing. Jeff explains how he and his colleagues try to think differently about investment strategies and portfolio diversification, particularly in the current economic environment. Jeff’s focus on building resilient portfolios that can withstand market volatility, rather than just chasing returns can be a difficult proposition in a world where quarterly returns against a benchmark have become many investors’ most important yardstick. We discuss the the importance of educating investors on long-term thinking and owning their portfolios, not just renting them and follow the breadcrumbs to how the impact of central bank policies and the growing debt burdens facing many countries, influence investment strategies focused on hard assets and hedges against inflation. Thu, 26 Sep 2024 - 12min - 164 - This Week In Doom Ep. 20: FORE! He’s A Jolly Good Fellow??? PREVIEW
Doomberg and I discuss various topics including Donald Trump’s golf swing and the potential importance of his recent round with Bryson DeChambeau, the assassination attempt made on Trump’s life the week prior to its airing on YouTube, conspiracy theories surrounding the Kennedy assassination, the standing down of Joe Biden, and the potential nomination of Kamala Harris and the conspicuous lack of media coverage since these major upheavals in American politics took place. This one will no doubt set a few tongues wagging and probably drive plenty of emails from those energized by the subject matter but, at the end of the day, please try to remember that I’m just a boy, standing in front of a Green Chicken, asking it to talk to me. Fri, 09 Aug 2024 - 12min - 163 - The Grant Williams Podcast: Shifts Happen - Episode Eight FULL EPISODE
In episode eight of Shifts Happen, Luke Gromen returns to discuss the current fiscal situation and its implications for rates trading, explaining how his views on the fiscal situation have made him unpopular among rates traders, as his predictions suggest that their industry may become obsolete. We also discuss the possibility that policymakers either don’t understand the situation, refuse to acknowledge it, or are too deep in to change course, and Luke also highlights the need for a new benchmark for pristine collateral, which he believes will be gold. Also under the microscope is the latest CBO report, which shows the need for a “super bubble” in the US, and Luke offers an explanation as to why he believes a recession in the US is unlikely. Finally, we conclude by looking at the potential outcomes of the current fiscal situation, including the possibility of retrenchment and reshoring or a dangerous escalation leading to nuclear war. Plenty to think about here with Luke once again on top form. In this episode of The End Game, Bill and Grant are joined by returning guest, Cem Karsan, founder of Kai Volatility, for a mind-bending conversation about the importance and influence of structural flows passive investing and structured products. Cem explains that the market is currently being supported by these structural flows, which have kept the market from experiencing normal fundamentals. However, Cem explains why he believes that at some point, these structural forces will be overcome by fundamental negatives and valuations, leading to a major market correction. Also discussed are the importance of volatility and dispersion in the market, and how these factors can indicate the health of the underlying supply of volatility. and we also touch on the potential for inflation and the role of central banks in managing the debt and inflationary pressures. Cem warns that, while the market may continue to rise in the short term, there are significant risks and challenges ahead that could lead to a major market downturn so beware! In this episode of The End Game, Bill and Grant are joined by the excellent “Le Shrub,” an anonymous Twitter account both of us have followed religiously for several years. Le Shrub discusses his approach to investing and his use of social media as a feedback loop mechanism. He also shares his views on Japan’s monetary policy, the role of gold and real assets as hedges against fiscal recklessness, and the potential for a market crash after the US election. We discuss the importance of having an outsized allocation to commodities and cash-flowing assets to protect against the risks posed by policymakers’ monetary and fiscal policies, and the significance of certain events, such as the South African elections and the recent Freddie Mac proposal, in shaping market dynamics. Along the way, Doomberg highlights China’s use of intellectual property theft and internal competition to establish national champions like Huawei and we also cover the geopolitical implications of U.S. and European sanctions on China, emphasizing the potential for China to dominate despite Western efforts. Sun, 14 Jul 2024 - 12min - 159 - The End Game Ep. 49 - Paulo Macro PREVIEW
Joining Bill and me for the latest episode of The End Game is fintwit superstar Paulo Macro as we pick apart the problems facing a series of central banks and try to handicap the various outcomes they face as The End Game approaches. On the slate are the Japanese economy, the yen, the Chinese renminbi, and the outlook for gold, with Paulo suggesting that Japan may have a longer road ahead in terms of fighting external pressures and that the BoJ may be able to turn the tide on the yen in the near- to medium-term. We also discusses the possibility of China allowing the renminbi to appreciate rather than devalue, the potential for a weaker dollar to drive the rest of the world’s economies and why Paulo thinks gold is acting more like a currency that may continue to strengthen against other fiat. Finally, Paulo explains why he believes the trading environment is set to become more challenging and that experienced traders will need to be more selective in their strategies. Joining me for this episode of The Grant Williams Podcast, is author Mark J. Higgins who has just published his excellent new book ‘Investing in US Financial History.’ We begin by discussing the overall importance of understanding financial history and segue into a conversation about the comprehensive narrative of the US financial system from 1790 to the present which his book provides. Mark highlights the role of key figures such as Alexander Hamilton, discusses the establishment of the Federal Reserve in 1913 and introduces one of the least-known, but perhaps biggest trailblazing characters in US financial history: Hetty Green. Higgins also shares his insights on investor behavior and the cyclical nature of markets, as well as his views on the current crypto craze. Throw in Ray Dalio, Andrew Jackson, Robert Triffin and Charlie Munger and there’s something for everyone in this excellent conversation. Fri, 10 May 2024 - 12min - 157 - The End Game Ep. 48 - Gerard Minack PREVIEW
Joining Bill Fleckenstein and me once again is our favourite Aussie-based analyst, Gerard Minack, who returns to The End Game to discuss various topics including Japan’s economy and market, US fiscal and monetary policy, central bank independence, gold, and the US dollar. Gerard shares his views on Japan, explaining that while he believes the Japanese equity market is worth being bullish about, he’s not quite as optimistic about the country’s economy. He also addresses the issue of everybody’s favourite issue – Japan’s public sector debt, which Gerard believes is often exaggerated and that the crucial figure to understand -net debt – is actually much lower. We also zero in on the importance of wage growth in Japan and its impact on inflation before pivoting to discuss the broader global markets, where he sees a major gap between market expectations and actual economic conditions. Gerard believes the market is far too optimistic about earnings growth and that there is a risk of a correction in the near future. Other topics under discussion include the US dollar and the recent movements in gold and copper prices. My guest on this edition of The Grant Williams Podcast is Travis Kling of Ikigai Asset Management, who joins me to explore a concept gaining increasing traction in today’s market environment – financial nihilism. Along the way, we also discuss the delicate balance between keeping interest rates low and inflating our way out of debt, the challenges faced by central banks in managing monetary policy to support economic growth while preventing excessive inflation and the potential impact of technological innovation on inflation as well as the possibility of a great wealth transfer from older generations to younger ones. Of course, we couldn’t end without a discussion around the role of cryptocurrencies in this changing economic landscape, so there’s that as well… Every episode of the Grant Williams podcast, including This Week In Doom, The End Game, The Super Terrific Happy Hour, The Narrative Game, Kaos Theory and Shifts Happen, is available to Copper, Silver and Gold Tier subscribers at my website www.Grant-Williams.com. Tue, 09 Apr 2024 - 1h 15min - 154 - The Grant Williams Podcast Ep. 77 - Brent Johnson
Joining me on this episode of The Grant Williams Podcast is my great friend Brent Johnson of Santiago Capital, for a discussion about global markets and, of course, The Milkshake Theory. Brent explains how he uses the Theory as a framework to help him understand how a sovereign debt and currency crisis might play out and how, though he’s been uncertain about markets recently, this framework has helped him navigate the volatility. Brent emphasizes the importance of remaining objective and questioning one’s own beliefs, as well as the need to be prepared for drawdowns in asset prices as we discusses the extraordinary bull market in certainty and the importance of diversification. There’s also time for a look at the current political situation in the US and its potential impact on the markets with Brent arguing that, while the US may be facing political and economic turmoil, the rest of the world still relies heavily on the US dollar, and a divided US would be a disaster for the global economy. Tue, 09 Apr 2024 - 12min - 153 - The Grant Williams Podcast Ep. 76 - Michael Howell
Returning to the podcast this time out is Michael Howell of CrossBorder Capital, and what a return it is as we discuss the continuing (some would say escalating) importance of liquidity in global markets. Michael explains how central banks have been the main source of liquidity since the 2008 financial crisis, with their primary goal being to preserve the integrity of sovereign debt markets and ensure a smooth refinancing environment for some $350 trillion of debt. He also highlights the British gilt crisis in September 2022 as a wake-up call for policymakers, signaling that markets are no longer robust and are, in fact, remarkably fragile. We also discuss how the path of least resistance for central banks is to continue kicking the can down the road and monetize the deficit, leading to higher structural inflation rates. Remi Tetot, the man behind The Mad King, joins me for a discussion around three of his most recent pieces of research. We discuss Remi’s observations around the Bitcoin ETFs and his views on the current up-cycle in crypto before switching to the growth potential of India, during which we discover a fascinating opportunity as India’s GDP expands with inevitable consequences for its defence sector. Finally, we switch our attention to the Magnificent 7… sorry, Magnificent 6, as Remi picks apart the fascination with NVIDIA, AI and data centres, drawing parallels to the broadband ‘revolution’ of the late-1990s. Wed, 20 Mar 2024 - 12min - 151 - This Week In Doom Ep. 18: Something For Everyone PREVIEW
Join Doomberg and I as we discuss several topics sure to stir even the most languid of blood including the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the changing nature of warfare with the rise of drone technology, and the concept of peak cheap oil. Doomberg’s argument that peak cheap oil is a fallacy and that human ingenuity will always find ways to extract and produce more hydrocarbons has garnered plenty of attention (and pushback) in recent weeks so here’s another chance to understand why and to hear about the backlash they received for their views on the matter. Finally, just when you think we’ve run out of controversial subjects, the conversation turns to an upcoming piece on the assault on climate denialism and the labeling of certain views as hate speech… Every episode of the Grant Williams podcast, including This Week In Doom, The End Game, The Super Terrific Happy Hour, The Narrative Game, Kaos Theory and Shifts Happen, is available to Copper, Silver and Gold Tier subscribers at my website www.Grant-Williams.com. Wed, 06 Mar 2024 - 12min - 150 - The Grant Williams Podcast: Shifts Happen - Episode Seven FULL EPISODE
A long-overdue episode seven of Shifts Happen sees Luke Gromen return to discuss the pace at which three things are happening: the acceleration of the US fiscal crisis and debt spiral, the Fed’s policy mistake of not letting inflation run hot enough, and the de-dollarization of global oil markets. Luke explains that China needs to de-dollarize its oil imports and commodity imports to avoid a currency crisis, which is driving the de-dollarization of global oil markets and also highlights the importance of gold in this process, as China needs gold to work in order to improve its standards of living and avoid a crisis. Luke believes gold will continue to rise in price, and that the pace of events is accelerating towards a US fiscal crisis. He explains the US is facing a fiscal crisis due to its high debt and deficits, and the lack of price-sensitive buyers for its treasuries and that the Fed’s choice is not inflation or deflation, but rather how it wants to lose the long end of the yield curve Plenty of food for thought here with Luke on fine form. As we ease our way into 2024, I’m delighted to welcome back my great mate, Julian Brigden to the podcast. Julian is the co-founder of independent research firm MI2 Partners and, as he’s demonsrated in previous conversations, a hugely insightful and incredibly entertaining guest! This time out, he and I discuss, amongst other things, the Goldilocks narrative, the potential risks in the current market environment, the performance of Tesla stock, the Chinese stock market, and the outlook for gold. Julian expresses his skepticism around threading the Goldilocks needle and highlights the historical challenges of achieving a soft landing in the US economy. He also shares his concerns about the future of Tesla and the Chinese stock market and offers some thoughts on gold, which he believes is in a structural bull market, but… Here we go… Every episode of the Grant Williams podcast, including This Week In Doom, The End Game, The Super Terrific Happy Hour, The Narrative Game, Kaos Theory and Shifts Happen, is available to Copper, Silver and Gold Tier subscribers at my website www.Grant-Williams.com. Wed, 07 Feb 2024 - 12min - 148 - The Grant Williams Podcast Ep. 73 - Michael Oliver 2023
Joining me for the final episode of The Grant Williams Podcast in 2023 is returning guest, Michael Oliver, the brains behind Momentum Structural Analysis (MSA) – one of the most original and, in my experience, accurate forecasters of asset prices right across the spectrum. In a hugely enjoyable conversation, we discuss the current state of the markets and what to expect in 2024. Michael explains his unique approach to technical analysis, which focuses on momentum rather than price, and emphasizes the importance of looking at long-term trend structures and how they can provide a different perspective on market patterns. Also under the microscope are the potential impact of the upcoming US elections and the increasing division in the country. Michael explains why he believes that there is no outcome of the election that will be peaceful and that this could have significant implications for the markets. Lastly, he also highlights the potential for a rally in gold and commodity-related stocks. Whichever way you cut it, Michael’s analysis suggests that investors should be cautious in the face of potential market volatility in the coming year. Returning to The End Game as we begin the year with a bang are the brains behind Simplify, The Two Mikes, Green & Taylor who take turns picking apart just about ever facet of the financial and political spectrum. From the growth of passive investing and its potential impact on the market to the importance of understanding the holdings and flows of passive funds, The Two Mikes hold court in typically forthright fashion. Also under the microscope are the behavior of stocks like Tesla and Apple, and how fundamental valuations will eventually come into play. The conversation then shifts to the influence of politics on the market, with a focus on the actions of the Treasury and the potential impact of the upcoming election. Finally, we discuss the role of the Federal Reserve and its recent policies, somehow managing to trigger just about every group along the way. My guest in this edition of The Grant Williams Podcast is a man who finds both himself and his field of expertise at the very heart of recent events in Ukraine, geopolitical strategist and author, Peter Zeihan. Peter’s books, The Absent Superpower, The Accidental Superpower and Disunited Nations have been incredibly helpful to me in understanding the strengths and weaknesses of not just the global geopolitical landscape as a whole, but also the individual countries involved in the escalating tensions. His upcoming book The End Of The World Is Just The Beginning is set to be an absolutely invaluable addition to his excellent work. In what is an intensely though-provoking and painfully realistic assessment of the war in Ukraine, Peter pulls no punches in laying out where we currently stand, why we are where we are, and the many painful roads the world may well travel from here in the weeks and months to come. This conversation isn’t for the faint of heart, but Peter’s understanding of the range of outcomes available to us is incredibly valuable at what is shaping up to be a pivotal time for mankind in so many ways. Returning to The End Game is The Lord of the Dark Matter himself, James Aitken. Among the topics under discussion is the (under appreciated) potential for a normalization cycle by the Bank of Japan. James suggests the BOJ may attempt a policy rate normalization due to structural reforms and the need to revitalize the equity culture in Japan which, it’s fair to say, would send the horses scuttling from the barn. James also highlights the potential spillover effects and changes in incentives for Japanese savers, which could impact global bond markets and capital flows. Joining me on the latest episode of The Grant Williams Podcast is my great friend, David Hay, Co-CIO of Evergreen GaveKal and the author of the excellent Substack Haymaker. Dave and I have known each other for the best part of fifteen years and have spent countless hours debating markets, testing hypotheses and helping each other understand and chart a course through increasingly difficult markets. This time around, the matters at hand included the wisdom of Seth Klarman, the Not-So-Fabulous Four, the debate about a soft- or no-landing scenario, the US consumer, oil markets and so much more. As always, Dave’s perspective on the entire market spectrum was incredibly useful as we discussed commodities, homebuilder stocks, the places Dave is investing and even found time for a little Fourth Turning. Definitely a conversation not to be missed. Joining me on the podcast for this episode is Chris Joye, Founder and Chief Investment Officer of Coolabah Capital Investments in Sydney Australia, a multi-billion dollar long/short credit fund founded in 2011. I’ve been following Chris for a number of years and was delighted to finally get the chance to talk to hm and the conversation more than lived up to my lofty expectations. Subjects under discussion include why Chris believes the market is underestimating how long higher inflation will persist (and the ramifications that will surely follow), why he believes this time the world’s central banks will be forced […] Every episode of the Grant Williams podcast, including This Week In Doom, The End Game, The Super Terrific Happy Hour, The Narrative Game, Kaos Theory and Shifts Happen, is available to Copper, Silver and Gold Tier subscribers at my website www.Grant-Williams.com. Joining us for this episode of The End Game is Kris Sidial, Co-Chief Investment Officer of The Ambrus Group, a tail-risk manager specializing in volatility strategies. Kris and his team seek to offer investors tail-risk protection without the associated 'bleed' in premium during times of dampened volatility so, with September fast-approaching, we thought it was a perfect time to chat with him as markets prepare to wake from their traditional summer slumbers. Kris' thoughts about what to expect as we move towards the back end of 2023 are incredibly interesting, with his expected scenario for the rest of this year having the potential to create quite the stir in markets lulled to sleep by the constant downward pressure on vol over recent years. The subject at hand in episode six of Shifts Happen is the potential for a new commodity-backed BRICS currency and, joining us to kick the idea around is Josh Crumb, Founder and CEO of Abaxx Technologies. Through his work at Abaxx, Josh is perfectly placed to discuss the importance of physical settlement in the commodity markets and the practical limitations of introducing a currency that requires settlement through physical transfer. Also up for discussion is the wider connection between energy and interest rates as Josh shares with us the lessons learned from decades of experience, with his diverse background as a mining engineer, trader and the Co-Founder of Goldmoney, giving him a rare perspective into the significant change taking place in the world of commodities. In the penultimate episode of The Grant Williams Podcast for 2023, I’m delighted to welcome Jesper Koll, a long-time resident of Japan and former Chief Strategist and Head of Research for U.S. investment banks J.P. Morgan and Merrill Lynch for a discussion about the current state of the country’s economy and the many Western misperceptions about the investment opportunities available in the world’s third-largest economy. Jesper discusses the quiet revolution taking place in Japan and the positive changes that have occurred over the past few decades, highlighting the improvements in quality of life, public infrastructure, and corporate efficiency. We also discuss the role of the Bank of Japan and the potential for interest rate normalization. Jesper suggests that sectors such as banks, financials, residential developers, and capital goods companies could benefit from the current economic landscape in Japan and emphasizes the importance of human capital and the changing dynamics in the labor market. Fri, 29 Dec 2023 - 12min - 133 - This Week In Doom Ep. 17 - Moles, Meat & Mayhem - FULL EPISODE
The Green Chicken is back to discuss three excellent recent pieces spanning Western sanctions against Russian oil and their unintended consequences, the preposterous words of a high-ranking member of the US House Ways & Means committee around the ’creation’ of hydrogen and the ongoing attempts to wean the world off a diet of meat. As always, Doomberg brings a little much-needed sanity to the debates around all three issues, using outdated concepts such as science and common sense to debunk much of what mainstream media is force-feeding its consumers. As the world around us gets a little more unhinged with each passing day, we’re fortunate to be able to call upon a cartoon fowl to provide a little perspective. Joining me fr this episode of The Grant Williams Podcast is Tom Bachrach, CIO of PFH Capital, a value investing partnership in the Philadelphia area. Several of Tom’s letters to his investors caught my eye in recent months and so I invited him onto the show to talk to me about how an investor looking for undervalued, sustainable businesses goes about navigating the new investment landscape - one of rising rates, falling inflation and ever-escalating madness. Our conversation took numerous twists and turns from value investing to debt and, eventually, onto energy and each of those turns made for highly thought-provoking discussion. Sat, 15 Jul 2023 - 12min - 131 - The Grant Williams Podcast Ep. 58 - Matt Barrie - FULL EPISODE
Joining me in this episode of The Grant Williams Podcast is the Sydney-based CEO of Freelancer.com, Matt Barrie. Matt was recently invited to give the opening keynote at the Sydney Morning Herald’s Sydney 2050 Summit and, it’s safe to say that, once Matt left the stage 40 minutes later, the room had been stunned into silence. The Australia Matt laid bare was a long way from the idyllic, sun-kissed ’Lucky Country’ of popular consciousness and far more in keeping with the portrait painted in the pages of Things That Make You Go Hmmm... over the last several years, so it was with great relish that I invited Matt onto the podcast to tell that same story and discuss the reaction to it. The full text of Matt’s stellar speech can be found HERE and a video of his opening keynote is HERE. I’d strongly urge listeners to either read or watch Matt’s speech in full. It is, as they say Down Under, a ripper! Joining me in this episode of The Grant Williams Podcast is Matt Stoller, former Congressional staffer and author of Goliath: The 100-Year War Between Monopoly Power and Democracy and the excellent Substack BIG. Matt’s work on the threat posed by monopoly power is exceptional and, in this fascinating conversation we cover the challenges he’s faced in taking on Big Tech monopolies, the anti-capitalist consequences of monopolistic corporate power, his experiences on The Hill during the 2008 Global Financial Crisis and his bipartisan approach to changing the current political landscape in the United States. There’s so much at stake as large corporations tighten their collective grip on the throat of the consumer and Matt offers an insightful look both backward and forward in trying to assess where things went wrong, and how they might be fixed. Joining me on this edition of The Grant Williams Podcast is returning guest, Danielle DiMartino Booth, CEO and Chief Strategist at QI Research, LLC in Dallas, TX. Danielle’s knowledge of the inner workings of the Federal Reserve has been invaluable both to her clients and the broader financial community in recent years and her analysis of the predicament in which the Fed finds itself and the fast-disappearing options at their disposal to extricate themselves has found a hungry audience. This time up, Danielle explains her latest thinking on the state of the economy, how we might be facing an abrupt economic air pocket, the political vulnerability of House Speaker McCarthy, and even the odds of the US splintering via a series of succession movements. Thu, 25 May 2023 - 12min - 128 - The Grant Williams Podcast: Shifts Happen - Episode Five PREVIEW
Episode Five of Shifts Happen brings into focus the recent ’quickening’ around the de-dollarization narrative and the impossible-to-ignore elevation in comments from world leaders questioning the logic underpinning their forced adoption of the US dollar in many cross-border trades. From the numerous bilateral trade agreements being struck that circumvent the dollar to the rising percentage of cross border trade being conducted by China in renminbi, Grant and Luke discuss the crucial difference between the dollar as a reserve currency and its role as a reserve asset - one of which is coming under significant threat, one of which remains rock solid. The extraordinary level of dogmatism on both sides of the argument comes under the microscope and Luke turns to Lucille Ball for an analogy which provides the perfect illustration of the problem facing the US Treasury. Mon, 01 May 2023 - 12min - 127 - The End Game Ep. 43 - Steve Eisman PREVIEW
Bill and Grant return for a no-holds-barred conversation with the great Steve Eisman of The Eisman Group within Neuberger Berman. Steve is no stranger, thanks both to his exploits during the GFC and the stupendous portrayal of those exploits by Steve Carell in the movie version of Michael Lewis’ wonderful book, The Big Short. Steve explains the history of paradigm shifts and tells us why he feels we are at the point of another major change - not only in the investment landscape but also in broader society. The recent meltdown in the mid-size banking sector comes under the microscope, as do Fed policy, lofty valuations, a likely return to a more familiar investment world, the tech reckoning and the purveyor of a certain set of ETFs focused on ’exponential growth’ stocks. Fun for all the family! Author Brendan Ballou joins me to discuss his superb new book, Plunder: Private Equity’s Plan to Pillage America in the latest episode of The Grant Williams Podcast. After graduating Columbia and Stanford Law, Brendan served as a Federal prosecutor and Special Counsel for Private Equity in the Justice Department’s Antitrust Division, where his mandate was to investigate private equity’s influence on financial markets. What he found shocked Brendan and moved him to write a book chronicling the outsize effect private equity has had in so much of American life over the last several decades. From nursing homes to prison phone companies, Brendan details how private equity has reshaped American business by raising prices, reducing quality, cutting jobs, and shifting resources from productive to unproductive parts of the economy. Forced to take on huge debts and pay extractive fees, companies purchased by private equity firms are often left bankrupt, or shells of their former selves, with consequences to communities that long depended on them. Wed, 26 Apr 2023 - 12min - 125 - The Narrative Game Ep. 9: Dollars, Indictments & ChatGPT - FULL EPISODE
In the ninth episode of The Narrative Game, Epsilon Theory’s Dr. Ben Hunt returns to discuss the narrative aspects of the sudden surge in mainstream commentary around the drive towards de-dollarization on the part of China, Russia, Iran et al. Suffice to say, all is not what it might seem. Elsewhere, with the indictment of former President, Donald J. Trump filling the news cycle, Ben offers a few thoughts on the potential motives behind the headlines, who might stand to benefit and whether this particular strategy might pay off. Finally, we discuss the revolution that is ChatGPT and how AI may disrupt the workplace and Ben clues us in on the upcoming Epsilon Connect event in Nashville, TN when he, Rusty Guinn and a host of speakers (including Yours Truly) will bring the narrative world to life in living, breathing colour. Thu, 20 Apr 2023 - 52min - 124 - The Grant Williams Podcast Ep. 51 - Peter Atwater - FULL EPISODE
My returning guest in this edition of The Grant Williams Podcast is my friend Peter Atwater, Founder of Financial Insyghts and Adjunct Professor at the College of William & Mary. Peter’s stellar work on the importance of mood and confidence has long been an important touchpoint for me when evaluating market conditions and likely paths ahead - never more so than this week. Given recent events, I wanted to try and add something to a conversation that has become noisier by the day. There are plenty of opinions and perspectives flying around (to which I’ll add my own in this weekend’s Things That Make You Go Hmmm…) and so it felt as though a conversation with Peter about the effect the twin collapses of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank this week are likely to have on public mood was a better contribution than debating the fast-moving details of what’s happening. My returning guest on this episode of The Grant Williams Podcast is a dear friend of many years - Simon Hunt, founder and proprietor of Simon Hunt Strategic Services. Simon’s experience in China over four decades has provided me with an important counterpoint to many Western-based views of the Middle Kingdom over the years - one firmly rooted in personal experience, deep personal connections and a willingness to look past consensus thinking. In this conversation, we discuss the status quo in China along with the wider geopolitical situation, Simon’s roadmap for the next couple of years and... TRIGGER ALERT... we expand upon comments Simon made about non-consensus climate change possibilities during his last appearance on the podcast. When James Aitken calls and says we need to record another episode of The End Game based on the events of recent weeks, Fleck and I dropped everything and got him on the phone immediately. In this superb conversation, James lays out how and why the turmoil in the UK happened and explains the implications — which extend into the depths of financial market plumbing, an area James knows better than just about anybody. Sun, 30 Oct 2022 - 12min - 113 - The End Game Ep. 37 - Gerard Minack PREVIEW
Episode 37 of The End Game sees Bill and Grant welcome back Gerard Minack of Minack Advisors for a discussion on the current market environment, the reality of the inflationary pulse upending markets and the path Gerard believes we take from here. Gerard’s one-man mission to convince the world that Central Bankers aren’t responsible for the unfolding disaster in financial markets runs headlong into a man with a hammer to whom everything looks like a nail in Fleck but the case Gerard makes is extremely thought-provoking. As Gerard says, investor sentiment is a three-month trailing average of the price action and, with that as a backdrop, we pick apart recent price action and dig into the ocean of data that Gerard parses for his clients in order to try and figure out what comes next... Sun, 30 Oct 2022 - 12min - 112 - The Grant Williams Podcast: Shifts Happen - Episode Three PREVIEW
Episode Three of Shifts Happen focuses on a fast-moving world that seems to get trickier by the day. The importance of energy self-sufficiency is revealing itself and that is shifting the power from formerly strong hands into the hands of those once considered weaker players. The war in Ukraine is amplifying the situation in mainstream media headlines but, away from those, there is a balance sheet contest taking place that reveals an entirely different pecking order - one which potentially upends the global power structure. Western sovereign debt markets are now under immense pressure with liquidity concerns escalating dramatically and currencies starting to move in directions and at speeds that are confounding central banks. What happens next? Luke has a few ideas and, as always, they are pretty thought-provoking. Every episode of the Grant Williams podcast, including The End Game, Super Terrific Happy Hour, The Narrative Game, This Week In Doom and the new series, Shifts Happen, featuring Luke Gromen is available to Copper and Silver Tier subscribers at my website Grant dash Williams dot com. Sun, 23 Oct 2022 - 12min - 111 - The End Game Ep. 36 - Ed Chancellor PREVIEW
In the latest episode of The End Game, Bill and Grant welcome author and financial historian non-pareil, Edward Chancellor back to talk about his new book The Price Of Time. During his first appearance on The End Game, Ed teased us with a book he was in the process of wrapping up which would chronicle the history of interest rates and tell the story of the cost of money over the course of history. Now, with the book appearing on multiple bestseller lists, Ed joins us to discuss what he learned as he trawled through the history books in search of a story that really is as old as time itself. From biblical times to the modern day malaise engulfing the world’s central banks as they battle the unintended consequences of a decade of artificial interest rates, Ed spins a story that has to be heard and needs to be understood. Mon, 12 Sep 2022 - 12min - 110 - This Week In Doom Ep. 9 - What’s Next For Europe? (Panel) (FULL EPISODE)
In this special edition of This Week In Doom, Grant and The Green Chicken are joined by Luke Gromen of Forest For The Trees LLC, Marko Papic of Clocktower Group and special guest Sir Steven Wilkinson, author of The Pitchfork Papers, for a discussion on the EU’s creaking energy policy, the effects of sanctions against Russia in the wake of the invasion of Ukraine and what it all means for the future of Europe. In a two-hour debate filled with insightful analysis, respectful disagreement and thoughtful perspective, we explored multiple facets of the current situation, picked apart the potential outcomes and tried to handicap the likely paths that may be taken from here. Finally, as the discussion turned to Germany’s role in how this all plays out, we welcomed Sir Steven who gave us the benefit of his near-30 years experience building and operating businesses in Germany.
Tue, 06 Sep 2022 - 2h 04min - 109 - The Grant Williams Podcast Ep. 38 - Sir Steven Wilkinson PREVIEW
The latest episode of The Grant Williams Podcast features the wonderful personality and profound intellect of Sir Steven Wilkinson - a man I’ve admired for a long time and who, earlier this year, I had the great pleasure of spending a day with as part of the Gold Tier About Time series. The genesis of this particular conversation was, as you’ll hear, Steven graciously pointing out to me where I was completely wrong in my thinking about the EU and, in particular, Germany. Having read my last Things That Make You Go Hmmm... and listened to my recent appearance on the excellent Wall Street Silver/Doomberg Spaces to discuss my thoughts on Europe, Steven contacted me to explain where I was off-beam. Needless to say, I thought my dressing down should be a) public and b) form the basis for a conversation that would make sure everybody ended up better-informed (with the possible exception of Steven!)... Sat, 20 Aug 2022 - 12min - 108 - The Narrative Game Ep. 8: N.E.W.S.
In the latest episode of The Narrative Game, Ben and Grant discuss the Narrative Early Warning System (N.E.W.S.) developed by Ben and Rusty Guinn to help not just investors, but everybody understand and sidestep the increasing amount of ‘controlled’ news funneled into our social media feeds, news sources and conversations with friends. NEWS is the culmination of a 30 year-long project which Ben has been developing since his earliest academic research and is designed to alert people to the signals and clues that what you may be reading has been delivered to you at a very specific time in a very specific way and through a very specific medium in order to generate a very specific reaction. Arming yourself with the defensive weaponry required to sidestep the ‘nudging state’ has never been more important so start fighting back today by listening to Ben. Fri, 19 Aug 2022 - 44min - 107 - The Grant Williams Podcast Ep. 37 - Peter Zeihan PREVIEW
The latest episode of The Grant Williams Podcast sees the welcome return of geopolitical strategist and author, Peter Zeihan - a man who has, in his previous two appearances, shaken many long-held assumptions about the balance of geopolitical power. This time Peter trains his gaze on Europe, picking apart the strengths and weaknesses of the EU as it tries to navigate its way through the most serious energy crisis in living memory as well as inflation that is headed for double digits. Peter’s conclusions will likely surprise many as he singles out one particular country where the problems its facing may lead to a catastrophic outcome for both the country in question and the wider European Union. Oh, of course, there’s still time to talk about China, the US and a post-Brexit Britain which is in the middle of a political crisis all of its own. Tue, 09 Aug 2022 - 12min - 106 - The Grant Williams Podcast Ep. 36 - Dan Oliver PREVIEW
After his appearance on The End Game last year, I’ve had countless requests to bring back my latest guest for another conversation to discuss the state of the monetary world with a special focus on precious metals and though his encyclopedic historical lens. Dan Oliver is a great friend and has the kind of brain I never tire of picking so I’m delighted he’s been able to find some time to grace the podcast once again. In another wonderful conversation, Dan once again dusts off the history books to provide colour and context around the present day predicament faced by central banks and to explain just how crucial liquidity is to properly functioning economies and societies. Inflations, depressions, manias and panics all come under Dan’s penetrating gaze and the result is podcast perfection. Fri, 15 Jul 2022 - 12min - 105 - The End Game Ep. 35 - Jeff Currie PREVIEW
Episode 35 of The End Game sees Bill and Grant welcome Goldman Sachs Global Investment Research Global Head of Commodities Research, Jeff Currie for a discussion around the current dynamics in the commodities sector and their potential place in The End Game. Jeff’s thoughts on the importance of the only two asset classes in the green this year — ‘hydrocarbons and carbohydrates’ — are extremely eye-opening and the masterful job he does in explaining the need for positive, pro-energy policy change in an era of overwhelming focus on climate change is both balanced and thought-provoking. The importance of putting a price on carbon is laid out beautifully, as are the problems with current tax policies and the straitjacket into which policymakers have strapped themselves. Lastly, Jeff offers his thoughts on gold and precious metals as the road towards The End Game rises up to meet us... Wed, 13 Jul 2022 - 12min - 104 - The End Game Ep. 34 - Greg Jensen PREVIEW
Episode 34 of The End Game sees the welcome return of Bridgewater Associates co-CIO, Greg Jensen who joins us again to reflect on his enormously prescient first appearance just under a year ago. (That episode is now available in full at https://www.grant-williams.com/podcast/the-end-game-ep-24-greg-jensen ) During that original conversation, Greg called the current inflationary headwinds roiling the worlds of central bankers and consumers alike and explained how what he saw coming would affect policy decisions and consumer behaviour. In another superb hour of insightful thinking, and with just about everything he predicted now upon us, Greg offers his thoughts on where we stand and what might come next. Central bank policy and credibility come under the microscope as does the current environment for liquidity and we dig into Bridgewater’s very vocal bet against Europe. This is another tour de force by one of the brightest minds in the global investment community. On the seventh episode of This Week In Doom, Grant and The Green Chicken take a dive into some of the recent pieces published by the Doomberg team, zeroing in on ludicrous energy policies, the real definition of the scientific method, the move to censor open debate, the strength of the Russian Ruble and tactics the Biden administration should implement in order defeat Vladimir Putin Every episode of the Grant Williams podcast, including This Week In Doom, The End Game, The Super Terrific Happy Hour, The Narrative Game and Shifts Happen, is available to Copper, Silver and Gold Tier subscribers at my website www.Grant-Williams.com. Wed, 06 Jul 2022 - 12min - 102 - The End Game Ep. 33 - James Aitken PREVIEW
The Lord Of The Dark Matter, James Aitken returns to The End Game to handicap the predicament in which central bankers find themselves now that the RBA has been forced away from yield curve control and Japan’s currency and JGBs (the fabled Widowmaker Trade) are once again in the crosshairs of the bond market As a reminder, Silver Tier subscribers to https://www.grant-williams.com get access to both Things That Make You Go Hmmm… and all editions of The Grant Williams Podcast, including The End Game, The Super Terrific Happy Hour, The Narrative Game, This Week In Doom and Shifts Happen so sign up today!
Wed, 06 Jul 2022 - 12min - 101 - The End Game Ep. 32 - Judy Shelton PREVIEW
In the latest episode of The End Game, Bill Fleckenstein and I have the great privilege of welcoming Judy Shelton to the podcast for a discussion that helps place one of the key missing pieces into the puzzle we’ve been attempting to assemble – the honest and frank perspective of a central banking insider. After her nomination to the board of the Federal Reserve by President Donald Trump in 2018, Judy’s appalling treatment at her Senate confirmation hearings demonstrated the very worst of partisan politics at an incredibly toxic time in America. A letter signed by 100 economists, including seven Nobel laureates, opposing her appointment suggests, to me, at least, that she would have been the perfect person to bring necessary change to an institution whose many failings are becoming more apparent by the day. Judy’s openness, insight and willingness to discuss the practicalities and limitations of modern-day central banking in this conversation are a breath of fresh air and worthy of our deepest respect and gratitude. Sun, 05 Jun 2022 - 12min - 100 - The Grant Williams Podcast: Shifts Happen - Episode Two PREVIEW
Episode Two of Shifts Happen shines a spotlight on the shift between the ‘paper’ markets and the ‘real’ markets as the importance of energy supplies becomes ever more apparent in a world where battle lines are being drawn, supply lines are being stretched and, in the case of the EU, economic suicide is being committed. What happens to the dollar? Will the US balance of payments finally start to matter and what are the chances of a hyperinflationary outcome? All of these questions and more are pondered in the wake of the surprising strength of the rouble and the increasing inflationary pressure being heaped upon Western governments who can’t seem to get out of their own way. Wed, 01 Jun 2022 - 12min - 99 - The Grant Williams Podcast Ep. 34 - Tarric Brooker PREVIEW
My guest in this edition of The Grant Williams Podcast is Tarric Brooker, an Aussie analyst who has become a must-follow for me and I think anyone interested in better understanding Australian politics, markets and, of course, the country’s fabled housing bubble. Tarric and I spoke on the eve of the Australian general election – an event in which the incumbent Liberal PM, Scott Morrison was unceremoniously ousted in favour of Labor’s Anthony Albanese (or ‘Albo’ to Aussie voters!!). The one thing that both parties have in common is an unhealthy desire to make sure the property market doesn’t crash - however, this time around, with inflation tying the RBA’s hands, the incoming Premier may not have things all his own way... Mon, 30 May 2022 - 12min - 98 - This Week In Doom Ep. 6 - Bennett Tomlin & George Noble FULL EPISODE
On the sixth episode of This Week In Doom, Doomberg and I turn our attention to the world of cryptocurrencies — or rather, stablecoins — in the wake of the recent collapse of Terra/Luna and the astonishing spectacle of a $60 billion meltdown. Joining us are two high profile critics of the crypto space, Bennett Tomlin and George Noble. Bennett and his co-host Cas Piancey have been at the forefront of thoughtful criticism of the cryptoverse with their excellent podcast, Crypto Critics Corner, while George has taken the bit between his teeth on behalf of Wall Street and become an Establishment lightning rod determined to force regulators into action. As always, the subject leads to raised voices and inflamed passions but... would you want it any other way? Tue, 24 May 2022 - 1h 29min - 97 - The Grant Williams Podcast Ep. 33 - Tian Yang PREVIEW
My guest on this episode of The Grant Williams Podcast is Tian Yang of London-based independent research providers, Variant Perception. Variant Perception’s pedigree is best-in-class. Their research uses a framework of proprietary leading economic and liquidity indicators to identify investment opportunities across asset classes. Those indicators are a great blend which cover tactical, cyclical and structural time horizons. In this conversation, Tian and I discuss what those indicators are telling him, how inflation changes the landscape, the signals being sent by term premiums and the sea change that may finally allow those brave enough to take on ‘The Widowmaker’ trade to come out on top. Joining me on this installment of The Grant Williams Podcast is my friend, David Hay of Evergreen Gavekal in Bellevue, WA. David and I discuss the dilemma facing central banks, the ways in which the return of inflation change the investment landscape, the ongoing tech wreck, the importance (and reliability) of David’s preferred measure of breakouts and breakdowns, the painful lessons he learned before discovering that particular measure and energy - a space in which David has been investing for many years As a reminder, Silver Tier subscribers to https://www.grant-williams.com get access to both Things That Make You Go Hmmm… and all editions of The Grant Williams Podcast, including The End Game, The Super Terrific Happy Hour, The Narrative Game, This Week In Doom and Shifts Happen so sign up today!
Mon, 16 May 2022 - 12min - 95 - The End Game Ep. 31 - Michael Kao PREVIEW
Joining us in the latest installment of our search for The End Game is Michael Kao, formerly of Goldman Sachs, Canyon Partners and Akanthos and now a family office investor and prolific presence on Twitter, where his many epic threads have sparked debate and educated thousands. In this conversation, we discuss multiple threads of The End Game including the changing dynamics in Japan, where Kuroda-san is belatedly realising what Mick & Keith figured out almost 70 years ago: ‘you can’t always get what you want.’ Elsewhere we cover the changing face of both the oil market and the dollar as Michael highlights brilliantly why it’s time to reverse our thinking about which drives price moves in the other, the Russia/Ukraine situation, China’s options and so much more... Sun, 24 Apr 2022 - 12min - 94 - The Grant Williams Podcast: Mike Rothman - PREVIEW
My guest in the latest episode of the Grant Williams Podcast is the founder of Cornerstone Analytics, Mike Rothman. Mike’s experience in the energy sector is unparalleled - something he demonstrates conclusively in this excellent conversation. In his no-nonsense style, Mike picks apart today’s energy markets - with a particular focus on oil - and explains where consensus is likely right as well as the places that might cause a few surprises. Swiftly putting to rest the widely-held belief of a seamless transition to green energy any time in our immediate future, Mike explains why that misconception is problematic and the likely ramifications once realization dawns more broadly. Sun, 24 Apr 2022 - 12min - 93 - The Grant Williams Podcast: Michael Oliver - PREVIEW
My guest in the latest episode of the Grant Williams Podcast is the founder of Momentum Structural Analysis, Michael Oliver. Over the years, Michael’s proprietary work on the fluctuations in momentum has been extraordinarily good at calling major market inflection points. Where most focus on price, Michael has demonstrated time and again that momentum not only shows a wholly different market-within-a-market, but that the importance of both waning and building momentum is underestimated by the majority of market participants. With many of Michael’s important momentum signals flashing red, this seemed like the perfect time to have him join me for a discussion on what he does, how he does it and the current signals his superb work is sending... My guest in the latest episode of The Grant Williams Podcast is my good friend, Luke Gromen, publisher of Forest For The Trees. With events in Ukraine happening at breakneck speed, the moves by Western nations to isolate Russia through a series of escalating sanctions have revealed weaknesses in the global financial system that bring into sharp focus a set of dominos Luke has been lining up for a number of years. The dollar’s place at the heart of the financial system is now under serious threat after the sanctions placed on Russia’s central bank have fired a warning shot across the bow of every other central bank in the world. What does this mean for gold? Oil? Bond markets? Currencies? Luke lays it all out in brilliant fashion as he explains why the moves of the last two weeks have changed the financial world as we know it forever. Sat, 12 Mar 2022 - 1h 20min - 91 - This Week In Doom Ep. 2 - Rory Johnston PREVIEW
Episode Two of This Week In Doom sees The Chicken and me welcome our first guest, Rory Johnston whose work at his Substack, Commodity Context, is absolutely indispensable and, given the current dynamics in energy markets, looks set to become more so with each passing week. In this fascinating discussion, Rory walks us through the oil industry from some basic concepts to some of the more nuanced factors affecting supply and demand and offers a set of insights rooted in years of experience analyzing the sector for one of Canada’s biggest banks. From pipelines to politics, Rory breaks down the oil & gas sector with the precision of a surgeon, proving exactly why he was the perfect opening guest on This Week In Doom as we try to bring under- followed analysts and content creators to a broader (and deserved) audience... Mon, 21 Feb 2022 - 12min - 90 - The Narrative Game Ep. 6: Metaverse & The Art Of Narrative - PREVIEW
Ben and Grant take a trip into the Metaverse™ to examine how language has been weaponized in an age of Gain of Function research to enable political actors to control the narrative – aided and abetted by Big Tech. Our innate human understanding of the three-act story arc is being used to cajole and persuade the citizens of the world’s largest democracies to act in very distinct fashion in order to maintain control, but how many of us see through the smokescreen laid by mainstream media and understand the forces aligned against us? Ben explains the very deliberate way in which we are being desensitized towards money and the slippery slope that lays out before us in a deeply thought-provoking conversation that will have you pondering the possibilities long after the podcast ends...
Fri, 18 Feb 2022 - 11min - 89 - The Grant Williams Podcast: Rick Rule - PREVIEW
My guest in the latest episode of the Grant Williams Podcast is one of the true titans of the resource industry, my friend, Rick Rule. Rick has navigated multiple investment cycles in the resource sector and learned every lesson there is to learn about how to (and how not to) invest in natural resources – something which has made his voice an invaluable one in both bull and bear markets alike. In this conversation, we discuss the uranium market and the effect that the Sprott Physical Uranium Trust (SPUT) has had on supply and demand (as well as Rick’s plans for the Uranium Bootcamp on March 19th), plus we look at precious metals as Rick lays out his case for what he believes are the early stages of what may turn out to be another epic bull market in gold and silver. This is the full audio of the first in a brand new series of podcasts featuring my co-host, Doomberg (the little green chicken who could) and a series of occasional guests who we believe will enhance and broaden your understanding of the increasingly complex world surrounding us. Many of these guests will be content creators with smaller audiences than their work deserves to whom we’ll hopefully be able to offer a platform in order to help raise awareness of their work, as well as introducing our audience to great new talent. In this first episode, we talk about recent pieces we’ve both written - fleshing out the ideas contained within them and discussing the feedback we’ve received. From crypto to energy markets and the use of both propaganda and censorship, there’s plenty into which we can sink our teeth (and beaks)... Wed, 02 Feb 2022 - 1h 00min - 87 - The Grant Williams Podcast: Adam Rodman - PREVIEW
My guest on this episode of The Grant Williams Podcast is my mate, Adam Rodman of Segra Capital in Dallas Texas. Adam is one of the most fascinating hedge fund managers I’ve met in the last decade with an ability to sniff out and structure the kinds of trades that are just a little too complicated for the average manager. In the past he and I have had some incredibly interesting conversations about everything from Irish real estate to Pakistani power production and, in this episode, we look at another place Adam and Segra have been putting capital to work for several years: uranium. With uranium becoming the focus for many investors in recent months, Adam offers some timely perspective based on his fund’s significant headstart in the space. My guest on this episode of The Grant Williams Podcast is my great friend, Simon Mikhailovich, the founder of The Bullion Reserve and a man to whom I turn any time I want an insight into either the gold market or, as you’ll see, the latest moves by Russia to try and engineer a change in the status quo – both political and geographical. In this wonderful conversation, Simon shares his thoughts on Vladimir Putin’s latest attempts to bring the West to heel, offers some highly illuminating history lessons on how Russia has been viewed by Western leaders over multiple centuries and tries to lay out what both the man and the country might be trying to achieve. There’s also time for a little update on the current state of physical gold markets as Simon shares what he’s being told by refiners and investors alike... My guest on the latest episode of The Grant Williams Podcast is Jacob Shapiro, the Founder and Chief Strategist of Perch Perspectives. With geopolitics becoming both impossible to ignore and increasingly complex, it was a perfect time to char with Jacob about two of the most pressing (and polarising) geopolitical situations facing the world today: Vladimir Putin’s stand-off with Ukraine and Xi Jinping’s potential plans for Taiwan. Jacob brings a wealth of insight to what was a truly fascinating conversation as he weighed up the likely paths available to all the actors enmeshed in these situations and handicapped the likelihood of a series of potential outcomes. As we move into a new year, I’m delighted to welcome an old friend, Simon Hunt, to the podcast to kick off what could be yet another dramatic twelve months. Simon has been spending several months each year on the ground in China for almost three decades and has built an extraordinary network which gives him unique insight into the reality behind countless opinions offered by distant ‘analysts’. In this hugely enjoyable hour, we discuss what’s really happening in the Middle Kingdom, the importance of strengthening of ties between Russia, China, Iran and other Middle Eastern countries against a backdrop of a U.S. retrenchment, the possible size of Russian and Chinese gold reserves as well as Simon’s latest thoughts on the copper market - something about which his knowledge is extensive. This was the perfect way to kick of 2022. Happy New Year to you all! Wed, 05 Jan 2022 - 12min - 83 - The Grant Williams Podcast: Felix Zulauf - PREVIEW
Grant welcomes his old friend Felix Zulauf back to the podcast to discuss Felix’s outlook for 2022 and beyond. In another masterclass of macro thinking, Felix explains his bi-directional view of markets, which encompasses both booms and busts, inflation and deflation between now and 2024 when he expects we will witness an historical top in markets. The two discuss global real estate markets and why they are an enormous source of systemic vulnerability, the options facing China as it seeks to adapt to a new paradigm, gold and cryptocurrencies, Europe’s growing problems and much, much more. As always, Felix is thought-provoking, clear and extremely insightful as he runs us through his roadmap for what is shaping up to be an extraordinary few years to come. Fri, 17 Dec 2021 - 12min - 82 - The Grant Williams Podcast: Danielle DiMartino Booth - PREVIEW
My very special guest for this episode of The Grant Williams Podcast is my friend, Danielle DiMartino Booth, the CEO and Chief Strategist of Quill Intelligence LLC. and the author of the bestselling book Fed Up. With Fed Chair Jay Powell’s renomination the source of enormous speculation amidst a concerted push by Beltway powerbrokers to get Lael Brainard ensconced in the corner office at the Marriner S. Eccles Building, and a series of highly distasteful revelations about the private trading activity of several Fed governors (including Powell himself) in the news cycle, Danielle offers the benefit of her intimate understanding of the institution, the politics surrounding it and the individuals involved in the ongoing drama to help us understand the potential outcome and what it might mean for markets. This is a thoroughly entertaining and hugely informative hour that I know you’ll enjoy immensely. Sun, 14 Nov 2021 - 12min - 81 - The Grant Williams Podcast: Julian Brigden - PREVIEW
My guest on the latest episode of The Grant Williams Podcast is my friend, Julian Brigden of MI2 partners – one of the finest macro analysts plying his trade anywhere in the world today. In what turned out to be a wide-ranging and enormously thought-provoking conversation, Julian outlined just how problematic the range of options facing the world’s central banks has become as inflation tightens its grip on the world economy, forcing certain central banks to take policy decisions which run counter to the interests of others for the first time in more than a decade. The knock-on effects for currencies of decisions made around interest rates and any possible steps designed to control yield curves are examined in the wake of the RBA abandonment of its YCC policy in recent weeks and Julian demonstrates just how high the stakes are and just how calamitous any policy mistakes will be at this juncture. This is sobering stuff. Please make sure you’re sitting down while listening! Tue, 09 Nov 2021 - 12min - 80 - The End Game Ep. 28 - Jim Bianco PREVIEW
Jim Bianco of Bianco Research is the latest guest to grace The End Game and what follows is a masterful dissection of Fed policy, interest rate hike probabilities and the reasons why Jim is fully onboard with the inflationary narrative. Jim explains what he’s seeing in the data to suggest that it may well be time to adjust portfolios to deal with a very different problem to those faced over the last four decades and outlines just how problematic the situation facing the Fed has become. There’s also a fascinating discussion about cryptocurrencies’ place in The End Game and a breakdown of how DeFi offers a bright future - one which, according to Jim, may well not include any Central Bank Digital Currencies. Sun, 07 Nov 2021 - 12min - 79 - The Grant Williams Podcast: Dave Dredge - PREVIEW
My guest in this episode of The Grant Williams Podcast is Dave Dredge of Convex Strategies in Singapore - a man with whom I had several epic conversations during my time at Real Vision. This time, our discussion was sparked by a recent monthly letter Dave published which examined the recent US withdrawal from Afghanistan and used it to look at financial markets through the prism of ‘self-organized criticality.’ Dave’s ability to communicate complex ideas with brilliantly-chosen metaphors is to the fore in what was a hugely engaging conversation that will leave you with much to ponder. Be sure to download the letter which sparked this conversation at the link provided below - it will provide invaluable background to yet another fantastic hour of rich discourse. https://convex-strategies.com/2021/09/22/risk-update-august-2021/ As a reminder, Silver Tier subscribers to https://grant-williams.com get access to both Things That Make You Go Hmmm… and all editions of The Grant Williams Podcast, including The End Game, The Super Terrific Happy Hour, and The Narrative Game.

Wed, 29 Sep 2021 - 15min - 76 - The Grant Williams Podcast: Daniel Want, Prerequisite Capital Management - PREVIEW
My guest in the latest edition of The Grant Williams Podcast is my friend, Daniel Want, the Chief Investment Officer of Prerequisite Capital Management in Brisbane Australia. Daniel is truly a unique thinker - something I recognized in his written work and then had conclusively reinforced the first time we sat down to chat in person several years ago in Sydney. After watching a recent Investment Committee meeting Daniel very kindly shared with me, I wanted to have him join me on the podcast to allow a wider audience to understand his framework and current thinking. What followed was yet another eye-opening discussion which, I suspect, will have you rethinking many aspects of your own investment framework. Tue, 14 Sep 2021 - 12min - 75 - The End Game Ep. 27 - Harley Bassman PREVIEW
Joining Bill and Grant this time on The End Game is Harley Bassman of Simplify Asset Management. In a lively discussion, Harley slaps both Bill and Grant around with alacrity as he picks apart the connection between rates and inflation, the likely level of understanding at the Federal Reserve about the problems they’re creating, the importance of convexity (and the level to which it’s misunderstood) and what investors need to do to protect themselves. From term surfaces to the TIPs market, Harley demonstrates time and again why he’s one of the most important voices in today’s markets and ensures that, if this is your first exposure to him, you’ll be paying careful attention to what he says going forward. Mon, 06 Sep 2021 - 12min - 74 - The Grant Williams Podcast: Tim Grover, Attack Athletics - PREVIEW
This edition of The Grant Williams Podcast is a little different - delightfully so. My guest is Tim Grover, the CEO of Attack Athletics and the author of two phenomenal books Relentless and, most recently, W1nning. Tim will be familiar to any of you who were, like me, NBA geeks during the careers of both Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant thanks to the work he did with both of those great champions - helping them build and strengthen not just their bodies to withstand the physical toll of a gruelling NBA season, but also their minds - enabling these two incredible athletes to handle the extraordinary pressure that comes with being an era-defining global superstar and build a winning mentality that saw them both rise above the incredible talent all around them to become the most dominant figures in one of the most highly-competitive, athletic leagues in all of sports. Tim explains the secret to building a winning mentality, the sacrifices that have to be made and how to deal with both victory and defeat in a manner which allows you the freedom to put setbacks behind you and move forward with a single-minded purpose. The lessons Tim has both learned from and taught to the world’s greatest athletes offer so much to anyone fortunate enough to hear them and apply them to their own daily lives - whether at home, or at work. The parallels with the world of investing are there for all to see and the candour and clarity with which Tim shares the methods he’s developed over 30-plus years working with elite athletes is beyond refreshing. Tim’s book, Winning is available in all the usual places and I honestly can’t recommend it highly enough. As you’ll hear in our conversation, I’m hardly the target audience for Tim’s work, but I found it to be enormously compelling and incredibly thought-provoking and I know you’ll feel similarly after listening to what comes next. Mon, 23 Aug 2021 - 12min - 73 - The End Game Ep. 26 - Michael Howell PREVIEW
In the financial market context, the word ‘liquidity’ is three very distinct things: overused, misunderstood and crucially important. In the latest edition of The End Game, CrossBorder Capital’s Michael Howell joins Bill and Grant to shed some light on those three key factors, explaining how he views liquidity, why it’s so crucial and what he’s observing in global liquidity flows at the present time as well as outlining the similarities between today and previous episodes where liquidity flows offered key clues to the future path of risk asset prices. The importance of China’s policy actions are explained as is the recent turbulence in the reverse repo market plus, when Michael explains how global capital markets have shifted away from being a financing mechanism to something altogether different, Bill has an ‘aha moment’. This is yet another tremendous conversation as the search for The End Game continues. Sun, 08 Aug 2021 - 12min - 72 - The End Game Ep. 25 - Kyle Bass PREVIEW
The latest guest to grace The End Game is the familiar voice of Kyle Bass, Founder and Chief Investment officer of Hayman Capital Management in Dallas, TX. Kyle, Bill and Grant discuss Kyle’s thoughts on what The End Game may look like, with the recent outbreak of inflation likely to play a major part in the transition from the current financial system to whatever comes next. Kyle explains why he thinks time has run out for central banks, what he believes they’ll be forced to do and how investors should try to protect themselves against the likely outcome: deeply negative real rates. Kyle shares the stories of two private meetings with BoJ governors, explains why and how his Rational Investor Paradox ended up confounding its detractors and, of course, offers his thoughts on China, the current and future path of U.S. policy towards their rising rival and the potential pitfalls for the world of a swiftly-reopening economy. Another wonderful addition to The End Game series. Mon, 02 Aug 2021 - 12min - 71 - The End Game Ep. 24 - Greg Jensen PREVIEW
Our special guest on the latest edition of The End Game is Greg Jensen, the co-CIO of Bridgewater Associates, the $140billion asset manager based in Westport, Connecticut. Over his 25 year career at the firm, Greg has spent an inordinate amount of time using historical precedents to construct ever-more complex algorithms to help understand and predict evolving market dynamics. In this fascinating discussion, Greg digs deep into the current macro environment, explaining at length how Bridgewater’s framework helps them evaluate the predicament facing the world’s central banks and formulate a set of likely outcomes in terms of both policy and market response. The death of the ‘transitory’ narrative, the lessons to be learned from previous periods of disruption and the advantages the shrinking set of options available to policymakers offer investors all come under the microscope as we get an insight into the investment process behind one of the world’s largest pools of capital. The Super Terrific Happy Hour returns with Steph Pomboy up a mountain in bear country contemplating all kinds of fascinating data points and dissecting them in her own inimitable way. The conversation is filled with F-bombs as Grant and Steph ponder a cornucopia of topics from fundamentals to ‘flations to the Fed, froth and flawlessness (or lack of it). Steph busts out some remarkable stats that will have you scratching your head as you watch markets look through the reality and embrace the fantasy that all is well and there’s nothing to worry about. The housing market comes under the microscope as does the vital importance of the investing public embracing the idea that inflation is ‘transitory’. Sun, 25 Jul 2021 - 12min - 69 - The Grant Williams Podcast: David Dorr, Coro Global, Dorr Asset Management - PREVIEW
Recently, my journey of understanding has taken me into a few shady corners of the cryptocurrrency universe and this week, I make my last foray into that world (for the time being, at least) as I talk to David Dorr, co-Founder of Coro Global and Dorr Asset management and a man who gave me so much to think about in this enormously engaging conversation. David explains why the way in which the U.S. correspondent banking system works is perhaps the most underestimated facet of the crypto space, why he believes ‘tokens are broken’, the likelihood that bitcoin will soon be obsolete (though something transformative will rise from its ashes) and the promise offered by tokenless Distributed Ledger Technology. David’s combination of knowledge, experience and skepticism is tremendously powerful and what he has to say will, I suspect, captivate you the same way it did me. Mon, 19 Jul 2021 - 12min - 68 - The Grant Williams Podcast: The Tether Discussion feat. Bennett Tomlin & George Noble - FULL EPISODE
My recent foray into the world of the stablecoin tether and the companies and personalities surrounding it has been utterly fascinating. I’ve seen many curious things during my career but the seemingly blatant nature of what certainly seems, at face value, like a gigantic fraud, has astonished me. In the recent June edition of Things That Make You Go Hmmm..., I dove into Tether (the company), Bitfinex and tether (the coin) and what I found blew my mind. Much of my research was built upon the work of a group of tether skeptics, one of whom, Bennett Tomlin, agreed to join me for this discussion to hopefully bring the story to wider attention. It’s worth pointing out that Bennett is not a crypto-skeptic, but what he’s uncovered is a complex web of deceit and obfuscation that will, I suspect, take your breath away like it did mine. Joining Bennett and myself is George Noble, a hugely experienced hedge fund manager with an extraordinary track record. Like Bennett, George is not anti-crypto, but his own work on Tether has led him to similar conclusions. Hopefully, this discussion between a stalwart of the financial industry and a man who has immersed himself deep in the crypto world can help both sides understand each other better and you to gain a perspective on what could well become the biggest story in crypto in the coming weeks and months... As a companion piece to this discussion, for a limited time, I’m making BOTH this podcast, in its entirety, and the June edition of Things That Make You Go Hmmm..., Schrödinger’s Coin, free to non-subscribers. Sun, 11 Jul 2021 - 1h 23min - 67 - The Grant Williams Podcast: Dylan Grice, Calderwood Capital - PREVIEW
My guest this week is the founder of Calderwood Capital, the author of Popular Delusions and my friend, Dylan Grice. Dylan’s ability to not only think about the financial world in unconventional ways, but to communicate those thoughts clearly and effectively has placed his writing in the very top echelon of the research world. Now, with the founding of Calderwood Capital, Dylan has an investment vehicle through which he can take advantage of his unique, idiosyncratic ideas. In this conversation, we hear Dylan’s views on the inflation/deflation debate, his thoughts on Uranium’s place in the ESG debate and how, in order for investors to take advantage of the opportunities currently presented by the markets, they likely need to get more creative and go to places which might make them feel uncomfortable. We also take advantage of Dylan dropping the C-bomb to discuss you-know-what...
