We usually think of happiness in a positive sense, meaning that by adding certain elements to our lives the state of happiness will be attained. And that might be money, possessions, knowledge, fame, recognition, friends, or whatever. But maybe we’ve been going about it all wrong. Happiness through subtraction rather than happiness through addition seems counterintuitive but especially in the context of feelings thoughts and emotions, sometimes it’s getting rid of the ones that are hurting us that causes happiness rather than adding the ones that could help us. It’s hard to feel free and light with a baggage weighing you down, and the case could be made that all of the things you are attempting to add to your life in order to be happy will just end up burdening you more.

This Surah is entitled Ar Rahman, the word with which it begins. This title, however, deeply relates to the subject matter of the Surah too, for in it, from the beginning to the end, the manifestations and fruits of Allah's attribute of mercy and grace have been mentioned.

The Surah derived its name from the word an-Naba in the second verse. This is not only a name but also a title of its subject matter, for Naba implies the news of Resurrection and Hereafter and the whole Surah is devoted to the same theme.

Sūrat al-Burūj (Arabic: البروج‎, "The Great Star") is the eighty-fifth chapter (sura) of the Quran with 22 verses.

One of the greatest blessings of faith is the fact that everything Allah decrees for the believer, whether in ease or hardship, will be good for him. If he experiences ease, he remains grateful and is rewarded. If he experiences hardship, he remains patient and is rewarded.

Anything you repeat. Anything you keep telling yourself again and again and again, they form into subconscious beliefs that become the reality that we tell ourselves. First others tell them to us and then we tell them to ourselves. When we start telling them to ourselves, thats when it becomes problematic. The noise of others drowns our voice.

The month of Allah Muharram is a great and blessed month. It is the first month of the Hijri year and is one of the sacred months concerning which Allah the Almighty says (interpretation of the meaning): “Verily, the number of months with Allah is twelve months (in a year), so was it ordained by Allah on the Day when He created the heavens and the earth; of them four are Sacred, (i.e. the 1st, the 7th, the 11th and the 12th months of the Islamic calendar). That is the right religion, so wrong not yourselves therein” [Soorat at-Tawbah 9:36].

This was a talk delivered just before officiating the marriage of a close student of mine. The reflections deal with unconditional love. In the purest sense, unconditional love is about caring about the happiness of another person without any concern for how it benefits you. Research tells us that the parts of the brain that light up during unconditional love are similar to those involved in romantic love and maternal love, and are linked to the brain's reward system. This suggests that unconditional love may be rewarding without receiving anything in return. So how important is this vital ingredient? Listen in to find out!
