African diaspora history has been either completely ignored or deliberately misconstrued to the point that the descendants are in a constant identity crisis. Realizing this, Quineka Ragsdale knew that a tool was needed to not only teach her children, but also others. Therefore, she decided to create one.
The Dallas native realized that she had a love for writing since an elementary student. She also embraced history as a vehicle that unlocked answers from the past. Quineka wouldn’t merge the two until she discovered that the understanding of the current African American plight was laced within the stories of African diaspora history.
Raised in the Oak Cliff area of Dallas, Quineka attended DISD public schools throughout her traditional schooling and eventually received a bachelor’s degree in Journalism from the University of North Texas in Denton. Quineka began writing the Demarcus Jones book series in 2010. Her natural love for history and writing flowed into a fictional character who brings mystery, adventure and excitement intertwined with historical facts. The series currently includes four installments with history spanning across every inhabited continent over the course of thousands of years. The reading level for the Demarcus Jones series is ages 9-12 and the series is available in paperback, e-book and audiobook formats.
Quineka continues to create historical products that inspire youth, through her company CJK Publishing. She travels all over the country to share CJK Publishing’s mission of telling our stories through our eyes. Joining us from the virtual studio in Connecticut, JaVon Stokes talks about his passion for graphic and sequential arts and 3D animation. He always had a love for comic books, and credits his early introduction to comics as the reason for his accelerated reading at an early age.
His mother was a well-known painter in the Connecticut and the New England area, and he was introduced to the arts by her skill and artistic contributions. She saw he was interested and good at drawing and creating comics, so she pushed him into art programs which further developed his skills.
He has always worked for himself since high school creating art products and doing projects for a fee, so being his own boss was all he’s ever known. He also shares his views on balancing out the highs and lows of being a business owner and entrepreneur, and how he’s driven to make the arts exciting again.
We got into a discussion about his comic book Heat and he tells us how he developed the character and the storyline which was a pretty dope process. Diversity is always important, and his focus is the inclusion and representation of black women and men in the comic universe, and getting their stories told. He’s excited about a few new projects he’s working on, and looks forward to displaying them on his website.

If you listen to the radio or play the clubs in the DFW area, then you've probably heard our studio guest bless your ears with classic hip hop music! DJ Menace sits down with us to discuss his passion for rockin crowds, making beats, and spittin rhymes on the mic.
We discussed the beginning and how at the early age of 11, he fell in love with hip hop. After listening to the Rakim track Microphone Fiend, he knew at that moment the hip hop culture would be a major part of his life moving forward.
He shares stories of making music with some well known artists like Killer Mike and Talib Kweli, and how hip hop in itself has allowed him to build relationships with some pretty dope individuals in the industry. He also shares how stressful it can be as a DJ when your sole responsibility is to make people move and enjoy themselves in the club, at a party, or even just listening to the radio. There's a short window to grab the audience's attention, and you have to take full advantage or lose the moment forever.
RADIO IS NOT A CONSPIRACY...IT'S A BUSINESS!! DJs are playing the music that is in high demand and that the people want to hear. You might get lucky and have someone like Menace on the 1s and 2s sliding in some classic hip hop and hidden jewels that might not be known to the mainstream, so tune in! The ladies of the Quad take over in this "Lady's Night" episode! In the studio with us we have Lisa Love of Love Wrapz and she shares with us how she got into the head wrapping business. She also blesses us with a live wrapping demo in studio!
We discussed how the head wrapping game has evolved from just women taking shirts and wrapping it in a bun to today with the patterns ranging from simple black and white to extravagant African prints. We are also seeing a rise in men and children wearing wraps for style and fashion purposes.
What began as a hobby has since turned lucrative, and her expertise and skill in wrapping her own hair gained the interest of those around her. She turned her interest and skill into a business that she is very passionate about, but do not be mistaken. It is a lot of work and faith that keeps her moving forward.
From high buns to pineapple styles, love wrapz is way for all to express their individuality, culture, and spirituality. The head wrap is not something everyone feels comfortable with at first, so we encourage you to check out Love Wraps and let Lisa tightened you up! Getcha head wrapped right...THE QUAD WAY!

The QUAD Podcast has proclaimed July 23, 2018, "Check on your Strong Friend Day"
On this episode The Quad sat down with the mental health guru, LaToya Smith. She is a Mental Health Therapist, Licensed Professional Counselor, and the Owner of LCS Counseling and Consulting Agency in the DFW area.
Mental health in the black community is a conversation we need to have often. There’s never enough information on the subject, and we should encourage those who are able to seek counseling as a matter of continuous mental health, not just when something is wrong.
With the recent suicides of Anthony Bourdain and Kate Spade, mental health has become a hot topic, but are we taking the right steps to make sure our mental wellness is in check, as well as those closest to us? Absolutely Adia discusses her recent experience with her own mental health crisis, and Ashli Nicole opens up about dealing with a relative with mental health issues. Listen to this episode with someone you care about, share with others who may not be near, and be sure to check on your strong friends.

On this episode of the Quad, we are joined by a great human being, writer, and poet from Bryan Texas, Mr. Justin "I Do Me".
We discussed his start in the game of poetry and how growing up in the church got him accustomed to sharing his talents in front of crowds. We also get into his travels throughout the United States and overseas sharing his message through his poetry while being a "voice for the mute".
Justin has been through his share of challenges in life, and this made him the individual he is today: unfiltered transparent and true to himself! During today's episode he shares with us his religious roots and family upbringing as well as some of his art with a poem called Last Man Standing.
You will hear about the motivation behind the message, and his burning desire to simply contribute his abilities and gifts to better the lives of all who listen. As he stated to us, he doesn't just "do it for likes", he is impacting the world in a positive way, just like we are...THE QUAD WAY!

This funny lady Jennifer Griffin came to the studio accompanied by her husband and shared their life with us. We got into her start in comedy, and how she had to get out of her own way as her husband, who is also a comedian, encouraged her to get on the stage because she too was funny. We discussed her challenges with being a private person while also being transparent when telling her jokes. With her, her husband, 5 children, and 1 on the way, there’s plenty of comedic material to draw from on any given day! They are proud they can chase their dreams together and be a source of support and motivation for each other. It’s also pretty cool that the kids can come to the shows and hear the jokes they help her work on. We also talked about how being a clean comic opens up so many doors for her, and she’s happy she found a lane where she can expand her talent, and make all walks of life laugh with her comedy. Jennifer is out there representing with the big belly until her lil daddy comes in August. We’re happy she chose to come to the studio and chop it up with us before shutting it down until after her child is born. Follow her and hubby and catch a show! And you better laugh too!!!! On this episode, a Doctor is in the house! We invite Higher Education Scholar, STEM Advocate, Policy Enthusiast, and PhD Jared Avery to the studio to ask the all-important question, Is College still really worth it? When you look at the wealth structure in our society, it appears college is the breeding ground for the workforce, not the business owner or entrepreneur. With the amount of the national debt accumulated by students, we have to wrestle with this topic and find some answers. It’s one thing to go to college, yet another to major in courses which allow you to make the salary post -graduation that will help pay back the significant debt you now owe. With the rapid advancements in technology, can colleges prepare and train students for jobs and professions that haven’t even been created yet? Something to think about for sure, AFTER you listen to the show of course! Tune in as Dr. Avery gives a history lesson on the education system.

As the evening progressed, we visited an event hosted by a previous guest from episode 3, Gloria FreeMe Johnson. She hosts a "Freedom Speaks, Conversation Piece" in Dallas on a quarterly basis. The community came together to discuss the topic of being an entrepeneur and running a small business, and how we can continue to support each other while still holding businesses accountable for their products and services. You asked for it, and here it is! In this most professional unprofessional episode, the Quad breaks down Kanye West and the statements that went beyond viral. We discuss his genius and how that in itself can be misunderstood as crazy and deranged. There is no denying his discography and the growth we’ve seen in his music, but are his current statements about slavery being a choice inaccurate or irresponsible? Engineer Spider chimes in about how Kanye’s recent statements are an example of the media using their tactics to keep us divided. The TMZ video was chopped and screwed, then released a snippet with his slavery comment days before the entire video was released for public consumption, and ironically that was one of the points Ye was trying to make in the interview.
Kanye has been acting real Kardashian these days, but is there a bigger issue? Is he doing this for promotion of his many upcoming projects, or is he trying to fight through his mental health challenges? There’s nothing wrong with free thought, but we have to be responsible with our platforms, and be calculated and intentional about what messages we put out there. #KanyeWest2024. #poopityscoop

Music: J LyricMon, 21 May 2018 - 56 - Episode 6: "KOD – Knowledge Over Deception"
Knowledge is information, deception is the act of deceiving. Are teachers intentionally failing to effectively teach our boys, or is the real problem their lack of preparation, education, and training for the classroom?
Is the school system working in the best interest of our children? Alarming statistics suggest the school is merely a pipeline to the prison system for black boys in particular.
Earl Jr. (Dr. E. J.) sits down with us in a discussion about the importance of having a teacher that is well informed and prepared to teach the children. Teachers must understand the idea that with diversity in children, comes diversity in how they learn.
He comes with an extensive background in coaching, mentoring, and teaching. He is a professor training the teachers in courses such as Methods of Teaching Social Studies and Exploring Diversity at the University of North Texas. He has also authored many peer reviewed journal articles addressing topics related to culturally responsive teaching.
In an industry dominated by white females, is the black male teacher an endangered species? Let’s see if we can unpack this subject in Episode 6.

If you ever felt like you’re in a constant battle at work, or war has been waged against you for reasons such as your race, gender, personality, or your style and swag…this episode is YOURS!
Corporate America can be a battle field, and we sit down with a woman who is navigating her way through all the traps, obstacles, and mine fields that one faces while working with the “privileged.” She shares how she prepares herself to prevent from becoming a casualty of corporate war. She also provides us with solutions on how to deal with the madness when you’re leveling up and advancing your career, while also maintaining your individuality and inner peace.
It’s about strength, resilience, and having the courage to address inequalities that confront you. Arriel embodies these traits as a woman of color with power and influence in her field. In Corporate America, you often have to fight with your pen and your words, so she is a voice for those working alongside her, and those that will follow. This Juris Doctor is fully equipped and understands it’s not always about success, sometimes it’s about survival.
