Join us as we delve into another true crime case this week in a neighboring suburb, just south of Denver in the state of Colorado. Just a few miles away from the bustling mountain metropolis is a community with abundant beautiful landscape for outdoor recreation. It’s a family-friendly community that’s also steeped in the rich cultural history of the Gold Rush era and the indigenous people that inhabited the land long before settlers came westward. But of course even the most charming suburban community can become the backdrop for a chilling crime. Still, unlike neighboring Columbine, a community that is sadly no stranger to tragedy, Littleton is rarely center stage for major headline news.


Or, it was - that is, until the mysterious disappearance of Charlene Voight, who was reported missing by her family in Littleton, Colorado on July 8th 2016. As we unravel the details of the case surrounding her disappearance we ponder over how our minds search, and often find, eerie connections in the most disparate of circumstances. Like the discovery of a World War II veteran's dog tags in the Grand River. Get engrossed in our discussion about Charlene's tumultuous and troubling relationship with her partner, Jeffrey. The story takes a hair-raising turn as we we examine Jeffrey's suspicious activities, including his unnerving trip to a landfill that set off alarm bells for investigators. Nothing could prepare us for the the most shocking aspect of the case to date. Jeffrey went on to live a double life after his dramatic escape to Russia, which adds a whole new dimension to this puzzling case. Finally, we take a look at the complex issues surrounding international law and extradition, as well as Jeffrey’s claims of political persecution in his desperate bid to gain asylum.

Twenty eight year old Gordon Church was a kind and gentle young man. He was born in the small town of Fillmore, Utah with a population of 2,592 as of the 2020 census. He was a college student at Southern Utah State College, or SUSC for short, in Cedar City, Utah, the site of The Utah Shakespeare Festival and is now Southern Utah State University. A chance meeting at a convenience store in 1988 turned into a terrifying and deadly night for Gordon and a case full of twists and turns that is ongoing to this day.

It was the summer of 2013 in Campbelltown, New Brunswick, Canada. Noah and Connor Barthe, who were 4 and 6 years old, had spent the day having a blast with family friends at a farm. That evening, they had a sleepover at their best friend's house, which was located just above an exotic pet store that his father owned.

Not all of the animals were kept downstairs in the store. Jean-Claude Savoie owned a 12-foot-long African rock python which was kept in a glass enclosure in the apartment. Somehow, during the night, the python escaped through an air duct. The 100lbs snake broke through the ceiling right above where the boys were sleeping in the living room. The following morning at around 6:30 am, Savoie would walk into the living room to a horrifying scene. The two little boys had been killed - crushed to death by the python.

Their family friends and the community were devastated over the loss of these two very loved children, while the python owner was charged with criminal negligence. He would be found not guilty, surprising some, and relieving others. There are no charges that could ever bring back these two incredible little boys, but there is a lesson here in responsible pet ownership and speaking up when you see something wrong.

Kimberly was a beautiful 18-year-old young woman from Langford, British Columbia, who was taken from this world in one of the cruellest ways by two very troubled teenage boys from school. Kim believed them to be her friends, but after agreeing to meet up, they would sexually assault her, kill her, and set her body on fire in a wooded area. When Kim’s burned body would be discovered by a passerby, the two teens began to panic. But not enough to keep quiet, as one of them confessed to the entire thing to his online girlfriend in the game, World of Warcraft.

There were a lot of red flags before Kim was killed that these two boys were capable of becoming absolute monsters - but they mostly went ignored. This is another cautionary story to parents to monitor what their kids are doing online - because this sadistic plan to kill this young girl just to see how it felt, was all detailed in online chats ahead of time and could have been prevented.

Surviving as a rancher is hard for lots of reasons: land has gotten more expensive, corporate farms have gotten more powerful and put pressure on small ranches to expand their operations to stay in business, inflation has driven up the prices of feed and supplies… But for Nate, and for Black ranchers and farmers across the country, ranching is also hard because the USDA, the government agency that they’re supposed to be able to turn to for support, instead makes it hard for them to get that support.

He did some terrible things over a number of years, but Deb shows us the double-edged sword of life that made him both wealthy and reckless. She elaborates on underlying factors and influences that helped send Aaron in the wrong direction. But whatever the reasons he did the things he did, by Aaron's hand, Odis Lloyd was needlessly killed in cold blood.

Beth follows up with a survivor story from 1986. Laurie Melanson was living in a small town in New York and working in a challenging and fulfilling career. When she met John Brown, it didn't take long for her to realize he wasn't the right guy for her. After she broke it off, though, John became obsessed and violent, assaulting Laurie, stalking her, and finally attempting to kill them both in a murder-suicide. But she was stronger and more determined than he thought she would be, and she fought her way back and used her experience to help people who really needed her understanding.

On April 21, 2020, as the pandemic was just starting to ramp up, Katie Palmer wanted to go for a walk with her husband. This was her first time with her husband to go out and enjoy the fresh air and spend time as a loving couple. She has been described by many as jovial and had a laugh that was contagious, a beautiful smile that felt like sunshine and a presence equally as warm and accepting. But the smile would be forever burned in everyone’s memory as her life was stolen, from her soulmate and her two children, by a man who shouldn’t have been driving.

The Hillside Strangler, or later called the Hillside Stranglers, were American serial killers who terrorized Los Angeles, California, between October 1977 and February 1978, with the nickname originating from the fact that many of the victims' bodies were discovered in the hills surrounding LA. The perpetrators were cousins, Kenneth Bianchi and Angelo Buono Jr., who were eventually convicted of kidnapping, torturing, and murdering 10 women and girls ranging in age from 12 to 28. In Episode 1, we noted a widely held view about the MacDonald murders: namely, that MacDonald’s story is too implausible to be taken seriously. In Episode 2, we ask why. Why does Jeffrey MacDonald’s account of the murders strike so many people as simply not believable?

One answer is that these people have a background understanding of another set of murders that happened six months earlier: namely, the Manson murders. And that understanding is that the Manson murders were a singular, unrepeatable, one-of-a-kind occurrence –– not the kind of thing that happens twice in six months, three thousand miles apart.

On this understanding of the Manson murders, the MacDonald murders become self-explanatory. Jeffrey MacDonald clearly killed his own family and then reached for the lowest hanging fruit in the garden of American popular culture: he tried to peddle the idea that the Mansons –– or people like them –– had murdered his family. Hence the talk of pigs, acid, and the word written in blood.

The question for the historian, then, is obvious: how singular were the Manson murders? Were they, in reality, the product of one madman’s dark vision, or did they emerge from countercultural currents that ran deeper than Charles Manson –– that had, indeed, brought Manson himself screaming to the surface of the popular American imagination?

Gwen Vivian Miller didn’t show up for work on Leap Day, February 29th, 1968. Gwen was 60 years old, had no children, and ran the pharmacy at Bennett–Clarkson Memorial hospital, now known as Regional West in Rapid City, South Dakota.

Despite her independence, though, Gwen was in declining health and had a history of medical complications due to her diabetes. So, when she didn’t show up for work, two co-workers, thinking she may have gone into insulin shock, went to her house at 3901 Hall Street.

Inside, they found Gwen dead in her bed and it appeared to them that she had died in her sleep.

In the pre-dawn hours of February 17, 1970, military police on the Fort Bragg army base, in North Carolina, received a panicked phone call from a man identifying himself as Cpt. Jeffrey MacDonald. Struggling to get the words out, MacDonald haltingly and breathlessly repeated his address –– 544 Castle Drive –– along with the word “stabbed.” When the MPs arrived at 544 Castle Drive minutes later, they encountered a scene of staggering brutality. MacDonald’s wife and two young daughters had been hacked and beaten to death in their respective bedrooms, there was blood on the walls and ceiling of the apartment, and someone had written the word “PiG,” in blood, on the headboard of the bed in the master bedroom. On seeing that word, “PiG,” military investigators all had the same thought: “PiG” is what had been written in blood on Sharon Tate’s front door six months earlier, after the Manson Family had slaughtered Tate and her houseguests on Cielo Drive, in Los Angeles. Had the Manson Family come to North Carolina?

If Jeffrey MacDonald was to be believed, perhaps they had. MacDonald told investigators that a group of at least three men and one woman had broken into the apartment and attacked him and his family. Although these assailants had stabbed and beaten MacDonald, leaving him with a partially collapsed lung, they had left him alive after knocking him unconscious.

That is, until the next morning… one of the women in attendance was found to be dead under mysterious circumstances. It has been one year since 37-year-old Elnaz Hajtamiri was taken from a home in Wasaga Beach by three armed masked men who were dressed in police gear. She has not been seen or heard from since January 12, 2022, and the police are now offering a $100,000 reward for any information leading to finding Elnaz.

Her abduction is made even more by the fact that less than a month prior to this incident, two men had attempted to pull Elnaz into their vehicle. She fought like hell and managed to escape with her life - only to have three men abduct her at gunpoint just weeks later. Once you hear the details of this case, you’ll understand why we need to share it as much as possible, wherever we can. Someone knows something. Elnaz’s family just wants her home.

Frank Canton was not born; he was created. The mental fabrication of a notorious outlaw and escaped convict by the name of Joe Horner.

After possibly killing his first man at the tender age of 15, Horner would spend the next several years as a cowboy and ranch hand before forming the infamous Horner gang, that would terrorize north Texas during the mid-1870s. After a full-on gun battle with the United States military in broad daylight, Horner is arrested but escapes. And, following the successful robbery of at least one bank, Horner was once more apprehended and jailed – this time in San Antonio – and once more escaped. Arrested again after yet another gunfight, Horner would be tried, found guilty and sentenced to 15 years hard labor in Huntsville State Penitentiary. He would only do two of these years, escaping once more – this time never to be seen again. At least not as Josiah Horner.

The escaped convict would travel north, to Wyoming, and reinvent himself. Becoming Frank Canton, the epitome of law and order and a relentless pursuer of neerdoells. First as an inspector and detective for the Wyoming Stock Growers Association and then Sheriff of Johnson County, before being a key player in a little something called the Johnson County War. Canton would then mosey on down to Indian Territory, and once again pin on a badge, first as a sheriff and then as a deputy U.S. Marshal, chasing bad guys Rooster Cogburn style. This was at a time when the Territory was nearly overrun with outlaws and the area Canton was initially stationed in was so bad the county commissioners were asking for martial law. Turns out all they needed was Frank Canton. But then a new frontier beckoned. What some were taking to calling the last Frontier. Alaska. There was gold up there in the great white north and with gold comes crime. More than enough to keep a man such as Canton busy. But what about Frank’s past as an outlaw? The former life of Josiah Horner, the escaped convict? Would this ever catch up with him? And was he really Mr. Law and Order, humble public servant or was this just a façade? A way of him ensuring that he was always aligned with the powerful and influential.

Believe me when I say, this story has it all. Cowboys, outlaws, moral quandaries, Buffalo soldiers, female rustlers, questionable morals, cattle drives, stampedes, a damn range war, a mercenary army, assassinations, murder, a whole lot of hangings, Tom Horn, the Pinkertons, Teddy Roosevelt, hell – even vampires! Yes vampires.

Do you remember the stress of being a teenager?

As an adult, you might fondly look back on that time in your life. You had no bills to pay and no worries about where to live because you were still at home with your parents. You didn’t have to buy groceries – the food was just there. You could get a job if you wanted extra spending money, but you didn’t have to work. Why didn’t we appreciate that time more?

But in reality, teenagers DO worry about things. They worry about grades and whether they’ll be able to get into a good college. And if they do get in and if they can afford it without racking up a ton of school loans. They stress about body image and fitting in with their group of friends, and sometimes some family conflicts can be part of the stress. Then there’s dating and relationships, which is a whole subject. And on top of all that, they are pressured to decide what they want to do with their life.

So despite the fond memories, being a teenager isn’t always easy.

Today you’ll hear my guest, Martine, talk about something she experienced when she was 16. By all accounts, she was a teenager with a pretty good life. She lived in a decent house with her parents and her sisters. She went to school and hung out with friends. Life wasn’t perfect, of course, but she was happy.

She certainly wasn’t worried about her family’s home being invaded by armed men in the middle of the night until it happened.

Sheree Warren left her job in Salt Lake City on a mild October evening in 1985.
She told a coworker she was headed to meet her estranged husband, Charles
Warren, at a car dealership. But she never made it, Sheree vanished. When her
car mysteriously surfaced weeks later, hundreds of miles away in Las Vegas, no
one could say how it got there.

When a young mother disappears under unexplained circumstances, police
always turn suspicious eyes towards the husband. And although there was
distrust around Charles Warren, he wasn’t the only suspect when Sheree went
missing. She also had a boyfriend, a former cop named Cary Hartmann, who
lived a sinister double life.

Season three follows two suspects– men who both raised suspicion for

Hosea Knowlton on the first day of her inquest five days after the suspicious murders of her father and stepmother. She was the last person to see them alive moments before their deaths all tho they occurred two hours apart. She was the only person at the house besides the maid.

Christmas…the most festive time of the year. I have fond memories of decorating the tree, helping my mom with the lights or at least attempting to, hanging the stockings on the mantel, being with family, eating amazing food, and then on Christmas Day - seeing a bounty of presents under the tree with our home being filled with joy, love and laughter.

The subway system in New York City is pretty impressive.

It opened in 1904 so it’s one of the oldest subway systems in the world. And it is definitely the largest, with 472 stations. And throughout its history, the subway has offered service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week almost continuously. The exceptions are usually emergencies and disasters, such as 9/11.

You want to take a guess as to how many people ride the subway, on an average weekday? Go ahead, think of a number. Okay, it’s 5.6 million people. Per day!

The subway system can be a little scary sometimes, but most of the time it’s safe. It’s just a large crowd of individual people, each one needing to get from one location to another location. Many of them will have ear buds in, or be engrossed in a book or newspaper, mostly unaware of what’s going on around them.

What you’re gonna hear today is my conversation with Danny. Back when this happened, he lived in New York City with his partner, Pete. In fact, they still live there.

Danny was one of those people on the subway. Head down, in a hurry because he was running late, just wanted to get off the train and up to the street.

But on this day, he happened to notice something on the floor near the stairs.

It was a baby.

12-year-old Sean Daugherty was discovered hanging from a swing set in his backyard earlier this year. He was dressed in his stepfather's clothing, shoeless and with his glasses missing. His death has been ruled a suicide by the local police force, but once you hear all of the suspicious circumstances and details, you might wonder if this was really the right call. Did Sean take his own life or did someone take it? We don’t know - but I believe with all of the information we have, it is certainly worth taking a close look.

Here in the United States, slavery is illegal. The 13th Amendment to the US Constitution was passed by Congress on January 31, 1865 and it was ratified later that same year.

That amendment reads in part “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States.”

But the fact that it’s illegal doesn’t mean it’s non-existent. The more common modern-day term for it is human trafficking.

The numbers for this are staggering. Hundreds of thousands of people are forced into sexual exploitation just here in the US. And many of them are children.

Ashton Kutcher is an actor, and he’s a father. He’s also become a major activist in the fight against human trafficking, through his foundation and the software that his team has created.

There’s another person who’s also very active in this fight. Her name is Jill. She knows about human trafficking because she was a victim of it. She’s had some truly horrifying experiences – things that no person should ever have to go through.

But she’s still here, and she’s doing everything she can to help put an end to it. And part of that fight is telling the story of what it’s like – from the inside.

I wanted to mention one thing that you might notice while you hear Jill talking about what happened to her. She laughs. She might be describing something that was truly terrifying, but part of talking about it is laughter. She and I actually discussed this, and she is aware of it. It’s not because she looks back on what happened and actually thinks it’s funny. Each of us relates to trauma differently, and a little bit of nervous laughter is just her way of coping as she talks about her experiences.

Emmett Louis Till, was a 14-year-old African American who was lynched in Mississippi in 1955, after being accused of offending a white woman in her family's grocery store. The brutality of his murder and the fact that his killers were acquitted drew attention to the long history of violent persecution of African Americans in the United States.

Terry Carlton is found shot dead in his basement in Tulsa, Oklahoma. When the police arrive, his long-time on-again-off-again fiance, April Wilkens, answers the door. "I shot him, he's in the basement," she says.

But this wasn't exactly an open and shut case. Terry had raped April mere hours before the shooting. It was while he was violating her that he said he was going to kill her and twisted her neck to break it. During the life and death struggle for her life, April knows she had no options--it wasn't a feeling, she had no options.

In 1999, Wilkens was tried by the state of Oklahoma and sentenced by a jury to LIFE. She's now 51-years-old, and 25 years into her sentence. Panic Button is the untold story of the escalating cycles of abuse that led to Terry Carlton's death, and the unthinkable ways survivors of violence get chewed up and spit out by Oklahoma's justice system.

In this first episode, attorneys Colleen McCarty and Leslie Briggs tell the story of the night of the murder, the facts in the record, and April's testimony from the stand at trial.
