Here is our annual Halloween special, and we return to the great Castlevania series, with Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest on the NES! This is easily the most underappreciated of the NES trilogy, mostly because of the cryptic nature of the whole "Where do I go?" style this game portrays. Once you have some type of guide, this game is incredibly fun. The graphics and colors of this game far surpass the original, making this easily one of the best-looking overall games on the NES in 1988.

Another late summer Capcom NES classic, but fortunately for me, this particular game isn't nearly as hard as 1943 was last year. Willow is a flawed, but very enjoyable Zelda style action RPG, that does qualify as a decent port of a pretty good fantasy movie from the late 1980's of the same name! Sorry this review is longer than maybe it should be, but I really enjoyed making this review, after having to temporarily suspend production of Who Framed Roger Rabbit on the NES, which I started way back in early May!

It's time to review the Sega Genesis version of this early '90's classic. The music and overall game play are fantastic, and will bring back many memories of our youth, as we roll through yet another big time Disney game. The controls overall are smooth, but in Castlevania side scrolling style, expect some cheap deaths, to bring up the difficulty!

We return to the Nintendo Game Boy, with one of it's all time classics, Super Mario Lane 2: Six Golden Coins. This game gives you more of a Super Mario World style format, but of course in Game Boy form. The music on this game is very energetic and relaxing at the same time. Despite some slightly jittery controls, this one goes down as one of the best action games on Nintendo's longest lasting system!

We finally venture into the first 16-bit game console, the Sega Genesis, and with one of it's most iconic titles: Golden Axe! Often times, great arcade games ported to home consoles were pretty disappointing, as the game quality would be downgraded by so much, but in this case, Golden Axe on the Genesis did not disappoint!

We finally venture into the legendary Nintendo Game Boy, and there might not be a better title in it's long illustrious history, The Legend Of Zelda: Link's Awakening! This game is incredibly special to your host, who bought it the first few minutes he knew it existed. When you listen to this episode, and get the feel of the entire game, you will be begging to play through this Mount Rushmore level portable masterpiece for yourself!

We go back to the legendary late 80's and early 90's with one of the better action platformers on the NES, without the name "Mario" in it, Chip 'N Dale Rescue Rangers! One of the staples of the Disney Afternoon, being brought to the NES was a definite success, and arguably a more entertaining style than it's predecessor in Duck Tales. This game had more levels, and allowed you to play a co-op style, which was relatively new at the time!

It's the VGF 2023 Christmas Special! This year, Bible Adventures on the NES gets the nod, as believe it or not, this game does provide your host many memories, and is perfect for this time of year. After three straight insanely hard games, I figured it was time to settle down a little bit, and review the very first NES game I ever beat, that game was Breakthru, which was also an arcade game just a year earlier. What makes the game easy is the unlimited continues! Breakthru is also one of the "Original Six" NES games that I ever could call my own, dating back to Christmas 1988!

With that said, Mega Man has it's place in history, not just for being the game that started it all, or being hard as hell, but also the fact that the music, graphics, and yes, the game play is phenomenal for it's time, and more than worth a try, if you dare!

Here it is, the much anticipated Castlevania NES review, and the Halloween special for 2023! This game started it all for Konami, in the massive Castlevania franchise. In a lot of ways, I've always felt that this series should have remained a side scrolling platforming style, because in all honesty, why didn't it? This is Castlevania from my perspective, this VGF podcast refuses to "wing it" and hopefully will deliver a worthwhile listen for gamers of yesteryear, and maybe even of today!

One of the "Original Six" in my Nintendo and video game library, this game has incredible sentimental value for me. As we reach double digit episodes, it's time to start reviewing SNES games, and what better one to begin with than The Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past! This particular project is too large to cram it all in one episode, so after discussing things with confidants, we decided it would be best to split things into three separate episodes. A Link To The Past is yet another great Christmas present, that came with my SNES back in 1992, so this one also has a ton of sentimental value. We have another classic from Capcom, this time based on a very popular weekend afternoon cartoon, Ducktales for the NES! This one was no rental, my brother made sure this was at the top of his Christmas list in 1989, and by gum, regardless the higher price, he got it! This game lived up to the hype in terms of graphics, music, and general gameplay, but maybe, just maybe it could have been better?
