Mon, 14 Oct 2024 - 177 - LIVE Q&A SERIES // How can we teach kids to make good choices? It's actually our super power tool...
When mistakes are judged, shamed and connected to child’s worth + belonging (conditional teaching):
✔️Kids learn to feel shame when they naturally struggle
✔️Kids learn that conflict is binary: good/bad, right/wrong
✔️Kids hold in their feelings + needs out of fear of shame
✔️Kids are more likely to lie, blame, + defend to feel safeWhen mistakes neutrally explored and NOT connected to child’s worth + belonging (unconditional teaching):
✨Kids learn to feel safe when they struggle and grow
✨Kids learn that conflict can be a safe place to learn
✨Kids learn their + others’ needs + feelings matter
✨Kids are more likely to communicate, empathize + innovateGah! We’re all trying to give ourselves grace, patience and love for all the “messing up” we’re doing as adults + parents. ✨Can we try to extend those same things to our kids as they learn and grow, too?
Rather than instinctually repeating the inherited phrasing that was passed down to us from generations before, we give you permission to lean into your kids’ learning moments with the very skills you hope to teach them: curiosity, empathy, humor + innovation — a concerted effort to focus on the NEEDS vs the BEHAVIORS.

October 29th: Workshop at Living Room Realty
From Jen:
Parenting is hard. But when we replace conventional parent-child power dynamics with collaboration, family life gets easier today—and we create a better world for all of us in the future. When our children are stalling, resisting, tantrumming, using mean words, and hitting, we want to make it stop. But discipline methods like time-outs, countdowns, and 'consequences' teach children that it's OK for more powerful people to control others.
Research-based parenting educator Jen Lumanlan offers a simple yet revolutionary framework for rethinking our relationships with children. We can learn to look beneath challenging behaviors to find and meet children's needs, and ours too - perhaps for the first time in our lives. This approach helps us to find solutions to conflicts that work for everyone - in our families, and in the wider world.

Sat, 17 Sep 2022 - 162 - LIVE Q&A SERIES // How do our kids learn best -- connection or control?
Should we believe that using consequences, threats, shame, isolation etc. is the best way to teach + prepare kids for adulthood? NO!
Today’s Q&A explores how we can bravely work to believe that our kids grow best from our CONNECTION, not our CONTROL. Sat, 09 Apr 2022 - 154 - GUEST SERIES // H+K on The 3 in 30 Podcast - 3 tools to support sibs with a new baby
We loved connecting with Rachel of the 3 in 30 podcast about supporting our older siblings when a new baby comes into the family!
From Rachel's show notes:
For all you mamas of one out there, what do you envision when you imagine adding a second baby to your family? And for all of your mamas of multiple out there, what do you remember about adding a second baby to your family? My guests on the podcast today are Hannah and Kelty, the twin sisters and founders of the parenting movement Upbringing. They said this to me and it resonated so deeply that I just had to write it down. Kelty said: “I thought [adding another baby] would mean more love, more snuggles, more squidgy little feet, more laughter, more connection. And it definitely did add all of that! But I didn't realize all the other more things that would happen. More crying, more anxiety, more stress, more messes, more juggling, and more divide and conquer existence with my partner…” Doesn't that sound about right?
Adding a new baby to your family, whether it's your first baby or your fifth, always comes with a lot of emotions and change--all the highs and lows! And that is why today's guests Hannah and Kelty are so passionate about helping families to ease this transition and why they have created an online course called Right From the Start, which supports parents during the first year of a baby's life.
Our Right From The Startbaby videocourse and community is now OPEN for enrollment! The course will bring you both the reassurance AND information you need in your baby’s first year to make the decisions that are uniquely right for your family. ✨ No prescribed rules, no perfection to attain… Just the essentials to help you move forward with clarity and confidence.

Mon, 21 Feb 2022 - 149 - LIVE Q&A SERIES // Tame Your Triggers, feel less flooded, approach your kids without losing it!
Every feel flooded? Triggered? Too emotionally hijacked to respond calmly to your kids' big feelings and challenging behaviors? Join our conversation with Jen Lumanlan of Your Parenting Mojo to talk about ways to calm our minds and bodies so we don't keep losing our shit on our kids!
Jen explores ways we can stop cycles of trauma and begin healing through our parenting practices. Her Taming Your Triggers Course is LIVE! This is the course we ALL need to be able to lean in with calm clarity to support our kids through their big feelings and challenging behaviors. CLICK TO LEARN MORE! Sliding scale pricing available -- Doors close Wednesday, February 23rd!
Taming Your Triggers is a research-based approach that provides a solid foundation of tools and provides support, a nonjudgmental presence, and even lasting friendship through the community.
When you join the Taming Your Triggers workshop, you'll learn:
- What is a trigger, and how to identify yours
- How to help your child WANT to cooperate with you, so you don't have to lose your cool
- Where triggers come from - examining previously experienced trauma, as well as the stresses of daily life
- How to use mindfulness (in just a few minutes a day!) to help you avoid being triggered in the first place, and respond more effectively when you are occasionally still triggered
- How to recognize when you're in frame of mind that makes you susceptible to feeling triggered, and take specific steps to make yourself more trigger-proof

Thu, 17 Feb 2022 - 148 - LIVE Q&A SERIES // Triggered by messes, screaming in the car, sibling fights, not listening, being bullied!
Feeling triggered by your kids' big feelings and challenging behaviors? Doors are open for the Taming Your Triggers Workshop by Your Parenting Mojo! We LOVE taking this workshop and can't recommend it enough to our community.
This is the last week to sign up… Learn more about the amazing elements of the workshop HERE! We are so excited to begin with you, so make sure to register by Feb 23!
Taming Your Triggers is a 10-week workshop for parents who have big reactions to their child’s (mis)behavior, and who want to change their interactions with their child. Instead of focusing on the child’s behavior, the workshop helps parents to understand the true sources of their triggered feelings (which often lie in the trauma they’ve experienced as children), begin to heal themselves, and learn more effective ways to interact with their children in difficult moments.
Each week they receive a short module of content to read and a homework assignment. They join a supportive online community (not on Facebook!) and have the option to pair up with a partner to hold each other (gently!) accountable to achieve the benefits they sign up for.
LEARN MORE HERE! Register by February 23rd!

Sat, 20 Nov 2021 - 137 - GUEST SERIES // H+K on The Peace & Parenting Podcast - Redefining Parenting: Cooperation, Not Control
Tune in for our interview with Michelle of The Peace and Parenting podcast (https://pca.st/CkuZBG) Subscribe and follow to find out how to come to parenting through the lens of connection and cooperation as she navigates through a parenting topic each week. Michelle is a mother of two girls, as well as a former teacher and counselor turned Certified Parenting Instructor.
In today's episode, Michelle has us on to discuss a new approach to connecting with our kids, so we can raise young adults that have a stronger sense of self and a more stable approach to life.
We explore why we believe that by choosing to connect with our kids instead of controlling them, it can result in a relationship that positively reinforces self-discipline and accomplishing tasks for themselves-- instead of them simply following our words.
Episode Highlights:
Who We AreThe parenting dynamics of oldWhy the old dynamics need to changeWhat you can do instead of power-parentingFocus on building relationships with your kidsHow to approach your kids to get a better responseKids and their safe spacesRelevant Links:
