Not much to say about today’s show, except that it’s a miracle I’ve managed to get it together at all. Here’s a tip for any nerds out there, if you use Filevault protection on your Mac and then upgrade the hard drive, the maximum size of your home folder is still based on the old disk! Despite having 300GB free I was unable to write any new files to my drive. Including the file for the podcast. Yikes! Anyway, after a quick clean out I’ve been able to save the file, but I supposed I should fix it properly… But not tonight.
On today’s show a great blues track by Blind Willie Johnson from 1927. Surely the oldest track I’ve played on the show. There’s a shoegaze tribute to the current Doctor Who companion (yes, you heard that right), and we end with a blistering track from the new Mogwai album (do they do anything other than blistering tracks?). Lots more music besides, and unfortunately for you, chat.
Also mentioned in today’s podcast… I did an interview with Chris Hynd for his Plentyside blog. If you really want to, you can read that interview here. I also mention the Kid Canaveral SXSW fundraiser with The Last Battle this Saturday night at The Wee Red Bar at Edinburgh College of Art. You can buy tickets for that online, or if you’re in town you buy them at Avalanche Records with no booking fee.
Oh, and did I mention the podcast is a year old this week! No? Well it is. Happy birthday podcast…

My ears are still ringing from the Come On Gang launch album gig on Saturday night. But I just about managed to hear enough to pull together this podcast.
Outrageously, I didn’t notice the multiple “Astronaut” references in today’s show, not sure how I missed that. Anyway, there’s loads of great music, including two tracks from Edinburgh bands. A wonderful track from the aforementioned Come on Gang closes the show, and we start with a great pop song from Cancel the Astronauts. In between, lots of music including some acoustic indie folk from The Mean Faced Boy, and track from ex-Seattleite Justin Ripley‘s new Just Just album “No More Vintage”.

How exciting! I’ve just discovered uneaten (although slightly broken) Christmas chocolate in the cupboard, so it’s a chocolate fuelled podcast. Surely one of the best kinds.
On today’s show, I’m recovering from a slightly sleepless weekend as a result of clanking hotel radiators. But there’s lots to wake me up, including another track from the upcoming Twilight Singers album, a wonderful sounding track from The Beets on Captured Tracks, and we end with a brilliant song on Cake and Tapes from Sutcliffe Catering Co.
But finally, and something I totally forgot to mention in the show, is that this Saturday is the final ever gig – and the launch party for their debut album – from Edinburgh’s Come On Gang. You can still get tickets for only £5 at WeGotTickets.

It seems to be ridiculously stormy outside in Edinburgh as I record this. I even got covered with snow on the way into work today. Crazy. Anyway, I’m tucked away in the back room, since this seems to have the least amount of wind and rain battering on the window. It still manages to distract me during the show though. Unfortunately Hipstamatic can’t really capture the full force of a stormy Scottish night, so here’s a photo of my desk in the back room instead. Complete with a Marmite brand mug of tea.
On today’s show we start with a track from ex-Sleater-Kinney singer Corin Tucker, a brilliant song from Schwervon! who are currently on tour in the UK with The Vaselines, and we play not one, not two, but three tracks from Scottish bands! Including the first song off the new album by The Son(s).
Podsafe music in this episode is played courtesy of Kill Rock Stars, Olive Juice Music, Olive Grove Records, The Last of Barrett’s Privateers. Tracks 3 is released under Creative Commons licences. Edinburgh Man Podcasts is a member of the Association of Music Podcasting.

2. Magnetic Island – “Shake The Fog” (download track free from bandcamp)

The school holidays in Scotland are still dragging on – we’re about two thirds of the way through now I reckon. I’m not going to check in case I’m wrong. Let’s just say (hope) that we are nearer the end than the start and leave it at that.
The kids, in their child-like innocence, expressed a desire to go camping this summer. So rather than commit to a whole week of nature, we’re going away for a few days here and there. Last weekend was the first of these. Being Scotland in the summer meant it was wet. Perhaps that’s unfair, it was nice the day we pitched the tent, and then from about halfway through the first night it rained until we left. I’ve just finished drying out a very wet tent on a tarp in the back garden, in time for us to do it all again in a few days time… Remind me, when do the schools go back?

With Kurt Braunohler
It’s the last weekend of the Edinburgh Fringe 2011. Thankfully. I’m not sure how much longer I could have kept going. This week I’ve been to shows on all but one of the days. Gordon is back, and impressively he has been to some shows too! Outrageous.
It’s basically a round up of what we’ve seen, we ramble about our favourite bits of the festival, play some music, and talk about things that you could go and see in the last few days. There’s also a fun chat with comedian Kurt Braunohler, who is performing at the brilliant variety show Hot Tub with Kurt and Kristen with his comedy partner Kristen Schaal. You only have a few hours left to go and see it, because it’s their last show tonight. But it’d be worth it.
Finally this week’s Hipstamatic was from Withered Hand’s glorious “homecoming” gig at the Queen’s Hall on Thursday night. Hearing a massive crowd of people singing along to Religious Songs and No Cigarettes was incredible.
Warning: May contain some swears. I forget to say this in the show. But then, I forget to say a lot of things in the show.

With Josie Long and Shambles Miller
Another podcast from the Edinburgh Fringe! We’re more than halfway through, but the fringe is really taking it’s toll. So much so that we’re one presenter down! Gordon has done a runner. The podcast and his Fringe schedule collided today, so you’ve just got me instead.
Actually, that’s not true. You’ve got me, and Shambles Miller, and Josie Long! Two interviews on the podcast today. I chat to Josie Long about her brilliantly funny and politically charged show “The Future Is Another Place” which is on at the Pleasance Dome until Sunday the 28th (not the 22nd). It’s not all politics, we also talk swimming, and nerd out a little bit while chatting about Scottish indie music.
Shambles Miller came over to Edinburgh last week to play a secret gig in the Blind Poet bar. We had a great chat afterwards, but beforehand, in torrential rain, Shambles played an acoustic track while sheltering in an alleyway off the Grassmarket. It’s the first ever exclusive recording for the show! And it’s re-assuringly lo-fi, with sounds of wind, rain and traffic in the background! You can see Shambles playing live during the Fringe in a real venue too. He’s supporting Jack Savoretti at Cabaret Voltaire as part of the Edge Festival.
Podsafe music in this episode is played courtesy of IODAPromonet / Song by Toad, Sub Pop, Cancel the Astronauts, IODAPromonet / Fortuna POP!, Shambles Miller and IODAPromonet / Armellodie Records. Edinburgh Man Podcasts is a member of the Association of Music Podcasting.

One week into the fringe and the festival is starting to hit its stride. Gordon, of course, still hasn’t been to any shows. But no matter, I went to five in one day yesterday, and I’m feeling the strain a bit today. We’ve moved outside, lured by the promise of some sun that didn’t really materialise. The Edinburgh wind however did… as demonstrated by the buffeting on the microphone. Apologies for that. Hopefully you can still hear our ramblings. Anyway, there are reviews today, especially for some of the free fringe shows. And also a few tips for getting into the rather busy free fringe shows. Don’t say we don’t provide a public service.
Finally, with massive thanks to Avalanche Records, we talk to David from Kid Canaveral. They’ve had a hectic year so far including playing SXSW along with King Creosote, and signing to Fence Records to re-release their brilliant debut album SHOUTING at Wildlife. But more importantly, in terms of the Fringe at least, they are playing at The Liquid Rooms tomorrow night along with Over The Wall and Admiral Fallow. Get your tickets here!
Today’s Hipstamatic is a bit of a cheat! It’s from the Kid Canaveral in-store at Avalanche Records a few weeks back, but it seems like an appropriate image for this show.

It’s the Edinburgh Festival Fringe all over again! Already! It really doesn’t seem like 12 months ago that we stood in the Pleasance Courtyard, waiting in the queue for comedy show after comedy show, trying to keep out of the rain.
It also feels like this first weekend of the Fringe has been the wettest start for some time. We had hoped, just liked last year, to record the podcast sitting on a picnic table in the Pleasance, supping on some beer, and enjoying the sun. Instead, we were sheltering from the rain in the bar of the echoey Pleasance Dome. We also haven’t even been to see any shows yet! So this is very much a preview edition. Guess what, we talk nonsense, and play some music. Nothing really has changed in the last 12 months.
This week’s fringe Hipstamatic is Dan Willson from Withered Hand sporting this season’s ‘double denim‘ look at the afternoon’s in-store performance at Avalanche Records. As usual, it was a blinder.
