On November 5th, 2024 Republican Donald Trump won re-election, becoming the first U.S. President elected to two nonconsecutive terms since Grover Cleveland in 1893.
Trump, the first convicted felon elected to the Presidency, has promised drastic changes to U.S. domestic and foreign policy, including mass deportation of immigrants, using the U.S. Army to “hunt down” his political opponents, pulling the US out of the Paris climate change accords, withdrawing U.S. military support to Ukraine and telling Israel to “finish the job” against Hamas. He also pledges, with no details, to bring peace to the Middle East.
How is Trump’s reelection and his rhetoric resonating in the rest of the world?
Monday Eight o’Clock Buzz host Brian Standing spoke with three people bringing an international perspective on what a second Trump presidency might mean.
John Otis has reported on South America from his home in Bogota, Colombia, chiefly as a Latin American correspondent for NPR.  He has covered South American affairs for the Wall Street Journal, BBC, Time, GlobalPost and the Houston Chronicle and has reported extensively on political developments in Nicaragua. He is also the author of the book Law of the Jungle, The Hunt for Colombian Guerrillas, American Hostages, and Buried Treasure. He is also a consultant for the Committee to Protect Journalists.
 
Tracy Gudwin has lived in Berlin, Germany for nearly seventeen years and plans to get her German citizenship in 2025. She is the Director and Executive Producer of The Gudwin Agency. She has worked as a producer and cinematographer at ABC, Discovery Channel, and the Travel Channel; and is currently directing for the VOX show Kitchen Impossible.
 
Duha Jamal is a Palestinian national, who grew up in Baghdad, Iraq and lived in a refugee camp in Indonesia, and has worked in refugee resettlement for Jewish Social Services.  She now is a graduate student in the Department of Planning and Landscape Architecture at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

The North American free trade agreement of 1992 (NAFTA), still resonates with working class voters with the perception that liberal economic policies have resulted in the loss of well-paid industrial jobs in Wisconsin and in the country as a whole.  This is the opinion of Dan Kaufman, author of the book “The Fall of Wisconsin”, who joins the 8 O’Clock Buzz to talk about the importance of trying to reach this sector of the voting population for progressive candidates.  Dan feels that the democratic party is still feeling the repercussions from these earler economic policies and failing to provide a strong message regarding policies to help the working class.

Steve Shapiro, now living in California, is one of hundreds of volunteers who have journeyed to Wisconsin to canvas for the upcoming presidential election.  Steve joins the 8 O’Clock Buzz to talk about the election and his motivation for volunteering in this way.  He knows that the State of California is solidly blue but he feels the need to make a difference in those states that are up for grabs.  Steve shares his experiencing of canvassing in Madison and encourages others to get involved.

In case you were worried about the wealthy, the United States currently has 813 billionaires, which cumulatively hold $5.7 trillion, up $2.7 trillion since March 2020, a Forbes figure cited by Omar Ocampo from the Institute for Policy Studies in his article “Billionaire Wealth Is Soaring. We Need Progressive Taxation Now.” Ocampo and others propose a progressive world-wide wealth tax, supported by international treaties — to prevent sheltering assets in non-participating countries — starting with those holding above $5 million in assets, with proceeds going toward boosting a green economy, free healthcare, or other social goods.

Proving once again that art galleries are not just for static objects hanging quietly on the wall, Madison’s Chazen Museum of Art renews its Sunday Afternoon live series on November 3, with a marimba performance by multi-instrumental virtuoso Sean Kleve.
Kleve dropped by WORT studios to tell Monday Eight o’Clock Buzz host Brian Standing about how a marimba differs from a xylophone and how he plays Bach violin music on a marimba. He also described to listeners various “double mallet techniques.”

The 2024-25 Latinx Studies in the Midwest and Beyond Speaker Series titled “Latinx Art and Protest “ continues tonight with the second of three panels on the relationship between art, grassroots protest, and political mobilization featuring noted artists in dialogue with experts on Chicanx and Latinx visual culture.
Thursday 8 O’Clock Buzz host Tony Castañeda welcomes tonight’s panelists, scholar-educator-activists Jeanette Arellano and Jessica Lopez-Lyman who will engage in dialogue on struggle and what we can learn about the use of art in popular pushback movements. Joining the conversation is Liliana Barrera, a Kids Forward policy analyst committed to the well-being of migrant and refugee children.
The discussion, to be held in Room L140 of the Conrad Elvehjem Building, 800 University Ave., starts at 6:00pm.
