  • 2 - Sexual reproductive health and rights vis-a-vis Demographic dividend

The Sexual reproductive health and rights conversation is a very cardinal one in realizing development and especially that of third world societies.  The Universal Declaration of Human Rights establishes that “The enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health is one of the fundamental rights of every human being without distinction of race, religion, political belief, economic or social condition.”  In short, Health is a human right.  In recent years, Demographic dividend has emerged as a cardinal discussion point in relation to Adolescents Sexual Reproductive Health. However, demographic dividend perhaps may not have been accorded adequate coverage and in most cases not even misunderstood by both duty bearers and duty bearers and right holders. According to the United Nations Population Division data, the African population is projected to peak at 1.6 billion by 2030 from 1 billion in 2010. Close to 70 percent will be of working age and the population of youth will increase by 42 percent. These projections mainly depend upon assumptions about vital fertility and mortality. This is indeed progressive for Africa because of the expected positive impact on economic growth. In ensuring that Africa reaps the demographic dividend, sexual reproductive health and rights will play a vital role. On this episode, I feature Chrispin Chomba who is SAFAIDS head of country programs and strategic evidence as he unpacks the SRHR and demographic dividend link.
