- 87 - 60: Gender Transitioning – What Do the Studies Tell Us?
We have discussed some of the key philosophical ideas and cultural changes that led to the development of gender theory and subsequently “gender-affirming treatment”.
“Gender-affirming treatment” basically refers to therapy that affirms individuals in their gender dysphoria. This could consist of any single or combination of a number of social, psychological, behavioural, medical or even surgical interventions, in the hope that this would help the individuals feel better about themselves and relieve their psychological distress arising from gender dysphoria.
We concluded by noting that some of the most liberal countries which had initially embraced this idea and promoted “gender-affirming treatment” and transition for the young, such as those in Scandinavia and other parts of Europe, have now gone back on their policies and put a hold on this practice. Here, we discuss the medical evidence (or lack thereof) that contributed to this U-turn.

How did Gender Theory originate? What were the philosophical ideas that have caused the cultural confusion we are witnessing today in some societies? Who was Dr John Money, and how did he contribute to this idea that gender is a mere social construct rather than something that is innate to a person?

Thu, 03 Oct 2024 - 85 - 58: Gender Theory For Parents – An Introduction
In recent times, we have often been asked about “gender theory” by Catholic parents, and how we are to approach it.
As such, we have embarked on this series on “Gender Theory” in an endeavour to shed some light on this seemingly complicated topic through the lens of reason and faith. We hope and pray that this will provide parents with a better grasp of this topic as we continue to navigate the ever-changing challenges facing us in our vocation.
This episode is the first in the series, and provides an introduction to the topic by discussing the etymology of the word “gender” and what “Gender Theory” proposes.

Tue, 17 Sep 2024 - 84 - 57: Is Masculinity Toxic?
In recent times, there appear to have been more conversations and articles written about "toxic masculinity", whether in print or social media.
Based on this reading, which in turn is based on rather rigid stereotypical ideas about masculinity, it is used to dominate and use, even abuse, our female counterparts for the man’s gratification.
Yet, what is masculinity in the first place? Is authentic masculinity really toxic? Or is it a disordered version of it the cause of much of the woes that we see in our families and society today?
We examine these questions, and share with listeners what God had planned for masculinity from the beginning.

Tue, 20 Aug 2024 - 83 - 56: Rising Sexual Crimes Among Youth — What Parents Can Do
A recent report, that should concern any parent, noted that more youth aged 19 and below committed sexual crimes in 2023, 470 to be exact, about 30 per cent more than in 2022.
One of the main reasons cited was their exposure to pornography. According to experts, research has shown that teens who view pornography are likely to experience greater emotional and behavioural problems, earlier sexual experimentation, greater sexual permissiveness, greater objectification of women, and higher risk of sexual aggression.
It is indeed an urgent call for parents to see what we can do to protect our kids from becoming abusers or abused. Here are some points as to what we can do to help our children in this area.

Tue, 27 Feb 2024 - 80 - Interview: Marriage — Does It Make Us Better or Bitter?
One of the best ways we can be gift to our children is by living a sacramental marriage founded on the love of Christ and His Church. And many of us have entered marriage thinking that it would be a case of "living happily ever after".
However, experience tells us it is anything but. The fact is, ups and downs abound in any marriage. Yet through the challenges and vicissitudes of married life, we have the choice to become bitter or better for it. Which do we choose?
Through this interview, Alphonsus and Cyrine Gregory share with us the challenges of marriage, and how we can make the choice to make ourselves and each other better for it, through the grace of God.

Mon, 12 Feb 2024 - 79 - 54: Youth and Vaping – What Parents Can Do
A recent article in our local newspaper reported that about 800 students were referred to the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) for #vaping offences in 2022, a 16-fold increase from 2019. What is more, this seems to be an underestimate.
Another report suggested that up to 40 percent of residents in our universities' halls are using vaporisers, or vapes for short. Why are our young drawn to this practice which we know is hazardous to health? What can we parents do to help them avoid it?

Thu, 27 Jul 2023 - 74 - Episode 52: Same-Sex Attraction and the Catholic Church
When it comes to the topic of same-sex attraction, the Church has, unfortunately, often been seen as unforgiving, even harsh, in its teachings and attitude towards persons with this condition.
On the contrary, the Catechism tells us: "They must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided.” (CCC 2358)
Let us consider how we, as Catholic parents, can share with our children what the Church actually teaches on this topic, and very importantly too, how we are called to respond to these persons as brothers and sisters in Christ.

Thu, 29 Jun 2023 - 70 - 50: Why Should Marriage be Between a Man and a Woman?
One of the biggest questions from our children nowadays, and perhaps one of the most challenging, is this: "Why should marriage be only between man and woman?"

"Why should I be Catholic?"
This is not an uncommon question that Catholic parents might face as our children grow up and grapple with the concept of faith and God.

Unfortunately many people, including many of our children, believe this to be the case. We need to correct this misperception that is so prevalent today.

Social media is replete with numerous posts that are untrue, unkind and even unbecoming. It is so easy for us and our children to fall into this trap, if we do not think first and discern what and how we should post on social media platforms.
We discuss 3 broad principles that will help us guide our children in using such platforms safely, properly and responsibly.

Thu, 17 Nov 2022 - 52 - 41: Protecting Our Children from Pornography
Pornography is a multi-billion-dollar industry that has devastated individuals, marriages, and families.
According to the American College of Paediatricians, “consumption of pornography is associated with many negative emotional, psychological, and physical health outcomes. These include increased rates of depression, anxiety, acting out and violent behaviour, younger age of sexual debut, sexual promiscuity, increased risk of teen pregnancy, and a distorted view of relationships between men and women.”
In Singapore, a survey in 2016 indicated that 91 percent of teenage boys and 35 percent of teenage girls had watched or read sexually explicit materials within the previous year.
By now, the statistics are likely to be worse.
As parents, we cannot but be concerned about the negative impact of pornography on our children.
We discuss what we as Catholic parents can do to protect our children from the scourge of pornography.

While the internet has brought much benefit, there are also many dangers that lurk in there, ready to pounce on our unsuspecting children if we do not put measures in place to protect them online.
While no method is perfect, there are many measures we can take as parents to protect our children in the digital era.
We discuss the various levels of protection and security we can put in place to do just that, and keep our children as safe as we possibly can in the rapidly evolving world that is the internet.

Thu, 15 Sep 2022 - 43 - Interview: Sexual Abuse – How Can We Protect Our Children?
As human persons, we are made in the image and likeness of God. The only appropriate response to each and every one of us is love. To be loved as God loves, and never to be used or abused.
This is why sexual abuse of minors is one issue that all of us parents should be concerned with.
Are there warning signs that we can look out for in our children that might indicate they have been sexually abused? As parents, how can we protect our children from this scourge? What can we do to minimise their vulnerability? Are there any avenues we can turn to, should anything untoward happen to our children in this area?
In this interview with Dr Christopher Cheok, Senior Consultant at the Institute of Mental Health, we address these questions and more.
Thu, 08 Sep 2022 - 42 - Interview: Theology of the Body for Catholic Parents
Many of us have heard of the Theology of the Body, a beautiful series of catechesis on human love in the divine plan given to us by Pope St John Paul II.
Yet, does it deal only with sexual love, or more than that? What does it really encompass? And why is it so beneficial to know this teaching as parents who want to let our children know who they are, whose they are, where their destiny lies, and what they would want to do to get there?
This interview with Mr Andrew Kong covers these and more.

Thu, 18 Aug 2022 - 39 - Interview: Religion's Role to Counter Negative Societal Influences and Promote Human Flourishing
We and our children are bombarded by all sorts of influences, by the very fact of our participation in society. Some of these may be good, and some not so good, possibly even deleterious to our flourishing as human persons made in the image and likeness of God.
How can we respond to these influences, especially the negative ones? How does our faith help us on this journey to true fulfilment according to God’s plan for us?

Thu, 11 Aug 2022 - 38 - 33: Should I Let My Child Attend Sex Ed Classes in School?
Sex education is ubiquitous in many school systems today. One of the common questions that many parents wrestle with is this: should we let our children attend these in school? Or should we just rely on the catechism classes in church to do the job? Or should we simply be the ones to teach it at home?
We discuss the various considerations Catholic parents can pray and discern over, in order to optimise the formation of our children in this area of sexuality education.
Thu, 04 Aug 2022 - 37 - 32: Talking to Our Children About ModestyThu, 28 Jul 2022
- 36 - 31: Talking to Our Children About Cohabitation and Pre-Marital Sex
Surveys suggest that more people seem to be having premarital sex and living together before marriage.
Yet studies also suggest a positive correlation between these and subsequent divorce later.
As Catholic parents, we know that sexual intercourse is reserved for the married. After all, sexual intercourse is essentially a bodily proclamation of our wedding vows, a time when our wedding vows that we professed at the altar become flesh in and through our bodies. Anything other than marital intercourse speaks the language of the body falsely and in an incoherent manner.
Yet how can we form our children in this area? How can we equip them? Especially when many sectors of society and social media are telling them very different things and attempting to shape their values in a different way?
This episode discusses how we can approach this topic with our children, and prepare them to face the pressures, both subtle and not so subtle, that they will surely encounter in this world.

Thu, 21 Jul 2022 - 35 - 30: Talking to Our Children About Contraception
How can we talk to our children about the morality of using condoms and other forms of contraception? This is not an easy topic, and many of us understandably struggle with it ourselves.
Once we are able to appreciate the Language of the Body, which speaks about our vocation to love as God loves in and through our bodies, our eyes will be opened to the wonder of this language that God has given to each and every one of us.
When that happens, the Church’s teachings in this area will no longer be seen as a repression of our sexual desire, but rather a redemption of it, in which we will be liberated to love in such a way as to give us a beautiful foretaste of the heavenly delights that await us.

Thu, 14 Jul 2022 - 34 - 29: Talking to Our Children About Condoms and “Safe Sex”
How effective, really, is the condom in preventing sexually transmitted infections (or STIs)?
With all the information, and perhaps misinformation, that our teens are bombarded with from all avenues, it will be useful for us parents to be ready with the right questions, and the right answers.
In this episode, we discuss the medical data regarding the actual effectiveness of the condom in preventing pregnancy and STIs. We also discuss why it is so important for us to not just look at the biology behind this issue, but to understand it holistically, and consider the complex social, psychological and emotional aspects.
As a contributor to the British Medical Journal, Dr Stephen Genuis, once remarked, merely promoting condoms “disregards the complex nature of human sexuality and fails to tackle the underlying social and emotional needs of young people, who are often trapped in high-risk sexual behaviour as a consequence of difficult life circumstances.”

Thu, 30 Jun 2022 - 32 - 27: Talking to Our Children About Masturbation
Many of us instinctively know that masturbation is not right. At the same time, we find much difficulty explaining to our children why this is so.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church tells us in no uncertain termsthat masturbation is an intrinsically and gravely disordered action, while acknowledging that certain conditions may “lessen, if not even reduce to a minimum, moral culpability.” (CCC, 2352).
How do we approach this topic with our children? What should we say to them?
This episode explores these questions and gives some tips as to how Catholic parents can talk with our children about this.

Thu, 23 Jun 2022 - 31 - 26: Talking to Our Children About Sexuality – 13 Years and Older
At this stage, as our kids become teens, lots of changes, both physical and emotional, will be taking place in their lives. They are developing a mind of their own, and talking about sexuality, and indeed any topic at all, will be quite different from the stages we have discussed before. It becomes less of a “talking down to”, but rather a “dialogue with”.
How can we go about this? How can we help them avoid the pitfalls of following the world’s plan, so to speak, so that they can continue to follow God’s plan instead and grow in His love, and ultimately experience the joy and fruits that this brings?

And at this stage, a significant proportion of them will have been exposed to pornography, intentionally or otherwise. What can we as Catholic parents do to help them navigate the pre-pubertal years? How can we prepare them for the changes to be expected in puberty? What about pornography? Even sexual grooming and abuse. In the previous two interviews with Mr Bryan Shen, we had discussed how important affirmation is for the flourishing of our children. We also examined how the “emotional baggage” that we parents carry with us from our own upbringing may negatively impact the psycho-social development of our children. In this episode, Mr Bryan Shen shares with us the pressures and influences our children may experience from another aspect of their lives – society, such as school, friends and media. In addition, children in this age group may also be at risk of exposure to pornography and sexual grooming, even molestation and sexual abuse. Thu, 19 May 2022 - 25 - 21: Chastity – Same as Celibacy?
The word “Chastity” has been very much misunderstood in our culture today. It is often seen as a repression of our innermost desires, with a list of prohibitions preventing us from satisfying the deepest yearning of our hearts for love and union. It has even been equated to celibacy, and therefore reserved only for priests, religious and singles. Yet, properly understood, it is anything but that. Chastity is not merely about saying “no” to sex. Chastity is about saying “yes” to God’s plan for our sexuality. This episode explores what this entails, and how it actually frees us for authentic love in all its splendour and beauty. Learn more about Catholic Parents Online at catholicparents.online.
Thu, 12 May 2022 - 24 - 20: Understanding Sexual Desire
We know how powerful sexual desire can be. Some have even compared it to a raging river, which if not controlled or managed, can cause immense destruction. Yet, what is sexual desire? Is it good, or bad? Why were we created with it in the first place? Thu, 28 Apr 2022 - 22 - Interview: Impact of Parents and Expectations on Our Children's Development
Parents naturally want the best for our children. Yet time and again we may find ourselves saying or doing something that might hurt our children. On the other hand, we might even be unaware of the hurt we might have caused our children through things that we did or things that we failed to do. Much of this is likely due to the emotional "baggages" we may carry from our childhood from the hurts we sustained from our own parents. How can we identify these? What can we do to overcome these so that we can avoid passing these to our children? Thu, 24 Mar 2022 - 18 - Interview: Addressing Anxiety and Self-harm in Our Children
In a report released by the Ministry of Health in 2021, mental well-being was a challenge for 52% of the youth who were polled. The top stressors cited by the youth were anxiety over the future (53%), stress over finances (41%), and worries about academic or work performance (39%). As for self-harm, a study among Singaporean adolescents in an outpatient setting reported that the prevalence of self-harm has been consistent at 23.1 percent from 2013 to 2018, which seems to be a rather worryingly high figure. In this interview with Dr Penny Tok, we discuss the causes of anxiety and self-harm in our youth, and how we as parents can help prevent these in our children, or at least intervene early by detecting warning signs. Dr Penny Tok is a Child Psychologist in private practice who specialises in developmental, educational, and counselling psychology. Thu, 17 Mar 2022 - 17 - 17: Bonding Joyfully with Our Children
Pope Francis once said that as evangelisers, we should “not look like someone who has just come back from a funeral!” As the primary evangelisers of our children, do we make the home a place of joy and peace? Or do we subconsciously give in to the stresses that inevitably come our way and contribute to the home being a place of tension and disharmony? What is joy in the first place? Is it merely a positive feeling that we experience when “good” things happen, and which dissipate as quickly as it comes? Or is it something more permanent? As parents, we know how sharp our children are in detecting whether we are walking the talk at home. That is why integrity is so important if we are to earn their trust and respect, and through this, bond with them ever more deeply. Not only is integrity necessary for our connection with our children, it is also indispensable for our children’s future and flourishing. Often times, as parents, we might be tempted to tell some "white" lie, either to avoid admitting to a mistake we have made, or to induce a desired behavioural change in our children. Yet the lack of honesty can significantly compromise our relationship with them and become an impediment to their development and character formation. How can we avoid this pitfall? Thu, 24 Feb 2022 - 14 - 14: God-Centred
Experience and evidence tell us that our deepest yearning for happiness cannot be easily satisfied in any way. Not by honour, nor wealth, nor power, nor pleasure. Only God can fill that void in our hearts that He made. Which is why St Augustine famously said once that “You have made us for Yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You.” This also explains why it is so important for God to be at the centre of our family life, and the centre of our children’s lives. Yet many of us may have difficulty believing in a loving God who wants only the best for us, and therefore have difficulty entrusting ourselves and our families to Him. Thu, 17 Feb 2022 - 13 - 13: Forgiveness
Many of us have suffered from, and possibly even contributed to, the wounds that have hurt ourselves and our children. Often we have found much difficulty in finding reconciliation, healing and peace within ourselves and our families. Yet we know for a fact that forgiveness is absolutely necessary if these wounds are to be healed, and for us to reconnect again with our spouse and children. But is this really possible? How can we go about doing this? Or should we just let time heal all wounds? Join us in this episode as we share about the importance of forgiveness in bonding with our children and of course our spouse. Learn more about Catholic Parents Online at catholicparents.online.
Thu, 10 Feb 2022 - 12 - 12: Empathy
To empathise with our children is to emotionally understand what they are feeling, to see things from their point of view, and imagine myself in their place. Essentially, it is putting myself in children's position and feeling what they must be feeling. Empathy is important because once our children can perceive that we have taken the effort to listen to them, to understand how they feel, and feel what they feel, they will feel more connected with us, they will be more willing to share their lives with us, and they will be more willing to listen to what we have to share with them. Thu, 03 Feb 2022 - 11 - 11: Discipline
Mention the word “Discipline” and many of us will think of being scolded or punished. Yet is that discipline really is? Thu, 13 Jan 2022 - 8 - 8: Affirmation
In this first episode of this mini-series that discusses the ABCs of connecting with our children, we explore the topic of affirmation. Just as physical food is essential for our physical growth, affirmation of our children is indispensable for their psychological, emotional, and spiritual well being. If our children do not have this most fundamental need fulfilled, they will start looking for it later on in life in other ways, often in all the wrong places, and in all the wrong faces. This episode seeks to share with parents why right affirmation of our children is so important, and how we can use it in a way that will help us connect better with them. Subsequent episodes in this second mini-series will cover the other alphabets in the acronym mentioned in episode 7: • Being there for our children • Communication • Discipline • Empathy • Forgiveness • God-centredness • Honesty • Integrity, and • Joy Learn more about Catholic Parents Online at catholicparents.online.
