I am Marc Gunn. I’m Celtic musician with Christmas music and a podcaster. We are promoting Celtic culture through Christmas cheer.

Today’s show is a re - release of episode #537 of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast (Happy Celtic Christmas 2021). That is one of the other podcasts I host. It features Irish and Celtic music from around the world. It’s a fantastic show. Definitely go check out that episode and subscribe to that podcast if you love Celtic music.

Every year, I produce a Celtic Christmas episode over there. I usually release those episodes on this feed, but I didn’t do that over the last few years. This year, I was struck with the idea that I could slowly release episodes to build over to the regular season of the show. That’s what we’re doing.

I have a new season in the planning stages. But that means I need to find Patrons to financially make new episodes of this podcast happen!

Triskele, [pronounced Tris-Kay-lee] is the premier all~female Celtic band out of Albany NY. They are known for their stunning harmonies, singing in the Gaelic language and for their Irish wit. Noeleen, who grew up in Dublin and is the youngest of 16, taught Sharon and Jenn the Gaelic language through song. These ladies perform, primarily, traditional Celtic/Irish music, but also have written originals. Triskele not only revitalizes the Gaelic language, but weaves history and traditions about growing up in Ireland. This gives the listener a deeper appreciation and understanding of Irish/Celtic history.

Triskele stands out in a Celtic music world dominated by men. They have gained fans and supporters with their ability to keep traditional songs traditional. Fans have stated that they enjoy hearing songs sung with the unique qualities of the female voice; given the timbre and rich, clear harmonies.

“Angels We Have Heard on High (feat. Al Church)” by Gaelynn Lea from Deepest Darkness, Brightest Dawn

That was from today’s special holiday guest. She is on the latest Celtic Christmas Playlist.

Traditional fiddle music tugs at the heartstrings, and it infuses feeling into what is otherwise notes on a page. There’s something transformative about it. Not only has Gaeylnn Lea mastered her craft, but her experimental use of this time-honored instrument adds yet another dimension to the sound. Melodies are stretched and harmonies are crafted by her use of live looping, paired with obvious classical training. It’s updated, and ultimately, very satisfying. Cellist Zoe Keating springs to mind as one listens to Lea’s use of her chosen instrument. It’s no wonder she has drawn attention for her music—she has really been carving out her own niche in the industry.

Gaelynn has been playing the violin for over two decades, and there’s little doubt she’s comfortable with bow in hand. It really does take a person mastering an instrument before experimentation can be successful. The challenge is to depart from the norm and create something unique—all while expanding on previous training. The skill is still in there--but the music grows larger and more full. This is what Gaelynn does, and it’s a pleasure to hear the thread of the familiar woven in with the freshness of something new at the hands of an experienced artist.

The musician has been recognized for her work—being chosen as the winner of NPR Music’s 2016 Tiny Desk Contest, recognized as a benchmark in the world of music. This competition brings in thousands of submissions, and to win is quite the accomplishment!

Those who are looking for a forward-looking holiday collection of music will want to investigate Lea’s album, "Deepest Darkness, Brightest Dawn". The tracks that are included here boast many of the well-known popular carol names, such as Angels We Have Heard on High, Silent Night, Away in a Manger, and O Come, O Come Emmanuel--but you haven’t ever heard them played like this before.

“God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen / Pathways / The Kesh” by Abbots Cross from Christmas Visions

That was from today’s special holiday guest–Abbots Cross. They are on the latest Celtic Christmas Playlist-Christmas Driving Music.

Pair up two experienced musicians who enjoy Celtic music and what do you get? Well, in this case, you get Abbots Cross! One half of this duo is Alan Booth, who plays guitar, fiddle, and provides the vocals for the group. Alan comes from a musical family and has been steeped in it all his life, starting with piano at the tender age of five, and having two music teachers for parents. He even does musical volunteer work in the Pittsburgh area where he’s from—and has traveled all the way to Kenya to share his deep love of singing and playing instruments. 

The second half of this duo is Mike Clancy, who provides the percussion, as well as the Irish flute and whistles to the mix. Also a seasoned musician, he has performed for several of the Broadway shows that have traveled to Pittsburgh. Mike plays with several bands in addition to Abbots Cross, and has even created original jazz compositions and released them to CD himself. 

It’s easy to see how the blending of these two men would provide the foundation for a solid band, and they do come together well to highlight their considerable talents! The holiday album, “Christmas Visions” is a 10-track offering that has such interesting arrangements—and they are deftly played. Clancy’s flute takes center stage in many of these tracks, and it just adds so much to the music. In particular, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen is just fantastic. These guys know how to stay true to the spirit of a holiday song while experimenting with what you can do with the music. Everything on this album has a very natural, free-flowing feel to it. It’s as if the arrangements are loose and the two musicians just get in the groove and have a good time pushing their abilities. A veritable Christmas “jam session”!

Don’t miss Si Bheag, Si Mhor / The First Noel. It’s hauntingly beautiful, beginning with the flute and then picking up the guitar gently in the background. This track builds slowly and easily with a warmth and genuineness that is very pleasing. Deck the Halls is happy and cheery as it should be, but also paired with a Christmas Eve Reel, adding that Celtic flavor and appeal. 

This holiday compilation by Abbots Cross is a real treat, and a standout among the many Christmas albums. Don’t miss the chance to add something different to your collection of Celtic music that will help you get into the mood for celebrating!

One of the lovely things about Celtic music is the fact that just a couple of people can make a whole lot of music, and this is certainly true when it comes to Matt & Shannon Heaton. This music duo offers flute/guitar/bouzouki and sweet, sweet harmony vocals in arrangements that are quite lovely. 

Deeply involved in the Boston traditional music scene, the pair plays together seamlessly, and the enthusiasm that they have for the music really comes through. There’s a genuineness that is unmistakeable grounding their play. A husband and wife team can certainly telegraph their collective love for the music--and the sheer fun they have playing together. This one does it better than most. 

The two are definitely experienced, and surround themselves with music in many different ways. Shannon has her own podcast, Irish Music Stories, and she’s also the co-founder of Boston’s Celtic music fest, which undoubtedly expanded her vision and abilities in the field. 

Matt is front man for another band, the "surf-rock" Electric Heaters, and performs with a wide range of bands and musicians when he’s not playing with Shannon. Each an accomplished musician in their own right, the blend of the two is a true celebration of musical talent—dosed with a wholesome affection for the Celtic sound. It’s a pleasure to hear them play.

The couple’s Christmas song collection is filled with a little bit of everything. You’ll find fresh holiday fare as well as traditional favorites like “O Little Town of Bethlehem” and “It Came Upon the Midnight Clear” to sing along to. Irish music lovers will appreciate the jigs and reels that are included in the mixture, and there’s certainly enough here to fill a holiday party to the brim with some good cheer. 

Don’t miss “Julius the Christmas Cat”—it couldn’t be any sweeter, and is sure to be a favorite for those who love their feline friends. Nothing like a cute little "story song" to get in the holiday spirit! Other notable tracks in this collection include “Christmas in Mt. Horeb” and “Wexford Carol,” but there really isn’t a bad track on the compilation. 

There’s 13 tracks offered here, and listeners who love the flute will really be pleased, as it appears often on these tracks. Soft harmonies and easy strumming on the guitar are other hallmarks of what this holiday album is all about. There’s little doubt this will have a place in any rotation of Christmas music where an updated Celtic sound is welcomed.

The band’s music tells great stories using the traditional on top of sassy pop, alt-country and funk playing. They are a band’s band around the NYC Irish scene and will remind you of Fleetwood Mac or the B-52s with a heavy dose of Saw Doctors or Stockton’s Wing.

"Coventry Carol" by Wicked Tinkers from Slainte Happy Holidays

Pioneers of the growing Tribal Celtic movement, the Wicked Tinkers have been playing haunting, heart-pounding bagpipes and irresistible tribal drums as a professional touring band since 1995. With the addition, of the mesmerizing drone of the Australian didgeridoo and Bronze Age Irish horn, the magic was complete. Sit back and be transported to an earlier time in Scotland and Ireland, when battle cries filled the air and strange, unheard-of creatures roamed the night. Or better yet, get on your feet and let your body move to ancient rhythms and forgotten sounds.

"Kirkin' the Midwinter" by Haggis Rampant from The Silver Glens

The first stirrings of Haggis Rampant appeared in the fall of 2000 at the first annual Louisiana Renaissance Festival. Steve was feeding his renfest habit while looking for places to practice on his loud instrument. His wife Pam played her bodhran with Steve on the last day of the 2000 run, and, much to his chagrin, the show was a hit. The group was completed with the addition of their daughter Gillian a few years later. Gillian has shown a talent for writing exquisite harmonies on the bagpipes and the good-natured father/daughter competitiveness makes them a fun team to watch.

"Christmas Carousing/Ale Is Dear/New Christmas" by Bonnie Rideout from A Scottish Christmas

Bonnie Rideout is an award winning Scottish fiddler. Her CD, "A Scottish Christmas" became a New York Times “Top Ten Holiday Best Seller”. She celebrates Christmas with this enthusiastic holiday performance that she takes on the road each year, playing at performing arts centers and large theaters nationwide in November and December. Rideout performs along with the Scottish Christmas Ensemble - a group of internationally renowned musicians including the City of Washington Pipe Band and dancers from the Scottish Highlands! Rideout and crew perform with spirit and gusto. This performance features Eric Rigler on Scottish smallpipes.

"I Saw Three Ships" by Angus Mohr & Friends from A Christmas Pageant

Just as watery mist remakes the world, and whisky remakes the man, Angus Mohr revitalizes the brogue of traditional Celtic music with an American blues accent and rejuvenates rock ’n roll’s broad spectrum with bagpipe and pennywhistles. No one is ever going to mistake Angus Mohr for a cover band. Sure, they play songs like “Foggy Dew,” the 1916 Easter Rising ballad, and “Whisky in the Jar,” a sixteenth century tale of love and betrayal, and their set list is peppered with songs penned by Dylan, Pink Floyd, Johnny Cash, and the Ramones. But you’ve never heard “Ring of Fire” or “I Wanna Be Sedated” until you’ve heard it with the pipes’ spiraling keen.

The 2008 album from Angus Mohr is a departure from their usual sound! This Christmas album features an eclectic mix of styles, including everything from medieval carols to Chuck Berry!

"Carols on 45" by Rathkeltair from Something Good for Christmas

Rathkeltair blends compelling and catchy original songs with tight, driving straight-ahead rock-n-roll, while never forgetting its Celtic roots. Based in Jacksonville Beach, Florida, Rathkeltair has been on the road full-time since 2003. Highly regarded for its extraordinary energy, showmanship and professionalism, Rathkeltair enjoys a loyal and rapidly expanding community of friends and fans.

In 2011, they released their album "Something Good for Christmas". It features over 45 minutes of Christmas classics , Original songs and tunes done Rathkeltair style for the holiday season!

Bonnie Rideout is an award winning Scottish fiddler. On stages from Scotland’s Edinburgh International Festival to America’s Kennedy Center, Bonnie Rideout’s unique style of Scottish fiddling has charmed audiences across the globe. Bonnie has been featured on the BBC, CBS, NPR’s Performance Today, and Morning Edition. Her A Scottish Christmas CD became a New York Times “Top Ten Holiday Best Seller”. Its success prompted a touring show that has sold out halls across North America for over a decade. In 2007, the Mel Bay Publishing Company credited Bonnie as one of America’s top ten most influential traditional fiddlers of the 20th century.

"Have You Heard" by The Irish Rovers from Merry Merry Time Of Year

The Irish Rovers is a Canadian Irish folk group created in 1963 and named after the traditional song "The Irish Rover." The group is best known for their international television series, contributing to the popularization of Irish Music in North America. All band members hail from Ireland, however the group was formed in Toronto, Canada. Since then there have been over 40 albums in North America with more internationally. “Have You Heard” is a beautiful Christmas tune with an old world sound, but like with all the Irish Rovers songs, you’ll want to sing along. It’s written by George Millar who has written most of the Rovers’ original music over the years.

Katie McMahon is an Irish singer from Dublin. She was a soloist with the original Riverdance troupe. Her recordings have largely featured traditional Irish songs, occasionally in the Irish language. She has released five critically acclaimed solo CDs: After the Morning, Shine, Celtic Christmas, St. Patrick's Day and Christmas Angels.
