Fri, 19 Jul 2024 - 39min - 182 - Episode 178 | Elevation Worship
On todays show, we chat with Jonsal with Elevation Worship!
GRAMMY Award-winning group Elevation Worship releases their new live album, When Wind Meets Fire, with 14 new songs. The album features Elevation Worship’s Chris Brown, Tiffany Hudson, Jonsal Barrientes, Jenna Barrientes, ELEVATION RHYTHM's Bella Cordero, and Pastor Steven Furtick along with collaborators Chandler Moore, Leeland, and Joe L Barnes. Marking the group’s 17th album, When Wind Meets Fire continues the collective’s tradition of writing songs for the church.
The foundational title cut attempts to encapsulate the sensory experience depicted in the book of Acts when Paul describes the hurricane-force power of the Holy Spirit. Elevation Worship’s Chris Brown echoed the song’s lyric, “God is Wind and Fire, the Author of life and an all-consuming fire. Whatever He speaks is done, whatever He touches lives.”
From bold declarations to comforting ballads, Elevation Worship’s latest endeavor sits at the crossroads where God’s life-giving wind meets His life-changing fire. This is a fresh batch of songs that offers a taste of the transformation that’s happening every week at Elevation Church, tried and true selections they’ve been singing for the better part of 14 months, and anthems that are making their mark in real-time.
Elevation Worship kicks off its nearly sold-out Praise Party Summer Tour this month offering eight outdoor major-market shows and three indoor venues. The summer tour is titled after the group’s hit song “Praise,” which continues to be No. 1 after 11 weeks on radio and the Billboard Hot Christian Songs chart for the last 18 weeks. This fall, the group will continue the Elevation Nights tour with Pastor Steven Furtick and ELEVATION RHYTHM on the West Coast in September and October.

Wed, 19 Jun 2024 - 41min - 177 - Episode 173 | Jordan St. Cyr talks about our Foundation
On today's show, we chat with two - time guest, Jordan St. Cyr! It was when Jordan St. Cyr was a teen and served with Youth With a Mission (YWAM) that he found the inspiration to pursue music as a career. He eventually released an EP, and in the years that have followed, he has released more music and has received numerous life-changing opportunities to work alongside many talented songwriters, producers, and artists, all of whom have encouraged him along his journey. From playing numerous events of all sizes and meeting people from many different walks of life, humanity’s deep desire for meaningful connection has been revealed to him and the hope to find something more vibrant than our current reality.
St. Cyr dropped his first full-length self-titled album in the spring of 2022 with Seattle-based label, BEC Recordings. The project features the chart-climbing radio hits "Fires" and "Weary Traveler" - both of which offer a pursuit of hope, even in our darkest moments, to know that God gives us stories to share and encourage one another through our fires and weary travels, to give us strength in the midst of them. And it was “Fires” that quickly put St. Cyr on the map, hitting the airwaves on major networks and stations for nearly 18 months straight and reaching millions weekly and going top 5. “Weary Traveler” followed, which also became his first No. 1 hit single, taking the top spot on all radio charts.
2022 continued to be an astounding year for St. Cyr. He became a two-time GMA Dove Awards nominee, being recognized for Best New Artist and for Short-Form Video Of The Year ("Weary Traveler”), followed by sweeping the GMA Canada Covenant Awards with six wins, the most out of any other nominees and adding to his already five Covenant Award wins. He was recognized as Artist of the Year, Album and Male Vocalist of the Year along with Best Pop Song, Live Music Artist, and AC Artist of the Year.
While he continues to create music and tour, Jordan St. Cyr is really just getting started.
We have to build our life on something, if we don’t we will fall. Jordan St. Cyr’s sophomore album, My Foundation, resonates with those building their foundation on solid rock. He speaks through personal experiences that touch the hearts of all who have weathered storms.
“The idea of my foundation has never been physical,” Jordan explains. “It’s always been this understanding of God as my heavenly Father; being the foundation on which I build my life on and the home I get to participate in building with Him for my wife and kids.”
With all that Jordan has experienced the last few years, he praises the Lord for the outcome, “I now rejoice for all the gifts He gave us through the process.” 'My Foundation' is out today!

Fri, 14 Jun 2024 - 32min - 176 - Episode 172 | Bay Turner
On today’s show, we chat with Bay Turner! Bay Turner’s love for music was first ignited by a gas station mixtape he’d listen to from the passenger seat to and from his dad’s house. Turner’s parents divorced when he was an infant, and when his father moved out to the Texas Hill Country, his weekends were always bookended by a car ride with his dad.“That hour-and-a-half ride there and that hour-and-a-half ride back were, I think, foundational for who I am,” Turner reflects. “We were both new to Jesus, and we talked about everything you could ever talk about as we were both growing in our faith. And I also think part of my journey as a musician started in that car ride.”.Although he was vigorously immersed in classical training and evolving into a rising star, Turner’s spirit remained unsettled. As his faith became more of a central force in his life, his values began to clash with the trajectory of a typical opera performer. While walking the streets of Brooklyn in 2018, he was grappling with his next professional steps when he heard voices harmonizing around what sounded like a familiar melody. He followed the sound and found himself in a church, only to realize the Gospel standard was being sung by none other than the iconic Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir. In a matter of months, Turner was leading worship alongside the historic ensemble. Giving up the opportunity to pursue an operatic career, the Texas native decided he was going to leverage his talent for his first love and direct his efforts wholeheartedly toward Christian music.Just when he thought he was stepping into a divinely orchestrated era of his career, he found two tumors in his chest. While benign, doctors advised surgery to remove both masses in 2020. In the days following the procedure, Turner quickly realized something was off with his voice. A visit to the ENT revealed one of his vocal cords had been nicked during the surgery and paralyzed by the intubation tube. He was told he would likely never sing again.Under doctors’ orders, he spent the next several months in complete silence. “I had to really wrestle with God,” Turner says. “I had to sit and be quiet and trust God that my voice was not going to be taken away from me for the rest of my life.”Much of that wrestling took place in a tiny space he carved out in his small New York apartment. It was there that God eventually put on his heart to see a different ENT. Miraculously, new tests revealed his vocal cords to be seamlessly healed and healthy — so healthy that there wasn’t even any visible scar tissue, which was a rare occurrence that left even the seasoned ENT confounded.“I think my faith grew in pain,” Turner observes. “God had to teach me how to separate who I am as a man from my gift of singing. I think I would have crashed and burned as a recording artist if I was fully relying on my gifting and not on God. Today, I’m so grateful for the pain that brought me fully back to Jesus, though it’s crazy to be thankful for the stuff that felt like the end of the world. ”A week after the second ENT appointment, a producer for “America’s Got Talent” called and encouraged Turner to audition. This led to his first performance post-surgery on Season 17 of the televised talent competition. This wasn’t Turner’s first time to compete in a nationwide talent search, however, because prior to his health complication, Turner previously showcased his penchant for Gospel music on Season 10 of BET’s “Sunday Best.” His latest song, 'Brand New', is available now!

Wed, 12 Jun 2024 - 48min - 175 - Episode 171 | Selah Part 3
On today's episode, we chat with 3-time guest, Selah! What could a well-established, veteran group that has sold over 4 million records (including 2 Gold Albums), won 11 Gospel Music Association Dove Awards, and has over 900 million streams across all digital music platforms do for their next project to keep things interesting for themselves and their listeners? This was the question that Todd Smith, Amy Perry, and Allan Hall pondered as they began work on their 22nd album.
Allan eventually hit upon an interesting idea that the group realized they had never done in their 27-year career: for this album, EVERY song would be written, co-written, or spoken into by at least one group member! The three had certainly written songs for Selah albums before, but those original compositions were always accompanied on their album projects by covers of classic Gospel and CCM songs, original songs by other songwriters, and Selah’s own arrangements of powerful hymns of the Christian faith.
The fresh concept resonated strongly with Todd and Amy and the timing was good, especially since the two previous albums had covered Selah’s more “traditional” side. The group decided to head in a more contemporary direction for the new album, and the idea for every song to be an original sparked strong creativity and energy.
The timing of an “all-original songs” album ended up working out well, as each member of the group had been walking through various situations in their own lives.
The poignant, bittersweet song “The Rock Is My Foundation” addresses how, when life doesn’t go as expected and events turn out differently than we planned, we have a promise from our Lord that He is our refuge in difficult times, seeing the full picture and knowing what’s best for us even when we can’t see it ourselves. This song was born out of Allan’s profound sense of loss and the struggle to find hope amidst grief as he dealt with major personal tragedies over the past four years with the deaths of numerous friends and family, sadly culminating with the passing of his mother in October 2023.
Amy and her husband, Jake, were on an incredibly challenging foster care journey — the young child that was placed into their home had severe multiple trauma issues, and after several years of loving on the child and doing their best to bring love, peace, and healing to him, God revealed to Amy and Jake that they would not be his “forever family.” This was devastating to them, and they continue to navigate this heartbreaking situation as they trust God’s wisdom and leading. Out of this wrenchingly emotional experience flowed the songs “He Is Still” and “You Don’t Leave Me,” anchored by Amy’s powerful and deeply felt vocal performances.
Todd, as he kept deepening his study of the Bible, was becoming more and more aware of spiritual warfare and how the topic oftentimes seemed to be “glossed over” or outright ignored in the modern church. Todd wanted to write songs that let Christians know that they are ALREADY conquerors because of the power of Jesus Christ, and that Christians need to root themselves boldly in that fact and act from a place of power and authority in their lives. The songs “Victory” and “Higher Name” in particular speak to this. As always, music would be the avenue for Selah to bare their hearts and souls and invite listeners to join them on the journey of LIFE — with all of its ups and downs and joys and sorrows.
The November 1, 2024 release of the new album, Higher Name, represents more than just a collection of songs; it’s a reflection of Selah’s journey, both individually and as a group. What sets this album apart is the depth of emotion and vulnerability that permeates every note. Each track is a testament to life — faith, hope, struggle, heartbreak, disappointment, victory, triumph, joy — all woven together with the threads of Selah’s signature melody and harmony.

Wed, 28 Feb 2024 - 40min - 149 - Episode 145 | Steven Malcolm
On today's Friday edition, of the Christian Music Guys, we chat with Steven Malcolm! Steven Malcolm makes faith-driven hip-hop that's as unique as his multi-cultural background. It's a sound rooted in rap's rhythmic delivery, pop's modern melodies, and God's word, glued together by an artist whose music has earned five Dove Award nominations and more than 70 million streams.
Malcolm is a dynamic storyteller that incorporates a broad range of creative influences into his music. He doubles down on his talents with his most reflective album to date, Tree. All 16-tracks explore Malcolm’s spiritual depth and versatility as a hip-hop artist. Each song reverberates like Sunday-morning spirituals filled with Saturday-evening energy. His powerful messages are reinforced with potent production by Grammy-winning heavyweights BoogzDaBeast (Kanye West), Social House (MGK), and FNZ (A$AP Rocky).
Malcolm's messages of hope and redemption come from his own experience. Raised in western Michigan and coastal Florida, he grew up in search of stability. His father, a native Jamaican who had emigrated from Montego Bay, was deported back to the Caribbean when Steven was just 9 years old, and later passed away before the two could reunite. Steven's mother struggled as a single parent and eventually left town, leaving her son to fend for himself as a young college student. His life lacked a clear direction until he accepted a friend's invitation to attend a local church service that incorporated hip-hop, dance, and worship. An acronym for “Based On A True Story,” BOATS is poised to transport listeners to a utopia of Malcolm’s own creation. “BOATS will take listeners on a journey to Away — an oasis built for the chosen and run by the redeemed,” he shares of the concept behind the record. “Imagine a place where you become what it is you long to become. Imagine a place where your gift makes a way. Imagine a place where its beauty reflects the ones who protect it and its foundation is held together by the stories of the broken. Welcome to Away.” B.O.A.T.S. is out today!

Wed, 14 Feb 2024 - 41min - 146 - Episode 142 | Ernie Haase
On today's episode, we chat with Ernie Haase! Ernie and Lisa make their home in Stow, Ohio, the foundation for StowTown Records. Ernie started his legendary quartet (EHSS) in 2003. Then, in 2011, he helped begin this specialty Southern Gospel record label along with good friend and fellow co-founder Wayne Haun.
The Newburgh, IN, native grew up enjoying the sounds of Gospel music and, more specifically, quartet music. His favorite quartet was the legendary Cathedrals.
"I remember going to hear them sing anytime they were near my hometown. When I was a teenager, I would always show up early, sometimes even before they did, and help them unload their bus. It was my dream to sing with them one day."
That dream became a reality in 1990, when Ernie received the call to join his favorite quartet. At the time Ernie, who had previously sung with renown songwriter Squire Parsons in his quartet, Redeemed, was doing solo concerts and traveling in his car wherever he was invited to sing. On one particular night in the spring of 1990, Ernie was invited to sing at his alma mater, Oakland City University. Also scheduled at the concert was the Cathedrals. Little did Ernie know that his performance that evening would serve as his unofficial audition for the legendary quartet. The Cathedrals' bass singer, George Younce, was waiting in the wings, backstage, watching and listening to Haase's performance. Obviously, George liked what he heard and saw because, within a week, Ernie was making his way to meet the group for his first performance as the Cathedrals' tenor. Shortly thereafter, Ernie had the opportunity to meet the entire Younce family. Ernie's attention was quickly captured by George's daughter, Lisa, and following a whirlwind courtship, the two married in December of 1990.
Lisa helps Ernie in the Signature Sound office, handling the business affairs of the quartet, and when the two aren't busy working, they enjoy reading, biking and simply spending time together. In his spare time, Ernie enjoys playing basketball, collecting vintage albums of some of the great Gospel quartets and other Southern Gospel artists, and he has a huge collection of many classic recordings along with a wide variety of Elvis Presley memorabilia. Signature Sound's latest single, 'We are the Church', is out now! Each Friday Ernie and the guys offer new music, on their Youtube channel, and conversion and information about all the good things they have planned for you the listener. On today's episode, we chat with Mack Brock! Centricity Music recording artist and songwriter Mack Brock is one of the founding members of GRAMMY Award-winning Elevation Worship. Co-penning some of Elevation’s earliest hits, like RIAA certified Double Platinum® single “O Come To The Altar,” Platinum-certified “Do It Again” and Gold-certified “Resurrecting,” Brock has also written songs recorded by Phil Wickham, Jesus Culture, Passion, Pat Barrett and Bryan & Katie Torwalt, among others.
After a decade with Elevation Worship, Brock released his debut, Greater Things, which garnered him a radio hit with the title-cut. The five-track Covered EP followed the next year, and 2020’s SPACE cemented Brock as a bonafide solo artist. His newest single, the anthemic “Just Like You’ve Always Done,” which is his first for Centricity Music, was co-written with Hank Bentley and Jessie Early. The song boasts of the consistency of God yesterday, today and forever.
“It’s the launching pad of what we believe,” Brock says of the fresh track. “He is the same as He’s always been. He’s the same God that’s the lead character in all the stories we’ve read in Scripture. He’s still working miracles.”
The strength of Brock’s new music rides on the hope he finds in the unfolding story his family is living. The South Carolina native and his wife, Meredith, who currently serves as the CEO of Proverbs 31 Ministries, have three children. From the unexpected joy discovered in foster parenting to leaving the known to pursue the unknown, Brock writes songs to remind his own heart and encourage others that there’s an all-knowing God who is sovereign over it all and is worthy of all our praise.
“With my music, I’m just trying to relive all the times God has shown up,” he says. “I want to use that as a catalyst to build my faith and, hopefully, encourage others in their faith for the future as well.”

Wed, 20 Dec 2023 - 37min - 136 - Episode 132 | Grace Graber | Friday Edition
On today's Friday edition, we chat with Grace Graber! In many ways, Grace Graber is the voice of a rising movement full of people who believe that maybe both faith and mental health matter — in fact, maybe they’re inextricably intertwined.
With a pop-punk sound in the playful yet heartfelt tradition of Avril Lavigne, Grace’s musical message runs in tandem with her viral social media presence. Her candid conversations about mental health, music, and her faith resonate with followers who immediately feel a kinship with her genuine heart. Part of that authenticity stems from the fact that Grace Graber has lived a journey very similar to her listeners.
“This ministry, the rest of my music, none of this is about me,” Grace is quick to say. “It’s about what God wants to do in His people, specifically through mental health. That’s an epidemic right now. We need to be talking about it more. I’m not doing music for me, to get on radio, to get signed. I’m doing music to save lives.”
Not too long ago, Grace Graber was a suicidal teenager struggling with PTSD from severe bullying. Music gave her the ability to survive— specifically, a Hawk Nelson song that met her where she was. In a glorious full-circle moment, Hawk Nelson’s founding vocalist Jason Dunn would later feature on Grace’s song “This One’s For You,” a track from the Conversations EP that was written for anyone in a place like the one she walked through.
“I feel like God opened more doors to healing,” Grace reflects. “It was like opening up a wound and forcing myself to feel some trauma that I didn't realize I could still feel. Now that I have a therapist and a team, now that I’ve done this collaboration and I'm in a healthy place, I'm able to find resolution to it all for my teenage self, who is content and happy and feels valued.”
Songs like “The Light” and “Do It For Me” speak to some of that possibility of healing, with Grace being fixed on the core message: “if God can do it for me, He can do it for anybody.”
Her latest single, 'Superficiality' is out now!

Fri, 15 Dec 2023 - 45min - 135 - Episode 131 | Fellowship Creative
On today's episode, we chat with Derric from Fellowship Creative! Fellowship Creative is a band who wants to help you know Jesus. While most Christian artists begin at their church and then move on, Fellowship Creative is still serving every Sunday at their home church, Fellowship Church. It is there that they reflect the heart of their Pastor, Ed Young, to creatively and passionately introduce people to Jesus. These stories of life change continue to inspire the music of Fellowship Creative. Their most recent project, “Til The Day I Die,” comes from a chapter of grief and loss over the tragic death of friend, family, and team member, LeeBeth Young, the oldest daughter of Ed & Lisa Young. Her death opened up a chapter of asking God tough questions and really working out what it means to trust Jesus. The church was where they processed their pain, and this experience inspired these songs of honest vulnerability, deep introspection, and a renewed level of faith. Every song and artist has a message they want to share. For Fellowship Creative, its simple - Jesus is the hope of the world. And they’ll be writing songs, serving in their church, and spreading that message ‘til the day they die. Their latest album, 'The Help Project", is out now! fellowshipcreative.com @fellowshipcreative christianmusicguys.com @christianmusicguys

Wed, 13 Sep 2023 - 21min - 119 - Episode 116 | Max Lucado tells us God Never Gives Up On You!
On today's episode, we chat with 2 time guest, Pastor Max Lucado! Max Lucado is a pastor, speaker, and best-selling author who, in his own words, “writes books for people who don’t read books.” He serves the people of Oak Hills Church in San Antonio, Texas, and his message is for the hurting, the guilty, the lonely, and the discouraged: God loves you; let him.
As a writer, Max is known for combining poetic storytelling and homespun humor with the heart of a pastor. All of his trade books began as sermon series at Oak Hills Church, and his sermons all begin with Max asking himself this question: “What can I say on Sunday that will still matter on Monday?” He’s been dubbed “America’s Pastor” by Christianity Today, and “The Best Preacher in America” by Reader’s Digest.
Max’s books have sold more than 145 million copies in over 50 languages worldwide. He published On the Anvil, his first trade book, in 1985. His 44th trade book, Help Is Here, was released in 2022. Max’s books regularly appear on bestseller lists, including The New York Times. His writing has also been featured in Bible studies, Bible commentaries, songs, greeting cards, and even plush toys. He is the recipient of the 2021 ECPA Pinnacle Award for his outstanding contribution to the publishing industry.
God Never Gives Up on You is a book for the members of the Lost Halo Society. For the strugglers among us and the fumbler within us. For those of us who are part saint, part scoundrel. We mean well, but we don’t always do well. We have breakthroughs and breakdowns, often in the same hour. We need no reminder of our failures, but we could always use a refresher course on God’s perfect plan to use imperfect people to do great things.
Jacob’s story invites us to believe in a God who sticks beside the unworthy and underachievers and leads us safely home. If God can use Jacob to further his kingdom, he can use us too.

Wed, 19 Jul 2023 - 17min - 111 - Episode 108 | Blessing Offor
On today's episode, we chat with Blessing Offor! Blessing Offor speaks to relatable experiences of struggle, triumph, life, and love from a distinctive perspective as a Nigerian-born, Connecticut-raised, and Nashville-based singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist. Exhibiting virtuosic piano ability, honest songwriting, and a showstopping voice, his musical fluency and creative foresight are unmatched only made more inspiring by his journey.
With five older siblings, Blessing left Nigeria at just six years old to live with his uncle in Connecticut. Glaucoma left him blind in one eye, and Mom and Dad felt he might find better medical care in the United States. He lost sight in the other eye at ten years old due to a water gun accident. Nevertheless, Blessing dove into music. He devoured classics by Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, The Commodores, and Barry White. He was even allowed to listen to Eminem under one condition – “If I said any of the words, my uncle would take it away,” he laughs.
From a young age, Blessing had the natural ability to learn music by ear, developing incredible skill while quickly building his musical index.
“Seeing things differently—no pun intended—helps me elucidate concepts in ways people aren’t used to,” he notes. “Everybody has a different filter and a place they come from. My place was, ‘Oh man, my vision is terrible.’ It was frustrating early on, but it trained my ear.”
Now, this international upbringing, unbelievable journey, quiet grind, and confluence of styles define his 2023 debut full-length album, My Tribe, that brings together soul, pop, R&B, and African styles in service of a universal sound—which he fittingly dubs “the genre of humanity.”
“All of the elements on this record come together to make one whole human,” he observes. “We all have a little bit of spirituality, a little bit of pain, and a little bit of joy. These lyrics are my words from my life. Musically, there’s a lot of who I am! Last but not least, I wasn’t afraid to be honest. There are some heartbreak songs, and there are some more ambiguous songs. This is music for the world. This is music for every universal feeling we have regardless of who we are. Ultimately, I tried to make a life record.”

Thu, 08 Jun 2023 - 12min - 105 - Episode 102 | Cade Thompson is in an Empty Room
On today's episode, we chat with two-time guest, Cade Thompson! Cade has had an affinity with music since his toddler days when even a preschool teacher noticed him frequently harmonizing early on, and eventually progressed through piano, guitar, and drum lessons. After joining the youth worship team in 6th grade, a music mentor came into his life who emphasized the importance of seeking God through the Bible outside of a worship setting. This understanding placed Cade on a deeper course of encountering the love of the Father and seeking His presence more intently. In these early teen years, Cade knew God was calling him into music ministry and giving him opportunities to grow in that calling. His latest album, Empty Room, is available now. This project has 12 powerful tracks including Cade’s current radio single “Good God,” which follows his massively successful “Arms of Jesus” which racked up over sixteen million streams to date!
