- 99 - Ep078 - Invented by Jimmy Eat World
Happy 4 year birthday to the podcast! As per tradition, we do a Jimmy Eat World record every year and we've made our way to the 2010 album Invented by the kings of emo from Arizona. This record definitely had a tough task of following four PERFECT albums in a row from Jimmy Eat World (Clarity, Bleed American, Futures, Chase This Light), and we'll admit it was hard for it to live up its predecessor. But - spoiler alert - the whole album is a bit of a "grower, not a show-er" for us. What do you think?

Celebrating its 20th anniversary, we explore everything from the album's production with Neil Avron to the cameos from the likes of Mark Hoppus on the album. We'll share why tracks like "My Friends Over You" have left a lasting mark on the punk scene and what made New Found Glory different than other pop-punk bands. Join us for a mix of nostalgia, analysis, and behind-the-scenes insights into one of the early 2000s' defining punk rock albums.

Relient K nailed it with their follow up to their breakout album, Mmhmm. Five Score takes what worked about the previous album and gets even more ambitious - specifically ending the album with an 11 minute epic. We think they strung together a perfect three records with this sandwiched right inbetween MmHmm and Forget and Not Slow Down.

Hayley Williams is the G.O.A.T. Yeah, we said it. Now, listen to us say it for 2 hours straight.
After the departure of the brothers Farrow, I don't think any of us imagined we'd be getting this album. But it turned out Hayley Williams' pipes weren't Paramore's only secret weapon, because Taylor and Jeremy also kicked their musicianship to a higher gear, and we'd argue the band was better off in the long-run letting Taylor take over all guitar work. Their 2013 release went on to be the band's first platinum album, and gave us the inescapable classic "Ain't It Fun", which we'd argue is one of the best songs of the twenty-teens.
They also managed to make the only album with interlude tracks worth a damn, so there's that.

We're back!!! We took some time off, but we're back to our regularly scheduled programming. Thanks for sticking around!
What a weird little gem of a 70s record this album was in a sea of the giant drums and guitars of 2006. The Format's sophomore effort sees the beginnings of what would become Nate Ruess'' next project, fun., with Jack Antonoff. That obviously went on to be a huge success, but if you haven't listened to this one, you absolutely should. It's a hell of an album, and we're sad we didn't get more from The Format.

Finding Emo, now in video form! We're trying a new thing and going to start releasing episodes in video form on Youtube and Spotify. Let us know your thoughts! We went out of order on blink-182 albums, but are finally getting around to discussing the band's monstrous follow up to Enema of the State. Singles "The Rock Show", "First Date", and "Stay Together For the Kids" contributed to the album selling over 15 million copies worldwide, but we love the whole dang thing. But you can hear the tension. Mark Hoppus, Tom DeLonge, and Travis Barker had different ideas of how to follow up the success of Enema - they managed to make this stellar record. Track listing 1. "Anthem Part Two" 2. "Online Songs" 3. "First Date" 4. "Happy Holidays, You Bastard" 5. "Story of a Lonely Guy" 6. "The Rock Show" 7. "Stay Together for the Kids" 8. "Roller Coaster" 9. "Reckless Abandon" 10. "Everytime I Look for You" 11. "Give Me One Good Reason" 12. "Shut Up" 13. "Please Take Me Home"

We'd honestly forgotten about this record, which is a shame because it holds up much better than a lot of the other pop-punk released around the same time. We think it's a travshammockery Motion City Soundtrack isn't more widely considered the face of the genre. They've got everything we love and came it hot with their follow up to Commit This To Memory. This album is underrated. Full stop.

The So Impossible EP turned 20 years old this week! In what should've been a shorter episode based on the math of this only having 4 songs, the guys ramble on about how dating was different in 2001 (they assume, even they've all been married for at least a decade) and how much they love this EP.

Sorry about the long break! Kyle and Blake had colds, Blake's computer crashed, Blake's audio equipment didn't work after his computer got fixed, Kyle got busy with work...basically, we failed you all. It won't happen again. Or it will. Time will tell. ANYWAY! Back to talking about great 2000s albums, and this one is a doozy. Join us for a chat about our second Death Cab record on the show.

Despite the debut from Panic! selling over 2 million copies, the guys are not as impressed with it as you'd think. They think th $11k budget and 18 year old band members makes more sense as a measuring stick for the quality than the 2 million albums sold. Tue, 28 Sep 2021 - 1h 12min - 37 - Ep037 - Paper Walls by Yellowcard
While Yellowcard admittedly had a slight downturn post Ocean Avenue with their 2006 album Lights and Sounds, they were back to being one of the best pop-punk bands of the 2000s with the quick follow up, Paper Walls. It's one of Blake's all time favorites, and his wife has zero interest in it. It's a real tragedy.

Tue, 01 Sep 2020 - 1h 39min - 10 - Ep010 - Ocean Avenue by Yellowcard
Let's talk about punk rock with a violin! Specifically, Yellowcard's super successful Ocean Avenue album. Spoiler alert: Blake doesn't shut up about how much he like's all of Yellowcard's bridges in their songs.
Ocean Avenue on Spotify and Apple Music The OKC Green Door show was Oct 22, 2003 and Ocean Avenue was released on radio Dec 16, 2003, for reference. Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer, The Amazing Spider-Man) directed the Ocean Avenue music video, which is awesome. Ben Harper went on to be the founder and CEO of Takeover Records Ryan Key’s vocal surgery was between Lights and Sounds and Paper Walls, and their hiatus was 2008-2010 between Paper Walls and When You’re Through Thinking, Say Yes albums. This is when he did his Big If side project, as well. Maybe Ryan Key uses the Silicon Valley “Middle Out” methodology for writing bridges? (Hilarious, but very NSFW) Only One Video (he puts the flower in a gun, by the way. Not a tank, as Kyle kept claiming. But standing in front of the tank as if he’s the guy in Tiananmen Square is so cringe-worthy we can’t believe they thought it was a good idea). Kris kept messing up the lyrics of the “Believe” bridge, which are “Want to hold my wife when I get home” Blake was a little wrong. The speech in the background of Believe is a combined speech on the 1st anniversary of 9/11 between Michael Bloomberg and NY Governor George Patki. The part in the bridge is Bloomberg, and the end of the song is Pataki reading the Gettysburg Address. As much as Blake likes history, he’s really beating himself up for not recognizing that last line as being from maybe the most famous speech in American history. If saying “Californ-i-a” good enough for Dr. Dre, it’s good enough for Blake. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/finding-emo/supportTue, 18 Aug 2020 - 1h 37min - 9 - Ep009 - Slowly Going The Way Of The Buffalo by MXPX

On this episode we talk about The Starting Line’s underrated sophomore effort, Based On A True Story. While the lead single originally left a very very bad taste in Kris and Blake’s collective mouths, they’ve since come around to realizing what Kyle knew all along; this album is a masterpiece.
Note: While this is technically edited to be “clean”, we do talk at length about the song Bedroom Talk so maybe skip that part if you’ve got kids in the car? K.

Based On A True Story on Spotify and Apple Music A&M got merged into Universal back in 1999 Jason Tate’s original Absolutepunk.net review of the album Kris wasn’t wrong - Autography literally means “Autobiography” The Harden GIF (pronounced with a hard G, by the way).
