Sun, 01 May 2022 - 1h 13min - 59 - ICYMI: Taking an Integrative Approach to Lyme Disease
Nature’s dirty needle. That’s how Lyme disease researchers and physicians refer to the ticks that spread the bacterium, Borrelia burgdorferi, throughout the northeastern, mid-Atlantic, and north-central United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that illnesses from mosquito, tick, and flea bites have tripled, with more than 640,000 cases reported during the 13 years from 2004 through 2016. During that time period, nine new germs spread by mosquitoes and ticks were discovered or introduced into the United States. Lyme disease is a complex illness whose diagnosis and treatment requires a deeper understanding than just the characteristics of the infection, says like tick-borne disease researcher Andrew Heyman, MD, MHSA. It is an often misdiagnosed, misunderstood disease that behaves in ways that makes it very difficult for standard tests to identify correctly. Dr. Heyman, an internationally recognized expert in Integrative Medicine and the Director of the GW Integrative Medicine Fellowship Program at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. He is a ‘last resort’ practitioner for patients with this multi-system illness. Three Lyme disease takeways from Dr. Heyman: 1.) Other biotoxin exposures, such as mold, can mimic Lyme disease and therefore increase the difficulty of obtaining an accurate diagnosis. 2.) The body's reaction to a Lyme infection is a genetically mediated, Neuro-inflammatory response that can persist in about 20 percent of patients, even long after the infection has been treated. 3.) The consequences of chronic inflammation due to Lyme disease can be devastating, including organ injury - especially to the brain and nervous system more broadly - and even induce persistent, aberrant gene expression, leading to loss of normal cell functioning. Thu, 14 Apr 2022 - 26min - 58 - The Many Faces of Vitamin C
For many people, vitamin C was the first vitamin they had ever heard about – and it is mostly due to one man: Dr. Linus Pauling. His work put vitamin C in the collective unconsciousness, especially for its role in the common cold. Because of Dr. Pauling's efforts, the Linus Pauling Institute (LPI) at Oregon State University now stands as a world leader in the study of micronutrients, phytochemicals, and other dietary factors, and the role these compounds can play in promoting optimum health or preventing and treating disease. So, there is no better person to talk to us about vitamin C than LPI's own expert, Alexander Michels, PhD, who has an extensive background in the research on vitamin C, with a specialty in understanding vitamin C transport through the body. His expertise also extends to research on other aspects of antioxidant vitamin metabolism and the action of phytochemicals. ◘ Related Links LPI's Micronutrient Information Center https://bit.ly/3JYMdV5 LPI's Vitamin C page https://bit.ly/36H8KYg LPI Webinar: What You Need to Know about Vitamin C and COVID-19 https://bit.ly/35q12RB Is IV vitamin C effective against COVID-19? https://bit.ly/3wOWmA8 ◘ Transcript https://bit.ly/38apg3j ◘ This podcast features the song “Follow Your Dreams” (freemusicarchive.org/music/Scott_Ho…ur_Dreams_1918) by Scott Holmes, available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial (01https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/) license. ◘ Disclaimer: The content and information shared in GW Integrative Medicine is for educational purposes only and should not be taken as medical advice. Sat, 15 Jan 2022 - 27min - 53 - What Docs Do When They Get Sick
All working parents know that “all kids get sick” is the mother of all truisms. But what do doctors and other health care providers do when they or their loved ones come down with a cold, tummy ache, or something more serious? Today, we get to be a fly on the wall for a free-wheeling conversation between physicians Marianna Shimelfarb, MD, who specializes in Integrative Family Medicine, and Mikhail “Misha” Kogan, medical director of the GW Center for Integrative Medicine and geriatrician with GW Medical Faculty Associates and the GW University Hospital. These long-time friends let loose on everything, from kids with bloody head injuries requiring sutures to one of them being recently diagnosed with Lyme disease. They talk about conventional modalities vs. integrative; and why physicians fear losing their own agency when they get sick, being subject to someone else making decisions, and more. Dr. Shimmelfarb has a passion for providing quality care with an integrative approach. She practices patient-centered care and uses her knowledge of evidence-based complementary medicine treatments in combination with her training as an allopathic physician. Fri, 15 Oct 2021 - 23min - 49 - Demystifing Medical Cannabis & CBD for Clinicians & Consumers
Marijuana (cannabis) has been used for thousands of years as a medicine, but it has been illegal in the United States for most of our lives. Almost all states have now legalized its medical use, and many consumers and health professionals are exploring it as an alternative to conventional treatments. There’s substantial evidence that marijuana is a safe and effective treatment for chronic pain, chemo side effects, sleep and mood disorders, MS, and Parkinson’s disease, among others. But there’s also misinformation about marijuana on social media. And most clinicians have limited knowledge on the subject, while dispensary staff (aka “budtenders”) lack medical training. GW Integrative Medicine co-host Mikhail Kogan, MD, a renowned expert on Integrative Medicine, medical cannabis, and CBD, along with Joan Liebmann-Smith, PhD, hope to change that with their new book—“Medical Marijuana: Dr. Kogan's Evidence-based Guide to the Health Benefits of Cannabis and CBD” with forward by Dr. Andrew Weil. Dr. Liebmann-Smith is an award-winning medical writer, medical editor, and medical sociologist. She’s written 5 books on various healthcare topics, and her articles have appeared in numerous national print and online publications, including AARP Bulletin, Newsweek, and the Huffington Post. She is also a consulting editor for Memorial Sloan Kettering’s dermatology service. ◘ Related content Medical Marijuana: Dr. Kogan's Evidence-based Guide to the Health Benefits of Cannabis and CBD by Mikhail Kogan, MD, and Joan Liebmann-Smith, PhD https://bit.ly/3D8rIBR 2017 National Academy of Sciences report on "The Health Effects of Cannabis and Cannabinoids: The Current State of Evidence and Recommendations for Research." bit.ly/2H0DnJa The International Cannabinoid Research Society, (ICRS), is a source for impartial information on cannabis and the cannabinoids that provides an open forum for researchers to meet and discuss their research. icrs.co/ Dr. Kogan's interview with Dr. Donald Abrams, internationally known medical cannabis expert bit.ly/38NllWQ Dr. Kogan's interview on Medical Cannabis for Chronic Pain Guidelines https://bit.ly/3F2n4Xx ◘ Transcript https://bit.ly/3F2huVh ◘ This podcast features the song “Follow Your Dreams” (freemusicarchive.org/music/Scott_Ho…ur_Dreams_1918) by Scott Holmes, available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial (01https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/) license. ◘ Disclaimer: The content and information shared in GW Integrative Medicine is for educational purposes only and should not be taken as medical advice. Tue, 22 Dec 2020 - 40min - 34 - BONUS EPISODE: Embracing the Medical Humanities
NOTE: We recorded this bonus episode before the COVID-19 pandemic forced us to cancel the HEAART lecture series. We hope to re-launch it sometime in 2021. Today, we’re talking about the Medical Humanities with Linda Raphael, PhD, who directs the Medical Humanities Program and Track here at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. Dr. Raphael brings to this discipline a background of teaching and scholarship in 19th and 20th century American and British literature, holocaust literature, and philosophy. Dr. Raphael holds an MA in History and a Ph.D. in English and studied philosophy as a postgraduate at Oxford University. She was a faculty member at Ohio State University before joining the faculty in the GW Department of English in 1996. In 2005, she developed courses in narrative and medicine and became the Director of Medical Humanities at SMHS. Her research and writing are increasingly directed toward narrative and medicine, including “how doctors listen to patients” and “what patients want in a physician.” We discuss the following: 1. What are the Medical Humanities? 2. How were you introduced to the Medical Humanities? 3. How do the Medical Humanities impact patient care? 4. What does the research tell us about the benefits of the Medical Humanities? 5. Tell us a little bit about your research and writing on narrative and medicine. 6. How do you incorporate the Medical Humanities into physician wellness? ◘ Related Content GW Office of Medical Humanities https://smhs.gwu.edu/medicalhumanities/ Medical Humanities: An international journal published by the BMJ https://mh.bmj.com/ The Importance of Medical Humanities https://www.mededpublish.org/manuscripts/1958 Why are medical humanities relevant in an era of technologically-driven healthcare? https://www.healthethicsblog.com/single-post/2018/02/21/why-are-medical-humanities-relevant-in-an-era-of-technologically-driven-healthcare ◘ Transcript http://bit.ly/2IYEuwe ◘ This podcast features the song “Follow Your Dreams” (freemusicarchive.org/music/Scott_Ho…ur_Dreams_1918) by Scott Holmes, available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial (01https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/) license. ◘ Disclaimer: The content and information shared in GW Integrative Medicine is for educational purposes only and should not be taken as medical advice. Mon, 30 Nov 2020 - 31min - 32 - COVID-19 & the Telehealth Tipping Point
With Americans going into and out of and into quarantine again, there has been an explosion in the use of telehealth during the COVID-19 epidemic. Telehealth refers broadly to electronic and telecommunications technologies and services used to provide care and services at-a-distance. The biggest barriers to telehealth—namely, government and payer resistance and HIPAA patient privacy restrictions—came crumbling down amid the COVID-19 pandemic, reports the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota. Telehealth is now at a tipping point that has driven a new way of thinking in the sense of how efficient and powerful these tools can be for health care consumer and provider alike. Today we talk with telehealth pioneer Randy Parker, Founder and CEO of Genius Rx, a full-service, online pharmacy that officially launched this month to make access to medicines, OTC products, and wellness supplements simple, intuitive, and personal but at-a-distance. Randy, who is also the Founder and former CEO of MDLIVE, brings more than 30 years of experience starting and building successful, disruptive, consumer-focused companies using the latest technologies. ◘ Related Content GeniusRx https://welcome.geniusrx.com/app/ Implications for Telehealth in a Postpandemic Future https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2766369 Telehealth: A Balanced Look at Incorporating This Technology Into Practice https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/2377960818786504 Barriers and Facilitators That Influence Telemedicine-Based, Real-Time, Online Consultation at Patients’ Homes: Systematic Literature Review https://www.jmir.org/2020/2/e16407/ Pandemic triggers big swings in prescription drug use https://abcnews.go.com/Health/wireStory/pandemic-triggers-big-swings-prescription-drug-71118246 ◘ Transcript https://bit.ly/3jIUoHd ◘ This podcast features the song “Follow Your Dreams” (freemusicarchive.org/music/Scott_Ho…ur_Dreams_1918) by Scott Holmes, available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial (01https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/) license. ◘ Disclaimer: The content and information shared in GW Integrative Medicine is for educational purposes only and should not be taken as medical advice. Sun, 31 May 2020 - 41min - 26 - Nutrition Education: Answering the Call
In this episode of the GW Integrative Medicine podcast, we talk about a nutrition education collaboration between the Department of Physician Assistant Studies and the Integrative Medicine Programs here at the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences. In the studio, we have Susan LeLacheur, DrPH, MPH, PA-C, a professor in the Department of Physician Assistant Studies at the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences. Dr. LeLacheur has more than 35 years of clinical experience in primary care, HIV/AIDS, and infectious disease. She is the section director for the GW PA Program’s Foundations of Medicine Gastroenterology Section, and the driving force behind PA nutrition week. Dr. LeLacheur and Dr. Leigh Frame developed this nutrition curricula. As the authors of a JAMA opinion piece recently put it, "Nutrition education in medical school is rudimentary, at best, and limited for the duration of graduate medical education for many specialties." Doctors and PAs are educated the same way and suffer the same educational deficit. The goal of the PA nutrition week curriculum is to give PAs in training the knowledge, skills, and confidence that studies say prevent health care professionals from counseling their patients about nutrition. ◘ Related content GW Department of Physician Assistant Studies https://smhs.gwu.edu/physician-assistant/ Physician Assistants Ideal for Patient Nutrition Education https://www.physicianspractice.com/blog/physician-assistants-ideal-patient-nutrition-education Food Deserts in D.C. | NPR | Let's Talk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQeorPkPLmU Nutrition Education in Medical School, Residency Training, and Practice https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2729245 PA Experts Respond to Pressing Nutrition Questions https://www.aapa.org/news-central/2019/03/pas-ask-experts-pressing-nutrition-questions/ Nutrition in Medical Education: A Systematic Review https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanplh/article/PIIS2542-5196(19)30171-8/fulltext ◘ Transcript https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/transcript-nutrition-education-answering-call-gw-office-of/ ◘ This podcast features the song “Follow Your Dreams” (freemusicarchive.org/music/Scott_Ho…ur_Dreams_1918) by Scott Holmes, available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial (01https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/) license. ◘ Disclaimer: The content and information shared in GW Integrative Medicine is for educational purposes only and should not be taken as medical advice. Thu, 30 Apr 2020 - 15min - 25 - What to Stock In Your Pandemic Pantry
Many of us are trying to flatten the coronavirus curve by practicing social distancing. We're staying inside, working from home, and figuring out ways to keep ourselves and our families entertained. A lot has changed in the past few weeks but one thing that hasn't is our need to eat. Today we’re talking about stocking your pantry during a pandemic with Danielle Capalino, MSPH, RD, and the author of the books, “Healthy Gut, Flat Stomach” and “The Microbiome Diet Plan.” An expert on nutrition and the gut microbiome, Danielle is in private practice in New York City and an adjunct faculty in the School of Medicine and Health Sciences. Thu, 26 Mar 2020 - 22min - 24 - Breaking the Cycle of Physician Burnout
Burnout is more prevalent among healthcare and health sciences workers, professionals, and trainees than among the general U.S. population. Those working in the healthcare field are more susceptible to depression, anxiety, and job dissatisfaction, which can lead to adverse outcomes for healthcare workers as well as the patients and communities they serve. Evidence shows, however, that effective wellness programming and strong institutional leadership committed to a culture of wellness can make a difference. That's why GW launched the GWell Center for Healthcare Professionals, which is led by Kaylan Baban, MD, MPH, the inaugural chief wellness officer for GW Hospital, GW Medical Faculty Associates, and the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences. An assistant professor of Medicine at the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences, Dr. Baban is also the director, Lifestyle Medicine Program, at GW Medical Faculty Associates. Mon, 06 Jan 2020 - 24min - 21 - Integrative Medicine & Women's Health
Earlier in 2019, we collaborated with the GW OB/GYN Department and the GW Center for Integrative Medicine on a Grand Rounds lecture and Q&A on taking an integrative and functional medicine approach to Women's Health. It was so impactful that knew we had to bring it to the podcast. Today we're joined by certified nurse midwife Kimla McDonald, an associate clinical professor with the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS), and Anjali Dsouza, MD, an assistant clinical professor also with GW SMHS. CNM McDonald attended Frontier Nursing University, where she received her training as a nurse-midwife. She has worked with women and families for the past 15 years in San Francisco, New Orleans, and the Washington DC metro area. Along with interests in natural childbirth and primary cesarean prevention, complementary therapies for women's health, the transition to menopause, and mind-body therapies, she is committed to teaching and learning with residents, medical and midwifery students, and patients. Tue, 22 Jan 2019 - 18min - 8 - New Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans: Getting Granular
Today we talk about the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, 2nd edition, with GW's Loretta DiPietro, PhD. She was one of 17 nationally recognized experts in physical activity and health to be appointed to the 2018 Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee. The Advisory Committee did a systematic review of the scientific evidence over a two year period. In February 2018, they submitted a Scientific Report to the HHS Secretary. This report helped inform the new guidelines. This is the first time the federal physical activity guidance have been updated since 2008 Dr. DiPietro is a professor and outgoing chair of the Department of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences at GW’s Milken Institute School of Public Health. She is a widely published researcher with particular interest in the role of physical activity in the health of older adults. She has been awarded grants from the National Institute on Aging and the American Cancer Society, and she lectures at medical schools, public health schools and other organizations around the world. * Dr. DiPietro referred to the 2020 Guidelines at the 29-minute mark. She meant to say the 2028 Guidelines. ◘ Notable Updates The previous guidelines stated that only 10-minute bouts of physical activity counted toward meeting the guidelines. This requirement has been removed because all activity counts. There are immediate health benefits, attainable from a single bout of activity, including reduced anxiety and blood pressure, improved quality of sleep, and improved insulin sensitivity. There are more long-term benefits from physical activity, including improved brain health, reduced risk of eight types of cancer (previously two), reduced risk for fall-related injuries in older adults, and reduced risk of excessive weight gain. Physical activity helps manage more chronic health conditions. It can decrease pain for those with osteoarthritis, reduce disease progression for hypertension and type 2 diabetes, reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, and improve cognition for those with dementia, multiple sclerosis, ADHD, and Parkinson’s disease. There are new key guidelines for preschool children to be active throughout the day to enhance growth and development. ◘ Related Content HHS Press Release on the News Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans https://www.hhs.gov/about/news/2018/11/12/hhs-releases-physical-activity-guidelines-americans-2nd-edition.html Download the Complete Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, 2nd edition https://health.gov/paguidelines/second-edition/pdf/Physical_Activity_Guidelines_2nd_edition.pdf Scientific Report of the 2018 Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee https://health.gov/paguidelines/second-edition/report/ ◘ Transcript https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/transcript-new-physical-activity-guidelines-americans-gw-office-of/?published=t ◘ This podcast features the song “Follow Your Dreams” (freemusicarchive.org/music/Scott_Ho…ur_Dreams_1918) by Scott Holmes, available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial (01https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/) license. ◘ Disclaimer: The content and information shared in GW Integrative Medicine is for educational purposes only and should not be taken as medical advice. Thu, 27 Sep 2018 - 34min - 5 - Nutrition and the Gut Microbiome
The gut microbiome has been linked to a wide range of diseases including diabetes, autism, anxiety, and obesity and may affect how patients respond to chemotherapy or other medicines. How can the gut microbiome have so many roles? How does nutrition and the diet affect this? Scott Jackson, PhD, leader of the recently created Complex Microbial Systems Group at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) joins GW Integrative Medicine Podcast to discuss the gut microbiome and how nutrition interacts with this hot new organ. https://www.nist.gov/mml/bbd/microbial-metrology Dr. Jackson is leading international efforts to improve microbiome and metagenomic measurements by organizing inter-lab studies, developing reference materials and reference methods, and developing in vitro tools that allow us to better understand microbial community resilience and evolution. Prior to joining NIST, he was a principal investigator with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). At the FDA, his research focused on characterizing the global genomic diversity of enteric pathogens, with applications for food safety, bioforensics, and public health. ◘ Information from this Episode NIST, formerly known as the National Bureau of Standards, promotes and maintains measurement standards. It also has active programs for encouraging and assisting industry and science to develop and use these standards. Leigh A. Frame, PhD, MHS, mentions attending the Special Nutritional Requirements Workshop at the Natal Academy of Medicine where they discussed how fiber is not a nutrient with current definitions. Fri, 22 Jun 2018 - 27min - 3 - Taking an Integrative Approach to Lyme Disease
Nature’s dirty needle. That’s how Lyme disease researchers and physicians like Andrew Heyman, MD, MHSA, refer to the ticks that have spread the bacterium, Borrelia burgdorferi, throughout the northeastern, mid-Atlantic, and north-central United States. Earlier this month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that illnesses from mosquito, tick, and flea bites have tripled, with more than 640,000 cases reported during the 13 years from 2004 through 2016. During that time period, nine new germs spread by mosquitoes and ticks were discovered or introduced into the United States. Lyme disease is a complex illness whose diagnosis and treatment requires a deeper understanding than just the characteristics of the infection, says Heyman. It is an often misdiagnosed, misunderstood disease that behaves in ways that makes it very difficult for standard tests to identify correctly. Dr. Heyman, an internationally recognized expert in Integrative Medicine and the Medical Director of the Integrative Medicine Program at The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, is a ‘last resort’ practitioner for patients with this multi-system illness. His attributes his aptitude for finding answers to puzzling patient presentations to his background in Traditional Chinese Medicine combined with his conventional medicine training. ◘ Related Content ◘ Transcript ◘ This podcast features the song “Follow Your Dreams” (http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Scott_Holmes/Corporate__Motivational_Music/Follow_your_Dreams_1918) by Scott Holmes, available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial (01https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/) license. ◘ Disclaimer: The content and information shared in GW Integrative Medicine is for educational purposes only and should not be taken as medical advice.
