"Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest." - Matthew 21:9
Most people know this famous passage in the New Testament when Jesus is welcomed into Jerusalem with shouts of praise and palm branches waving. The very first Palm Sunday about two thousand years ago is commemorated each year in Christian churches and kicks off Holy Week. During this worship service, many churches will sing the famous Palm Sunday hymn, Hosanna, Loud Hosanna by Jeanette Threlfall.
In this special episode, we're diving deep into the Palm Sunday story, taking a close look at this hymn. We recorded this episode live at our home church, First Baptist Church in Reading, MA. The video is on our YouTube channel. Did you know we have a YouTube channel? Please LIKE and SUBSCRIBE!

Sun, 27 Aug 2023 - 90 - 86. Peace, Be Still
When Jesus says these words in the New Testament commanding the winds and the waves to stop, the disciples on the boat were left in awe. We read the words today and are reminded of God's sovereignty that everything in Creation belongs to Him and He is in control.
We absolutely loved diving into this hymn. It's an old one, with some archaic language, but the message of this hymn is so important for us today. It is also called by the first line, Master, the Tempest is Raging. Do you know this one? Do you like to sing it?

Hymn writer Sanford Fillmore Bennett basically crafted the phrase, "the sweet by-and-by" after a conversation with his friend, fellow hymn writer Joseph Philbrick Webster. Then the two gentlemen wrote the hymn together in less than 30 minutes!
We loved learning about this hymn and we hope you do too!

Mon, 07 Nov 2022 - 72 - 68. At the Cross (Alas And Did My Savior Bleed)
This is a beautiful, powerful hymn that we are so excited to be diving into. We sang this as kids in our church and we can remember having so much fun with it. The tune is bouncy and peppy and just FUN to sing. Examining the hymn all these years later, so much of the meaning was lost on us as kids. This hymn is just FULL of Scripture and theology and Christian doctrine.
Here are some things that we talk about in the episode:

Mon, 10 Oct 2022 - 70 - 66. Praise My Soul the King of Heaven
THANK YOU for finding Hymn Talk Twin Talk. If you're interested in WATCHING this episode, please look for us on YouTube! This episode will be available on Tuesday, September 27.
Episode 66 is a special episode! At the time of our recording, people all over the world were grieving Queen Elizabeth. We did a little digging and found that the hymn Praise My Soul the King of Heaven was a special hymn to her. It had been sung at her wedding, at her coronation, at her jubilee, and at many weddings and funerals in the royal family.
The beautiful text by Henry Francis Lyte was inspired by Psalm 103. There are many beautiful tunes to go with the words. We're sharing a few different tunes in the episode, but we will mostly focus on the tune by John Goss that Queen Elizabeth preferred.
Thank you for listening, thank you for supporting Hymn Talk Twin Talk! We pray that this episode was a blessing to you. Please let us know what you thought about it. If you could leave us a review/rating on your podcast app, we would greatly appreciate it. We'll be back on Monday, October 10 for a brand new episode!

EPISODE 65 is a SPECIAL one!
We have Kellie's husband, Danny, joining us! He has picked the hymn and stays for the entire episode to chat about this modern song. Many people categorize this as a Catholic hymn, but it's so beautiful and so powerful that it really has crossed over to many other Christian churches. We sing this in our Baptist church! Do you sing this in your church?
Join us for a little pop quiz of.... How Well Do You Know Your Old Testament Prophets? You'll probably do better than we did!
The stories of the prophets are so important to know and learn from. May we all be like Isaiah and say, "Here I am, Lord." What a powerful message for Christians today!

It is a FULL hymn, acknowledging all that God has done for us, and then praising Him!

Mon, 29 Aug 2022 - 67 - 63.LIVE episode - More About Jesus
This episode was recorded LIVE at the First Baptist Church in Reading, MA. Every once in a while we get the opportunity to present a Hymn Talk Twin Talk message during a worship service. We are grateful for these opportunities!
You can hear our other LIVE episodes when we talked about I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day on episode 46 and then again, on episode 55 with Beneath the Cross of Jesus.
The Scripture passage for today's episode is Philippians 3:1-11.
Finally, my brothers, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you is no trouble to me and is safe for you.
Look out for the dogs, look out for the evildoers, look out for those who mutilate the flesh. For we are the circumcision, who worship by the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh—though I myself have reason for confidence in the flesh also. If anyone else thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more: circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless. But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith— that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.

Mon, 27 Jun 2022 - 63 - 59. How Can I Keep From Singing?
Knowing all that God has done for us, this question just rings so true.... How CAN we keep from singing?
This hymn, also known by its first line, My Life Flows on in Endless Song, was written by a Baptist minister named Robert Lowry. Christian Author, Kara Hunt, brought this one to our attention and she is even on today's episode to talk about it. Kara is also talking about her brand new book, Paper Dolls.
We are having our very first Hymn Talk Twin Talk Book Club to read and discuss the book with Kara. We will meet virtually on Tuesday, August 2, at 6:00 EST. We hope many of you will join us!

Sun, 12 Jun 2022 - 62 - 58. He Leadeth Me
He Leadeth Me O Blessed Thought.... and what a blessing it is to think about God taking us by the hand, leading us, and feeling His presence!
This hymn came in as a request from our dear friend, Barbara. She remembers sitting in the church pew, sitting at her mom's side, hearing her sing this song. Hymns can bring such comfort and reassurance, they can remind us of God's love and faithfulness, and they can bring up sweet memories from childhood. We are so happy that we got to dive into such a sweet hymn for our friend, Barbara.

Mon, 02 May 2022 - 59 - 55. Beneath the Cross of Jesus mini-episode
Happy Resurrection Day to our Hymn Talk Twin Talk family!
We are so excited for you to hear this episode. How much do you know about this hymn and its author, Elizabeth Clephane? You will notice that this is a shorter episode than what we usually do. We actually presented this episode LIVE to our church family on Sunday, April 10, 2022. You will hear us singing in a trio with one of our church family members, Stephanie Pothier. We love her alto voice! You will also hear a dear friend, Diane Waddell, on violin. You will hear it exactly the way our church family saw it. Mon, 18 Apr 2022 - 58 - 54. O Sacred Head Now Wounded
O Sacred Head Now Wounded....
Originally a Latin poem from the 1200's, a tune was added, then translated to German, re-harmonized by a famous Baroque composer, and eventually translated to English... we finally see this poem in American hymnals after the year 1829.
This hymn took quite the journey to get to us and it's all focused on Jesus's crucifixion. His journey to the cross was the greatest event in human history and his resurrection is the greatest miracle in history! We are so happy to be talking about this hymn this week.

Mon, 11 Apr 2022 - 57 - 53. Lead Me To Calvary
Do you have songs you sing every year during Lent? Do you have hymns that are only sung during Holy Week and not during any other times of the year?
This hymn, commonly referred to as Lead Me to Calvary, but also known as King of My Life, I Crown Thee Now has been a Holy Week staple in our church for years. We are so grateful that we got to dive into this one, learning about a female text writer who is NEW to us and remembering a much-loved composer.
If you do not know this song, maybe you can make it a part of your Lent tradition this year. Please sing along!

Mon, 21 Mar 2022 - 56 - 52. Faith Is The Victory
Taken right from the Bible, these words are powerful, encouraging, and TRUE! The poet, John Yates, had such a way with words that when our composer, Ira Sankey, read his poems, he immediately recruited him to write gospel songs for the tent meetings that he and Dwight Moody were running all over the United States and abroad.
These two men were quite a pair writing many gospel hymns together, but Faith Is The Victory is arguably their most well-known.
Thank you for listening! Please sing along! We are sharing lots of music today!

Mon, 24 Jan 2022 - 52 - 48. Be Thou My Vision
What a way to start 2022! Our first episode of the new year is all about praying for wisdom, guidance, and strength, and promising to put God first in all things.
Our friend Emily requested this hymn and we are so thankful we got to learn about it. From St. Patrick in the year 433 to the churches of Ireland in 2020, we see that this hymn has a timeless message. Many hymn that utilize the old-fashioned language such as thee and thou have been lost or updated with contemporary language. We are so impressed that this hymn has been preserved all this time. God has a message for us all with this hymn. What is this hymn saying to you today?
If you're curious about some of the things we talked about today, please visit these sites:
The Irish Blessing from Ireland churches
We hope you enjoy learning about this old hymn. This old hymn that was forgotten about for centuries... God took what was dead and made it alive again; God took what was ancient and made it new; God took what the world ignored and made it into something beautiful.
God bless you as you listen today!

Thu, 23 Dec 2021 - 50 - 46. LIVE episode - I Heard the Bells on Christmas
Merry Christmas to our Hymn Talk Twin Talk family!
We are so excited for you to hear this episode. How much do you know about this hymn and its famous author, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow? You will notice that this is a shorter episode than what we usually do. We actually presented this episode LIVE to our church family on Sunday, December 19, 2021. You will hear us playing handbells. You will hear our congregation singing along. You will hear it exactly the way our church family saw it. If you would like to see this episode on video, please head on over to our Youtube channel: Hymn Talk Twin Talk.
Because it's a shorter episode, you won't hear anything about the hymn's composer John Baptiste Calkin. We will definitely be revisiting I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day in a future episode.
Thank you for listening. Thank you for supporting Hymn Talk Twin Talk.
May your heard be lifted in praise this Christmas for the wonderful gift of Jesus and the joy He brings to our lives. Have a wonderful Christmas and blessed 2022!

Mon, 06 Sep 2021 - 41 - 39. Just as I Am
Published in over 1700 hymnals, and immensely popular due to its use in the Billy Graham crusades, we think everyone knows Just As I Am.
Do you know it? Does your church have an invitation?
This is a beautiful Invitation Hymn, inviting people to just come as they are. Billy Graham's longtime music director, Cliff Barrows said, "We always began with 'Just As I Am' because Billy felt it was the most effective invitation hymn, inviting people to make a commitment to Christ."
May this episode be a blessing to you. Share it with someone who needs to be reminded of the joy and peace we find with Jesus. He promises that when we come to Him, He will receive us, welcome, pardon, cleanse, and relieve.

Mon, 30 Aug 2021 - 40 - 38. Praise to the Lord, the Almighty
Psalm 103:1
Praise the Lord, my soul; all my inmost being, praise His holy name.
This hymn is a hymn of PRAISE taken straight from the PSALMS. We are so excited to bring this hymn to you all this week. The original German words were by Joachim Neander and we only know this hymn because of English translator Catherine Winkworth. She translated Neander's text almost 200 years after he wrote it.
This hymn has truly stood the test of time and has crossed languages and borders. Please sing along and let's praise our Lord, our Almighty King of Creation together.

Mon, 23 Aug 2021 - 39 - 37. By His Stripes We Are Healed
Stump the Twins! This hymn is definitely one that not only stumped us, but it seemed to stump the whole internet!
We could not find a recording of this hymn anywhere. We had never heard of it and were determined to bring light to this little-known hymn and honor the hymn writer, Thoro Harris, for his incredible contributions to church music.
This hymn came in as a request from the creator of A Hymn A Day, Ashley. She brought this hymn to our attention and we hope we did it justice. You can find Ashley on Instagram (@hymn.a.day) and on Facebook (A Hymn A Day). Follow her to get lovely, inspiring stories about the hymns EVERY DAY!
Thank you for listening to this episode on Thoro Harris. With the hundreds of hymns to his name, we will definitely be revisiting him in a future episode. Please reach out to us on social media or by email and let us know what your experience with the hymn is. Have you heard it before? We are so curious!

Psalm 51:7
... wash me and I shall be whiter than snow.
We are diving into the hymn of confession this week, Whiter Than Snow, by James Nicholson and William Fischer. Inspired right from Psalm 51, this song is a beautiful prayer, a longing for cleansing and wholeness. We pray that this episode will be a blessing to you all.
These hymn writers' stories make us want to visit Philadelphia. What a city! Full of history and brotherly love... AND two very special churches, Wharton Wesley and St. George's, PLUS one very special cemetery.

Mon, 09 Aug 2021 - 37 - 35. The Eastern Gate
We love our friends on social media! This request came in from a Twitter follower and it's a totally BRAND NEW hymn for us. Could this be a new game of... Stump the Twins? You really stumped us with this one. Not only did we not know this song, but we had never heard of it nor the hymn writer.
Join us this week as we dive into the Eastern Gate. What is it? Where is it? What does it symbolize? What was the hymnwriter Isaiah Guyman Martin thinking when he wrote it?
Martin wrote several eschatalogical hymns and we just love talking about and singing about HEAVEN. At the end of the episode, sing along with us for a Name That Tune segment all about HEAVEN. Please let us know what heaven songs you'd like to hear in the future!
Soon and Very Soon.... we'll be singing hymns at the Eastern Gate. What a WONDERFUL thing to think about!

A loyal listener and friend of Hymn Talk Twin Talk requested the wonderful hymn for this week's episode. Thank you, Jill, for suggesting Love Lifted Me by James Rowe and Howard E Smith. We love this song!
We remember singing this song with its bouncy, playful rhythms at church. As children, we thought it was just a fun song to sing and sway to. All these years later, taking a close look at it for the podcast, we just fell in love with it all over again.

This is the long-awaited EPISODE 33!
Thank you for being patient with us. After some troubling technical difficulties, we are FINALLY releasing this episode and we are so excited!
'Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus is a beautiful hymn written under some tragic circumstances. We pray that hearing Louisa Stead's heartbreaking story will inspire you and challenge you to put your trust in God no matter what.
The words of Louisa Stead and the music of James Kirkpatrick marry to create one of the prettiest hymns we've ever done on Hymn Talk Twin Talk.

God wanted this song to be written and Richard Blanchard himself said, "There have been a few moments in my life where things have come from God, there is no other way to explain them."
"Like the woman at the well, I was seeking...." Richard Blanchard's testimony is 100% relatable. We search for things that will satisfy and this song points us directly to God. Praise the Lord!

Mon, 19 Apr 2021 - 28 - 26. He Lives!
Happy Second Sunday of Easter! We serve a risen Savior and He IS in the world TODAY! How amazing to think about our Savior, the King of the world, who is ever-present in our world, interceding on our behalf. We see His hands of mercy, we hear His voice of cheer!
Rev. Alfred Henry Ackley wrote this hymn in 1933 to answer the question... Why do we worship Jesus? So many reasons!
In this episode, we talk about Rev. Ackley and his talented brother, Bentley Together, they wrote thousands of hymns. We'll probably be re-visiting these musical brothers in the future.

Fri, 02 Apr 2021 - 25 - 24. All Glory, Laud and Honor
Hosanna in the highest! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!
It was a joyful day on that very first Palm Sunday. The atmosphere was jubilant as Jesus made His way into Jerusalem. They hailed Him as King, the one who would save them.
And He did. He saved all of us! He deserves our thanks and praise and that's what Palm Sunday is all about. It was a party in Jerusalem that day, so it's only fitting that we are especially joyful in today's episode. Especially joyful... and giggly. The first minute of the episode could have ended up on a blooper reel! (If we had such a thing!) Listen, laugh, and sing along as we celebrate this most joyous day.
All Glory Laud and Honor spans centuries, countries, oceans, and languages. This is our oldest hymn to date, with the original Latin text by Theodulf of Orleans circa 820 (we call him Theo), music by Melchior Teschner and English translation by John Mason Neale.
Thank you for listening! Please find us on social media and send us a message or an email to request a future hymn. We have some AWESOME Easter hymns to share with you in the coming weeks, but after that, we would love to know what YOU would like to hear.

Mon, 22 Mar 2021 - 23 - 22. Christ Receiveth Sinful Men
Jesus Christ RECEIVES and LOVES sinful men.... and women... and children... basically all living creatures! Listen in as we dive into this old hymn that, despite its old-fashioned language, is wonderfully joyful even today in 2021. We can rejoice that Jesus loves us... even the sinfulest. (Is that a word?)
The text was written by the German pastor, Erdmann Neumeister. Neumeister was preparing a sermon on The Parable of the Lost Sheep and was inspired to write the poem. Not only did he prepare his sermon that week... he also wrote a hymn to go with it! It must have been a busy week for him.
Download this episode today! Laugh, sing, and worship right along with us.

Sun, 20 Dec 2020 - 14 - 13. A Christmas Hymn For Our Weary World
This week's Christmas hymn originated in France by a well-known composer of opera and ballet. It is one of the hardest songs to sing with an octave and a half range, lots of sustained notes, and complicated diphthongs. It's been recorded by some of the best singers of our time, including Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, and Idina Menzel.
We are especially excited to share the music of singer/guitarist Chris Moller who will be singing O Holy Night at the end of the episode. You can find more of his music on his Youtube channel: Chris Moller
We are also thrilled to be sharing the music of singer/violinist/pianist Chris Stephens. What a blessing to hear his violin this week! You can follow Chris on Twitter: @chrisstephens1
Lamentations 3:22-23
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.

Sun, 06 Dec 2020 - 12 - 11. Advent Hymn: I Will Be Present Tomorrow!
This week starts Advent! As we prepare for the arrival of our Lord and Savior, let's sing some beautiful hymns. This week, we're discussing a hymn that was sung hundreds of years ago. We love learning about hymns that have really stood the test of time. It's no wonder why this one has been around for so long when you examine the lyrics. They proclaim the truth as to who God is and what He promises us!
In this hymn, we call Jesus by many names: Emmanuel, Son of God, Lord of Might, Key of David, Branch of Jesse's Stem... we could keep going.
He is the King of Nations and the King of Peace and He gives us HOPE. May God bless you as you listen to this episode and as you begin the Advent season.

We would like to wish you all a very happy Thanksgiving! We are thankful that we have this podcast that we can share with all of you. Thank you for listening, thank you for supporting us!
This week, we will dig deep into our oldest hymn yet. The German words date back to 1636. The words were written during a time in the writer's life that was tremendously challenging and painful, personally and globally. The hymn writer knew that God was with him the whole time and for that, he wanted to express his thanks.

Psalm 104:33
Sun, 11 Oct 2020 - 4 - 3. He's Kind Of a Big Deal!
We LOVE this HYMN!! This hymn has a lot of local connections for us. The words traveled from Canada, to California, to London, and then to Massachusetts, where they found their permanent home with a hymn writer here in Boston. Without a musician's training, this hymn writer edited hymnals, wrote hymns, and taught the people in his church to sing. His story is inspiring and very special to us!
