Sat, 18 May 2024 - 18min - 12 - KKBC Season 2 : Episode 3 - Manga
Welcome to the Kiwi Kids Book Chat with school librarians Penny Walch and Julie Huggins.
We love this episode where we interview three of our Year 8 boys from last year about their love of Manga.
Whilst this is a Kiwi Kids Book Chat (the emphasis being on Kiwi Books) we couldn't pass up the opportunity at the end of 2023 to talk to three Kiwi Kids about their passion for Manga.
So whilst none of the books mentioned are authored by kiwis, it is most certainly a nod to the fact that manga is exploding in popularity in NZ...
Manga series mentioned in the episode:
For younger readers:
Yokai Watch
Pokemon
The boys also mentioned 'gag' manga as being suitable for younger readers. Some may well be, but certainly not all!
Suitable for intermediate readers:
One Piece
Naruto
Fairy Tail
My Hero Academia
Spy X Family
Death Note
Bakuman - Manga about Manga
For older readers: Bleach - the boys talk about this and Common Sense Media is a bit conflicted as to the age appropriateness of the anime tv series, ranging from 8+ to 16+ so we shall err on the side of caution...

Sat, 04 May 2024 - 20min - 11 - KKBC Season 2 : Episode 2 - ANZAC
Welcome to the Kiwi Kids Book Chat with school librarians Penny Walch and Julie Huggins.
Well we are back into it! This episode took about three attempts and it still isn't perfect!! But if we aim for perfection, nothing is ever going to happen - so here it is in all it's imperfect glory. We haven't really got on top of the sound quality, and for that we apologise, but there are lots of great suggestions of ANZAC books to investigate.
This week's episode makes mention of the following books:

Anzac Day Parade by Glenda Kane

Sat, 20 Apr 2024 - 21min - 10 - KKBC Season 2 : Episode 1 - Reintro
After a 2 year hiatus, the reason for which is explained within, Teacher-Librarians Julie Huggins and Penny Walch are relaunching their podcast which aims to highlights books by kiwi authors, as well as books which are being read by kiwi kids.
The technical side of things is NOT their forte, so do please excuse some of the ghostly voices...
... and for some bizarre reason, known only to some higher force, Julie and Penny refer to each other as Mrs Huggins and Mrs Walch in this episode, which makes them sound quite Dickensian.
