Were you born in the Seventies? Join us for the sounds of the 70s every Saturday morning. Martin and Venetia will take you to the decade of denim flares, burnt orange kitchen bench tops and the birth of disco and glam rock! Each week we’ll have a 70’s theme that we’ll explore, such as songs from disaster movies, movement anthems, one hit wonders, daggy duets, funky numbers, and disco tracks that steamed up the dance floor in many an LGBTI venue, to name just a few. The 70s produced some amazing music and we’re here to make sure that music is shared and never lost. NOTE: Due to music licencing requirements this podcast is unavailable outside of Australia.
- 115 - Soulful sounds
Soul – one of the great musical genres to come out of mid 20th Century America, and a sound that still reverberates through pop music today. Sharing it’s gospel roots with jazz, funk, blues and even rock, soul can be a hard genre to draw a neat boundary around, but it’s one of those things that you know it when you hear it. Tending to favour virtuoso vocals, horns, rhythm sections at the forefront and a passionate feel, soul was the secular sibling to gospel and originally exclusively performed by African American artists. But many white artists from around the globe who grew up loving soul, started incorporating a soul feel into their sound. This week’s show explores just a few of these soul influenced tracks.
Wed, 20 Nov 2024 - 56min - 114 - Countdown Anniversary
Fifty years ago, on November 8, 1974, the first episode of Countdown went to air on the ABC. It would go on to have many Australians glued to their TVs for an hour a week, getting their dose of Australian and international pop music news, performances and interviews for the next 13 years. The impact of Countdown on Australian music culture cannot be overstated. It was an institution, a cultural phenomenon, and it helped to shape the musical landscape of a whole generation – a generation which included the hosts of this show. This week’s show celebrates the 50 year anniversary of Countdown’s first airing, featuring artists that performed during the Seventies.
Tue, 12 Nov 2024 - 55min - 113 - We’re a bit picky
This week our hosts are taking a break from the themes and just picking a few tracks they feel like playing. As usual, it’s an eclectic but tasty mix. Some we’ve played before, some entirely new. But all guaranteed to satisfy even the pickiest Seventies connoisseur. Enjoy
Mon, 28 Oct 2024 - 55min - 112 - Super Seventies
We’re super excited! This week we explore superb, superior, supreme Seventies songs with super either in the title or in the name of the artists. Why? Well, because it’s super fun. And we’ve certainly found some super tracks. Proving, once again, that there is no decade like the Seventies for truly super music.
Wed, 23 Oct 2024 - 55min - 111 - Seventies covers of Seventies songs
Long live the cover version! Sometimes other artists do it better, sometimes they just do it differently, but it’s always interesting to hear a great song reinterpreted. In the Seventies great cover songs could be released practically on the heels of the original. On this week’s show we explore just a few of these Seventies cover versions that had already been released in the same decade.
Mon, 14 Oct 2024 - 55min - 110 - We’re turning five!
Yes it’s happy birthday, happy anniversary and how-the-heck-is-this-little-show-still-going to us! We have had the enormous pleasure of bringing fabulous Seventies music to you for the past five years. So this week’s show is all about the number 5 – whether that’s band members, band names or song titles, the number 5 is where it’s at. Cheers! And may there be many more.
Tue, 08 Oct 2024 - 55min - 109 - Great Debut Albums
This week we are showcasing tracks from what we consider to be some of the great debut albums of the 1970s. There are way too many to cover them all in just one show, but we think we’ve put together a great selection, including Patti Smith (or course), The Saints, Skyhooks, Kate Bush and many more.
Wed, 02 Oct 2024 - 55min - 108 - Up and down
Life is full of ups and downs and it turns out that the Seventies music catalogue is as well. In this week’s show, all of our songs feature either up or down in the title, demonstrating that there’s nothing like a bit of turbulence to generate some good lyrics. So let’s get up and dance, get down tonight, give it up and stir it up with some great Seventies tracks.
Sun, 29 Sep 2024 - 55min - 107 - Your cheating heart
Who are they, and what are they to you? That’s what we want to know this week, as we explore Seventies songs about cheating and affairs. It’s all about lying eyes and cheating hearts and the wrong kind of loving. Oooooh you done me wrong! But you know what? After all is said and done, can we still be friends?
Tue, 10 Sep 2024 - 54min - 106 - We can work it out
This week we are revisiting the Sixties by way of the Seventies. A few weeks ago we looked at what the individual Beatles members got up to in the Seventies after they disbanded. On today’s show we explore how the music of the Beatles continued to reverberate through the Seventies by playing some of their most well known songs as covered by other artists. It really is hard to overstate the significance of the Beatles to modern music, and just how loved so many of their songs are.
Mon, 02 Sep 2024 - 55min - 105 - Precious (not heavy) metals
On this week’s show we’re mining the archives for Seventies songs featuring some kind of metal in the title. We’ve found rich seams of gold rings and hearts, and silver eyes and ladies, and some less flashy metals, like tin men and brass bands. But whether they are pure or alloy, all the tracks on today’s show are precious in their own way.
Tue, 27 Aug 2024 - 55min - 104 - More songs with names
While undeniably most songs about people are simply written to a nameless ‘you’, ‘she’ or ‘he’, some songwriters seem to be inspired by particular individuals and want to name names. This week we return to a theme we haven’t visited in a while and bring together tracks from the Seventies featuring a person’s name in the title. Kiss apologises to Beth, Billy Paul yearns after Mrs Jones, ABBA encourages Helen, and Rick James expresses his love for Mary Jane, in just a few of our selection.
Mon, 19 Aug 2024 - 56min - 103 - Fade to white
This week we are bookending last week’s all black show with a show featuring all tracks with white in the title. Simple! We do love an easy theme 🙂 But while the theme may be a bit trite the music is anything but. There’s some punk, some easy listening, some rock – we’ve got it all. So let’s fade to white….
Mon, 12 Aug 2024 - 55min - 102 - In the black
This week we’re getting a bit dark and moody. We thought to do a ‘black and white’ show, in which all the songs had either black or white in the title, but there turned out to so many we decided to break it up into two shows. This first one features the black songs – Seventies tracks with black in the title. There’s leather, there’s water, there’s coffee, there’s paint. Turns out there are many black things that inspired songwriters from this era.
Thu, 08 Aug 2024 - 55min - 101 - Over to you
This week we’re getting a break from the heavy lifting as we have asked YOU, our listeners, to pick the tracks for the show. And, as usual, you’ve done a brilliant job. What a great show! What great taste you all have! A little bit of rock, a touch of glam, a pinch of folk. Overall a very tasty mix. Nice work gang.
Sun, 28 Jul 2024 - 55min - 100 - After the Beatles
The Beatles were the band of the 1960s, but released their final album in 1970 and broke up amid bad feeling and significant artistic differences. Each member of the Fab Four went on to release solo recordings in following decade, as well as produce records and write songs for other artists. On this week’s show we explore what happened after the biggest band in the world broke up.
Sun, 21 Jul 2024 - 55min - 99 - Even more glam
We had so much fun getting glam last show, we thought we would do it again. So strap yourselves in for even more glam rock. Yes, bigger, hair, longer lashes, tighter pants and higher platform shoes – this show we’re dialing it up to 11. You’re welcome
Wed, 17 Jul 2024 - 55min - 98 - Getting glam
Tight satin pants? Check. Long flowing locks? Check. Bit of lippy and some eye liner? Check and check. It’s glam rock! Where boys and girls will be whatever they like as long as the fans are adoring and the records are selling. We’re not trying to be all earnest and authentic here, we understand the game and we’re in it for the fame. Bring it on. In fact, get it on.
Sun, 07 Jul 2024 - 55min - 97 - Money, money, money
It’s the end of the financial year and everyone is having a sale. We’ve scrabbled through the bargain bin and found a few fabulous musical items that need to go. All our tunes this week have something to do with money, dollar bills or gold. Get in now, because it’s all going for a song.
Mon, 01 Jul 2024 - 55min - 96 - Even hornier
We just can’t get enough horns! And it seems our listeners can’t either. After our last show featuring Seventies tracks with fantastic horn sections we got a request to play some more. So without further ado, here are some more punchy, snappy, bright and brassy horns.
Sun, 23 Jun 2024 - 55min - 95 - Guitar heroes
Aah the guitar. Perhaps the quintessential instrument of the modern era. So popular that nearly everyone cans strum a few chords and whip one out round a campfire for a singalong, and so versatile that guitar is a central component of almost all modern musical genres. Yet only a few players have risen to the dizzy heights of guitar virtuoso, and many of these were wielding their instruments and thrilling us with compelling riffs and beguiling solos in rock bands of the Seventies. On this week’s show we highlight these guitar heroes and their talents. Long may they rock.
Sun, 16 Jun 2024 - 56min - 94 - Feeling Brassy
How do you add brightness, punch, syncopation, emphasis and groove to a song? Why add a horn section of course! And the Seventies featured some fantastic horn sections and horn players. Tower of Power, the Memphis Horns, the Phoenix Horns, Maceo Parker, the list goes on. This week we highlight the glorious, joyous horns of Seventies music.
Sun, 09 Jun 2024 - 56min - 93 - Taking a progressive turn
Way back in the 1970s, not everyone was getting sweaty at a disco or grooving to soul music. No indeed, for some music lovers, nothing could be more transporting than settling in to the bean bag and poring over the latest fantastical triple-gatefold album cover while listening to some complex, lengthy, and conceptual progressive rock. Its critics often characterised prog rock as pretentious, pompous, and taking itself way too seriously, but for its fans, progressive rock has always had the power to exhilerate in a way other music cannot. On this weeks show, we explore some tracks from prog rock’s hey day in the early 1970s and find out just why the fans love this genre so much.
Sun, 26 May 2024 - 55min - 92 - The only prescription is more cowbell
Today’s show is a tribute to the humble cowbell. So, uncelebrated and yet such an essential feature of rock, funk and latin music. It doesn’t play melody, being only one note, but it does add texture, syncopation and drive to any track. For as long as we’ve been human we’ve clapped our hands, stamped our feet and hit two sticks together to create a beat. The cow bell is the perfect beat keeper, resonant and loud enough to cut through amplified rock guitars and the noise of a full drumkit. Even today, along with all the other bits and pieces of expensive and elaborate kit in the studio or on the stage, the simple cow bell has pride of place.
Sun, 19 May 2024 - 56min - 91 - Boogie Mama
Happy mother’s day to all the boogie mamas! Yes it’s that time of year again where we all say a big thank you to the mamas. Mamas who rock, mamas who boogie, mamas who get down and mamas who keep it funky. Today’s show is for you.
Sun, 12 May 2024 - 55min - 90 - The A to Z of Seventies music, part three
This week it’s part three of our exploration of Seventies musical artists in alphabetical order. On this week’s show, we continue our journey through the alphabet, covering the letters Q to Z. Yes, it’s all the tricky letters, including Q, U, X, Y and Z. And what do you know? We managed to find tracks for them all.
Thu, 09 May 2024 - 55min - 89 - The A to Z of Seventies music, part two
Last week we brought you part one of our exploration of Seventies musical artists in alphabetical order. On this week’s show, we continue our journey through the alphabet, covering the letters I to P. From Iggy Pop to the Pointer Sisters, it’s an orderly progression through some Seventies fabulousness.
Sun, 28 Apr 2024 - 55min - 88 - The A to Z of Seventies music, part one
We love a theme challenge here at Living in the Seventies. A little while ago the team from Saturday Breakfast gave us the idea to create some shows using the alphabetical as an organising theme. Of course 26 tracks is more than we can fit into one show, so welcome to part one of three shows featuring tracks from Seventies artists in alphabetical order! And yes, we even got tracks from artists starting with U and X. Cool, eh?
Sun, 21 Apr 2024 - 55min - 87 - Happy birthday to me
Last week we celebrated Marty’s birthday, this week it’s Venetia’s turn. All of the tracks this week have been chosen by Marty in Venetia’s honour. Did he choose as well as Venetia did? We’ll soon find out. Happy birthday Venetia!
Sun, 14 Apr 2024 - 56min - 86 - Happy birthday to you
It’s Marty’s birthday! To celebrate, this week all of the tracks have been chosen by Venetia in Marty’s honour. Did she choose well? Marty will be the judge. Happy birthday Marty!
Sun, 07 Apr 2024 - 55min - 85 - Let’s get spiritual
It’s that time of year again, when in recognition of a certain event on the Christian calendar (though with deeply pagan roots), we trawl through the Seventies musical canon for songs with a spiritual bent. And there are plenty to choose from. So if you fancy something a little uplifting to accompany you while you butter your hot cross buns and hunt for easter eggs, we’ve got the perfect playlist for you.
Sun, 31 Mar 2024 - 56min - 84 - Even more up close and personal
We had so much fun travelling down memory lane last week, paying track from artists we have seen live, that we though we would do it again. This week we remember even more concerts, featuring artists who were releasing music in the Seventies.
Mon, 25 Mar 2024 - 55min - 83 - Up close and personal
There’s nothing quite like seeing your favourite musicians play live. This week our hosts remember concerts they’ve been to, featuring artists who were releasing music in the Seventies. It’s a trip down memory lane exploring the the incredible role that music plays in our lives, and a reminder to buy the tickets and get out there and go to the shows.
Sun, 17 Mar 2024 - 55min - 82 - Howdy Pardner
This show aired on Chill Out Festival Sunday, the festival in Daylesford in country Victoria that marks the end of Pride festivities and events for the year. To honour this fabulous event, we thought we would play some tracks that are either country, or country music inspired. It’s been a very long time since we’ve done a country show. It’s a broad genre – not all of it will be everyone’s cup of joe, but there’s bound to be something that gets you bootscooting. Yeehaw
Sun, 10 Mar 2024 - 55min - 81 - Scales, fur and feathers
This week our show aired on World Wildlife Day, so we thought we would feature songs with some kind of animal in the title. Not all of the animals are wild and, to be honest, most of them are metaphors, but we think it’s been a great theme to highlight just some of the amazing music from the Seventies. We’ve got snakes, dogs, eagles, spiders and many more. Where would we be without animals? Not just facing extinction ourselves, but also without metaphorical songwriting richness. Perhaps not quite as important as saving the planet, but a good reason nevertheless to take action to support wildlife. Just imagine if we could never aspire to soar like an eagle?
Sun, 03 Mar 2024 - 55min - 80 - Whistle while you work
Aaah work. We all have to do it at some stage in our lives. Sometimes we love it, sometimes it’s a grind, but everybody has to pay the bills somehow. It takes up a huge part of our lives, so it only stands to reason that songwriters are going to have something to say about it. Sure enough, there are a few songs out there talking about finding work, doing work and leaving work. So if you are at work and able to put on the headphones or the speakers to keep you company while you hustle, we have the perfect playlist.
Sun, 25 Feb 2024 - 55min - 79 - Get your boogie on
On this week’s show we’re getting down, we’re getting it on, we’re steaming up the dance floor, and we’re having a boogie. So if your toes are tapping and you just can’t stay in your seat, you can blame it on the boogie. Or maybe, you can blame it on JOY’s Saturday Breakfast Show, as they challenged us to fill a whole show with songs with boogie in the title. Easy! We could have filled a few. And maybe we will. In the meantime, here’s just a taster of Seventies boogie fabulousness.
Sun, 18 Feb 2024 - 55min - 78 - Gone but not forgotten
On this show we play tracks that were recorded and released around 50 years ago. It’s impressive that so many of the artists responsible for those tracks are still going strong, with plenty still touring and making music. But sadly its inevitable that as the years pass, more of these artists pass away. On today’s show we celebrate some of those that left us in 2023. They may be gone, but their wonderful music lives on.
Sun, 11 Feb 2024 - 56min - 77 - All Australian
This week it’s our annual all Australian show, featuring Australian tracks by Australian artists (and perhaps a wee contribution from across the ditch). Some of these we’ve played before, some we haven’t, but they are all fabulous and serve to showcase the incredibly diverse talent in Australia in the Seventies.
Sun, 28 Jan 2024 - 55min - 76 - Songs of 1974
It’s our first show for 2024 and, as has become tradition on Living in the 70s, we look back to songs released a half century ago in 1974. And what a great year for music this was! Funk was in its prime, bands were still exploring prog rock, and disco was just starting to emerge. So this week’s show presents a curated mix of classic numbers and little known gems, showcasing the brilliance of 1974.
Sun, 21 Jan 2024 - 56min - 75 - Happy new year!
It’s our New Years Eve party show! Yes we’re closing out the year with some classic Seventies party tracks, songs that make you tap your toes or bring partying to mind in some way. Old classics shall never be forgot, after all. It’s New Years Eve – its more than a feeling, and we should be dancing and living life in the fast lane. Happy new year!
Sun, 31 Dec 2023 - 55min - 74 - Step into Christmas
Yes it’s that time of year again, we’re donning our gay apparel, decking the halls, stuffing the turkeys, and wrapping the prezzies. So many tasks, so many decisions, so much to do! Luckily we’re here to take the stress out of the music selection for the perfect Christmas celebration. Once again we bring you a delightful selection of 70s Christmas cash ins, err.. classics. So top up your eggnog, tuck into a mince pie and enjoy the show. Merry Christmas everyone!
Sun, 24 Dec 2023 - 55min - 73 - Hits of 1973
As 2023 draws to a close, we take a look back at tracks that were number one hits 50 years ago. These songs are half a century old but still sound fresh (well, mostly), which just goes to show that music listeners in the Seventies had great taste. As do you 🙂
Sun, 17 Dec 2023 - 55min - 72 - Life is but a stream
As the year limps toward a close, those of use who use music streaming services are getting sent our round ups of what we listened to most during the year. Unsurprisingly, our hosts’ lists heavily feature songs and artists from the Seventies. So on this week’s show we feature tracks that appear in Marty and Venetia’s lists of most streamed songs from 2023.
Sun, 10 Dec 2023 - 55min - 71 - Happy birthday JOY!
30 Years ago on December 1, World AIDS Day, JOY Radio was formed. Since then JOY has been a major part of the LGBTQIA+ community in Melbourne, and now around Australia. Media plays a hugely important role in helping us recognise ourselves, connect with community and explore and share our experiences, and JOY is no exception. So a big happy birthday to JOY!. Thank you so much for enabling us to share our show and our love of Seventies music. And in honour of the occasion, today’s show features artists from our fabulous LGBTIQA+ community.
Sun, 03 Dec 2023 - 57min - 70 - Hallowed Halls
Every November, a handful of luminaries whose musical careers have spanned more than 25 years are inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Given the career length requirements, its no surprise that artists from the 1970s often feature, and this year is no exception, with Kate Bush, Chaka Khan, Willie Nelson and Bernie Taupin all inducted. The process for nominations and inductions are not without controversy, but while we might wonder why some artists get overlooked (you don’t have to look hard to notice an outrageous lack of women, for example) it’s hard to argue with the worthiness of those that do make the list. In honour of this annual event, all artists featured on todays show are hall of fame inductees
Sun, 26 Nov 2023 - 55min - 69 - Universal children
This week, in honour of Universal Children’s Day, Marty and Venetia are embracing their inner child. It turns out plenty of Seventies artists did too, writing songs about wild children, hot children, problem children and boogie children. So get out your play dough and your colouring pencils and join us for some musical play time!
Sun, 19 Nov 2023 - 55min - 68 - We don’t want to stop
Stop! Have you heard? This week’s show features Seventies songs with ‘stop’ in the title! Our lovely fellow presenters from Weekend Breakfast challenged us with the theme, and we think we’ve risen to the challenge. So stop what you’re doing, stop the distractions, stop listening to boring, and tune in to our stop show!
Sun, 12 Nov 2023 - 55min - 67 - We’ve got the music in us
This week we’re going all meta and self referential. Yes, all the music on today’s show is about, well.. music! We love music, we’re into the music, we’re listening to the music, we’re playing that funky music.. you get the idea 🙂 So join us and some great Seventies acts as we celebrate the fabulousness of music.
Sun, 05 Nov 2023 - 55min - 66 - Movie night
The Seventies was a great era for film and a great era for movie sound tracks. These week we pick some of our favourite songs from Seventies flicks. While not all of the films are worth revisiting, the music certainly is. So sit back, grab your popcorn and let us transport you to the big screen sounds from 50 years ago.
Sun, 29 Oct 2023 - 55min - 65 - A Seventies banquet
As we have discovered here at Living in the 70s, songwriters love a metaphor. On this week’s show we explore songs from the Seventies featuring food, usually as a stand in for something else – so sex is a custard pie, life is a minestrone and love is as sweet as honey. But sometimes it’s actually food, and Harlem is completely out of greens, because the vegetable man is on strike. Either way, these songs feed our souls in the most delightful and nourishing way. So come enjoy our banquet!
Sun, 22 Oct 2023 - 55min - 64 - Women represent!
The Seventies featured some amazing female talent, but it could sometimes get lost in a sea of songs released by men. A 2017 study looking at the top 50 songs from every even numbered year between 1960 and 2008 found that out of the total of 1250 songs only 26% were performed by women, and 7.6% by mixed gender groups (ref). (Interestingly, the study also found that 57% of all songs used the word love, and 22% of all songs included a sexual reference, typically via metaphor. No surprises there).
So to even the scales somewhat, every now and then here at Living in the 70s we like to dedicate an entire show to tracks released by female artists. Some of these artists made it big, some didn’t, but they were all fabulous.
Sun, 15 Oct 2023 - 55min - 63 - We’ve turned 4!
It’s our birthday! Yes, Living in the 70s is 4 years old, and we have loved every minute of it. We hope that you have too. In honour of this momentous occasion, Marty and Venetia have chosen songs somehow related to the number 4. It turns out to make an eclectic but very enjoyable mix. Happy birthday to us!
Sun, 08 Oct 2023 - 58min - 62 - Find us under ‘elders’
This week features the International Day of Older Persons and, well, Marty and Venetia are undeniably older persons. In fact, if you search the JOY website for podcasts, you can find our show filed under the category of ‘elders’. However, while the music from the 70s was made half a century ago (and add some years for your hosts), we think it remains as fresh as if it was made yesterday. This week we pick some of our faves to share with you.
Sat, 07 Oct 2023 - 55min - 61 - Shake your body
Yes it’s another disco show! One of the most significant and perhaps influential musical genres to come out of the 1970s, disco forever democratised the dance floor. You didn’t need a partner to get your groove on. You didn’t need to be straight, white and following a man’s lead. You didn’t need to be doing certain steps at a particular time (though of course you could if you wished). You just needed to feel the beat and move your hips and get on out to the dance floor, baby. And many of the big disco hits of the day, still make us itch to dance, fifty years later.
Sun, 24 Sep 2023 - 55min - 60 - It’s alive!
There’s something about seeing the music you love performed live. While studio albums may have more polish, there’s an anergy and immediacy at a live performance that just can’t be beat. While some bands and solo artists from the 1970s are still active, many have now retired, or passed away, or the band has broken up – it was half a century ago, after all – and getting to a show is impossible. Well, thank goodness so many of the great concerts from that time were recorded and released on live albums. Live albums are time machines, they take us back to the electrifying atmosphere, the crowd, the groove, the sweaty realness of the performance. On this week’s show we play some of our favourite tracks from some of the great live albums from the 1970s.
Sun, 17 Sep 2023 - 57min - 59 - Feeling frisky
Did we mention last week that it’s Spring? Well it is, and we’re shaking off the Winter doldrums, feeling the sun on our faces and starting to feel a little frisky. It’s the time of year when, well… in the words of Bad Company, many of us “Feel Like Makin’ Love”. If that’s you, and you need sound track to fit the mood, we have got you covered this week with our show chock full of sexy songs.
Sun, 10 Sep 2023 - 58min - 58 - We’ve got Spring fever
Aaaah it’s Spring and we are all unfurling in the sunshine like little darling buds of.. well, September. We’re opening up the doors and windows and letting in the light and looking for soundtracks that fit the mood. Well look no further, because it’s our Spring show, full of Seventies music to lift the spirits and welcome the sun.
Sun, 03 Sep 2023 - 55min - 57 - It’s our 200th show!
Yes, the little 70s show that could has been going for 200 shows! That’s a lot of music, and to commemorate the occasional, Marty and Venetia have scrolled through the whole play list from every show and picked some tracks that they have really enjoyed discovering or sharing with you over the last almost 4 years. Thank you so much for listening. Here’s to 200 more!
Sun, 27 Aug 2023 - 56min - 56 - Let’s get married
This week, in honour of Marty’s nephew getting hitched, Living in the 70s is heading to the altar and playing tracks that have something to do with marriage. Not all the songs are happy, or romantic – turns out not all is fair in love or marriage – but they sure are fun.
Unfortunately, Venetia’s expensive microphone suddenly said “I don’t” halfway through the show, so some of the sound quality is less than stellar. Rest assured, she will be sourcing a new one before the next show.Sun, 20 Aug 2023 - 57min - 55 - Only young once
This week it’s International Youth Day, so on today’s show we pay homage to some of our favourite Seventies artists who started their careers at a very young age. Some people just know, from the first moment they pick up a guitar, have their first solo in a choir or sit down at a piano, that making music is their life’s purpose. And some of those people are lucky enough to turn it into a brilliant career.
Sun, 13 Aug 2023 - 55min - 54 - Even more explosive hits!
This week’s show is chock-a-block with scorching hits! Yes, it’s yet more ripper tracks from Seventies compilation albums. Who knows what we might play…
Sun, 06 Aug 2023 - 55min - 53 - What are friends for…
This week our show airs on International Friendship Day. And what says friendship more than sharing a microphone while staring deeply into each other’s eyes? And no, we aren’t talking about Marty and Venetia. We’re talking Seventies duets! Think Marvin and Diana, Barbra and Neil, Peaches and Herb. What could be better than good friends (or at least mostly cordial acquaintances) coming together and making beautiful music together? Not much, not much at all.
Sun, 30 Jul 2023 - 56min - 52 - Games people play
Life is a games and so is love, according to many of the artists featured on this week’s show. There is a bit of skill, a touch of luck and a whole lot of strategy involved in making it through the vagaries of life and relationships. And in honour of World Chess Day, on this show we present a selection of tracks lamenting or celebrating the games we play.
Sun, 23 Jul 2023 - 56min - 51 - Explosive Hits!
Before streaming services, podcasts, the interwebs and search engines, if you wanted to discover new music you had to have a wide circle of friends, browse the record store, or attentively listen to the radio. And then along came the compilation album – a mix of a selection from the hits of the day and a few ‘filler’ tracks thrown in for substance and variety. Without the help of personalised algorithms, these albums could be hit and miss. But among the big hits could often be found some genuine lesser known gems that might take you to the work of artists that you had never heard before. So prepare to be dazzled with some explosive rippers on todays show featuring some of these fabulous tracks.
Sun, 16 Jul 2023 - 55min - 50 - Hot stuff
Last week we focused on the cold and wintry, this week we decided to at least entertain the fantasy of heat, even if the winter weather feels like it’s here to stay. So our tracks today have something to do with heat – most of them featuring the kind of heat generated by rubbing two people together. Phew… is it getting hot in here?
Sun, 09 Jul 2023 - 56min - 49 - Winter melody
It cold and wet this week in many parts of Australia. The nights are long, the days short and grey, and the wind is whistling around the corners and finding its way under the collar of your coat. Great weather for sinking into the couch under a lap rug with your favourite tipple and tuning into a podcast, and we’ve put together the perfect wintery sound scape to keep you company. Brrr!
Sun, 02 Jul 2023 - 57min - 48 - Let the dollar circulate
Yes here on Living in the 70s it’s our EOFY sale – fabulous Seventies tracks at bargain basement prices. We’re doing a stock take, clearing the back catalogue and letting things go for, well… basically nothing. Yes that’s right, everything must go. Sadly, not everything in life was free for our artists this week – not even love, it seems. Getting money, holding on to money and circulating money were real concerns. So it only seems fitting that just as the financial year draws to a close we do a show featuring all things money.
Sun, 25 Jun 2023 - 55min - 47 - Reeling in the years
Last week the hosts had so much fun just picking five random songs we liked, that this week we’ve decided to do it again. Marty gets a little schmaltzy and dives in his skin tight jeans ever more deeply into the pillowy realms of soft rock. While Venetia, wondering if Marty is quite ok, dons her beret and black turtleneck and shares a couple more pretentious jazz-funk numbers from the smoky back room. It was a very big decade, the Seventies. Turns out there is plenty of room for everyone’s listening pleasure.
Sun, 18 Jun 2023 - 55min - 46 - Flying high on a good thing
This week Marty and Venetia are flying without the auto pilot and heading wherever they like. Yes, that’s right, this show there is no theme. It host’s choice, or perhaps whim. Where will we land? Who knows – the Seventies offers numerous fabulous musical destinations. So join us as we take a little tour.
Sun, 11 Jun 2023 - 55min - 45 - Simply the best
Aaah the hits keep coming, and we don’t mean of the musical kind. Sadly, the incredible Tina Turner, the Queen of Rock, has passed away. A powerhouse performer with a distinct rock vocal style, Tina managed to transition from one half of Seventies duo Ike and Tina Turner to forge an impressive solo career on her own terms, becoming one of the biggest and most loved stars of the 80s and beyond. So on this week’s show, we pay tribute to her stellar achievements by showcasing just some of the incredible music made by women in the Seventies.
Sun, 04 Jun 2023 - 55min - 44 - Get on the peace train
This week saw the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, so our show of course features tracks from the 1970s all about peace and love and an end to fighting. As we discover, songs about peace seem to fall mostly in the early part of the decade as artists continue to respond to the civil rights movement of the 1960s and the Vietnam war (the USA pulled out in 1973). Many of the songs featured on the show have become classics, continuing to remind us that when we have a course of action to choose, we should be guided always by peace and love. Right on.
Sun, 28 May 2023 - 55min - 43 - Desert Island Top 5
This week Marty and Venetia are cast away on a desert island. All we are allowed to bring along for entertainment is five albums each from the 1970s. For regular listeners to the show, the top five artists and albums we pick probably wont be too surprising. But their work is always worth playing again. We hope you enjoy, and maybe decide to come and join us on our little island retreat.
Sun, 21 May 2023 - 54min - 42 - Happy families
In honour of International Family Day, on this week’s show we’re playing tracks released by bands made up of family members. There were quite a few acts in the 70s, particularly those consisting of siblings, usually brothers, but sometimes sisters too. Some bands were short lived but others are still performing and recording to this day. Whatever the case, we’re glad these family members decided to pick up instruments and make great music together and then share it with the world.
Sun, 14 May 2023 - 55min - 41 - Starship Superstars
May the 4th be with you! In honour of the 4th of May, this week we decided to have a space themed show, playing songs to do with space, the planets and other galactic type things. Featuring solar powered guitars, women in the moon (called the moon), Saturn arising, and space rockets, the music this week will blast you into the stratosphere. So come join us among the spheres, and don’t forget your spacesuit!
Mon, 08 May 2023 - 56min - 40 - We want your money, honey!
Yes it’s the Radiothon show! Every year at about this time JOY asks our lovely listeners to dig into their pockets and send us some cash to help us fund another year of fabulous radio and podcasts. It costs almost $9000 a year to keep a one hour show like Living in the 70s on air, even with all the volunteers behind the microphones and behind the scenes making the magic happen. So if you love the show and love listening to the podcast – even if you’re listening to this after Radiothon has finished – consider making a donation or becoming a member. It’s easy – just hop on to joy.org.au and do it online or give us a call. Because together, we thrive.
Mon, 08 May 2023 - 55min - 39 - Dance, dance, dance
It’s International Dance Day! Possibly the organisers didn’t have disco top of mind, but of course it’s the first thing that occurs to us, here at Living in the 70s. Arguably the 70s’ greatest contribution to the world of dance, disco is designed to get your toes tapping and your hips swinging and make the dance floor irresistible – even if that dancefloor is your loungeroom. So get your boogie on and join us as we celebrate that infectious beat!
Sun, 23 Apr 2023 - 55min - 38 - Still going strong
Here at Living in the 70s we share with you music that was made half a century ago. Inevitably many of the artists whose work we love have already passed away or pass away while we publish these shows. Some however, are still going strong, performing and releasing fantastic work fifty years on. On today’s show we celebrate some of those artists and the music that made us fall in love with them.
Sun, 16 Apr 2023 - 55min - 37 - Happy Easter
It’s that time of year again, it’s the Easter long weekend when our thoughts turn to hot cross buns and returning from the dead. This week Marty and Venetia have decided to take a spiritual turn and resurrect some Seventies classics about all things divine. So put your hand in our hands and join us on the banks of a river somewhere in Babylon for a rejuvenating dunking in some fabulous 1970s music.
Sun, 09 Apr 2023 - 55min - 36 - Marty’s birthday mix!
A couple of weeks ago it was Venetia’s birthday and Marty chose the playlist. This week it’s Marty’s birthday and it’s Venetia’s turn to put together a mixtape of tracks that she thinks might be some of her cohost’s Seventies favourites. Has she done as good a job as Marty did? Will Marty like his birthday present? Let’s find out. Happy birthday Marty!
Sun, 02 Apr 2023 - 55min - 35 - Wet, wet, wet
It’s World Water Day – or is it International Wetlands Day? We’re not entirely sure. Either way it’s an excellent reason to play some Seventies tracks about water – rivers, oceans, tears, if it’s moist we’ll take it. So put on your togs and jump on in – the water is fine…
Sat, 25 Mar 2023 - 54min - 34 - Venetia’s birthday mix!
It’s Venetia’s birthday this week. And to help celebrate Marty has put together a mixtape filled with a selection of her favourite Seventies artists. There’s a bit of soul, a pinch of disco, some singer songwriter and a dash of new wave. What a lovely gift. Happy birthday Venetia!
Sun, 19 Mar 2023 - 55min - 33 - Through the decade down under
A couple of weeks ago we took a stroll through the 1970s, playing a track from each year. This week we’re doing the same thing, only we’re choosing tracks exclusively from Australian artists. Turns out, the 1970s were a bit mellow down under. Or perhaps we’re just in a mellow mood, winding down from a fabulous Pride season. It’s the after party chillax, Australian Seventies style…
Sun, 05 Mar 2023 - 57min - 32 - World Pride
Happy Pride everyone! To celebrate World Pride happening right here in Australia, this week we’re playing tracks from the Seventies by LGBTI artists. We’ve come a long way in the last 50 years. Still lots to do, but right now it’s time to party. So get on your glad rags and go out there and be authentically you!
Sun, 26 Feb 2023 - 55min - 31 - Through the decade
On this weeks show we are going to amble through the decade, playing a song for each year from 1970 to 1979. We can’t possibly hope to represent all of the diverse genres and styles of the whole of the Seventies. This is just a good selection – a little taste – of a song we happen to like from each year that we hope will appeal to all of you, our lovely listeners. What a treat!
Sun, 19 Feb 2023 - 54min - 30 - All Oz music hour
At least once every year – sometimes more often – we put together a show highlighting just some of the fantastic tracks released by Australian artists in the 1970s. Australia had a vibrant and interesting music scene with talented artists exploring a variety of genres. This show features some classic, well known numbers and some lesser known ones only released as singles or buried in the depths of an album. Altogether it’s a great Aussie mix.
Sat, 28 Jan 2023 - 55min - 29 - Gone in 2022
The past twelve months have been rough for Seventies music lovers, and it’s only likely to get rougher. It’s been 50 years since that wonderful decade for music and many of our favourite artists are now passing away with sad regularity. It’s seems impossible that the wildly energetic creators of that vibrant music that we love could be getting so on in years (and that we, also, could be aging) but it’s true. Every life reaches its end, even the lives of our musical heroes. Thankfully, their music lives on. This week we celebrate the fantastic legacy of some of those artists who died in 2022 (and a couple from early 2023). Vale. Thank you for the music.
Sat, 21 Jan 2023 - 55min - 28 - Songs from 1973
As is traditional on Living in the 70s, our first show of the new year looks back to songs released 50 years ago. And this year it’s 1973. Early in the decade still. Prime time for some great funk, some crossover country, a touch of glam rock and a pinch of pop. These tracks may be half a century old, but they’re still brilliant. Happy birthday 1973.
Sat, 14 Jan 2023 - 55min - 27 - Merry Christmas everybody!
Our Christmas present to you this year, our lovely listeners, is a carefully crafted playlist of Seventies Christmas classics. Today’s show will have you humming along while you light the candles, stir the gravy, stuff the bird and set the table. Or perhaps will be the perfect companion for your post lunch snooze on the couch amidst the piles of wrapping paper. However you listen, we wish you all a very merry holiday season, filled with love, laughter and, of course, good music.
We will be taking a two week break. We will be back for more Seventies fabulousness on January 14th. Thank you all so much for your support this year. Have a happy new year and see you in 2023!Sat, 24 Dec 2022 - 55min - 26 - Hits of 1972
As we lurch toward the end of 2022, it’s time to take a look back through the mists of time – a whole half a century – to songs that were number one hits 50 years ago. People had great taste in 1972. It was a surprisingly mellow year in the charts. Lots of heartfelt ballads. A sprinkling of glam rock. A pinch of soul. But altogether a pretty wonderful mix.
Sat, 17 Dec 2022 - 55min - 25 - Songbirds
This last week sadly saw the passing of Christine McVie, beautiful songwriter and singer and pivotal member of one of our favourite acts, Fleetwood Mac. One of her most loved tracks is ‘songbirds’. So in tribute, this week, we have chosen female artists from the Seventies who we think of when we think of songbirds. Vale Christine. May songbirds sing you to your rest.
Sun, 11 Dec 2022 - 55min - 24 - It’s finally Summer!
It felt like it would never get here – and it may still be a little sluggish – but Summer has finally arrived! And on this week’s show we’re celebrating by playing songs that get us in the mood for long balmy evening, days at the beach and just feeling the sun on our faces. Aaahh….
Sat, 03 Dec 2022 - 55min - 23 - Even more requests!
This is the final instalment of our listener request shows. Thank you all so much for taking over the driver’s seat – we’ve gone to some pretty quirky and fabulous destinations, and this week is no exception. Once again we visit some disco, skirt around folk, stopover in new wave and hang out in rock. It’s a grand tour!
Thu, 01 Dec 2022 - 55min - 22 - More requests!
We got such a great response to our call out for listener song requests, that this week we’re playing more! Once again it’s a fabulously eclectic mix of Seventies tracks – some classic, some cheeky, but all good.
Sat, 19 Nov 2022 - 55min - 21 - You asked and we listened!
We have some very engaged and dedicated listeners to our little radio show (and podcast) and we love it when you contact us and let us know what you would like to hear. This week we asked you to pick all of the songs for the show and you did a fabulous job. We like to think we know a lot now about 70s music, but we have have been pointed to some wonderful tracks and artists that we hadn’t heard – or played – before. Just goes to show that there is still plenty of material to explore from that rich decade of music.
Sat, 12 Nov 2022 - 55min - 20 - More Hall of Fame
On this weekend selected performers, producers and song writers will be formally inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for 2022. We congratulate all the artists, but in particular we applaud 70s luminaries Dolly Parton, Lionel Richie and Carly Simon who make it in this year. In recognition of this event, on today’s show we are playing tracks by artists from the lists of inductees to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Sat, 05 Nov 2022 - 55min - 19 - Monster Mash
Wooooooooo….. It’s All Hallows’ Eve and here at Living in the 70s we’re getting spooky. We’ve found some truly gruesome and horrifying tracks to set the mood. So let’s get supernatural and do the monster mash…
Sat, 29 Oct 2022 - 55min - 18 - Shout it out loud
Today is international CAPS LOCK DAY and we’re getting snippy, flipping the bird and shouting out loud here at Living in the 70s. We’re not angry, we’re just exclaiming vehemently.
Sat, 22 Oct 2022 - 55min - 17 - Songs of 1974
A couple of weeks ago, Marty shared some statistics from our three years of hosting Living in the 70s. Apparently we have neglected 1974 – so far we have payed fewer songs from 1974 than from any other year. We have no idea why. We have no biases we can detect. It seems a perfectly innocuous year. So in an effort to rectify this, and show 1974 some love, we decided to dedicate an entire show songs to from this year. Turns out, 1974 is pretty fine.
