- 16 - Lee Kuan Yew - Sage of Singapore
Lee Kuan Yew was the founder of modern-day Singapore. He took Singapore from third world to first in one generation. His candour in analysing other counties such as the UK, US & China is incredibly insightful.
So here is what you are in for the next 45 minutes of your life. I want to look at:
Who was Lee Kuan Yew? What was the back story to Singapore we see today? What were his principles and guiding philosophy of pragmatism and meritocracy? Considering Singapore famously had no real assets how does it now rival the US in GDP per capita? What did he think about the demise of the UK after WWII, can BREXIT learn from Singapore and the future of the United States. Given his position of respect by the Chinese politburo, what can he tell us about China? What are the criticisms of his authoritarian control of the state?Sun, 26 Apr 2020 - 47min - 15 - Lessons from history: Why is there a tension between freedom and equality?
In this podcast, I use Will & Ariel Durant's book Lessons from history to examine why there is a tension between freedom and equality.
"Nature smiles at the union of freedom and equality in our utopias. For freedom and equality are sworn and everlasting enemies, and when one prevails the other dies."
I look at examples such as Andrew Carnegie, Bill Gates, John D Rockefeller and Jeff Bezos and question are some people just better equipped to compete for scarce resources than others in a free market or is it due to hereditary privilege.
I question whether freedom in countries such as Australia, USA, UK and Singapore has to decline to ensure equality and examine if anyone has an elegant solution.
Tue, 14 Apr 2020 - 41min - 14 - Series 2 - 1 Short Blog on Stoic Tranquillity
I want to dive into the Roman Stoic’s and in particular why the believed tranquillity or peace of mind should be an ultimate goal.
First, we need an introduction into the Roman Stoics, second why the goal of tranquillity or peace of mind was deemed so important and finally, I think more importantly I want to share some of the techniques that the stoics practiced for peace of mind. Hopefully given the wild times that we are living in at the moment these tried and tested ancient techniques might be helpful to just one person out there.
Sat, 28 Mar 2020 - 16min - 13 - #13 Rami Weiss: Healthshare
I am currently going deep into how technology is impacting Healthcare. As part of that I am speaking to early-stage entrepreneurs in the initial staging of funding, but as part of my research, I came across Rami Weiss who is the CEO of a fully scaled up health tech business called Healthshare, which is building innovative products that improve access to health information and health practitioners. The conversation feels quite timely as we covered the debate over the Australian Governments design and execution of the My Health record, which has come under scrutiny from many including myself over concerns around how well client privacy will be protected. This for me is a real double-edged sword. On one hand, connecting patient data frees up time for practitioners and enables them to have a more holistic view of the patient, it also potentially opens up a viable opportunity for applying machine learning to look for solutions to disease. The downside, for example, would be my podiatrist being given automatic access to completely unrelated areas such as my sexual infection history would be a pretty sensitive one (Disclaimer I am as clean as a whistle I think!) Thanks again to Rami for taking time to speak to me and if anybody is listening who is working in the health tech space or believes they have a solution to a problem in health, do reach out on the socials I would love to chat more.
Mon, 04 Mar 2019 - 26min - 12 - #12 Paul Frasca: Sustainable Entrepreneur
One of the areas that I have thought a lot about over the years, is the financial sustainability of social ventures. I think it's fair to say that my track record on this is mixed. The positive intention has without doubt been there. For example, I started writing the outline for the business that became TVN in the foreword of the book by Mathew Bishop Philanthrocapitalism I bonded with TVN's co-founder Josh Ismin whilst at a Microsoft event in Atlanta where Blake Mycoskie founder of Tom's Shoes was the keynote speaker. In fact, the original business model for TVN had a 10% profit share baked into it, for investment in a social venture. Sadly we never managed to operationally align TVN and the social venture we identified. That did not stop me trying again, however, this time in a seed investment in Andable which was a digital marketplace that gave 10% of the sales transaction profit to Kiva, a microloans organisation that provides credit to small businesses in the developing world. Unfortunately, I know now more about the economics of a successful digital marketplace than I did in 2012 and sadly Andable is no longer around. So it was with these best intentions and a little bit of scar tissue that I got to sit down with today's guest Paul Frasca, CEO of Sustainable Salons. Paul is a serial entrepreneur who has been able to not only create an organisation that is sustainable in the re-use of waste sense of the word but has also built a social venture that is self-sustainable from a financial sense. Paul is a super interesting character and if in years to come scientists find the DNA that is linked to being an entrepreneur he would undeniably have it! We talk about the innovation and incubation stage of the startup and go deep into Paul's journey with Sustainable Salons before finishing with an exploration of some of the future use cases for how technology could build a brighter future. Hope you enjoy and thanks again to Paul Frasca.
Mon, 04 Mar 2019 - 1h 04min - 11 - #11 Josh Ismin: Partner in crime
It's June 30th 2017 and Josh Ismin and myself are at the end of a two-year earn-out for the acquisition of our company TVN, the digital video marketplace we started in my basement in Tamarama 7 years ago. All the vital signs of the company are great: Our revenue is pushing $45million, we are operating in 9 different countries in Asia Pacific, we have survived competition from Google and Facebook as well as a host of well funded US ad tech companies trying to squash us in every way you could imagine. All is well that ends well. Fast forward to the present day and I got to catch up with my old business partner Josh Ismin over a bottle of wine. I ask Josh for his take on the trials and tribulations of starting a company, scaling it and living to tell the tale. Any questions message me on any of my socials, Enjoy Peter
Mon, 04 Mar 2019 - 1h 16min - 10 - #10 Bronwyn Sheehan: How to take action
Let's be honest, there are lots of well-documented problems in the world and luckily there are also people in the world who see those problems and are driven to take massive action. On the podcast today we have one of those people, Bronwyn Sheehan founder and CEO of the Pyjama Foundation an organisation that promotes numeracy and literacy to children in the foster care system. I have got to know Bronwyn really well over the years as a board member of the Pyjama foundation and I continue to be blown away by her as a force of nature. Bronwyn has been voted Queensland Australian of the year and Telstra businesswomen of the year, for the work that she has done creating a difference to the lives of some of the societies most vulnerable children. Listening to Bronwyn for an hour will make you laugh, might also make you cry, but will show you how taking individual action can make the world more positive one step at a time.
Mon, 04 Mar 2019 - 55min - 9 - #9 Ben King: Country Director Google Thailand
What should western organisations consider when thinking about launching in Asian countries? What is it like to be a non-native speaker running Google in Thailand? Why is the digital economy in China accelerating so quickly? Where is Google headed in Machine Learning? How does a sporting career influence building high performing corporate teams? I discuss all this and more with my good friend Ben King. Ben is Country Director of Google Thailand. Ben and I first met at Microsoft in Australia and it has been awesome to watch his journey at Google in South East Asia. We start off with some productivity tricks that help Ben manage a pretty full on schedule, before discussing the role of sport in shaping his team culture at Google. I have found it fascinating to see how Ben is leveraging Google as a force for good in Thailand and how committed he has been to integrate himself in Thai culture. We discuss the importance of having a local market presence and the challenges of the fly in and fly out (FIFO) model for true long-term market penetration. Given Ben’s role at Google his insight into the advances in machine learning are super interesting and an area that most people in business today are thinking long and hard about. We delve into the evolution of the Chinese digital economy and who the players to watch out for who will keep it expanding. I think if you want insight into the role technology can play in society, true insight into getting market entry strategies correct in SEA and the shifting dynamics of regional powers you are in for a treat. Please feel free to reach out with any questions through any of my socials @peterostick.
Mon, 04 Mar 2019 - 1h 00min - 8 - #8 Charlotte Rose Hamlyn: An artist in love with science
How do you balance creative thinking whilst ensuring you have output? Can you apply the scientific method to art? What is the future of art in an ever more technological world? My guest this week Charlotte Rose Hamlyn, is a renaissance human, whose creative output across various platforms whilst pondering the scientific method would have made Leonardo smile. Charlotte is a published author with Penguin Random House, of the children's graphic novel Opposite Land, screenwriter of various kids TV shows including Beat Bugs, which is one of my all-time Netflix favourites, Host of Channel 7's TV show Get Arty. We jump right into the creative process that Charlotte goes through including a model for getting bad ideas out of the way called the 10 from 10. We discuss how to use the scientific method in the creation of art. As well as wide-ranging discussions on equality in the TV industry, the future of art and as always a view on the utopian or dystopian path ahead. I recommend checking out some of Charlotte's work at www.charlotterosehamlyn.com where you can find insightful how-to videos on how she created the graphic novel Opposite Land, some of her latest animated work for Netflix Motown Magic and lots of interactive content. Charlotte can also be found on Instagram @charlotterosehamlyn This episode will give you insight into the day to day process of one of Australia's leading creatives and might also make you giggle from time to time. I am personally in awe of the fact that Charlotte manages to be at the top of the game in so many areas. As with many of the guests that I have interviewed for the show, Charlotte is clearly very gifted but as you will hear, she is also incredibly dedicated to her craft, has episodes of self-doubt but is continually brave in putting herself and her work out there. Hope you enjoy!

Wed, 24 Oct 2018 - 45min - 5 - #5 Gary Gorrow - Clarity in a hectic world
Exploring human potential through the eyes of world-class leaders in technology, business, sport and health. On this week's show, we have my good friend, mentor and business partner Gary Gorrow. Gary is a leading Vedic meditation teacher, surfer, and general wise soul. He works with a host of celebrities, executives, sports teams. I first met Gary when my life from everything from my business, to my personal life was going to shit. In hindsight, Gary teaching me to meditate gave me not on only a daily release valve, but also gave me an awareness of the need for balance that I did not have before which has helped not only in business but as a husband and a father. The recording follows on from a couple of days we had spent on our land in glorious Byron Bay which we are currently developing into a wellness retreat. We covered everything from Gary's journey from fashion to a spiritual guide, to the ethics and potential use cases of Gene editing and precision healthcare. Listening to Gary is good for the soul, he helped change my life I would highly recommend it!
Wed, 03 Oct 2018 - 1h 26min - 4 - #4 Dan Brush & Bart Jellema X2M - Why they built a new crypto exchange
For me, the last 18 months following the development of Blockchain and Cryptocurrency has been a little bit of an emotional rollercoaster. I have gone from.... this changes everything, to just drive the UBER I don't want to buy into your ICO. Today we are hopefully passed peak hype and I am actively involved as an advisor in companies with blockchain at there core. So I was particularly intrigued when my legal counsel Dan Brush from when I sold my company TVN told me he was now COO and counsel to a crypto wallet and exchange XS2 here in Australia. His partner CEO and founder Bart Jellema has built and sold several companies including TJoos which was acquired by Internet Brands. The aims of this conversation were to understand the fundamental principals behind blockchain and cryptocurrency. It's pretty rare in this space that you get a combination of tech engineer/entrepreneur and legal counsel to explain what is really happening. I think you will enjoy this show if you - like me are still trying to claw back the underlying value of blockchain and cryptocurrency from the vapour and hype that surrounds the industry. Bart and Dan are both incredibly smart and the conversation was really enjoyable.

Sat, 15 Sep 2018 - 1h 19min - 2 - # 2 Bobby Walia Modern Golf
This episode is what it says on the tin and is for all the golfers out there in the constant search to get better. Bobby Walia is a certified instructor, who has played professionally on the sunshine tour, he's played the best golf courses in the world as the onboard instructor of the ship called The world and is an all-around great human and teacher. With more time on my hands these days I am a walking cliche "obsessed with golf" its hard, it's addictive and if you have never been addicted to it you will not be able to comprehend spending four and half hours chasing a ball around in various states of torture. I hear golf repeatedly described as an allegory for life's trials and tribulations. For someone like me who has spent a good amount of time trying to figure out how to control the mind and the impact it has on physiology, golf has an incredible appeal. If you are a golfer or have been considering golf you will get a lot out of this, for anyone else interested in the mental side of sport I think you would also enjoy.
