REMI. At-home. Home Run. Remote. Whatever you call it, it’s the live production workflow that’s reshaping the business. It's the act of taking camera and audio feeds from the venue and producing the event from a control room maybe hundreds of miles away in a control room in a broadcast facility.
At-home production has broadcasters and vendors rethinking their facilities, gear purchases, staffing, and everything in between. Depending on who you ask, it’s the greatest trend in the business or the worst.
Rather than discussing the technology making at-home production possible, on this episode of The SVG Podcast we will, instead, get the opinions of some of those working on the front bench of these shows. The true storytellers of the live sports industry.
Here's the panelists: - Keith D’Alessandro, NASCAR, Senior Coordinating Producer - Bill Herbstman, Director - Dan Maloney, Matrox Video, Technical Marketing Manager - Rick Seegull, Riedel, VP, System Consulting - Bob Whyley, Tennis Channel, SVP, Production, and Executive Producer
We discuss how using an at-home model changes the nature of the live show. What steps need to be taken to ensure the broadcast is not compromised? How they prepare their crews different for an at-home show versus a traditional on-site show. That and much more.

While many professional sports are returning to action in isolated bubble environments, Major League Baseball is continuing to host its games in the club's home ballparks. A wrinkle of all of this is that in-venue video teams are continuing to program a live videoboard show (with added artificial crowd noise) in these ballparks despite the fact that no fans are in attendance.
So what's that like? SVG's Associate Editor Kristian Hernandez joins Director of Digital Brandon Costa to discuss the common themes and the unique quirks of programming an in-stadium show in the COVID era. We're also joined on the program to chat specifics with Rob Weinheimer, Vice President, DBTV Productions & Game Operations for the Arizona Diamondbacks and Sam Henschen, Director, Game Day Experience for the Minnesota Twins.

Wed, 25 Mar 2020 - 1h 26min - 87 - 80 - Craig Barry, EVP/Chief Content Officer, Turner Sports
A segment of the sports video business that is growing increasingly more exciting and interesting is graphics. At Super Bowl LIV, for example, Fox Sports had viewers buzzing with a flashing new insert graphics package and score bug, while the NFL wowed audiences with its NFL 100 pregame ceremony that featured nearly seven minutes of augmented reality graphics.
However, some of the most impactful graphics enhancements don't necessarily have to explode off the screen. They can be subtle. Much like the new Virtual Shot Clock introduced this season for NBA games on TNT by Turner Sports.
WATCH A SAMPLE OF VIRTUAL SHOT CLOCK: youtu.be/UgyiqmevH-Q
We’re joined on The SVG Podcast by Craig Barry, Executive Vice President and Chief Content Officer for Turner Sports to discuss the Virtual Shot Clock project, which took more than a year to develop.
Craig shares how he and the network see this technology on the level of a 'Yellow 1st and Ten Line' for basketball and walks you through the work they did with the graphics technology leader Vizrt in order to make it all happen.

Wed, 11 Mar 2020 - 20min - 86 - 79 - Young Women In Sports TV Operations: An SVG Europe Women Panel
A persistent trend in the sports video operations business today is the challenge of finding and training the next generation of broadcast IT technologists, particularly engineers. This is especially true of finding women in those roles.
The same can be said of the broadcast industry in Europe. That was the focus of a panel discussion at the latest Networking Event hosted by SVG Europe Women. The discussion, which featured three engineers working in the field and three educators, addressed the measures that are being taken to guide more young women into STEM roles, the disparity between that desire and the educational prerequisites that deter or prevent women from going in that direction, and the value of learning on the job.
The educators: Polly Hickling, the course leader of the Media Technology Program at Solent University Southampton Susan Pratt, director of teaching and learning for the department of music and media, film and video production technology at the University of Surrey Dr. Ajaz Ali, course director of Digital Television Technology and Degree Apprenticeships at Ravensbourne
The engineers: Carys Hughes, design engineer, emerging technologies for Sky Sandy Isnard, solutions architect for Telstra Broadcast Services Ro-sheen McKenry, head of production technology at Timeline TV
This conversation was recorded on January 30 at the latest SVG Europe Women networking event held in partnership BT Sport and Timeline Television at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London. Your moderator is BT Sport announcer Sarah Elgan.

Wed, 12 Feb 2020 - 48min - 84 - 77 - Sports Betting: What It Means For The Sports Media Industry
It's Super Bowl Week and if forecasters are correct, Super Bowl LIV promises to be the most gambled on Super Bowl in history. According to analysts at PlayUSA.com, this year's big game is expected to haul in approximately $400 million dollars in total legal bets.
But the Super Bowl is just the tip of the iceberg. If 2019 was a year of states, leagues, and sports books positioning their chips, 2020 is poised to be a year when sports betting truly breaks out. And its inevitably having a major impact on live sports video production.
That’s the topic we will dive into on the show today with Steve Byrd, Head of Global Strategic Partnerships with Sportradar; Mike Morrison, VP of Business Development at ESPN; and Damon Phillips, SVP and General Manager of NBC Sports Washington.
All three will share their own experiences in the growing space and tackle important questions like how are broadcasters approaching gambling from a programming standpoint? Do RSNs have a built in advantage? And how much quicker will more states come on board and continue to grow the pie?
This conversation comes from the stage of the SVG Summit and was recorded on December 17, 2019. Here to take you through is your moderator for this talk: our Chief Editor Jason Dachman.
