- 85 - Going on Pause - Dan Barker
This is going to be a fairly quick one because I've decided to put the podcast on pause for the time being. Press play to find out why.
On that note, let me give you some great news about the new “Thriving Three Counties Mastermind Community” that we've launched this year.
What is it all about? Thanks for asking!
Well in short, we're a group of generous entrepreneurs based in the three counties committed to helping each other learn, grow and develop so we can all live rich, happy and fulfilled lives.
So what makes it different to your typical networking group?
It’s not about trying to meet people and get business. It’s more than that. Together this exclusive group will support each other and help each other to learn and grow. The mastermind format is something that I’ve been a part of for many, many years and I think this one has got huge potential to become ‘the group’ in the three counties that everyone wants to be a part of in the future.
We are currently taking on founding members, so if you'd like to be part of it, then please do get in touch – see link below, or email me at danbarkerstudios.com and we'll get information across to you soon. - Dan

Wed, 01 Mar 2023 - 03min - 84 - Rather Inventive Marketing Interview - Ben Kinnaird
This week we're going to turn the tables. I was very lucky to be invited onto a podcast with Ben Kinnaird, who runs a company called Rather Inventive Marketing. It's quite cool what he does. He essentially runs a sort of private podcast, which he puts out to his club members, and his club members are his clients.
We had a lot of fun, and covered a lot of subjects from my background to what we do now.
Hope you enjoy!
KEEP READING IF YOU WANT TO FIND OUT ABOUT SOMETHING THAT I'M REALLY EXCITED ABOUT.
I want to tell you about the new “Thriving Three Counties Mastermind Community” that we've launched this year.

Just a few of my thoughts on the whole work life balance thing that partly came about from one of our mastermind community meet ups. If you're interested in the group then give me a shout and I'll give you all the details.
Remember, you can find links to all the episodes and show notes over at www.danbarkerstudios.com. If you've enjoyed today's show, please leave us a review. It helps other people find the show and connect with people in the region.

Wed, 15 Feb 2023 - 12min - 82 - Goal Setting - Dan Barker
81 - Goal Setting
It's that time of year when we think about what’s important to us and what we want to achieve. Most of us try to set goals, but are we achieving them? Drawing from personal experience and that of mentors, Dan believes there are ways to accomplish goals which are more effective than others.
As we launch into the new year, it’s good to assess what works and what doesn’t, in order to help us focus on what we should be doing with fresh clarity. In this episode, of Thriving Three Counties, Dan touches on some advice from Gary Keller’s book ‘The One Thing’. Dan also leaves us with some practical advice that has worked for him, to help achieve our goals.
We hope this has been helpful. We are all on this journey together and it would be good to hear from you. What are your goals and how are they going?

Wed, 01 Feb 2023 - 08min - 80 - Spotting Opportunities To Make A Difference - Jon Johnson
If you've heard the story of me finding my niche in photography a number of years ago, you'll have heard about today's guest, Jon Johnson already. While battling myself, trying to make the photography business work so I could leave my day job, I decided to ask on LinkedIn what struggles people had had when working with commercial photographers.
Jon generously answered and even agreed to chat on the phone to talk me through his experiences. His response that day led me to pursuing a niche in photography and now video, which had a dramatic impact on my business and ability to succeed.
Now, 4 or 5 years later, we've become good friends and having heard his story, I understand that this generous act of giving his time to me that day is something that comes naturally and is repeated often.
Jon is an entrepreneur at heart, having set up his first business aged 16.
Brought up on a family farm he forged his path in agricultural consultancy and agronomy. His passion for the development of people led to the successful Education Training Centre for young people developed in 2009, which came about due to another one of his generous acts - this time trying to understand and help a young person who was causing trouble on the street outside his house.
Jon has also undertaken property development projects and engaged in politics at local and national levels whilst developing a consultancy business working with a wide range of sectors.
In 2015 Jon founded his current business Mountain Perspective, blending business support and the outdoor environment. Today Mountain Perspective fulfils a range of commercial contracts. He also works with several charities and social enterprises, and is an Enterprise Advisor for Hereford and Ludlow and North Shropshire College, and an Advisor for Young Enterprise.
Jon holds a BSc in Business Management, Teacher training qualification, and is currently studying for his master’s in psychology.

Wed, 11 Jan 2023 - 56min - 78 - Zero to Xero Hero - Ian Jarvis
I've had a pleasure of watching Ian Jarvis transition from employed to running his own accountancy business, as we both took the plunge around a similar time, in 2018.
Since then, Ian's client roster has grown at an incredible rate - and for full disclosure, I'm one of them!
Ian is always been ahead of the curve when it comes to technology and ways of doing business - jumping on Zoom calls with his clients, long before most people had heard of it, working solely on a fixed monthly direct debit basis with his clients and fully embracing cloud based accounting software while others were still on Excel.
Ian is a personable guy with a dry sense of humour, who as far as I can see, simply loves helping people overcome their accounting problems.

Fri, 16 Dec 2022 - 48min - 77 - How To Light Up Your Life - Simon Wallis Smith
After falling out of love with his career in IT, the work, the commute and the drain on family life, Simon Wallis Smith decided to take the plunge and buy an existing business in a completely different sector - antique lighting.
Armed with no experience in retail or lighting, but the motivation to make positive changes in his life for himself and his family, he took on a bricks and mortar business with a handful of employees and got to work.
He's since grown the business into one of the most sought after lighting specialists in the country, with a range of contemporary lighting designed by him and his team, as well as a thriving antique lighting restoration and sales department.
They upgraded their premises in Ross-on-Wye in 2020, moving into a stunning showroom, designed and kitted out from scratch, and have recently opened a London showroom in Clerkenwell.

Dan Cooke is an engineer with a passion and skill in business, a combination which exists, but in my experience can be rare.
We've been working with him and the business he manages for a couple of years now and in that time I've watched him help grow the business through hard work, enthusiasm, dedication, a few all-nighters and a commitment to detail that'll leave most of us weeping in the corner!
He grew up on a farm in rural Herefordshire and has held several positions at prestigious engineering companies over the years.
His mother's accounting skills have rubbed off on him and his career has moved more towards the business side of things recently, where he's been able to combine his love of engineering with the running of the business.

Fri, 29 Oct 2021 - 31min - 45 - Passion for People & Leadership - Lucy Barkas (live)
Lucy says she was the archetypal good girl, and followed the traditional path – head girl, uni, job, married, kids, career – all ticked off the list by the time she was 30. She was living the dream, except it wasn’t bliss, nor a nightmare.
She felt like she was coasting.
By 35 she was divorced, left her job, sold her house and started again, and that’s when, she says, she started living.
She now works with Leaders and their teams to build organisations they are proud of.
She's an author, Podcast host and regular BBC Radio contributor, and her clients include private clients all the way up to international conglomerates.
Her initial curiosity was why do people behave the way they do and this led her to discover what shapes a leader, teams and high performance.

Fri, 24 Sep 2021 - 1h 01min - 40 - Creating Something Special - Harriet Williams
After finishing a degree in teaching, and travelling, she thought she would help her mum and dad promote the gin made by them and another farming family here in Herefordshire.
Two years later she’s still helping and loving every minute. Penrhos Spirits was born from a desire to utilise everything the farm has to offer. For many years the founders, Charlie and Dickie had felt compelled to use the fruit that wasn’t quite perfect enough for the supermarket.
So, a few years ago on a sunny Spring morning Charlie was inspired by the cherry blossom and how he could use it to make something special. Their award-winning range now includes 3 gins, 1 liqueur, a non-alcoholic raspberry spirit and a honey spiced rum.

Fri, 17 Sep 2021 - 50min - 39 - Helping Others Achieve Success - Stuart Houghton
Stuart owned and ran a gift business in Ledbury for around thirty years, which in the 1990’s was turning over £3.5 million a year.
Some of that success was due to the fact he designed a product that sold 8.5 million units and really helped establish the company.
He says that in spite of everything, he was guilty of working in the business and not on the business.
The business was sold in the early 2000s and he went “back” to becoming a studio potter.
After handing the pottery business to a young potter who had worked with him for a few years in 2016, he now makes furniture and guitars, going to a luthier and a furniture maker to hone his skills.
He’s also my landlord here at the studio and I’m very lucky to count him as a friend and mentor, as he’s been extremely supportive to me over the last 5 years as I’ve tried to build my business and change careers.

She’s been able to share this with her community in Malvern by making real bread accessible, and has found it to be a wonderful experience.

Fri, 16 Jul 2021 - 47min - 30 - Successfully Enjoying Business And Life - Lee Martin
He runs multiple businesses, and from what I’ve seen – does an incredible job of it, clearly enjoying what he does and inspiring those around him.
Having started out with a Subway store in Cheltenham, he quickly grew to two stores, but found having a franchise required too much of a regimented formula. He learnt a lot and decided to start his own company, Pig on the Hill, an outdoor catering company – pigonthehill.net
As well as running this and 4 pubs in the area, he also runs the festival, Lakefest - a 15,000 capacity, 4 day event – with headliners this year including Tom Jones and Razorlight– lakesfest.co.uk
He’s an incredibly community minded businessman, running charity events, encouraging up and coming musicians, amongst other things.
In-work and future plans include a Chinese Restaurant in Cheltenham, a London Taxi to transport locals around the Bredon, Kemerton, Beckford areas, as well as keeping his Cheltenham Football passion going by taking on the official catering at the club!
I have a feeling I’ve only scratched the surface in terms of what he gets up to and I’m excited to find out more.

Fri, 05 Mar 2021 - 59min - 11 - Make it Easy for the Customer - Luke Conod
It all started when Luke was 11, growing and selling marigolds from the boot of his Dad's car. That gave him a taste for working for himself and all the highs and lows, challenges and victories, risks and rewards that it entailed.
With the help of his Mother, Father and sister, Luke opened his first shop in Hereford in 2001.
Luke told me before the interview: "How I got here involves 3am starts and the 4am finishes, the deals and the high points but also the lows and the sticky situations and how, with the unstinting help of my family, friends and colleagues I got out of them!"
"However, ask anyone who works for themselves and they will tell you that the high points outweigh the low points 100 to 1."

Fri, 26 Feb 2021 - 45min - 10 - Orchestrating Communications - Elizabeth Laidler
A classical musician by training, Elizabeth studied flute and piano at Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and then Trinity Laban, London, where an inspirational ‘Business For Musicians’ course ultimately proved more interesting than her daily diet of musicology, theory and historical performance practice.
She established Worcester-based Encore Communications in 2009, growing the business into a team of experienced, marketing professionals offering a full range of marketing communications services.
Today, Elizabeth is responsible for the day-to-day running of the business, overseeing all Encore Communications’ activity and remaining ‘hands-on’ with several accounts, delivering integrated media relations, social media, digital marketing, crisis communications and strategy work for clients.
Nominated for the Chartered Institute of Public Relation’s Outstanding Young Communicator (UK) award in 2006, Elizabeth is a graduate of Common Purpose’s Meridian course for senior leaders, a CIM-qualified marketer, member of the Public Relations Consultancy Association, and holds the CIPR’s Professional PR Diploma.
A passionate advocate of agile working for all, she is Mum to two young children and has more than her fair share of working parent stories - probably best saved for Mummy blogs - having returned to support clients at a key exhibition just six weeks after her eldest was born.
Away from the office, Liz is a keen sports fan, having competed nationally in gymnastics and trampolining in her youth. She holds a season ticket at West Bromwich Albion, and also enjoys following cricket, tennis, athletics, rugby etc. In her spare time, she can usually be found ferrying her kids around to various classes and dreaming of the day she can finally go travelling and see the world.
