Sat, 09 Nov 2024 - 16min - 189 - Ancient Wayves River and Hiking Adventures with Louis Williams in Utah
Today on Travel Talk we are travelling to Southeast Utah to meet Louis Williams the owner of Ancient Wayves River and Hiking Adventures
Louis is a member of the Diné Nation and was raised in the town of Kayenta, Arizona near Monument Valley. Currently, he lives in Blanding, Utah with his wife Tanya and son, Kaleb. Louis loves nature and that love was inherited from his family roots. Louis learned the importance of land preservation and resource conservation through his heritage teachings and upbringing on the Dine reservation. This love for nature was enhanced during his studies at the University of New Mexico where he studied Earth Science which included various subjects focused on geology. He began sharing the beauty of the land and cultures when he started guiding full-time on the San Juan River. He guided educational tours for Wild Rivers Expeditions starting in 2012 and eventually established his own company called Ancient Wayves River and Hiking Adventures. Louis and his native crew of guides do their best to educate visitors about the importance of protecting this landscape’s resources, inhabitants, native vegetation and cultural history.
Louis has a deep passion for protecting the longevity of Mother Earth and the local cultures. He is involved with BEP through his training as a Visit With Respect Ambassador and archaeological site steward. Louis is often guiding tours in the Bear’s Ears region where he gets a chance to share knowledge about the archaeology, wildlife, geology, water sources, local history and existing cultures of the region.
Ancient Wayves, based near the Four Corners region, provides guided hiking tours throughout the Northern Navajo Nation and the Bears Ears region. These tours are available to the local, domestic, and international community. Since the launch of Ancient Wayves in February 2020, the demand for his unique Native American tours has been high despite opening as the COVID-19 pandemic closed down national and tribal parks, halting international travel. The grit and hustle of Louis are apparent as he tirelessly works with Meghan McFall to obtain training. With sheer determination, he believes in his mission to preserve the cultures and share the environmental and geological history of the region.

Sat, 26 Oct 2024 - 07min - 188 - Swiss Bliss with Fran Lambert
On Travel Talk today it's time for some Swiss Bliss with our special guest, Fran Lambert Head of Media & Communications UK & Ireland for Swiss Tourism - Ed has had a love affair with Switzerland since travelling there on his first ever trip outside of Ireland at just 14 years old - It was an amazing school tour that included Rome, the Vatican, Switzerland, (Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald) Monaco, Monte Carlo, Antibes, Paris and Rouen - His school, Presentation Brothers College in Cork even had a private audience with Pope John Paul II in the Vatican Gardens.... when asked what was the highlight of the trip by their Principal Brother Jerome Kelly, all the boys said the same.... The Glacier and Mountains in Switzerland Brother Jerome.... and what about meeting the Pope boys?? Oh yes, that was great as well...... Today Fran updates us on some great new products and trains and some amazing experiences to enjoy in Switzerland.
The Jungfrau-massif is a gigantic mountain wall of Alpine rock high above the Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald valleys in Switzerland. Sat, 19 Oct 2024 - 07min - 187 - Discovering Ireland's Dinkiest Country House in the Orchard County - Armagh
What could be better than a break at harvest time in the Orchard County of Armagh? Newforge House has been in the Mathers family for six generations with an uninterrupted family history. The current owners, John and his wife Louise, decided to try their hand at the hospitality biz 19 years ago. John is a fully trained Chef and Louise looks after all the administration and marketing, although her scones and biscuits are up there with the best and those sumptuous desserts..... It took the couple two years of hard work to make their dreams come true and the result is an adorable Country House with a delectable Dining Room. This is the Dinkiest Country House in Ireland and the food is incredible. This was my second stay here and I can't wait to return again. Newforge House lends itself to Autumn and Winter breaks and it is a member of Ireland's Blue Book. John has also an impressive Gin menu and some amazing wines to pair with that delicious fare. www.newforgehouse.com

Halcyon, a hotel in Cherry Creek: A Beacon of Boutique Hospitality
It was terrific to be back in Denver on the new direct flight from Dublin with Aer Lingus. Ed enjoyed a wonderful stay at the Halcyon Hotel in Cherry Creek and chatted with General Manager, McClinton Heil and he started their chat by congratulating Clinton on being awarded the 2024 Best Boutique Hotel General Manager by BLLA!
Hospitality runs in McClinton Heil's blood and this was more than evident during my delightful stay at the Halcyon Hotel Cherry Creek Located in the vibrant Cherry Creek neighbourhood of Denver, the Halcyon features over 150 elegantly designed guest rooms and suites, each tastefully curated to blend luxury with comfort.
At the helm of this well run establishment is McClinton Heil, whose leadership has propelled Halcyon to the top of TripAdvisor rankings and has also earned him the prestigious title of Best Boutique Hotel General Manager at the 2024 BLLA Awards. It was a pleasure to talk with McClinton to discuss his innovative strategies, the essence of Halcyon’s brand, and what this award means for him and his team. This hotel has so many lovely touches such as the the complimentary coffee and breakfast pastries and muffins, complimentary water and welcome drinks on arrival for guests and a great happy hour in the FABULOUS Local Jones Bar
McClinton Heil, GM at the Halcyon
From their very welcoming Kitchen Counter, (a cool take on the reception area) where you’ll check in and grab a coffee or glass of wine, to their exceptional Gear Garage and Rooftop Pool Deck—Halcyon is unhooked from the ordinary in so many ways and that's what you will love about staying there. I spent some truly "Halcyon Days" at the Halcyon and I really can't wait to get back there again.

Sat, 27 Apr 2024 - 07min - 174 - Back to Meet Boston
When I first arrived in the city 11 years ago, I discovered a place full of history and style, and I fell in love with it right away. Boston is one of the oldest cities in the US. With its red-brick buildings, brownstones and those prestigious universities, the city's culture and architecture are reminiscent of those of an English town. The streets are narrow and compact, which makes it an excellent city to walk around. Follow, for example, the red line painted on the footpaths of the meandering Freedom Trail, which will lead you to 16 historical sites over the course of a few hours, encompassing two and a half centuries of the US's most significant past. It was terrific to be here for St. Patrick's Day this year and to meet Dave O' Donnell from meet Boston and Steve Johnston, the GM of the elegant Boston Harbour Hotel where I had the pleasure of staying for 4 nights.
I enjoyed watching the Boston Celtics win a great basketball game and loved my return visit to Fenway Park. The John F Kennedy Library and Museum is a must see as is the famous Cheers Pub, where everyone knows your name. Boston is a great city for food lovers, sports fans and culture vultures. Quincy Market is great for clam chowder and ChinaTown is also excellent for authentic Chinese Food, Jackie Church does a terrific Tour here. View Boston in the Prudential Building also gives you amazing 360 degree views of the city. Of course the city is awash with the best Irish Bars on the planet aside from the old sod of course and food to match. Also great sessions at the Black Rose which was near my hotel. We flew over with Aer Lingus who fly twice a week from €190 and the Silver Line free bus SL1 dropped us off five minutes walk form the hotel. It goes from Logan airport to South Station. I also took the Amtrak from South Station to Mystic Connecticut when we departed Boston (1hr 40 mins) and that was stunning.
There are several beautiful parks in the city. Swan boats are a highlight at Boston Common, near the historic Beacon Hill neighbourhood; while south of the city are the Arnold Arboretum and Jamaica Pond, which is good for a long walk, especially in spring and fall, with its cherry blossoms and changing leaf colours.
If you have time, take a trip to the north shore beaches (Crane Beach or Plum Island), or to Cape Cod and its islands – Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. Summer is great there for good weather but you can also go off-season, in spring or fall, and you might have the sandy beaches and parks to yourself. I for one can't wait to return to Boston again soon, it's the kind of city that you just keep going back to. As Stephen Johnston told me - "I came here for 2 years Ed and I'm still here 15 years later" Say no more....
You can listen back to my chat with Stephen, Dave and Jackie Church by clicking here - Listen Back to The Sunday Show from Boston
A Huge thanks to Tony Lane from Visit USA who helped to put my fantastic trip together.

Sat, 06 Apr 2024 - 12min - 173 - A local's Guide to Miami
People come to Miami just to gaze at it. There’s absolutely no shortage of eye candy, from the art deco facades of South Beach to the colourful murals of the design area and of course the natural beauty of the Florida Keys and the everglades. Not forgetting of course the crystal clear blue warm waters of the Atlantic lapping at your feet. We stayed at the Hilton Cabana Miami Beach which has it's own private beach and two pools and was a terrific location - described as a Beachfront resort on Millionaire's Row no less!
Hilton Cabana Miami Beach Resort
Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, with direct access to the beach and the nine-mile Miami Beachwalk. Lincoln Road’s shopping and dining and Miami Beach Convention Center are within four miles. Features include two ocean-view outdoor pools, poolside cabanas, and your own private beach. Enjoy complimentary bike rentals and there's a cool bar with beach service. Thanks to the Latin American culture and cuisine that courses through its veins, Miami pulses with a vibrancy like no other city in North America. Whether you’re a night owl or an early bird, it's all here on offer for you and the family. What really matters is that you’re open to soaking in the vibe, ready for your senses to be stoked and your mood to be calm. It was wonderful to meet Sarah Kavanagh the Consul General to Ireland for Miami and Florida on my travels. Sarah gave me some top tips which were spot on and told me where to find the best Cuban Coffee in town.
Lunch at the Biltmore in Coral Gables was a highlight as was Harry Clarke's Geneva Window at the wonderful Wolfsonian Museum. We flew on the direct flight with Aer Lingus to Miami which returns in September for the winter season again. I loved the new Brightline Train which runs from Orlando to Miami and is just amazing. I took it from Fort Lauderdale to Miami which was just 35 minutes.

Sat, 20 Apr 2024 - 10min - 172 - Discover What Makes Fort Lauderdale the “Venice of America”
In this week's Travel Talk Ed chatted with Tracy Vaughan from Visit Lauderdale - SVP for Global Trade Development - “Venice of America” is more than a humble-brag on Fort Lauderdale’s official city seal. It is this destination’s world-famous sobriquet, a nickname based on the 300 miles of inland waterways that run through Greater Fort Lauderdale, with about 165 of those miles in the city of Fort Lauderdale itself.
When locals and visitors call this tropical destination the Venice of America, it’s because these winding ribbons of waterways aren’t just for show. The extra bragging rights come from how Greater Fort Lauderdale makes good use of them, cultivating a water-lover’s lifestyle that you can enjoy year-round under the warm Florida sunshine.
Sat, 13 Apr 2024 - 15min - 171 - This is Basel
Basel, Switzerland, is a place of exciting contrasts. A city with historical buildings next to modern architecture. Where a young and dynamic art scene exists alongside world-renowned museums. Cosmopolitan ambience here, lively traditions there. You just have to experience Basel for yourself. Basel has always been connected to European culture and, indeed, European history to a far greater extent than the rest of Switzerland, thanks to the Rhine that wends its powerful way through its middle. Travel Talk met Isidora Rudolph from This is Baselwho told Ed about all the wonderful things that this interesting city has to offer.
Ryanairflies daily to Basel from just €19.99 each way.

With their themed collections, the museums have something for every taste, and many have reputations that stretch far beyond the Swiss border. On top of that, there are countless galleries scattered throughout the city.
The passion for art was already firmly rooted in the city on the Rhine in 1967, the year of the Picasso miracle, and recently culminated in the magnificent new extension to the Kunstmuseum. The Kunstmuseum Basel, whose history dates back to 1661, is one of the world’s very first museums. Its collection includes many major works of art from the last 700 years. Wandering through the halls, you will discover a veritable “Who’s Who” of classical modernism, from Pablo Picasso to Henri Matisse and Joan Miró to Paul Klee. Small wonder, then, that London’s The Times named the museum the fifth best in the world in 2013.

Sat, 24 Feb 2024 - 09min - 166 - Hilton Frankfurt City Centre Celebrates its 25th Anniversary
As a travel journalist with a large penchant for Germany, I recently found myself back in one of my all-time favourite cities there—Frankfurt. This vibrant metropolis, often affectionately referred to as Mainhattan due to its skyline reminiscent of Manhattan in New York City, never fails to captivate me with its unique blend of modernity and rich history. I always opt to stay at the Hilton Frankfurt Centre, a luxurious haven in the heart of the city that happens to be celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.
My go-to choice, the Hilton Frankfurt Centre, has become a home away from home for me over the years. The hotel's commitment to excellence, coupled with its prime location, has always made it the ideal base for my explorations. To mark its quarter-century milestone, I had the pleasure of sitting down with the affable General Manager, Marc Snijders, a dear friend and steward of this special establishment.
Reminiscing about the hotel's journey, Marc shared insights into the Hilton Frankfurt Centre's evolution over the past 25 years. From its inception, the hotel has been a beacon of hospitality, welcoming guests from around the globe with its impeccable service and luxurious amenities. Marc's passion for ensuring guests have a memorable experience was palpable as he recounted stories of the hotel's growth and the countless people that he has welcomed over the years.
Our conversation naturally transitioned to the city itself, and Marc, being a Frankfurt enthusiast like myself, eagerly delved into the best things to see and do in Mainhattan. Frankfurt's skyline, dominated by sleek skyscrapers, is a testament to its status as a global financial hub. Yet, beyond the glass and steel, the city boasts a rich cultural tapestry.
One highlight that Marc recommended again was the iconic Römer, Frankfurt's historic city hall. Nestled in the heart of the Altstadt (Old Town), the Römer's medieval architecture and the surrounding cobblestone streets provide a charming contrast to the modernity just a stone's throw away. Strolling through this area, one can't help but feel the echoes of centuries past. Many European cities have spent decades carefully reconstructing historic buildings destroyed during the First and Second World Wars, but only Frankfurt has bothered to recreate an entire district as it was at the turn of the last century.
The DomRömer Quarter is Frankfurt's ‘new’ old town, spread across 7,000 square metres between Cathedral Square and the medieval Römer building that was more than 90 percent destroyed during the wars. The development opened in May 2018 and includes 20 new buildings and 15 replicas, including the Stadthaus community and conference centre. Expect to find thriving cafés, shops and a handful of decent museums.
For art enthusiasts, Marc recommended the Städel Museum, a cultural gem housing a vast collection of European masterpieces spanning seven centuries. From Renaissance classics to contemporary works, the museum offers a visual journey through art history.
Of course, no visit to Frankfurt is complete without indulging in its culinary delights. Marc enthusiastically suggested a visit to Kleinmarkthalle, a bustling market where locals and visitors alike converge to savor a diverse array of fresh produce, artisanal cheeses, and mouthwatering delicacies. It's a sensory experience that encapsulates the city's gastronomic diversity. The 1,500-square-metre Kleinmarkthalle, where nearly 160 market stalls flog local food, flowers and other produce is a must do. From cured meats and wine to honey, dried fruit, nuts, handmade pasta and cheese, just about every craving is catered for. As well as regional delicacies, you’ll find imports from all over Europe and beyond. Don’t miss the terrace bursting with flower boxes on the second level – the small family-owned plonk shop serves wines that pair very well with the food bought downstairs.
Discover the best of Frankfurt café culture on the picturesque upper Berger Straße. On Wednesdays and Saturdays, a weekly farmers’ market is held near the Bornheim Mitte metro station, between the old clock tower (Uhrtürmchen) and Saalburgstraße. Pass that and head north, away from the city centre, to the dozens of restaurants and bars that offer outside seating at the first suggestion of spring in the air. The half-timbered buildings are all original and date from the 1600s. When the sun sets, the street glows with candles and lanterns. While Berger Straße is an excellent destination for a reliable German meal, you could also try Spaghetti-Eis – vanilla ice cream squeezed into spaghetti-like noodles, served with strawberry sauce – from one of many nearby ice cream parlours.
Beer? Sorry, not the libation of choice in Frankfurt. Apfelwein (apple wine), a light and tart drink of fermented apples, is the state beverage, and you can combine it with a tour of the city’s major sights on the weird and wonderful Ebbelwei-Express. Set to a boisterous soundtrack of German drinking music, this vintage tram stops at 29 landmarks in a round-trip tour lasting approximately one hour – whew! Luckily, the ticket is valid all day, so you can get off and on as much as you’d like and take the tour at your own pace. Downloading the accompanying podcast (there’s no guide onboard) will give you an overview of the monuments and memorable sights along the way. A bottle of apple wine and a bag of pretzels is included in the ticket price.
Back at the Hilton Frankfurt Centre, the celebration of its 25th anniversary was in full swing. The hotel had curated special experiences for guests, including exclusive dining events and spa packages. It was a testament to the Hilton's commitment to creating lasting memories for its patrons. The tradition of the Champagne and Lobster brunch is a sumptuous event not to be missed and there are regular dates to book for this up to May 2024

Frankfurt's Home-Brewed Beer Scene
No visit to Frankfurt is complete without tasting its home-brewed beer. Many residents testify that Frankfurt’s beers exemplify the spirit of the city. These are the 5 best breweries you absolutely have to visit.
BrauStil
Located north of Innistrad, BrauStil offers an amazing array of craft beer that’ll make even a non-drinker convert. It has a cozy interior and a delightful garden, in which you can subject your taste buds to a blissful tasting experience of amazing beer and fresh food. The service epitomises the city’s welcoming nature, whether you are going alone or with company
Alt-Oberurseler Brauhaus
Alt Oberurseler Brauhaus is a brewery located in the heart of Oberurseler, some 25km away from Frankfurt’s Innistrad. It offers the complete Octoberfest experience with large meal portions and amazing beer. If you love pork, order Schweinshaxe, and Orscheln-Maibock – you’ll be amazed.
It features large inside area and a terrace, which offers that specific ‘German Pub’ experience.
Brauereigasthof “Zur Mainkur”
One of the best inn-breweries in Frankfurt, it is located on the eastern edge of the city, on the northern bank of Main. It has a long history and the lack of electronic distractions like wireless and TV will help you enjoy its hearty portions and delightful homebrewed beer. The meat is cooked to perfection, and Bier-Hannes Mai-Bock is truly an amazing beer to go along with it. Additionally, once you are done with the meal, you can take a walk on the bank of Main River and enjoy the scenery.
If you wish to experience the local way of life, this inn is ‘a must’.
Schöfferhofer Weizenbier
Schöfferhofer Weizenbier is world-renowned brewery located in southern Frankfurt. It exports beer all across the world, and every restaurant in the city offers its wide variety of beers. From fruit scented to dark and heavy, Schöfferhofer Weizenbier has something for every beer lover.
Moreover, Schöfferhofer Kristallweizen is probably the most delicious light-golden beer you will ever taste. If you prefer dark beer, Schöfferhofer Dunkles Hefeweizen is the right choice for you.
Binding-Brauerei
Binding-Brauerei is located just north of Schöfferhofer Weizenbier in southern Frankfurt, and offers a wide variety of high-quality beers for every beer lover. Binding supplies the German and European markets with world-class Frankfurt beer. In Binding-Brauerei you can learn about their brewing process and sample their beers.
The staff is friendly and engaging. BBK Märzen is a great
tasting amber-colored seasonal beer which offers a unique tasting experience.
Clausthaler
Dry Hopped and Clausthaler Golden Amber are a very food choice if you prefer
low-alcoholic beers. However, if you want to taste the hard stuff, Kutscher Alt is an amazing chestnut-brown beer, with a bite!
In Summary
For me I must say that Frankfurt’s breweries are definitely among the best in the world!
Frankfurt Card
The Frankfurt Card offers free travel on all public transport within the Frankfurt city limits (zone 50) including Frankfurt International Airport (FRA; zone 5090). This travelcard is available for one or two days and offers up to 50 % discount on city tours, museum admissions and further attractions.

DISCOVERING ANCIENT EGYPT WITH SEVEN UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITES
On Travel Talk today Ed chat's with Robbie about the amazing variety of holidays available to Egypt. EgyptAirflies direct 4 times a week rom Dublin to Cairo. Egypt is home to seven spectacular UNESCO World Heritage Sites, where visitors can immerse themselves in ancient cultural legacy protected throughout the ages. Each location has several important structures and features to discover, guaranteeing a breathtaking experience and memories to cherish for a lifetime
Historic Cairo
Founded in the 10th century and flanked by the modern architecture of contemporary Cairo, this ancient Islamic city is brimming with stunning mosques, madrasas (Islam-centered schools), hammams (baths), and fountains. It also includes an array of houses and wekalas.
Ancient Thebes and Its Necropolis
Once the capital of Egypt during the Middle and New Kingdoms, the ancient city of Thebes—now called Luxor—includes the temples of Karnak and Luxor and the royal temples on the west bank, along with the different necropolises, the most famous of which is the Valley of the Kings with the Tomb of Tutankhamun. Don’t miss the Valley of the Queens, especially the stunning Tomb of Nefertari, as well as the Tombs of the Nobles, and the ancient Egyptian workmen's village, Deir al-Medina.
Memphis and Its Necropolis
Located south of the modern heart of Cairo, the ancient capital of Memphis was the longest active capital in ancient Egypt. Its strategic location enabled it to keep its role throughout history. The most visible remains of the town are its necropolises, which encompass the Giza Pyramids, Saqqara Pyramids, and Dahshur Pyramids, as well as many private tombs in rectangular superstructures called mastaba. Let’s not forget the Sphinx that overlooks and guards the area.
Nubian Monuments from Philae to Abu Simbel
Nubia, located in the south of Egypt, contains ancient archeological sites with magnificent monuments, such as the Temple of Isis at Philae and the colossal rock-cut Temple of Rameses II at Abu Simbel.
Abu Mina
Built over the tomb of the martyr Menas of Alexandria, this archeological site is home to a church, a baptistry, basilicas, public buildings, streets, monasteries, houses, and workshops that have remained visible since their foundation in the 4th century.
Saint Catherine
This area has been a natural protectorate since 1996, and it is considered a holy site to the three Abrahamic faiths: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Its famous monastery, the Orthodox Monastery of St. Catherine, is situated midway to the summit of Mount Sinai. It is considered the oldest active Christian monasteries in the world.
Wadi al-Hitan (Whale Valley)
Located in the Western Desert of Egypt, Wadi al-Hitan is a natural UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to the well-preserved fossils of an extinct suborder of whales, the archaeoceti. These fossils corroborate the theory that whales evolved from land mammals to sea mammals

Sat, 16 Dec 2023 - 09min - 158 - 48 Hours at the Grafton Hotel Dublin
My recent stay at the Grafton Hotel in Dublin was a terrific experience from start to finish. The hotel's prime location allowed me to immerse myself in the vibrant energy of the city, with iconic landmarks and cultural attractions such as Trinity College and the Book of Kells, just a stone's throw away. The stylish atmosphere of this boutique 128 bedroom hotel exuded a perfect blend of sophistication and warmth, creating a welcoming and comfortable ambiance.
The festive Christmas tree and decor added an extra layer of luxury to the experience. The rooms interiors blend modern elegance with classic charm, creating a welcoming and tranquil atmosphere. The furnishings are not only aesthetically pleasing but also remarkably comfortable, providing a very restful night's sleep.
The thoughtful amenities provide a touch of indulgence, from plush bedding to state-of-the-art technology, The attention to detail extended to the impeccable cleanliness and well thought out organisation of the space, showcasing the hotel's commitment to providing a top-notch guest experience.
Contrary to the occasional disappointment that can accompany hotel restaurants, the dining experience at Bartley's at the Grafton Hotel was a delightful exception. From the outset, the starters were a symphony of flavours, each dish showcasing culinary expertise and a creative touch that surpassed typical hotel dining expectations. The Glin Valley Chicken wings were one of the best that I've had plus the amazing flavours of the very creative Corn Ribs with curry seasoning and Lime... a delightful first for me!
For my main course, I went for a traditional turkey and ham dish, this was served with roast potatoes, veg & sprouts, Cranberry Sauce, Chestnuts and Gravy - Ooh - this was was a highlight that left a lasting impression. Amazing value for just €26 - The execution was flawless, with the meat cooked to perfection. Bartley's restaurant is a culinary gem, with great service and an ambiance that enhanced the overall enjoyment of the meal. This dining experience was a testament to the hotel's head chef's Lee's commitment to providing guests with a gastronomic journey that transcends the ordinary. The Shepherd's pie is hearty, flavourful, comforting, rich, succulent, well-seasoned, indulgent, satisfying, classic, aromatic, wholesome, delectable, mouthwatering, expertly layered, tender and just melt-in-your-mouth. You may have guessed that I enjoyed this dish just a little. It was the perfect dish for a crisp frosty December evening Braised Lamb Shoulder, Topped with Creamy Mash & Parmesan well prices at €20.
The Grafton Cosmo..... delicious and thanks to cocktail legend Gary Campbell for the recommendation!
Bartley's Cocktail Bar has a very exciting range of mixologists masterpieces - One of my faves was the very decadent Grafton Cosmo - Belvedere Blackberry & Lemongrass Vodka, Triple Sec, Cranberry Juice, and Fresh Lime - €14
Breakfast was also excellent the following morning with lots of options from the perfectly cooked traditional Irish Breakfast, Power Bowls, Savoury Croissants and a delightful array of light pastries and muffins. Give yourself plenty of time for the day's most important meal here - The coffee was also superb.
The Grafton is doing some great special offers for December and January with luxury doubles from €180 for two with breakfast. They also have a funky and rather stylish eight bed room for that special guys or gals night out. Bunk Beds with a stylish twist and those rooms from €375.
Sometimes a little break in your own city can be wonderful and I thoroughly enjoyed my Trinity Trails Tour with our wonderful student guide who's passion and exuberance for this wonderful college was infectious and at only €16 it was great value.
We sometimes forget how amazing the Book of Kells and the library room are! Just wondering around the campus with it's wonderful variety of flora and fauna makes even myself feel positively erudite. The alma mater of Wilde and Beckett and our first woman Pressie - Mary Robinson indeed. A few hours of retail therapy in Brown Thomas topped off a very perfect stay in this area of Dublin.... Grafton Street at 11 is a little bit of heaven indeed....
A big thanks to Barry Francis and his team at the Grafton Hotel for their warm and effortless hospitality, creating an inviting and memorable experience. Their genuine friendliness and attentiveness made every interaction feel personal and welcoming. From check-in to dining and all points in between, the staff possess a genuine enthusiasm that reflects a commitment to exceptional service.

When the Christmas lights are lighted up for the first time at Armazéns do Chiado, it means that the Christmas season is officially open. The lights call for late afternoon walks around Lisbon, where you may find several craft stalls, ice rinks, concerts and a lot of joy. Santa Claus is of course always moving around the city, trying to figure out the wishes of the younger ones. Before visiting the markets it’s always worthwhile charging batteries with a slice "king’s cake” or "queen’s cake” -season-typical Portuguese Christmas pastries. You will find both these and other Christmas delicacies in almost every pastry shop in the city. So let’s put a warm coat on, wear a comfortable pair of shoes, and start your visit to Lisbon’s Christmas markets…
The Nurnemberg Christmas Markets
The Nuremberg Christmas market is one of the oldest and certainly the most famous Christmas market in the world. In the wooden stalls of the “little town made of wood and cloth” you can find traditional, often hand-made Christmas decorations and sweet treats such as gingerbread. Additional attractions include the children's Christmas and the star house, the market of the twin cities and the Nuremberg children's light parade.
The History of Frankfurt's Christmas Market
The Frankfurt Christmas Market is indeed no ordinary event. Its history has been traced back to 1393, when first reference thereof was made in official documentation. The market was traditionally accompanied by the performance of ecclesiastical mystery plays, which were also held on the Römerberg.

Sat, 16 Sep 2023 - 06min - 148 - Ireland's Ancient East - A Hole in One
As Ireland gears up to host the Ryder Cup in 2027, Ed Finn decided to brush up on his swing and get back in the game. Ireland’s Ancient East is one of four unique regional experience destinations in Ireland. This region has exceptional roots; over 5,000 years of history are visible as you travel through its lush green landscapes, with many historical sites of global significance, from the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Brú Na Bóinne/Newgrange to Slane Castle.
Ireland's Ancient East has world class golf courses and this summer will have hosted prestigious international tournaments and some of the top ranked golfers in the world - Ed enjoyed classes from Golf Pros, Sean Kirkpatrick at County Louth Golf Club and and Ed Martin from the adjacent SeaPoint Golf Club - Ed enjoyed two wonderful days in this area. He was based in Drogheda just 15 minutes drive from the nearby golf course and stayed in the Award Winning Four Star D Hotel. He enjoyed some delicious fare at Scholars Town House Hotel where he met local chef Dave Kelly and expert in house Sommelier Eugene Molloy. Ed really enjoyed his tour of Slane Castle with its fascinating history and Slane Distillery is a really enjoyable experience. Getting into the inner passage at Newgrange was a total bucket list moment for Ed and the amazing simulation of the winter solstice event was spine tingling stuff. The whole Brú na Bóinneexperience including Knowth was incredible. Ed left Ireland's Ancient East feeling rich in history and very young at heart. Plus he sank a 15 foot putt on the 18th at Seapoint! Rory McElroy would have been proud of him. Money well spent on those lessons! A big thanks to Discover Ireland for arranging Ed's Itinerary - it's amazing what you can do and see in two days in Ireland's Ancient East.

Düsseldorf sets trends. It's the fashion capital of Germany with more than 800 showrooms presenting the latest designer and couture creations – and not just during fashion week. The lively and diverse metropolis on the Rhine offers historic sights, picturesque parks with lively cultural centres, interesting museums and a wonderful array of restaurants, cafes and bars. The same sentiment is felt in Carlstadt, an idyllic borough full of antique shops, galleries and art dealers. Sat, 01 Jul 2023 - 07min - 140 - Discovering Cleveland
The second-most populous city in Ohio, Cleveland is known for its cultural scene, Polish heritage, and musical history. Nicknamed ‘The Forest City’, Cleveland is a fantastic tourist destination with plenty of attractions.
Despite being a metropolitan city, it can often get overlooked as a travel spot. Emily Lauerwas this week's guest on Travel Talk and chatted to Ed about are some of the things that make Cleveland unique and why you should add it to your travel plans. Now with a direct Aer Lingus flight from Dublin to Cleveland with fares from €245 each way it is opening up some great new options for travellers to this part of the US.
Cleveland is famous for its sports teams and passionate fans, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a variety of tasty local cuisines, lively neighbourhoods, and parks. This charming city has a lot to offer those who take the time to explore it.
Cleveland is also known for being the hometown of some of the biggest celebrities in the entertainment industry. The city is packed with historic and trendy to see and discover.
Rock And Roll Roots
When it comes to the music scene, Ohio is known for its deep-rooted history of rock and roll. And this is in no small part due to Cleveland. It is one of the urban centres where Rock and Roll originated and gained relevance.
The city’s large black community produced some of the earliest rock and roll acts in the Southern United States.
Credit to these origin stories, one of the main attractions that Cleveland is famous for is the iconic Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This museum preserves and tells the history of rock and roll music. It is undoubtedly one of the most famous landmarks in Ohio.
Here, music lovers will discover exhibits on some of the most influential rock and roll musicians, such as Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix, and The Beatles.
Rock and roll music is a significant part of Cleveland’s cultural heritage, making it a favourite destination for fans of the genre.
Strong Art Culture
Cleveland is known for its rich cultural heritage that includes an impressive art culture. The city is home to the Cleveland Orchestra, which is widely considered one of the best in the world. The Severance Hall serves as its concert venue and it has hosted plenty of celebrities and influential figures in the music scene.
You are in for an interesting exploration at the Cleveland Museum of Art, home to over 45,000 works of art that span 6,000 years of art history. Some of the best works of Monet, Vans Gogh, and Picasso are exhibited here.
Sports Culture
Cleveland enjoys a great sports atmosphere, as the residents are some of the most passionate sports fans in the region. The city has multiple prominent sports teams across the major leagues in the United States.
Some of the top sports franchises in Cleveland include the Cavaliers(basketball), the Browns(football), and the Guardians(baseball).
The 372,000-populace of the city is affiliated with these sports teams, so the easiest way to start a conversation with the locals is to bring up a topic about any sports of similar interest.
Little Italy
Little Italy is one of the prominent ethnic neighbourhoods Cleveland is known for. It was established in the late 19th century by Italian immigrants.
The area was named ‘Little Italy’ because it was the second and smaller community of Italians in Cleveland after ‘Bigger Italy’, which eventually became nonexistent. Now, it is a prime destination for art and food enthusiasts.
Places of interest include the Little Italy Historical Museum, the ALTA House and Library, and the historical Holy Rosary church building. Little Italy thrives with its various attractions that have continued to attract visitors to the area.
Collinwood
Formerly a village in Euclid Township, Collinwood is a historical area, known for its infamous history before and after it was annexed by Cleveland.
Two years before its annexation in 1910, Collinwood was the site of a tragic school fire incident in Lakeview, which cost the lives of 172 children, two teachers, and a rescuer. Following its annexation, the area was divided into two neighbourhoods, Collinwood-Nottingham and North-Shore Collinwood — both of which have their unique attractions.
There are fancy boutiques, art galleries, music and so many other places and things to enjoy here. However, if you want to have a sober reflection or pay respect to some of the victims of the fire incident, visit Lakeview Cemetery.
Ohio City
One of the oldest neighbourhoods Cleveland is known for is Ohio City. Originally an independent district, Ohio City was annexed by Cleveland in 1854. The neighbourhood is home to historic and trendy sites ready for visitors to explore and enjoy. The popular West Side Market is packed with eateries and shops where you can discover a variety of local Ohio food and craft beer, as well as buy gifts from local vendors.
This is definitely one of the main districts to visit for some simple fun when traveling in Cleveland.
Asiatown
Cleveland is famous for its cultural diversity and one of the communities that has broadened the city’s culture is Asiatown.
Located east of downtown, Asiatown is a small neighbourhood with a predominantly Chinese, Vietnamese, and Korean population. The blend of Asian culture makes it a unique attraction to experience everything Asian.
The biggest attraction here is the tasty authentic cuisines that are served in different restaurants in the district. It is a truly delightful destination for food lovers, so ready your chopsticks and cleanse your taste buds for an enormous dim sum.
Old Stone Church
The oldest building in Public Square, Old Stone Church was built in 1855, becoming only the second church built within the city limits.
Due to the type of material(sandstone) used in building the church, it was named the ‘Stone Church’ but was later renamed ‘Old Stone Church’.
The building’s Romanesque-style architecture makes it one of the most fascinating landmarks Cleveland is famous for.
While you can explore the interior alone, the church offers guided tours to learn more about the building and the history of the church. You will find the construction history to be very interesting.
Terminal Tower
Another imposing landmark in Public Square is the 52-story skyscraper, Terminal Tower. The structure was built during the skyscraper boom in the early 1900s — at the time, it was the tallest building in Cleveland and the second-tallest in the world.
It boasts fantastic deco-style architecture with detailed etchings and gold trim on the railings. During special events, the tower lights up with various color-schemed lights that reflect the festivity or season.
Today, Terminal Tower serves as a mixed-used building and has housed some notable companies as its tenants.
James A Garfield Memorial
Located in Lake View Cemetery, James A. Garfield Memorial is a memorial for James A. Garfield, the 20th President of the United States. The memorial is also his resting place. Standing at 180 feet, the monument, constructed with Berea sandstone, features terra-cotta panels with 110 figures etched in depicting the life of Garfield. It is one of the most famous monuments in the city and a top destination Cleveland is known for.
Visitors can walk up to the outdoor balcony to catch views of the Lake Erie shoreline. Along this iconic lake, you can find some lovely beaches as well.

Solar Eclipse - Countdown to April 8, 2024
A total solar eclipse is set to occur on April 8, 2024, and this time Cleveland lies within the path of totality—promising nearly four minutes of darkness in the middle of the afternoon as the Moon moves between the Earth and the Sun. Cleveland won’t be in the path of totality again until the year 2444.
THE SCIENCE OF A SOLAR ECLIPSEA solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth—covering the face of the Sun. This celestial phenomena occurs two to four times per year.
But what makes the upcoming eclipse so special? In 2024, the city of Cleveland will experience a total solar eclipse, experiencing nearly four minutes of darkness. Total solar eclipses can only be observed from areas in the path of totality—the narrow track of the Moon's shadow along the Earth. This path is typically 1,000 miles long but only 100 miles wide.
Map Courtesy of: NationalEclipse.com
SAFE VIEWING METHODSWhen observing the eclipse before and after totality (partial or annular eclipse), viewers must look through safe solar-viewing glasses, or "eclipse glasses." These are much darker than regular sunglasses to combat the Sun's intense rays. Other safe methods for viewing the eclipse include projection techniques such as pinholes and solar filters for optics. Only when totality occurs is it safe to remove eye protection and look directly at the covered Sun for the duration of totality.
CELEBRATE THE ECLIPSE ALL YEAR LONG
Stay tuned for information about upcoming Museum programs, which will culminate in a viewing party in University Circle's Wade Oval on April 8, 2024!
