Tue, 03 Jan 2023 - 139 - Reason to Return Series: Sharon Hodde Miller
Don't miss this reprise episode with author Sharon Hodde Miller, who is a church planter and mom of three living in North Carolina. She's the author of the new book, "Cost of Control" (which I loved) and also wrote two other books: "Nice" and "Free of Me." She's got a Ph.D. and a strong voice online and in person, as she writes, preaches and shares the messages God has given her with people across the country. I knew I wanted to ask Sharon to endorse my book right away and was so thankful that she said "yes." Here's what she has to say about "Reason to Return: Why Women Need the Church & the Church Needs Women:" "In our current culture, the Church is not known for its virtues. When stories of corruption and scandal seem to emerge every week, it’s no wonder people are staying away. Thankfully, these stories of church failure are not the full picture. In pockets of faithfulness all over the world, God’s people are showing up to be Jesus’ hands and feet, and Ericka is telling this story. While the Church is not perfect, it is still a place of healing and calling, which is why I am so grateful to Ericka for beckoning women home." You can see all the endorsements here & order your copy of the book here. *Don't miss the freebie bundle you get when you pre-order (including a FREE Audible version of the book when you buy a hard copy!) Tue, 06 Dec 2022 - 138 - Paige Rien: A Former HGTV Star & the Sober, Faith Journey She Never Expected
In this episode of the podcast, I speak with Paige Rien, a former HGTV home improvement star and current designer that helps people cultivate and love their homes! Her latest book is Revived & Renovated: Conversations on the Intersection of Home, Faith & Everything in Between. I had no idea how much Paige and I had in common when we started this conversation, but when you say "eating disorder" and "sobriety," I'm immediately gonna be your best friend. In this conversation, I talk to Paige about what it was like ascending to semi-fame on TV, her struggle with addictions, infertility and converting to Catholicism. I was fascinated by her adult conversion, her many, hard-won years of sobriety from alcohol and how she's built a better life for herself and her family through it all. Tue, 29 Nov 2022 - 137 - Krystal Parker: President of the Christian Chamber
In this episode, I speak with Krystal Parker, the President of the Florida Christian Chamber. She is passionate about integrating Christian faith into the workplace helping people make wise decisions about their careers and how they spend their money. Reminder: Most of spend 8-9 hours a day working. How could we even consider that our faith wouldn't factor in? God is MOVING in the professional workplace in big ways right now. I was fascinated by this conversation, where we discussed how God uses the career place to change hearts, minds and glorify Himself. Bonus fun: Krystal attended Harvard Business School and scaled the corporate ladder of a Fortune 200 publicly traded oil and gas company, where she became the youngest executive among a handful of women officers. She is also a single mom who is an inspiration to so many women. I have no doubt you'll love this conversation and be moved and inspired to incorporate your faith more deeply into your work. Wed, 16 Nov 2022 - 136 - Katy Faust: Child Rights Matter More Than Adult Desires
When I first heard about Katy Faust's organization, Them Before Us, I was intrigued. Childrens' rights? Aren't those built in? You would think so, but it's not truly the case in modern society. Them Before Us is a global movement defending children’s right to their mother and father. What does this mean though? It means that in all things -- from divorce to abortion to surrogacy to remarriage and more -- children deserve to be put first. As Katy deftly educates in her book, children who grow up in a family with married, biological parents fare the very best in all life circumstances. There are always outliers, but statistical majorities show this is true. In this episode we talk about: How no-fault divorce led to horrible outcomes for children How surrogacy & egg/sperm donation leave children with a primal trauma wound from birth How children are harmed when there is either no father or no mother in the home How the most dangerous person for a child is an unrelated family member living in the home (ie. mom's boyfriend) What it would mean to truly put children FIRST instead of leading with adult sympathy and desires above all. This is an important and fascinating conversation. I loved talking with Katy and share her heart for childrens' rights. Tue, 08 Nov 2022 - 135 - Elizabeth Rhyno: Finding Joy in All the Things
In this episode, I'm speaking with my friend Elizabeth Rhyno. She is a worship pastor, mom of three (fresh adults!), and faith life coach for Christian women. Elizabeth is truly one of the kindest souls I've ever met and she has been an incredible friend to me over the past couple of years. Here, we speak about what it means to parent in uncertainty, how to find joy even things are going wrong and live in the moment God has put you in. Many unexpected things have happened to Elizabeth, as she and her husband, Scott, have been called to ministry in a variety of locations. It was fun to ask her a few questions about her view of Americans, as a Canadian! Elizabeth's husband pastors my home church and I've been so privileged to walk in their guidance. I love hearing about Elizabeth's dream of starting a respite and retreat center for women! Doesn't that sound incredible? Enjoy this conversation! In this episode, I speak with Clarissa Moll, a friend, author, mother and recent widow. Clarissa lost her husband of 17 years, Rob, in a hiking accident. She was left to parent her four children and deal with the traumatic aftermath of it all. In her grief, Clarissa has invited others alongside her online. She's created a beautiful online space on Instagram and shared her words of wisdom in tons of articles online everywhere from Christianity Today to the Gospel Coalition. Despite her struggle, Clarissa has a joyful and resilient spirit. I've been privileged to get to know her this year, as a fellow writer and mom! Tue, 25 Oct 2022 - 133 - Melissa Zaldivar: How Jesus Holds Us Together When Life is Falling Apart
Melissa Zaldivar is the author of the new & awesomely titled "What Cannot Be Lost: How Jesus Holds Us Together When Life is Falling Apart." I spoke with Melissa about her life in New England, the story of losing her best friend to cancer and what she learned through the grief and loss of that experience. Melissa is an incredible and insightful writer whose words are full of wisdom. At a time when loss has become familiar to all of us in some way, shape or form, her book and this interview speak to the emotions of so many. Whether is loss of a person, a dream or something else, you'll be sure to resonate with Melissa's experience. She also did the coolest thing, by weaving in the story of Little Women (which is set in the town she lives in!) and the loss of Beth in that story (which is true!), into her book. In other words, Little Women lovers will get an extra special treat. I really enjoyed this conversation and know you will too! Wed, 12 Oct 2022 - 132 - What’s Wrong With Surrogacy? Jennifer Lahl, Center for Bioethics & Culture
Is surrogacy bad news? Today, I’m talking with Jennifer Lahl, founder and president of The Center for Bioethics and Culture. She has written, commented and produced multiple films on the concerns and ethics of things like egg donors, surrogate pregnancy, sperm donation and the problems with the Big Fertility industry. Most people haven’t thought much abut these issues, but they are becoming more and more prevalent and are worth consideration, especially if you find yourself dealing with fertility issues. In this episode, we talk about: How Big Fertility targets and exploits poor and vulnerable women The trauma that comes with not knowing one’s biological parents Lack of regulation in the fertility industry The money & corruption inside the fertility industry Coming trends like human cloning and more in-depth genetic prenatal testing After going through IVF myself, I became wary of the fertility industry and now have even more concerns. People don’t want to think about what Jennifer brings to the table, but this stuff is cultivating the future and we have a generation of children without parents, children being brought into the world on purpose without a mom and a dad and much more. It’s worth paying attention to! Some of Jennifer’s films include: Eggsploitation Anonymous Father’s Day #BigFertility: It’s All About the Money Breeders: A Subclass of Women? *You can watch all the films for free on YouTube or here! Wed, 07 Sep 2022 - 131 - Monica Ritchie: Lady Theologian For Normal People
Monica Ritchie is relatable, approachable and has a TON of valuable knowledge about the Bible that many of us fellow Christians can stand to hear more about. She went to seminary as a young mom and just recently graduated! As a Bible Teacher who *loves* theology, she often discussing hot topics on TikTok and Instagram, and sends out resources to her email list. Monica's passion is to bring you real faith & theology you can embody, alongside real life. She says: “I go to seminary so you don’t have to" and she wants to make sure as many people as possible know more about God. Because when you know more about God, you can love Him more deeply! I loved chatting with Monica about mom life, how her beliefs changed in seminary (not in a bad way!) and what its like to live our your calling. Wed, 28 Sep 2022 - 130 - Overcoming a Church Cult Background: Leah's Story
My friend Leah grew up in what she calls a "cult," a super-fundamentalist church setting where women were routinely put down, disrespected and where she never heard that God loved her. To her, this is just what Christianity was. As she says, "When you're in a cult, they don't tell you you're in a cult." It wasn't until years later, in young adulthood, that Leah attended a "normal" Christian church and began to recognize what had happened to her growing up. Thankfully, she encountered a healthy church community walked alongside her, even helping pay for years of therapy to overcome her past. It's been a long journey, but Leah has been able to emerge from this painful church history and thrive inside a healthy church body for several years now. Rather than running away from God, she got curious and began exploring what it looked like to be a. Christian in a place that was not abusive and that did value her as a woman. I share Leah's story in my upcoming book, "Reason to Return: Why Women Need the Church and the Church Needs Women." This is the first peek inside a few podcast episodes that will be dedicated to telling powerful stories of the church in the lives of women. Tue, 20 Sep 2022 - 129 - Betsy Painter: A Christian's Guide to Planet Earth
Betsy Painter is a creative writer and conservation biologist, who is passionate about environmental care and its human dimensions. She has studied Religion and Ecology in graduate school with a focus on the beautification of nature in the redemptive Biblical narrative and its implications for environmental hope and messaging today. I spoke with Betsy about her new book, A Christian's Guide to Planet Earth: Why it Matters and How to Care For it. More and more Christians have been working and supportive of policies and actions to help protect the Earth in recent years. Climate change has become a big issue for many young Christians and its cool to see those who are making a difference. I thought it was really neat that Betsy studied Religion and Ecology -- what a neat combo. And to bring in a Biblical narrative to all of this is so important. When I think about Earth, my mind roams back to Eden and all the majestic creativity God put into forming this planet, it's many kinds of plants, animals, mountains, waters and mysteries. Betsy has a world of knowledge and I think every Christian needs to care about this issue! Tue, 13 Sep 2022 - 127 - Christians of all Kinds Love Sheila Gregoire's Message on Sex
Christian sex advice has a bad rap. Sheila Gregoire is changing that. She's been making waves in the Christian world for several years now. Her latest book, The Great Sex Rescue, dives deep into the patriarchal culture of Christian sex "advice" and ideology over the years. On social media, and in her book, she calls out specific teachings and ideas that have been harmful to women and to Christian marriages specifically for decades. What I find fascinating is that both theologically conservative and theologically progressive Christians love her! As a conservative myself (and fan of Sheila's work), I wanted to dig deeper into what it is that appeals to Christians from across the spectrum. I spoke with Sheila and her daughter and co-author Rebecca Gregoire Lindenbach for an article I was writing, but I loved the audio so much I asked if I could share it! This episode may sound a little different than a typical one, but totally worth a listen -- as Sheila and Rebecca share their unfiltered opinions about what's gone wrong and how they are trying to fix it! Tue, 30 Aug 2022 - 126 - Tiana Schowe: Talking about Jesus on TikTok
Tiana Schowe doesn't care about how many followers she has on TikTok, but she does have a lot of them -- nearly 100,000. A couple of years ago, she started talking about her faith, evidence for it and whatever Biblical item God led her to that day. Her diligence and authenticity, willingness to address hard topics and critics, has led people to really hear her voice on the fastest growing social media platform around. Many have been hesitant to join TikTok, but after personally jumping on board this year -- I can tell you, we need Christian voices there! I was intrigued by Tiana's message and her personal story, so I asked her to come chat about her TikTok ministry and why she does what she does! If you have an interest in speaking for the Gospel on social media, she is a good person to hear from! Wed, 17 Aug 2022 - 125 - Natalie Runion: Why We Choose to Stay in the Church
Natalie Runion is a lot of fun to chat with. When I found her account, @RaisedToStay, on social media, I immediately knew I needed to get her on the podcast. Her own description is best here: "For those of us who have been called and crushed, loved and sometimes left, welcomed and wounded by the Church yet our anointing keeps us holding on." In honest, authentic fashion, Natalie talks about her childhood as a pastor's kid, becoming a pastor and what makes her stay even after hardship and heartache. Her message is for those who have stayed and wandered, those who understand that church is not just a building, but a people and the home and heart of Jesus. On her website, she says this; "How we process the hard contributes to how we protect and grow our hearts." She is a wife, mom, nurse, writer and founder of Purposed Box, which she intends to help women grown their faith despite the busyness of life. I also love the description that says "Soul care gifts to nourish your spirit." Wed, 20 Jul 2022 - 123 - Anne Wilson: Christian Singer and Songwriter
Anne Wilson is beautiful inside and out. The singer and songwriter from Kentucky has seen some of her songs rise to popularity quickly and her ability to create meaningful melody and lyrics are one-of-a-kind. I found her by accident, searching for songs about the Church. That's when I stumbled upon her song, "Sunday Sermons." I liked it so much, I decided to listen to her whole album on Pandora. Then, I was hooked! I rarely listen to a full album or get attached to one artist, but there was something about Anne that got me good. I was so excited when she agreed to come on the podcast and our conversation doesn't disappoint. Even as a 20-year-old, our conversation encouraged me as a Momma! When she talks about how her parents raised her, and her own faith journey before and after the death of her big brother, Jacob, I was moved and grateful. In this episode, we talk about: Growing up in the church, but not always loving it Anne's unexpected journey to singing (which began when she first sang publicly at her brother's funeral) The art of songwriting and how her creativity works Her heart for the Lord and why she'll always use music to reach them Anne's role models and inspirations Tune in and enjoy one of my favorite episodes of the podcast! Tue, 12 Jul 2022 - 122 - What Does a Post-Roe World Look Like with Lifeline Children's Services
Here's a special, pop-up episode of the Worth Your Time podcast! spoke with Herbie Newell, President of Lifeline Children's Services about the Dobbs decision and what things may look like after it drops. In this conversation we discuss myths about the pro-life movement and pregnancy centers, public policy options and how churches are an essential part of caring for women. What I think you'll find is that regardless of what happens, pro-lifers want to make abortion "unthinkable." We want every woman to have the network of support she needs and never feel like she needs to end the life of her child to survive. Thu, 23 Jun 2022 - 121 - Kelly Speck: Hope in the Heartache
Kelly Speck never dreamed her newborn son would be anything but perfect, but just after birth he was taken to the NICU and thus began "a nightmare journey.” She was told her son wouldn't live long, but he overcame the odds. That doesn't mean everything has been smooth, however. Bennett has quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy. Despite the struggles this has brought to the family, Kelly has a message for everyone: there is hope in the heartache. In her new memoir, Hope in the Heartache, she details the memoir of her life as Bennett's mom and what it's been like to fight along side him. In this interview, we talk about the full experience of this motherhood journey, including how Kelly has consistently clung to God through it all. Tue, 21 Jun 2022 - 120 - Nancy Pearcey: Christianity and the Human Body
In this episode, we hear from Nancy Pearcey, a prolific and inspiring Christian author who wrote the acclaimed book, "Love Thy Body: Answering Hard Questions About Life and Sexuality." When so many of today's sex and body issues are confusing, Pearcey gets directly to the point of our bodies, sexuality and existence as beings made in God's image. As her book's description reads, it aims "to counter the hostility toward the human body and the biological facts of life that drives many of today’s heart-wrenching headline stories." She covers abortion, transgenderism, homosexuality, hook-up culture and so much more. I was honored to get to speak with this incredible woman, once dubbed “America’s preeminent evangelical Protestant female intellectual.” I have learned so much from her and I know you will too! Tue, 14 Jun 2022 - 119 - Chelsey Youman: Pro-life, Holistic, Comprehensive Care
In this episode, I speak with Chelsey Youman, Texas State Director and National Legislative Advisor for the Human Coalition. Chelsey has been on the frontlines of the abortion fight and THC represents thousands of women who have chosen life for their babies. Here, we discuss how pro lifers are coming together to make even more provisions and legisltion to help vulnerable women in this precarious time. Chelsey debunks myths about abortion facilities and pro lifers in general. She tells us about some of the awesome work on the table right now to help empower women to choose life! My favorite stat is that 75% of women surveyed (who are considering abortion say they would prefer to parent, rather than have an abortion, if life circumstances were different. What's awesome is that prolife orgs like the Human Coalition are ensuring these women have what they need to change those circumstances for the better! Christie Thomas knows what it takes to help you disciple your children well. As the mother of three boys and a former children's ministry director, she also knows it can be overwhelming. When I discovered Christie's work last year, I was taken in a second. As I struggled to teach my littles about faith, I found her resources, which include devotional books, children's books and an online community, an answer to prayer. In this interview, I speak with Christie about how she developed such an awesome curriciulum, how moms can more easily help grow deep faith roots in their kids (even really little ones) and why it doesn't have to be as "hard" as it may seem at first. I use Christie's books every single day in my family and have bought ALL of her devotionals and books so it's safe to say I am a huge fan! Tue, 31 May 2022 - 117 - Joni Earekson Tada: Joy, Heaven & Quadriplegia
Joni Earekson Tada is a name I've known for most of my life. I remember her book sitting on a bookshelf in my childhood church, her story of becoming a quadrapilegic at 17 years old after a diving accident. And yet, in the midst of this personal tragedy, she reached out to God and He has worked through her life in the most incredible ways. When I saw her new children's book, The Awesome Super Fantastic Forever Party Storybook, I knew I had to ask if I could interview her. I am so thankful she said yes and gave me her precious time for this interview. Here, we talk about what it was like right after her accident, how she felt and how God moved in her life over time. We talk about her amazing ministry, Joni and Friends, which provides wheelchairs & ministry to people who are disabled across the world. She reveals how she stays joyful in chronic pain and what heaven really means to her. It was truly an honor to chat with this amazing woman of God. I learned so much about how to handle suffering, even the little bit I have in my own life. I encourage to take the 25 minutes of this episode and listen closely. Hannah Keeley is known as America's #1 Mom Coach (don't we all need one of those?!) She has created Mom Mastery University with all kinds of classes and resources for moms and she trains Christian life coaches around the world. Oh -- did I mention she's a mom of 7 children? Yup -- she's got ALL the experience. That experience is hard-won, however. After getting overwhelmed in early motherhood, she knew something had to change. She prayed and asked God to help her dig out of the pit. With "bull-headed determination," she began to create a better life and a better motherhood. Tue, 17 May 2022 - 115 - Dr. Christina Francis: American Association of Pro-Life OB-GYNs
Dr. Christina Francis is the Chairman of the Board of the American Association of Pro-Life OB-GYNs. I spoke with her for a story, but her answers were so incredible that I just had to deliver this interview as a podcast episode as well. In this episode, Dr. Francis answers questions about her reaction to Roe v. Wade possibly being overturned, and speaks to some of the myths that have been circulating since the news came out. We speak about: ' Could ectopic pregnancies and miscarriage somehow be criminalized? How is medical treatment different than abortion? The dangers of the abortion pill and self-managed abortions at home (complications are 4x higher and she speaks to this.) The abortion pill reversal program (they've seen over 3,000 babies delivered to women who changed their minds after taking their first abortion pill) The truth behind 2nd & 3rd trimester abortions How often do fetal anomalies make it "necessary" to have an abortion? How does abortion harm women in ways beyond the actual procedure? This is not easy subject matter, but I hope it's clear from this conversation that those of us who are pro-life are genuine and compassionate about our care for both women and children. Dr. Francis does an incredible job clarifying some information that I think gets clouded in media circles. I hope you'll consider what she has to say! Tue, 10 May 2022 - 114 - Amanda Held Opelt: Faith, Grief and Grace
In this episode, I speak with Amanda Held Opelt, an author, mother and songwriter who lives in the mountains of North Carolina with her husband and two daughters. Amanda's upcoming book, A Hole in the World: Finding Hope in Rituals of Grief and Meaning, she dives into her own grief over her miscarriages, the unexpected death of her sister, Rachel Held Evans and her grandmother. She asks and answers questions that plagued her: What does it mean to truly grieve and to grieve well? Why is it so hard to move on? Why didn’t my faith prepare me for this kind of pain? And what am I supposed to do now? In this beautiful memoir and in our conversation, Amanda speaks about her own grief, the legacy of her sister and more broadly, the wider world of human grief practices in different cultures and eras. It was an honor to speak with Amanda and I encourage you check out her upcoming book. Tue, 03 May 2022 - 113 - Erin Wheeler: The True Beauty of the Church
Erin Wheeler is a gem and her love for the Christian Church is contagious! After I heard Erin on another podcast, I immediately knew I had to interview her. She's written a beautiful book on the Church, why it matters, what it's purpose is and she's participating in her local church in admirable ways as well. Her message is one of truth, good doctrine and deep understanding of God's beloved, His Church -- in the form of the local church and the universal Church around the world. Whether you are new to church or grew up going, you'll learn something from Erin in this episode. As someone who did grow up in church, I'm shocked by how much I never knew until recently! The more you understand about the purpose of the Church, the more appreciation and understanding you have for it's incredible value. I consider Erin a partner in this ministry to advocate on behalf of the Bride of Christ, His imperfect but beloved church body! Tue, 19 Apr 2022 - 112 - Jennie Allen: Saying 'Yes' to God
In this episode of "Worth Your Time" podcast, I speak with author, speaker and If Gathering Founder Jennie Allen! Years ago, Jennie told God she was up for "ANYTHING" God had for her life -- which ultimately led to the If Gathering and her book (which made me fall in love with her!), Anything. Of course I was so excited to speak with Jennie, after following her work for so long. She's got a new book and a new children's book series, which is especially exciting to me as a Mom. In this conversation, I chat with Jennie about her history in ministry, how she stays accountable and faithful as a leader, her new book, Find Your People: Building Deep Community in a Lonely World and her fabulous new children's series, Theolaby. It was so exciting to speak with Jennie, a woman of deep faith who is truly making a difference for Jesus in this generation! Tue, 05 Apr 2022 - 111 - Mikayla Albertson: Living Ordinary on Purpose
In this episode of Worth Your Time, I speak with Mikayla Albertson, author of the new book, Ordinary on Purpose: Surrendering Perfect and Discovering Beauty Amid the Rubble. Mikayla is a family doctor and mom of 5. She lived a life of striving and success, until one day God stopped her in her tracks. She says the world was screaming at her: "Do more! Be more! Have more! You can be perfect!" Then, her husband became addicted to drugs and life started falling apart. In the midst of the chaos and hardship, Mikayla realized all she really wanted was an ordinary life. All the good, hard, messy, gritty, lovely and beautiful. God spoke to her about changing her life and she listened. It wasn't easy, but Mikayla and her family eventually built that "ordinary life" she so longed for and she wants to tell others its possible too! You can follow her journey on Instagram here! Tue, 22 Mar 2022 - 110 - Hunter Beless: Helping Women Know and Love God More
In this episode of the podcast, I speak with Hunter Beless, the founder and host of the "Journeywomen" podcast, which has become one of my favorites over the years. I love Hunter's focus because she digs deeply into theological topics and talks with some of the spiritual heavyweights many of us admire. At the same time, she is relatable and a faithful mom raising three littles, serving in her church, teaching her kids and now -- she's written a children's book, which I'm so excited about! Hunter has become a familiar face on the speaking circuit and you can often find her at the Gospel Coalition women's conference or collaborating with the lovely ladies of Risen Motherhood (check out my episode with Laura Wifler here!) Don't miss her beautiful wisdom and enjoy this easy conversation with a fellow, Christian mom who wants to help you know God and love Him more. Tue, 08 Mar 2022 - 109 - Tsh Oxenreider: Bitter & Sweet Seasons of Life With God
In this episode, I speak with Tsh Oxenreider, a writer, podcaster, mom and world traveler. I first heard of Tsh years ago when she was working on her book about traveling around the world with her young family. I was fascinated and intrigued by her story and was so excited to have the opportunity to chat with Tsh about her new book, "Bitter and Sweet: A Journey Into Easter." Lent starts very soon (depending on when you listen to this!) so grab this book now. Also, even if you are listening off-season, grab it for the next Lent -- happens every year ;) She also has a great book on Advent if you are looking for other resources. I love what Tsh writes on her website: "I believe we become more human — more who we’re made to be — when we live sacramentally. Which is to say, when we see things how they really are, thanks to the good wisdom and creativity of our Maker." This episode is super short because I had a ton audio mishaps and then lost a big part of the interview. But, short and sweet never hurt anyone and wanted to make sure you heard about Tsh's important message for this book. If you are considering adding Lent to your annual ritual, I highly recommend it -- and a book companion with application resources to go along with it will make it all the more meaningful. Wed, 09 Feb 2022 - 107 - Sheila Gregoire: Let's Talk About Sex
Sheila Gregoire talks about sex and it's earned her some exclusion in the Christian world, but for all the wrong reasons. She's been writing and speaking on sex within Christian marriage for years, but her latest book, "The Great Sex Rescue" taps new ground -- and it's fascinating. She's done intensive, comprehensive surveys of men and women -- and her discoveries fuel what she covers in this book. Namely, Christians (and culture generally) have often put women in the terrible position of "obligation sex" or doing things they aren't comfortable with because they think they "owe" it to their husbands. That's just one of the things we cover, but an important one. That is NOT a healthy view of sex and no woman should feel this way. >>> More episodes here Sheila is bold and unafraid to tackle popular Christian marriage books and authors. In fact, she often excerpts some of the worst lines and exposes just how toxic, abusive and insane some of them are. She's authentic, fun and standing up for healthy relationships in a way that's refreshing and essential If you can't tell, I absolutely loved speaking with her and highly recommend her work! If you are struggling with sex in your marriage, I also want to mention the work of Janna Denton-Howes, a woman I have worked with and found to be an incredible, empowering resource. She helps women find joy and purpose, even in the moments that feel mundane. Moms of little kids are tired and short on time -- and Katie knows that! She helps them live into their unique, God-given purpose even when things feel chaotic. Practical help, encouragement, community and empowerment are values you offers and she is so relatable! Tue, 11 Jan 2022 - 105 - Elisha & Angela: Faith After Fundamentalism
Elisha and Angela are friends who grew up together in a very conservative fundamentalist church environment. Hell and damnation were the regular vibe and spiritual abuse ran rampant. The guilt and misguided ways in which their pastors and spiritual leaders taught them made Christianity confusing -- and not at all the true way of Jesus. As they got older, both of then eventually found their way to new avenues of the Christian faith. Over time, they each saw how screwed up their fundamentalist backgrounds really were. Today, they've been able to make peace with God but the religious trauma from the past is still there, beneath the surface. In this conversation, I speak with them both about what they went through, how they reconciled it and where they are today with their faith. As we begin to talk more openly about spiritual abuse and deep church hurt in society, I think some will resonate with their experience. Tue, 07 Dec 2021 - 104 - Jessica Hottle: Breaking Up With Lies From the Past
Jessica Hottle is a Christian writer, podcast host, speaker, and coach for women. Her new book, "Face Off With Your Feelings: Break Up with the Lies of Your Past and Embrace the Truth For Your Future" is available for pre-order now on her website. According to her bio, she "hates rules, restrictions, and religious duties" and lives her life by putting God first, and living authentically, with integrity, and in freedom through Christ. After living through a past where she idolized her body and letting men or work be the source of her value, she made a dramatic change. Jessica was able to find freedom from the pain of her past by realizing that her worth was only determined by the love of Jesus going to the cross for her. Her perspective as a coach and author is one that encourages women to be wholistically health in spirit, soul AND body. She loves to help women find freedom from their pasts and healing in their bodies through faith-based fitness coaching, books, and speaking events to create long-term, sustainable results. I loved chatting with Jessica about her transformation and also about how she's built a very cool brand and self-published multiple books with major success. Don't miss this inspiring conversation. Tue, 16 Nov 2021 - 103 - Amanda Waldron: Deconstructing (and Reconstructing) Your Christian Faith
Amanda Waldron has a job title that's very new to the scene: Deconstruction Coach. But not just any Deconstruction Coach. She's the kind that helps folks rebuild their faith when they are seasons of doubt and distress. A trained social worker, Amanda started to hear more issues related to faith in her professional practice. It gave her the idea to help more folks struggling online. As many struggle with doubt, church hurt or overcoming past faith struggles, they are in need of guidance. Unfortunately, too many people offering that are leading people away from Christ rather than back to Him. Amanda helps people recover the authentic parts of their faith and discover a deeper way to believe. She exposes the parts of Christianity that were never meant to represent God and works with people to overcome myths or misinformation they may be carrying with them unnecessarily. One of her mantras if "curiosity" over "certainty." While I'm sure Amanda and I don't agree on every tactic, this was a fascinating conversation and I truly appreciate the work she is doing to capture those who need the freedom to explore and the space to come back when they are ready. Thu, 28 Oct 2021 - 102 - Ashley Lande: Christian Artist and Post-Psychedelic
When I read an article titled "Acidhead: God Took Me Higher" by Ashley Lande, I was totally enthralled. I hardly ever take the time to read an essay all the way through -- especially a long one. But Ashley's beautiful writing and incredible story drew me in. I immediately found her on social media and invited her on for this episode of the podcast. I love her story so much. She came from a life of drugs and partying -- and Jesus radically transformed both she and her husband. In this interview, Ashley gives me all the details how she got into using drugs and psychedelics, and how one day, God came crashing in. It's true -- the high of an authentic relationship with Jesus beats the high of any drug. Ashley knows. It's been years since she's done drugs, but her story is powerful. Read the article. Wed, 13 Oct 2021 - 101 - Jackie Aviles: Momma Cancer Warrior and Hope Coach
Jackie Aviles is one of my favorite new online friends. I began following her last year, but it took months to realize she had overcome an insane battle against cancer as the mother of two young children. She recently hit 5 years in remission and the way she tells this story had me in tears. Jackie is a "Hope Coach" with Go and Tell Gals, a writer working on her first book, and a pastor's wife at Christ Fellowship Church in Miami. Listening to this conversation, you'll be struck by Jackie's unshakable faith during one of the scariest times of her life, when she had to tell her little boys that she might soon be going to heaven. She had to grapple with that reality and it was certainly something that could have happened. By God's grace, she is alive and healthy today -- using her personal story as a way to bring hope and God's Truth to women around the nation. I was so honored to speak with Jackie -- and so incredibly encouraged by what she shared. You will feel empowered and inspired after hearing this episode. Tue, 28 Sep 2021 - 100 - Amy Gannett: Theology is For Everyone
Amy Gannett does a lot of things. Being a church planter with her husband is no small task, but in addition to that -- she's an entrepreneur, Bible teacher, online leader and Mom to 1-year-old Emerson. I first discovered Amy through her company, Tiny Theologians, which makes theology cards for young children. You've heard me mention it before on the podcast because I love teaching my kids this stuff early. Amy has quickly become one of my favorite people to follow, precisely because she is so focused on injecting the deep things of God into everyday life. I recently signed up for her Bible Study membership, which includes all kinds of Bible studies with fellow, amazing female Bible teachers. I love Amy's commitment to learning and teaching the Word well, through her weekly "Theology Thursdays" videos on Instagram, monthly newsletter and -- very exciting -- her NEW BOOK, which releases very soon! "Fix Your Eyes: How Our Study of God Shapes Our Worship Of Him" (I pre-ordered!). Enjoy her wisdom in this episode and be inspired to dig into God's Word as you never have. Tue, 07 Sep 2021 - 99 - Kristen Young: Biblical Living & Motherhood on Instagram
Kristen Young is a lot of fun, but she's also got a lot to say about things that matter. By her own description, she's a "homemaker and a truth speaker" who is wants to encourage Christ followers to live out their faith boldly. She's a mom of 3 (and pregnant with #4) and has made a name for herself on Instagram in the past year. When Reels became popular, Kristen realized she had knack for capturing hard truths in short, simple statements inside of eye-catching reels. She expounds on the short messages in the caption and sometimes does longer videos and posts for more explanation. Kristen has spoken out about everything from mandated vaccines to masks to progressive Christianity. In this chat, she talks about how she was resistant to gettin involved in such sticky subjects, but felt God's call to speak out. After taking some time off of IG in late 2020, she heeded that calling and started making reels and videos as the ideas came to her. I've enjoyed her content and couldn't wait to hear what was behind her passion! Tue, 17 Aug 2021 - 98 - Phylicia Masonheimer: Every Woman a Theologian
In this episode of the podcast, I speak with Phylicia Masonheimer, an author and teacher I have come to love and respect so much in the past year. Phylicia makes learning the Bible and understanding hard issues according to a Biblical worldview accessible to everyone. She's a mom of three young kids who has written several books, including "Stop Calling Me Beautiful" and offers multiple online courses in theology basics and leadership. She hosts the popular "Verity" podcast and runs her business, "Every Woman a Theologian" with her husband and a small team of staff. I'm always fascinated at how much Phylicia does, but it's clear this is her calling and she's doing such a service for the everyday woman who wants to know God on a deeper level, but doesn't have time or calling for seminary. In this conversation, we talk a bit about how Phylicia stays balanced, taking regular month-long social media breaks and trusting in God to sustain her ministry as she cares for her family and her whole body health. There are so many gems of wisdom in this episode, including the conversation we have about the Church, why it matters and what Phylicia has to say to those who have been hurt or are thinking they don't need to church to have a thriving relationship with God. Tue, 03 Aug 2021 - 97 - Leah Wacek: Choosing a Wildly Generous Life
Ten years ago, Leah Wacek's pastor made a bold statement: You can't out-give God. She and her family put those audacious words to the test. They soon discovered the truth in the statement. "Each time we gave what seemed sacrificial," writes Leah, "We saw the gift somehow make its way back to us." It started with financial giving, but for their family, it's become a mission to build generosity into every part of their lives. From dedicating family days with her kids to service projects to saving money for fun, extravagant giving (like purchasing something someone in their community really needs), Leah has made generosity the focus of her faith and life. Her blog is called "A Generous Life" and she regularly gives away books, sticks $20 bills inside boxes of formula at the grocery store and makes a point to go above and beyond for those around her. It's not about how much you have, but what you do with what you've been blessed with. I also love that part of her giving method is time-related. They don't just give away money, but also DAYS -- because time and presence matter deeply as well. Her website is packed with helpful blog posts that can help you and your family start thinking generously on a daily basis. Highly recommend a listen and following her on Instagram! Tue, 20 Jul 2021 - 96 - Rachel Pieh Jones: How Muslim Friends Led me Closer to Jesus
Rachel Pieh Jones has lived overseas for two decades -- and in Djbouti no less. She's American, but these days, more familiar with life in a very different place. In her new book, "Pillars: How Muslim Friends Led Me Closer to Jesus," she talks about all she has learned. It was neat to speak with Rachel on IG Live from around the world and to hear what her experiences have meant to her as a Christian. She is not a missionary, but has still had the opportunity to live out her faith and connect meaningfully with the many Muslim friends around her. So often, we see the meaningful religious rituals demonstrated in religions like Islam, yet don't have or activate similar kinds of rituals in our own lives. How could our faith grow were we to be as dedicated to Jesus as some are to their own faith? Rachel -- who is an incredible writer -- has learned a lot and we can all benefit from her wisdom. You can catch my first interview with Rachel (from March 2020) here, where we discuss her fascinating book, "Stronger Than Death." Michelle is a single mom of three and she believes that every single mom can discover a life of peace, power, and purpose, right in the middle of what God is carrying them through. She felt called to minister to women like herself and is providing such an important service. We often hear how the Church doesn't cater well enough to single moms or nontraditional families. We must do better and we can follow the lead of people like Michelle. Even if you are not a single mom, you can learn so much about how to help those in your community. We talk about the incredible love Kim has found for Edens birth mom and how it’s showed her how much God loves us. We also talk about her experience leaving a church and a denomination after a lifetime...her family’s path toward *very* small church in the living room of friends and how COVID gave them the chance to re-evaluate what they wanted and needed in their church life. Tue, 11 May 2021 - 92 - Claire Culwell: An Abortion Survivor's Story
Claire Culwell is an abortion survivor. She was adopted as a baby and grew up with an incredible, loving family. As an adult, she was inspired to find her birth mother. Soon after that meeting, her birth mother revealed something shocking: she had nearly been aborted. Pregnant at 13, Claire's mother was unknowingly carrying twins. When she had an abortion, the procedure took the life of only one baby. In this episode, you'll hear for the child that survived. In her new book, "Survivor: An Abortion Survivor's Surprising Story of Choosing Forgiveness and Finding Redemption," Claire tells her beautiful story. I was lucky enough to be able to write a review of this book for Christianity Today this month as well! I absolutely loved speaking with Claire and I don't think you'll find anyone with a more beautiful heart. Her grace and perspective on her life and her birth mom are to be admired. Tue, 13 Apr 2021 - 90 - Michelle Cowan: How MOPS is Ministering to Moms
MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) has been around for nearly 50 years and it has been such an important ministry to moms of little ones over the years. MOPS partners with local churches to bring moms together for fellowship, food and ministry -- usually while they get a few hours of childcare thrown in! Michelle Cowan started worked with MOPS just as COVID begin and has been part of the incredible adaptation the past year required. Despite the struggle of meeting in person, the program really took off online -- creating "Mama Meetup Groups" by topic and geography, as well as launching a few other new initiatives. In this conversation, Michelle shares her passion for getting the Gospel to moms. We talk about the unique ministry of reaching women who may be unchurched or dechurched in a way that isn't pushy or unhelpful. It's sometimes tough to reach demographics that aren't specifically looking for faith resources, but MOPS helps care for larger needs and in turn, can present Jesus to women in that way. I have been involved in MOPS on and off since my first baby was 4 months old -- and certainly gotten a lot of out of the fellowship and community it provided me! In the second portion of the interview, we pivot to hearing about her incredible love story, how she met her husband, who is a quadriplegic and the story fo their son's adoption. Dana has never known her husband without his disability, but an 8-year friendship and long distance relationship eventually turned into marriage! Their faith has guided them through it all. You don't want to miss the stories of how God moved in this relationship and the way He showed up for Dana during the adoption process of her son, now two and a half. Thu, 25 Feb 2021 - 87 - Devi Abraham: Untangling Sexual Ethics for a New Generation of Christians
*Please note: We had some connection issues, so even after editing, there are several breaks in the audio, but I do not think it affects the convo much! Devi Abraham is a freelance writer, co-host of "Where Do We Go" podcast and mom of two living in Australia. Despite living so far away from me here in the United States, Australia is part of Western Christianity and she also grew up in a missionary family. Devi has a lot of fresh thoughts on things like politics, race and culture. Her podcast description is "untangling sexual ethics for a new generation of Christians," You can imagine how that caught my attention -- and I promptly binged several episodes! She and her co-host, Jessica Van Der Wyngaard (who created the documentary film "I Survived I Kissed Dating Goodbye" about and with infamous author Joshua Harris) talk about all things human sexuality and break down some of the things the Church or Christian culture may have done wrong in the past. She also writes about motherhood and is just a delight fo a person to speak with! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Thu, 11 Feb 2021 - 86 - Ellie Sanazaro: Choosing to Be a Special Needs Mom
In the latest episode of the "Worth Your Time" podcast, I speak with Ellie Sanazaro, the author of a new children's book, Image Bearer Book. When Ellie was pregnant with her first child, she was told her baby had a chromosomal abnormality similar to Down Syndrome. She and her husband prepared to welcome a baby with special needs. After Rosalie was born, they found out the prenatal tests has been wrong. And yet, Ellie felt God had prepared her heart to be a mom to s child with special needs. Within a few years, she had had another baby and adopted a little boy with Down Syndrome named Finn (who is adorable!). This beautiful story led her to write this book, featuring children with all kinds of special needs. Don't miss Ellie's story here -- and be sure to pre-order her book now (I immediately bought 2 copies!). It has such an important, special message we can all teach our children! Kaitlyn Schiess is a student at Dallas Theological Seminary and the author of "The Liturgy of Politics" -- a book that couldn't be more timely! The wisdom in these pages is endless, which is why I was so excited to speak with her about a topic I am so passionate about. In this interview: Why it's important to be very intentional about what you read/watch/listen to daily (and what questions to ask yourself about that) How the hyper-focus on "Jesus and me" relationships over community purpose has been a detriment to the faith What does evangelical mean and how did last week's riot at the Capitol reflect on American Christians? What does it mean to be taking actions now that have a truly heavenly, lasting purpose? Tue, 12 Jan 2021 - 84 - Single Moms and the Church: Jennifer Maggio's Important Ministry
Jennifer Maggio first became a single mom at the age of 17 years old. She had another child two years later and struggled as a young mom seeking guidance and support. She had been through trauma as a child and wasn't sure where to find what she needed. Though she left the Church for some time, her faith eventually led her back to a community of believers. Ultimately, she realized there was something missing: a ministry or support group for single moms. The vast majority fo single parent households in the United States are led by Moms and 67% or more of those families do not attend church. There are both logistical and personal reasons for this high number, but Jennifer knew there was so much women could gain from faithfully meeting with women who could understand their lives. Life of a Single Mom ministries began with a small group of women at her church and quickly grew to a huge group of women -- and Jennifer realized she was on to something. Now, this ministry has served over 400,000 women in the past 10 years! This ministry is so very important today, at a time when there are more single moms than ever before. The Church should be the one stepping up to ensure they know they are cared for, loved and supported. Join this live "Worth Your Time" video podcast episode with author and editor of Fathom Magazine, Rachel Welcher. Rachel just published an incredible book: "Talking Back to Purity Culture." This book spoke to me is SO many ways. I grew up in the thick of purity culture and have suffered a lot of damage thanks to the misguided lessons I internalized as a teenager. From sexual purity youth rock conferences to purity rings and awful lies, we talk about it all in this interview. Rachel has interviewed so many women, and had her own experience with the deception of purity culture. We talk about how you talk with your kids, how to deal with Church hurt, how Christians made sex and marriage an idol. Anyone who grew up in the church will appreciate this conversation. Tue, 17 Nov 2020 - 81 - God in the Midst of Childhood Cancer: Mom and Writer Angelise Schrader
Join me for a conversation with my friend Angelise Schrader, a writer and mom of almost 3 -- her third is due in a few weeks -- and also mother to a little boy battling cancer. Today, I speak with Angelise about her son's diagnosis at the age of 18 months, and the journey they've been on as the cancer has left and returned three times. As I've watched Angelise through this from afar online, I've been fascinated and inspired by her great faith in God to uphold her family. In this conversation, she reveals what it felt like to get that first diagnosis, how she manages her emotions each day and how her son inspires her with his strength and faith in God, as well. We also talk about handling decisions in marriage when you disagree, as well as Angelise's wholistic view of faith and life. She's working on publishing her first book, about making space for God to move in the hard moments, and I cannot wait to read it. Don't miss this beautiful conversation. Megan Westra is the author of "Born Again and Again: Jesus' Radical Call to Transformation" and has a Masters of Divinity. She's also an activists and advocate for the most vulnerable in our society. In this episode of the "Worth Your Time" podcast, we talked about: ✔️ Megan's transformation from growing up as a conservative Christian to transitioning to a more curious faith. ✔️ The importance of pursuing your faith with an open hand and not being afraid to ask hard questions. ✔️ The only very recent history of Christianity become so "personal" and indivualized, rather than public and communal -- something I didn't know until I read her book ✔️ Prioritizing those God prioritizes (the orphan, widow, stranger and impoverished -- and the iterations those Biblical references take now) and where, as Megan points out, God actually lives! ✔️ How the Church made us both turn marriage into idol and how we don't want that for our daughters. Mon, 12 Oct 2020 - 79 - Alexandra Hoover: Women, the Church and Holy Surrender
Alexandra Hoover is on fire right now. As an author, speaker, writer, ministry leader and Mom, she feels called by God to lead women with words and truth. Her regular writing on social media inspires women daily and cuts through the self-help lies to remind us we are only who we are through Jesus. She just announced a book deal for 2022 and recently released a devotional, as well as a regular IGLive show "Hard and Holy," as well as being a regular guest on other people's shows. I loved speaking with her about her passion for women and for the local church. We talk about why the imperfect church matters so much and how church hurt plays a part in keeping people away. What's the difference between the big C church and the little c church & what should people think about? She's been parenting through COVID in an area that is still completely virtual so working full time, writing and parenting three kids has been a stressful time. Christie Dondero Bettwy is the Executive Director of Rock Recovery, a Christian organization that helps men and women find freedom from eating disorders for a lifetime. I've been a supporter of Rock Recovery for many years, because I know how important it is to find freedom from an eating disorder. I lived with one for over 10 years and never want anyone to feel like they can't overcome. In this conversation, Christie and I talk about our respective journies, how to get help, how to think about parenting in regards to EDs and the financial burden of treatment (it's a lot!), which is why organizations like Rock are such and important resource -- they have a sliding scale payment system and no one will be turned away. Tue, 08 Sep 2020 - 77 - Laura Wifler: Co-Founder and Executive Director of Risen Motherhood
Laura Wifler is an author, podcaster and co-founder and Executive Director of Risen Motherhood. I chatted with her for this edition of the "Worth Your Time" podcast focused on Mommas. There's a lot of ground do cover in that topic, but we attempted to get to some of it! How can we apply to the Gospel to every aspect of our lives -- even the Bible doesn't have a verse specifically about potty training, temper tantrums or middle school woes? How can we approach our marriages with the right attitude and keep the larger pespective of God's redemption and forgiveness over our lives in the end? Laura's Godly wisdom was such a blessing to me today! I'm so inspired by she and her sister-in-law, Emily Jensen, and how they've built such a beautiful ministry. It's no wonder it's grown so quickly and become such a beloved resource for women acrosss the world. Wed, 26 Aug 2020 - 76 - Casper Ter Kuile: The Power of Community + Ritual
Casper Ter Kuile's new book, "The Power of Ritual: Turning Everyday Activities Into Soulful Practices," is so timely. He's been researching community, ritual and connection for years -- and his work has become so popular that it really demanded book form! In today's interview, we talk about how things like SoulCycle and CrossFit became sort of "religious" in their followings. As people have left traditional religion, they have sought other ways of connecting. Unfortunately, many people haven't found those communities, but Casper hops to reinvigorate the search for community and finding sacredness in everyday life. While I still believe the Church is the very best form of community, it certainly isn't the only place to find relationship and support structure. In a nation severely disconnected -- and suffering extreme mental health woes and loss of faith because of it -- the ideas Casper promotes are more important than ever. Throughout her life, Richella has struggle with comparison -- from appearance to achievements to personality traits. As an adult, she finally found a breakthrough and writes about the many cultural and spiritual myths so many women believe to their detriment. In today's interview, I chat with Richella about growing up with a rare skin condition that she felt set her apart, and how that contributed to her comparison mindset. We also talk about how she's dealt with the health conditions her children have endured and she was able to get through extremely tough moments as a Mom. Tue, 07 Jul 2020 - 74 - Mary DeMuth: The Church and Sexual Assault
Mary DeMuth has written over 40 books and her recent "We Too: How the Church Can Respond Redemptively to the Sexual Abuse Crisis" -- took a lot out of her. Mary is still healing from wounds of sexual abuse in her past, as she many likely will be for a lifetime. As the #MeToo movement traveled across the country several years ago, the #ChurchToo movement followed close behind. There is abuse in the Church, beyond what was previously known, and there are those who would protect rather than preserve justice. Mary is a leading voice in helping churches choose differently and act justly. Churches have begun to change and address these things more recently, but it's simply not enough. There's a lot going on in the world but sexual assault and abuse is rampant and the time is always right for conversation. Mary's personal story is heartbreaking, but her personal redemption and heart for other victims is empowering. This work matters and I was privileged to have the opportunity to speak with her. Tue, 23 Jun 2020 - 73 - Sharon Hodde Miller: God Calls us to Use Our Voices
My episode today is with Sharon Hodde Miller, author, speaker, church planter, mom -- and a very wise soul in my opinion. In Sharon's latest book, "Nice," she covers the concept of Christian "niceness" and how we've confused being "nice" with being a Christ follower. This episode was recorded just before COVID and definitely before the recent racial justice protests in our country, but I found so much of it extremely relevant to the current conversation. We have a responsibility as Christians to speak out for justice. We discuss how Jesus approach situations like the ones we are seeing today. It always helps to consider the age old question: What would Jesus do? Sharon enlightens me on why she values the Church s much -- and why it's so important for Christians to cherish it to -- even when they've been hurt or disappointed by it. K.J. Ramsey is a writer, therapist and person who suffers from chronic pain. In her new book, "This Too Shall Last," K.J. writes about living with faith in the midst of pain that may not end. She told me one of the worst things those suffering hear from well-meaning loved ones is, "This too shall pass." Thus, the name of her book. And, well, sometimes things don't. In today's interview, I speak with her about living with her condition for over a decade, how she manages and what she does to remember God's goodness in the midst of it. K.J. writes and speaks about the way community and pain are linked -- and how our brains process struggles of all kinds. Tue, 12 May 2020 - 70 - Mark Sayers: The Church Then, Now and Beyond (BONUS)
Mark Sayers is a renowned author, pastor and speaker -- and I was so excited to get an interview with him for a bonus episode this week. His books, specifically "Disappearing Church" and "Reappearing Church," completely blew my mind with their incredible insight and analysis on the Western Christian church, post-Christian culture and what the history of the Church reveals about how God is moving RIGHT NOW. Mark's work came blasting into crazy relevancy with COVID-19 because he writes so beautifully about how God works in tragedy, crisis, transition and change -- all things we are experiencing worldwide right now. This episode is relevant to COVID, but also important for anyone who cares about faith, the future of the Church and wants some good news about what God's doing in the West, despite what the headlines or doomsday statistics may say. His books inspired my recent Wall Street Journal op/ed and his work has influenced the aim I'm taking in my next book. Jennifer Allwood is one of the most practical, inspirational women I've ever spoken to. Today, she teaches thousands of women how to get their businesses off the ground, and keeps God front and center. There are a lot of business coaches these days, but Jennifer's focus on faith sets her apart from the masses. She's teaching women how to make money online by working smarter, not harder, and tapping into their God-given gifts. With a focus on intention, prayer, wisdom and goal setting, Jennifer is a master of her craft. Her new book, "Fear Is Not the Boss of You" is perfect for any woman with a dream and a laptop. Wed, 22 Apr 2020 - 67 - Alyson Premo: Founder of Sober Mom Tribe
Alyson Premo found herself a single mom at rock bottom. She knew she had to stop drinking. And then, she knew she had to help other moms stop too. Today I speak with Alyson, the founder of Sober Mom Tribe, about her journey into and out of alcoholism. Today, Alyson is free from the chains of alcohol and works with hundreds of women across the country to become sober and re-create their lives without alcohol. Alyson created Sober Mom Tribe after realizing there weren't a ton of resources out there specifically for moms in recovery. Many sobriety programs and books are written by the childless or single, but moms face very unique challenges and they need a specific kind of support. I enjoyed speaking with Alyson and learning some of her tips for remaining calm and staying sober in the face of struggles, including right now during the Coronavirus pandemic. I recently gave up drinking and have found so many fabulous women and moms like Alyson who are empowering people to choose something better for their lives. You'll be amazed by her story. Tue, 14 Apr 2020 - 66 - BONUS EPISODE: Mary Katharine Ham: You Can Become the Parent You Need to Be
I spoke with with MaryKatharine Ham about parenting in crisis -- something she knows all too well. When Mary Katharine was 7 months pregnant and raising a 2-year-old, her husband, Jake, was tragically killed in a bicycling accident. In an instant, she was forced to become the parent she never thought she'd have to be. She resolved to be resilient and face life's challenges with goals in mind, hope at front of mind. She realized that many people are facing a similar, yet less tragic, dilemma right now. They don't believe they are the parent who can do this -- but they can. Her thoughts evolved into an IG video, then to a wonderful piece in The Atlantic called: "It's Okay to Be a Different Kind of Parent During a Pandemic:" https://www.theatlantic.com/…/what-losing-my-husban…/609607/ Take a listen to the invaluable lessons Mary Katharine shares with me here. Fri, 10 Apr 2020 - 65 - Lauren McAfee: Adoption, Cancer and Trusting God Through It All
Lauren Green McAfee has an infectious laugh and is so easy to talk to. You'd never guess the turmoil she's been through in the past year. The grand-daughter of David Green, the founder of Hobby Lobby, she was born into an incredible family. But when she and her husband decided to start a family, things didn't go as planned. They began with the process of adoption, having no idea it would take 7 years to meet their daughter. After so many years of dealing with the adoption process, they finally brought their daughter, Zion, home. Shockingly, within weeks, they discovered Zion had a rare, childhood cancer that would require immediate attention. Thankfully, Zion is now in remission, but the experience was shocking, scary and a whirlwind for Lauren, who has kept her spirits high and her faith in God's plan in tact. Today we talk about that whole journey, as well as the book Lauren wrote with her husband (they are both getting Ph.D's right now!) about the Bible and why people might need to give it another chance! Tue, 31 Mar 2020 - 64 - Out of Africa: Rachel Pieh Jones' Fascinating Life in Djbouti
Rachel Pieh Jones has a very cool life -- and it's almost hard to believe. The mom of three moved to Somalia years ago with her husband and three-year-old twins, for her husband's job at a university. Soon after, the family moved to Djbouti and Rachel gave birth to her third child in a pretty dangerous scenario where no healthcare would be available if anything went wrong. She ended up writing about that birthing experience for the New York Times and has since made a long, happy life in the Third World. From the Horn of Africa, Rachel has written an incredible book, run the Somalia marathon and started a running club for girls to encourage them to stay in school. She's raised her children and offered up valuable perspective on American Christianity and life overseas in publications like Christianity Today, Deadspin, Runner's World and more. In this interview, we talk about raising Third World kids, what it was like to write about the "Mother Theresa" of Somalia, Annalena Tonelli -- an incredible, Catholic woman who gave her life for impoverished Muslims. Rachel mentions, almost as a side note, that she is battling a non-aggressive cancer and honestly, that section of our conversation may have been the most inspiring of all to me. Tue, 17 Mar 2020 - 63 - Gracy Olmstead is the Journalist We Need
Gracy Olmstead is a beautiful writer, her pieces published regularly in the New York Times and many others. As someone who ingests thousands of words per week, I make a point never to miss hers. She's writes about culture, faith, politics, policy, farming, food and more -- and does so with a voice all her own. Her pieces are often focused on compromise, human dignity and life and she has a knack for luring in both sides of an issue and helping them hear one another. So important! Gracy is the mom of two little girls and grew up in rural Idaho. She's now in Virginia, where she gardens, bakes, writes and stays at home with her girls. In today's interview, we talk about the freelance writing lie and her process for coming up with ideas, as well as that tough mom-life balance when you are home with your kids and working. I loved what she had to say about why she loves working with the earth in gardening and how she approaches ideas about writing with such reverence. She wants every piece to be extremely thoughtful and honoring of the topic at hand, which usually means no breathless op/es within 24 hours of breaking news ;) She's got a new book coming out and recently started an amazing monthly newsletter that writers, book and culture lovers will want to subscribe too. Gracy counts writers she's loves to follow: Wendell Berry, Ross Douthat, Michael Brenda Dougherty, Elizabeth Bruenig, Emma Green & others. It's a passion God put on her heart years go, in childhood, and she was just waiting for the opportunity to go for it. She met an incredible man, married him and the two set out on their foster journey. They even signed up to take on kids with significant psychological issues, those cases that not everyone might be willing to take on, She's an incredible advocate and a humble servant of Jesus. In the midst of motherhood, Manda is also thriving as a writer, speaker and leader. She recently came out with a devotional, "Space" and is working on her first full-length book. She has a couple of life mantras, including "Impressing is Exhausting" and "Get Too Attached" (in reference to being a foster parent). Honestly, it was so refreshing to speak with someone just letting God take the lead in life. She's got a platform, readers and followers, but Manda's heart is humble and pure. It's hard not to be inspired by the way she lives her life and respect the way she honestly tackles the tough questions that come with fostering and living life as we are called to as Christians. Build a longer table, she says. I'm in. Tue, 18 Feb 2020 - 61 - Krish O'Mara Vignarajah: President & CEO, Lutheran Immigration & Refugee Service
Krish O'Mara Vignarajah is one impressive -- and gracious -- lady. She's the President & CEO of Lutheran Immigration & Refugee Service (LIRS) and has been working hard during our country's recent immigration struggles. Prior to this position, Krish ran for Governor of Maryland and was Policy Director for First Lady Michelle Obama -- very cool! I get her to answer a few questions about working with Michelle in this interview :) I first encountered Krish while researching a piece I wrote on families in the immigration crisis for the Washington Post. I so enjoyed chatting with her that I knew I wanted to have her on the podcast right away! She has a lot of important insight on history and current immigration policy and how it's affecting those crossing the border. Hit up the interview around 20 minutes to hear Krish tick off some VERY important info. about the immigration crisis, myths people believe and why we all need to be invested in this. She's a toddler mom, like many us are -- or have been -- and I really resonated with her on the professional and mom life balance. Her passion, intelligence and mission are incredibly inspiring and I was so grateful to speak with her for this episode. Tue, 04 Feb 2020 - 60 - Rachel Barkley: Fighting a Spinal Tumor with a Newborn
I never expected to be interviewing Rachel Barkley about one of the scariest moments of her life. Three weeks after giving birth to her first baby, Rachel woke up unable to feel her leg. In a whirlwind of events, she was soon rushed into surgery in attempt to remove a massive spinal tumor that had been growing for years. Not knowing if the tumor was cancerous or if doctors would be able to get it out, she went into surgery with the understanding of how grave the worst case scenario really was. Throughout it all, Rachel relied on her faith in God to get her through -- and the way she's handled it all has been nothing short of amazing. Thankfully, she came out of surgery with the best possible outcome, but that still meant a very long road ahead -- learning of how to walk again, regain function in other parts of her body and spending months in an in-patient rehab facility. All the while, she has a newborn baby Hudson who needed his Momma. In today's interview, I speak with Rachel about every part of her journey until today. She's still recovering and has a long way to go, but is thankful for the unexpected progress she's made. Even the doctors are amazed. It was an honor to hear Rachel's story and I know it's going to provide hope for others who are going through a dark time. Tue, 21 Jan 2020 - 59 - Nancy French: Not Your Average New York Times Best-Selling Author
Nancy French is many things: writer, mother, wife, swimmer, survivor of sexual abuse. She's cultivated an incredible career as a ghostwriter of books for celebrities and political figures alike -- and written her own books, as well. Most recently, she wrote the biography of Alice Marie Johnson, the woman in prison for a non-violent drug offense -- famous for being released from prison due to advocacy from Kim Kardashian. Nancy interviewed Kim, who wrote the foreword of the book, as well. She's mom to three great kids -- one by adoption -- and wife to David French, a highly respected faith and culture writer who nearly ran for President on the Independent ticket in 2016. How did that play out for them? You'll find out. In today's interview, I speak with Nancy about everything from her young romance with David ( their love story that she recently wrote about in the Washington Post!) to adopting their daughter and what it was like that time she almost became a potential First Lady. We also talk about why she decided to speak out against President Donald Trump in 2016, revealing devastating sexual abuse she endured as a child. How did 2016 change her? We discuss and Nancy is funny, gracious and kind in the thoughts she conveys. Connect with Nancy: Twitter Facebook Instagram PSST: Wanna get new episodes when they drop? Tue, 07 Jan 2020 - 58 - Pastor & Mom of 4: Melanie Lynam on Miracles and More
Pastor and mom of 4 Melanie Lynam lives in Australia and has a pretty amazing story. She felt the call to ministry as a teenager and just always knew that's what God wanted her to do with her life. In this episode, we talk about her journey towards that role, how she met her husband in a bit of an unexpected twist and the miraculous story of her baby Isabella's path to life. When you hear this story, you'll hardly believe it -- but wow, what a testament to Melanie's faith and God's provision in such an uncertain time. We also talk today about how there are some denominations that don't believe in female pastors. Why is that? Melanie fills us in on her thoughts. We chat a little about Melanie's own journey into podcasting (there aren't as many of them Down Under!) and how she feels as she is about to give birth to her fourth baby! Wed, 18 Dec 2019 - 57 - Love Your Neighbor: Shannan Martin’s Messy, Beautiful Life
Today’s episode of “Worth Your Time” is a real treat. I was honored when writer Shannan Martin agreed to speak with me, after becoming a HUGE fan of her writing. Her two books — both incredible and worth buying — are “Falling Free: Rescued From the Life I Always Wanted” and “The Ministry of Ordinary Places” will convict you to your core the moment you crack them open. Shannan’s story of building the life she wanted, complete with monetary security, good jobs, a great home, neighborhood and friends was turned upside down when she her husband Corey tuned into God’s call on their lives. Shannan says: It’s worth looking at the world through the lens of Jesus, that we can see beauty in hard places and we can see interruptions as our redemption. They did a 180, moving to a place they never expected with their three children and striking up relationships with the most unlikely folks. They also ended up adopting their 4th child, a 19-year-old named Robert who brought unexpected blessing and joy to their new lives. Shannan’s life is one example of how we can live a bit more like Jesus did here on earth. It’s a life that includes less money, lots of interruptions, reams of grace, humility you never thought you could muster and a true dependence on God for whatever may come with each day. I was just as inspired and moved by hearing her in real life as I have been reading the words in her books. She’s got plenty to teach us all, but you can tell she doesn’t hold herself in any kind of high regard. She’s just listening to God and trying to love the people around her. It really is that simple. Tue, 10 Dec 2019 - 56 - Champion for Life: Lauren Enriquez of the Human Coalition
Lauren Enriquez has dedicated her life to the pro-life movement, working first with Students for Life and now with the Human Coalition as a communications director. In today’s episode, I speak this love, passionate and articulate mother of four littles, about why she care so deeply about transforming our culture of death into a culture of life. She’s got some really important things to say — and a few of them might be new information to listeners. I encourage you to listen with an open mind, even if you don’t consider yourself pro-life. I was a lot more talkative than normal in this episode, but wanted to have a truly open, honest conversation about an issue I care deeply about as well. Enjoy this great chat with Lauren! Tue, 03 Dec 2019 - 55 - Rita Soronen: President & CEO, Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption
Rita Soronen has been working on behalf of vulnerable children for decades and has been doing so for the Dave Thomas Foundation for many of those years. Today I spoke with her about why the work DTFA does is *so* vital right now — and what moves her to dedicate her life to this cause. You’ve heard of Dave Thomas, the founder of Wendy’s restaurant? What you may not know is that he left a way more important legacy than hamburger’s when he died. The Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption is the only public nonprofit charity in the United States that is focused exclusively on foster care adoption. It’s National Adoption Month and the reason I was so pumped to speak with Rita is because DTFA has found a way to get older kids adopted out of foster care at higher rates than in the past. This is an incredible accomplishment and so important for these kids, who too often linger in the system until adulthood, only to then suffer awful hardships like addiction, homelessness, depression and more. To move the needle for this demographic is a massive accomplishment and we need to get the message out there. Through their “Wendy’s Wonderful Kids” program, they are truly making a difference. Listen in and see how you can be a part of this important change. Tue, 19 Nov 2019 - 54 - Bobbi McCormick: Letting God Lead When Life Doesn’t Go As Planned
Bobbi McCormick is such a breath of fresh air! She lives up to her online persona, bringing joy and optimism into our conversation. We met years ago through the blogging world and I’ve followed her story through infertility, foster care, adoption and more. I loved Bobbi’s perspective about “getting comfortable with being uncomfortable” and truly following God’s lead in those moments when we have no idea what to do. She’s fresh off of adopting her second child and deep into a “debt free by 40” plan a la Dave Ramsay. Bobbi is a fitness instructor with Revelation Wellness, marathon runner, preschool teacher and an inspiration through it all. In today’s conversation, we discuss what it was like to discover infertility, to walk through adoption and put her faith in God without knowing what was next. Tue, 12 Nov 2019 - 53 - Jess Ekstrom: CEO & Founder of ‘Headbands of Hope’ Paves the Way for Women
Jess Ekstrom’s new book, “Chasing the Bright Side” is the perfect title for her personality. Though we haven’t met in person, she radiates light in conversation and I’ve learned so much from her online course helping women learn to hone their speaking skills. Jess started an amazing company, “Headbands of Hope” when she was in college and it’s still thriving today, bringing style to many and plenty of headbands for children suffering from cancer. She’s got an amazing entrepreneurial story in today’s episode — one that makes you wonder how she had the gumption to keep going. But she did and the world is better for it. Since founding her company, Jess has become a sought after speaker on the conference circuit. She’s built a career out of professional speaking jobs and is now training other women to do the same. I learned from Jess that people are dying to get more female speakers and we’ve got a gap to fill, friends. We’ve also got money to make in doing so, so don’t sell yourself short! I really just enjoyed chatting with Jess today. She’s fun, genuine and truly encouraged me to keep reaching for those speaking goals I have. Tue, 05 Nov 2019 - 52 - Stephanie Lobdell: Where is God in the Everyday Struggle?
Today’s interview got me thinking really hard. I wasn’t expecting to come with such profound revelations after speaking with author and pastor Stephanie Lobdell, but I surely did. You can see how part of that played out in my recent (vulnerability alert) Instagram post here. Stephanie’s book, “Signs of Life: Resurrecting Hope out of Ordinary Losses” tackles some tough issues. While we love a good redemption story, most of us are not in the middle of extreme life traumas 24 hours a day. Most of us are dealing with the everyday battles: depression, negativity, infertility, self-image, busy-ness, stress, anxiety — you name it. It’s nice to celebrate the Resurrection at Easter, but how about remembering why it matters everyday? Stephanie admits her book doesn’t necessarily cover the great tragedies of life, but the struggles that everyone can relate to. How do we get through when it feels so difficult? She gets honest about her battle with depression and her journey towards ministry leadership. I really appreciated Stephanie’s perspective and walked away with a load of things to consider. Tue, 29 Oct 2019 - 51 - Our Call to Love Immigrants & Refugees Well: Briana Stensrud of ‘Welcome’
There’s a tide turning in the United States. It’s not as loud as partisan media voices blasting from the TV, but it matters more. Briana Stensrud is helping make way for Christian women to embrace what it means to be fully pro-life, specifically as it relates to welcoming immigrants and refugees. She helps lead Welcome, a community of women committed to creating a movement of Christ-like welcome in our country. It all goes back to loving the sojourner, Biblical hospitality, believing in the Imago Dei (every human created in God’s image), our call to be peacemakers and to continually invite the orphan, widow, marginalized and oppressed into love and safety. It was interesting speaking with Briana about her work within the traditional pro-life space as it relates to ending abortion, and seeing how she transitioned to focusing on a larger, comprehensive pro-life ethic. I loved when she said, “You cannot scripturally justify prioritizing one vulnerable population over another.” She has a Masters in Biblical and Theological studies from Dallas Theological Seminary so the woman knows what she’s talking about when it comes to scripture. Tue, 22 Oct 2019 - 50 - A Cancer Warrior’s Legacy: Kelly Trent on Her Son Tyler’s Life
There are some interviews that make you step back and take a deep breath. That’s how I felt before picking up the phone to speak with Kelly Trent, the mother of Tyler Trent — a young man many became familiar with in 2018 when his battle with cancer went public. It wasn’t his plan to make it so, but his invigorating spirit and zest for life couldn’t be contained. Tyler became known as a Purdue superfan, as he decked out for Purdue football games even as he was extremely sick with Osteosarcoma. The team took notice of him — but it wasn’t just the fandom. Tyler’s faith was a tangible part of his life, establishing his hope in something greater than this world. When he received a second diagnosis of cancer after being in remission for two years, he decided this time around would be worth something. It was then he began a journey towards raising millions for cancer research, offering hope for others battling this awful disease and finding strength and resilience in the people around him, God and the things he loved most in life. To say it was a privilege to speak with the incredible woman who raised Tyler would be an understatement. Kelly took the time to share her heart with me, walk listeners through Tyler’s cancer journey and talk to us about what it means even though he ultimately lost is life in early 2019. It can be hard to comprehend how someone walks through the sickness and death of a child. It can be hard to understand how they continue to rely on God when everything feels like its falling apart. Listen is as Kelly talks about how her family — and Tyler — accomplished this even as death stood at their door. Tue, 15 Oct 2019 - 49 - Achieving Impossible Dreams: The Atlantic’s Elaina Plott On the Record
Elaina Plott is the White House Correspondent for one of the best magazines in the country, The Atlantic. She’s a fantastic writer with the right sense of curiosity and detail to capture the unique essence of a story or pen a brilliant profile. At only 26, she’s got bylines in places you may only dream of (GQ, Harpers Bazaar, etc.) and now finds herself on staff at a magazine freelancers are dying to get a their names inside of. She joins brilliant journalists from the past 100+ years in putting together this monthly publication covering politics, culture and humanity from the most interesting, thoughtful angles you will find. I was fortunate enough to work with Elaina when we were both at National Review magazine and have followed her work ever since. It was incredible to speak with her today about her career trajectory, how her faith sustaints her, how she remains fair and balanced and some of her best-kept writing secrets. Tue, 08 Oct 2019 - 48 - Hospitality & Loving Others Well: Leslie Verner’s Beautiful Call
Hospitality is making a comeback — or perhaps really trending for the first time in America. I have caught the bug, being inspired to love my neighbors (both literal and stranger) as a way to show kindness and God’s love. Leslie Verner has taken it up a notch — living out a life of hospitality in beautiful ways — taking from things she learned living 5 years overseas in China and traveling the world. She’s not only tangibly living out love — by inviting refugee friends into her home, welcoming lonely mom friends to a group outing, making food and offering a place of rest to new church members (to name a few things) — she wrote about it all in her new book, “Invited: The Power of Hospitality an Age of Loneliness.” The book is full of simple stories of welcome and kindness, and offers statistics and anecdotes about hospitality around the world. I found myself surprised at multiple bits and revved to ensure I don’t allow anyone I meet to feel unseen. Leslie is a gorgeous writer — and I can’t say that about every book I read. If you can appreciate a beautiful sentence with words in all the right places, almost singing a song with the way it is written, you will totally indulge in this book. A mother of three young children, she also addresses how we can be there for others even when life is busy and chaotic. The reality is that we can’t afford not to be hospitable and there are a TON of ways to do it, things you probably don’t even realize. As Christians, I think this concept is one of the most important, especially as people become more isolated, depressed and lonely in a technological culture. Seriously, take some notes and get the book. Leslie and I also chat about writing, the creative process, finding time and what it means to feel called to be a writer. Tue, 01 Oct 2019 - 47 - Combatting the Lies Women Believe: Lisa Graft’s Inspiring Vision
Lisa Graft’s vision and enthusiasm for leading women is infectious. In the beginning of our conversation, I knew her only from her movement, I Am Mother of the Year. By the end, I realized her passion, drive and goals reach far beyond local moms — she has a message for women across the country. Aside from being amazed at everything Lisa accomplishes (and doing it while also prioritizing 9 hours of sleep!), I was incredibly moved by how she’s listened for and heard the voice of God guiding her in what she does. She’s recognized her calling and gone for it. This isn’t about building a following for her. It’s about pursuing a dream God put in her heart to reach women — often moms specifically — about the lies they too often believe about themselves. In a world where Instagram perfection can be difficult for those of scrolling through everyday, Lisa has a different approach. Amia Freeman had no idea when she went to an aerobics class many years ago, that it ultimately change her life in an incredible way. In the end, fitness helped her come to know God and get rid of the baggage she’d been carrying in her life for years. In today’s episode, we discuss her childhood growing up with an alcoholic father, the rough years of early motherhood and the way God works through our issues when we move our bodies. As Amia put it in a recent post: “Listen when you refuse to move your body you’ve decided to keep whatever is inside of you stuck.“ For years, Amia has been using and preaching the value and association of pairing fitness with faith. Then, she lost the use of her legs in a strange, stress-related incident related to some things she hadn’t overcome emotionally in her life. We talk about that and how she moved forward, walked again and then found Revelation Wellness, where she now works. It’s a pretty amazing story — and one that is certainly worth your time. Tue, 17 Sep 2019 - 45 - A Purpose-Filled Life: Nadine McGowan on Helping All Women Thrive
Nadine McGowan has energy, passion and drive I only wish I did. Two years into being a Mom, God gave her a vision of helping women find their purpose — and she followed that vision to the mountaintop without even knowing how she would would do it. The end result was the creation of Purposeful Living, INC (the INC actually stands for “in Christ!”), where women in the Indianapolis area can find support groups, networking events, empowerment meetings, life coaching and more, at no cost for the most part. Of course this means, PLINC is a non-profit that requires many volunteers and generous donations, which is all part of what God has provided for Nadine to live out this mission. In this episode, we discuss how Nadine was a trip to South Africa working with women there when she realized she needed to help women here when she got back. Women in the Hamilton County area aren’t physically poor, like those she met in South Africa, nor do they fit the “needy” stereotype you might expect a non-profit to serve. But, poverty comes mentally, emotionally and spiritually as well — and every woman can suffer in that way. I love what Nadine says here: “By serving this demographic, because they have resources, because they are educated, when they can get ‘on purpose,’ they can impact the world so much more…and get out and do what they’re called to do.” The materially privileged are those that have the means to make a huge world impact, but if they are off-kilter and unable to find their purpose, they may not be able to do everything their privilege would allow them to. We must serve everyone and Nadine has found this very specific, incredible purpose in serving this group. Tue, 10 Sep 2019 - 44 - Helen Raleigh: What It Means to Live the American Dream
It was honor to speak with Helen Raleigh for this week’s episode of the podcast. Helen is a immigrant to the United States from China. She came here with nothing but a dream of education and opportunity that her parents and grandparents never had. Her story is sure to inspire you. In this episode, I talk to Helen about some of the unbelievable abuses she and her family suffered under Communism — and about why she believes America still offers the greatest opportunity for success in the world. We discuss everything from China’s one-child policy to her thoughts on Presidential candidates presenting socialism as a viable option (and why she’s against it), as well as how she views white supremacy in this country today. She also tells about what’s going on in Hong Kong and why’s it’s so important we support the protestors there. Helen’s humble and hard-working roots are nothing but uplifting and full of hope. It was so incredible to get her honest take on issues. It was also a privilege to bring you this episode on behalf of the Steamboat Institute, where Helen and I first met. Rina Shah became a friend the moment I met her. We both have children ages 3 and 1 — and became moms after building our careers. It can be a hard transition, but we wouldn’t have it any other way. Rina is a powerhouse in all the ways: She’s built a business, a non-profit, help run a campaign and is serious about bringing more women into leadership positions in politics and business. She’s also passionate about diversifying the Republican Party — as a woman of Indian decent — and values conversation, moderation and ideas. She received some flack from pushing back against Trump 2016 and worked for the Independent candidate, Evan McMullin. We talk in this interview about valuing policies that work but keeping character in mind as well. She founded Women’s Public Leadership Network, something everyone should take note of! She has an incredible family story — of where her parents came from and why she claims the title of “conservative” — and it’s worth tuning in just for that. Enjoy this conversation with Rina Shah! What we talked about: * Women’s Public Leadership Network* Elevate PAC (Rep. Elise Stefanik’s group)* Right Now Women PAC* Catalyst* Love Your Enemies by Arthur Brooks* The Conservative Heart by Arthur Brooks* Condoleezza Rice answers question on race (VIDEO) Connect with Rina: * Twitter Learn more about your ad choices. Tue, 27 Aug 2019 - 42 - Rachael Denhollander Speaks: Justice Matters
Rachael Denhollander is a fierce light. That’s the first thing I thought after watching her testimony at the hearing against USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar, who was convicted of molesting hundreds of girls over decades. Then, I got an early copy of her new book, “How Much is a Girl Worth?” and dug into the full story behind how Rachael became the face of the scandal that finally put Nassar behind bars. I watched the HBO documentary, “Heart of Gold” and listened to the podcast, “Believed.” I saw Rachael speak at the Indiana National Prayer Breakfast and then, I got the opportunity to interview her for today’s episode. Without Rachael’s courage and determination to see justice served for the hundreds of girls abused by Larry Nassar, the man may still be perpetrating abuse. As you’ll hear and read, she did it for the girls Nassar abused, but also for the whole the concept of justice as a whole and the girls to come who will suffer. It’s not just about USA Gymnastics, but about “community protectionism” that exists within all kinds of organizational structures — churches, governments, families. The concept of justice has often been buried beneath important ideas like forgiveness and grace. Those things are certainly important, but in this situation, Rachael had to squarely focus on justice in order to ensure it would be rightly served. Her thoughts on this deserver far wider broadcasting than this podcast can offer, but I hope you’ll take them to heart as you listen. What We Talked About: * “How Much Is a Girl Worth?” book (don’t miss the children’s book version — “How Much is a Little Girl Worth?”)* Rachael’s victim-impact statement at trial Connect with Rachael: * Facebook* Twitter* Instagram Recent Episodes: * Surviving Infant Loss: Brooke Martin’s Beautiful Deliverance* Run Your Own Race: Trisha Lopez-Davis on Overcoming the Trials of Life* Pro-Life Feminism in Action: Destiny Herndon-De La Rosa on the Border Learn more about your ad choices.
