I'm pretty sure I'm in the minority of metalheads in that I don't like moshing. Sweaty shirtless men, pent-up testosterone, unresolved daddy issues; it's just not for me. Besides, the show is on the stage (assuming the particular band puts in the effort as far as energy and/or production), and it's rather hard to take it in while being shoved around by smelly man-children who may or may not have been hugged often enough in their early lives. But goddammit if we all don't love the same loud obnoxious music, and I think we can all drink/toke/high-five to that.

There's a lot of attention right now being given to old-guard hanging it up and announcing farewell tours, which is understandable, but I think it's also a symptom of some of the things holding metal back as an industry. Back in the eighties when the genre was a completely different business, the big-label architecture was designed for everything to rest on a few huge pillars ('tallica, Megadeth, Ozzy, etc.). But nowadays heavy music is much more diffuse stylistically and DIY business-wise, so it hurts the industry to rely on the fading big names rather than the underground. That's one of the main reasons I produce a heavy metal podcast that focuses exclusively on non major label bands, many of them purely independent; it's where the future is and these are the groups that need attention and opportunity, no bands that had their spotlight thirty years ago and already contributed their relevancy. Support the underground, because that's what metal is nowadays.

I mentioned last week something about the stronger showing of stoner metal and hard rock, genres I usually have at least one full segment of on each episode. Well, somehow I seem to have gone completely in the opposite direction this week; this is almost a uniformly brutal and vile collection of death, black, and doom metal. There is some breathing room though, with a set of very solid hazy-metal. Here we are at episode 8 of our regular heavy metal podcast, and it's quite a well-rounded one. Yes, I play a lot of Swedish music here on Another Metal Podcast, but I can't help it, most great metal seems to come from there. Have we figured that one out yet? We have made it to episode five of our heavy metal podcast without any serious bloodshed, bomb threats, or pregnancy scares, which I have to say is nothing short of a miracle (have you seen my less-than-disciplined review 'schedule'?). This one really does add some merit to our 'heavy metal from across the globe' tagline; we've got bands stretching from Portland to New Zealand, Croatia to Chile, Scotland to Costa Rica, and many more. It also stretches the genre gamut as well, with death, hardcore, doom, and some ample weirdness (I did mention Portland, right?). So buckle down, turn it up, and get some heavy metal culture in that brain!

This is also technically our first episode as a listener supported podcast, as AMP is now part of the Patreon crowdfunding platform.
