Take a step out of church (or keep avoiding it), and let's read this story with a different spin - Jesus feed 5,000 "powerless" people and we discuss a different path Jesus could have taken in become a religious/politcal figure in the first century Roman Empire. As always, you'll learn a little, maybe laugh a little.

Well, this is an interesting story, but it gets dark. Apologies in advance. This does not have a good ending.

Alright trying something new this year with a practice for answering questions, completely un-researched, but you get raw thoughts from Chris and Neil. the first question comes from our Co-Questioner Cynthia, asking us to retell our favorite Bible stories.

Last time we focused on Mary, now we're looking at what Joseph's options in the story. . . Let's face it, in this story, God put them in a REALLY difficult situation.

According to the Torah (the first five books of the Jewish Tanakh and the Christian Bible), If a woman is engaged to man and has sex with another man prior to the wedding, both the man and woman should be put to death. This makes things a bit tricky considering God came up with the plan of having an engaged carry the messiah to term in a culture that takes his law pretty seriously. I wonder which angel was tasked with doing a risk analysis of this plan.

This time we get into the WEEDS a bit. ahahaha. ugh . . .anyways, we cover another one of the parables in Matthew and chat it up about this weird passage, and continuously get off track and talk about Satan.

Sometimes we wonder how much you'll get out of this when we probably provide more questions than answers. . . BUT, maybe you will find a few entertaining stories, such as Chris talking about his son reading through the book of Revelation.

Christmas Special 2022 - Part 2 - Herod: When Killing toddlers isn't the worst thing you've done. by Beer and Bible

Okay, WAAAAAYYY late, but we thought this one was worth getting into and learning about. Join Chris on an alcohol soaked adventure through the history of KING HEROD. King Herod? Part of the Christmas story is the king over Judea at the time that tried MURDERING TODDLERS. Some how soldiers brandishing tools of death never make it into the lawn/mantel nativity scenes.

Another episode of interest. We continue in the Gospel of Matthew with another story of Jesus messing with the Pharisees' expectation of proper Sabbath behavior, but this time instead of it being about eating and harvesting, it's about whether or not it's okay to do "good" on the Sabbath.

This is wild; Neil is in the passenger seat as Chris takes the wheel and teaches us about his own research into Demons in the Tanakh, or what many Christians call "the Old Testament." it's a wild ride that gets pretty crazy, but we hope you enjoy. If you were looking for a stronger more Jewish based, scholarly understanding, you've come to the WRONG place. If you want a start down that path and our commentary, you've come to the RIGHT place.

Oh man, this is going to sound like a repeat of Episode 2, but it is in a different universe/timeline or whatever (think Sony vs. Disney Spiderman movies . . . Or Michael Keaton vs. Christian Bale Batman movies). this time we focus more on the Rabbinic discussions and exemptions on the Sabbath and some interpretations you could use to look at this.

Ep. 55 - Woes and Fitting Yokes - Matthew 11.20-30 by Beer and Bible

Here we go; after a long break waiting for my computer to get fixed, we have the latest (maybe not greatest) episode of Beer and Bible. This picks up from last episode and we highly recommend listening to that before getting into this episode. Originally this was supposed to be a fairly short podcast on 9 verses but we were sufficiently distracted. We talk about a couple different interpretations of a kingdom that Jesus refers to as coming "violently" as well as getting into what Chris refers to as "Yoda Speak" where Jesus talks about children singing songs and dirges and how his listeners have been responding.

It's been a hot minute since we last saw John the Baptizer. . .We've just sent the disciples out to the people, so Jesus stays up North and gets word from John's crew asking him if he (Jesus) is the real deal, or if they are looking for another revolutionary. And Jesus, (as is his way), gives a really weird non-answer . . that still answers the question.

Here we get Jesus describing the persecution ,and we talk a little bit about the crucifixion practices and Nero's musical career.

What happens when the Bible isn't exactly accurate? We continue talking about the "Apostles" and how this section isn't 100% in order/correct in how Western people of the 21st century expect.

This has the most click-bait opening of our podcasts so far. Enjopy.

If there was ever an episode where we lose a few listeners, this is it. It's wild, and it covers the immaculate conception.

We wrap up the story of the disciples and talk a bit abut what they've been commissioned to do. Some of this is based in strong evidence and tradition, while the rest is adventurous speculation steeped in an IPA.

We continue talking about the apostles some more. We really try and give a sense of what these guys are like, which isn't quite what Sunday school or Youth group gives. Just guys in their 20's following a charismatic leader. No matter how I say this, it always seems like a cult. Which, I guess it kinda is?

Ever wondered what the word "Apostle" means? Is that some weird church word? We look into Jesus sending out HIS "apostles" where the word came from, and the first two apostles. We bring in some pop culture, getting music suggestions from Chris, talking about Ghostbusters, and Robert Duvall's 1997 Performance.

Here we go - this time we are closing out this section of Matthew (chapters 8-9) and rounding everything out, and more of Chris's drunken commentary.

Here we go - you'll get a little bit of Chris's great parenting. Enjoy the weirdness as we talk about Jesus healing some blind people.

Another episode, but this time with a new guest, helping us break down more of Jesus's words. We're looking at Matthew 6.19-24 with Allen, who helps walk us through the possible meanings and confusion of this section. Please note the sound quality will be off as Chris and Neil share a mic, but hope fully you can still hear all of Drunk Chris's commentary and get a few of Neil's Musings.

This is an extra long podcast; hopefully this is a bonus to all of you with more edutainment! This time we dig into "The Lord's Prayer" - a famous passage featured mostly on TV and Movies at funerals. This is the passage that starts with "Our Father who art in Heaven" now you'll get some commentary on the prayer so next time you hear it/see it you'll have a little more or less of a clue on what's going on. Also: Around 37 minutes in, we do have a guest appear in the background; that would be Chris's feral daughter just outside the door where we are recording. She likes hanging out with us.

Taking a break from Matthew, we wanted to delve into a night of random conversation, where Chris and I just talk about what comes to mind. In a way, this is how Beer and bible started, just conversations over many beers (consumed by one party) and a lot of back and forth, all shooting from the hip. Another delve into Jesus's teachings on the sermon on the mount, mostly talking about donating to the poor and how people shouldn't pray. This is a section where Jesus talks a lot about how your personal spiritual practices should not be put on display. Chris drinks and reads, we talk a bit about Jonah, and make reference to Nick Jr. at least once.

We have a sober Chris and sober news. Please enjoy a podcast on the final section of Matthew 5, with 2 hosts, one fertile, and one not so much.

Another night where we talk about a section of Matthew (chapter 5), a Ghandi quote, and a little Castlevania. This section in particular is about making oaths, as well as the infamous “eye for an eye” passage.

Alright, here we go again, More drinking, more discussion! this passage is where Jesus discusses Adultery and Divorce, and really easy subjects like that.

Chris and Neil hit the part where the Bible says don't get angry at people, which is a little hypocritical considering Jesus gets mad one time and throws tables and chases people with whips. . .

Neil goes without notes throwing down some info on the an another part of the introduction to the sermon on the mount, covering Jesus's statement that he has "not come to abolish the Law", and Chris discusses a work-form-home-plan that is almost legitimate.

We continue in the introduction of the Sermon of the mount, where we discuss salted babes, seas, and morons. We cover a section where Jesus tells his disciples to be salt and light to the world, which is kind of weird to tell some one to be salty or to be light, but its not like Jesus has a reputation for being straight forward.

Back into more Jesus talk as we work our way through the book of Matthew. We wrap up the "beatitudes" before moving forward but not with out talking about purity rings, cults, and a few Hebrew words.

Get ready for some free-form discussions of ridiculous proportions with some Bible in there for good measure.

Alright, we need to meet two more of Jesus's disciples and start getting into Jesus doing his magic healing tricks, and start getting ready for our first big section of teachings. So why not skip to the teachings? Because we're not here for the highlight reel of Jesus, we're here to find out what the author is trying to say, and it's hard to figure out what they meant in their whole book by skipping what they thought was important enough to spend ink and paper writing - generally, if you know people are going to be writing this by hand over and over again, you don't waste words. So, if they're important to Mat, they're important to us. Plus, with us, we'll pull some weird information and drunk commentary out of any verse.
